  • Creating quick GUI front ends

    Hi, I wanted to have a GUI front-end for a script that accepts numerous command-line options, most of them are UNIX paths. So I thought rather than typing them in (even with auto-completion) every time, I'd create a GUI front end which contains text boxes with buttons beside them, which when clicked will invoke the file browser dialogue. Later, I thought I'd extend this to other scripts which would sure require a different set of GUI elements. This made me think if there's any existing app that would let me create a GUI dialog, after parsing some kind of description of the items that I want that window should contain. I know of programs like Zenity, but I think it's doesn't give me what I want. For example, if I were to use it for the first script, it'll end up flashing sequence of windows in succession rather than getting everything done from a single window. So, basically I'm looking at some program that lets me create a window from a text description, probably XML or the like. Please suggest. Thanks Jeenu

  • Does Monitor.Wait ensure that fields are re-read?

    It is generally accepted (I believe!) that a lock will force any values from fields to be reloaded (essentially acting as a memory-barrier or fence - my terminology in this area gets a bit loose, I'm afraid), with the consequence that fields that are only ever accessed inside a lock do not themselves need to be volatile. (If I'm wrong already, just say!) A good comment was raised here, questioning whether the same is true if code does a Wait() - i.e. once it has been Pulse()d, will it reload fields from memory, or could they be in a register (etc). Or more simply: does the field need to be volatile to ensure that the current value is obtained when resuming after a Wait()? Looking at reflector, Wait calls down into ObjWait, which is managed internalcall (the same as Enter). The scenario in question was: bool closing; public bool TryDequeue(out T value) { lock (queue) { // arbitrary lock-object (a private readonly ref-type) while (queue.Count == 0) { if (closing) { // <==== (2) access field here value = default(T); return false; } Monitor.Wait(queue); // <==== (1) waits here } ...blah do something with the head of the queue } } Obviously I could just make it volatile, or I could move this out so that I exit and re-enter the Monitor every time it gets pulsed, but I'm intrigued to know if either is necessary.

    Hello! I'm starting to learn MVC 2.0 and I'm trying to create a site with a quiz: user is asked a question and given several options of answer. If he chooses the right answer he gets some points, if he doesn't, he looses them. So what is the best place to store correct answer? Should I create a static class for this purpose? Thanks for your help!

    Hi, I'm developing an application that requires a textarea to be used in which no. of characters are restricted to 165. I made an object of JTextArea with row & column no. 3,3 respectively but it didn't work as when I went on typing, the size of 'Textarea' went on increasing.How to restrict that? As I've used 'DocumentListener' for noting no. of characters typed,deleted,cut and pasted, I'm getting problem when suddenly the size of textarea is increased. Thank you!

    Is it possible to set a password textbox text to text that the user could not reproduce on their end? Like are there special characters that can only be set from the server? For instance, one way to do this would be to use javascript to prevent typing of *'s, and to set the textbox text to be all *'s. But that's hacky. The motivation is to be able to tell on the server if the user changed the password at all, but not to restrict them from having a password of all *'s, for instance.

  • Why would you precede the main() function in C with a data type?

    Many are familiar with the hello world program in C #include <stdio.h> main () { printf ("hello world"); return 0; } Why do some precede the main () function with int as in: int main() Also, I've seen the word 'void' entered inside the () as in: int main(void) It seems like extra typing for nothing, but maybe it's a best practice that pays dividends in other situations? Also, why precede main() with an int if you're returning a character string? If anything, one would expect: char main(void) I'm also foggy about why we return 0 at the end of the function.

  • Aptana function definition popups

    I've noticed that in Aptana 2.0 over 1.5.1 that when typing a php function, you no longer get the popup window showing the function description and it's parameters. Does anyone know how to get this working again? As I relied on it quite heavily to remember which parameters went where. Open in PHP Manual shortcut Shift+F2 also doesn't work either, so all I can do is open my browser and keep php.net open all the time. Are either of these features functional? I know that Open delcaration has never worked annoyingly, but I had the function popup in 1.5.1 perfectly.

    Can someone explain to me why these comparisons work they way the do. I had a bug in one of my scripts that took me a little bit to work through. I was using read-host and typing a number. It was storing it as a string. Write-Host "(`'2`' -gt 9 ) = " ('2' -gt 9 ) Write-Host "(2 -gt 9 ) = " (2 -gt 9 ) Write-Host "(`'2`' -gt 10 ) = " ('2' -gt 10 ) If you are comparing a string to an Int does it use the Ascii value? If so why does the first one show $false, it should be $true. Then how is it when you chage it to an int of 10 it because $true.

  • Weird behaviour with optparse and bash tab completion

    Hi I am building a script for users new to Linux, so please understand why I am asking this :) My script runs like this: python script.py -f filename.txt I am using the optparse module for this. However, I noticed the following when doing tab completion. The tab completion works when I do: python script.py <tab completion> # Tab completion works normally as expected But it does not work when I do it like this: python script.py -f <tab completion> # No type of tab completion works here. I really don't want my users typing the name of the input file. Tab completion is a must. How can I get it working or what am I doing wrong here?

  • Eclipse + CVS use custom commit

    Hi All, My admin has set up the "cvs commit" in a very non traditional way, instead of typing "cvs commit" I use the admin provided "scriptname modified file" to checkin the file to CVS. I am using Eclipse to my day to day work and till now I am using the Eclipse CVS Plugin to checkout the repo,update,compare,etc and use the command line to checkin. I am getting annoyed by having to go to command line to do the commit, is there any way I can make Eclipse accept when I say commit it invokes the admin script instead of "cvs commit" ? I spoke to Admin and moving the under the cvs pre-commit hooks is not an option. What can I do ? I know fair amount of "Java" I am willing to do some changes to CVS plugin if I know how and where.   • Are there really safe and legal resources for sound effects to use in applications?

    For those who want to opt for "close" immediately: Great user interfaces need great sound effects, right? User interfaces are programmed by programmers, right? So this is a programming question, ok? I had a very hard time to find good and legal sound resources. I am not looking for free sounds. Proper licensing is absolutely crucial, and I don't want to get sued by multibilliondollar music companies, hollywood sound studios and their highly overpaid lawyers. They cry about people downloading their stuff in file sharing sites but when someone comes and wants to really license stuff, the market is so empty like an open and unwatched gold mine. Trust me, whatever I type into google, I always end up getting sort of opaque and strange music libraries that do charge money, but refuse to provide proper licensing evidence to the licensee. When you pay money and they only count how many files you downloaded, that can never be a valid license, nor any evidence for you that you did license the sounds. Imagine that contributor suing you and you say: "I licensed it at xy", and his lawyer just smiles: "Show me proof, mofo!". So you loose a million dollars, or 1 for every downloaded app. Congrats. But that's the way all those "hey we're the worlds largest sound effect library" libraries are doing it. It's really annoying. And I hope someone here is able to point out a sound effects ressource which is A) big B) used by professinals C) has a reasonable pricing and licensing model D) provides the licensee with proper legal evidence about licensed sounds You know, I'm not from the US and typically you US folks are the ones who invent the cool stuff on the net, and maybe I just missed a new great start up. If you have a plain html input type=text with a small width eg 20 and then type more characters than can be displayed, it shows the last characters you type. And the first ones are scrolled out of view: This is my long text // this is the whole string my long string // this is what is actually visible in the input box How do I make it so that when you hit tab, the view area resets so that the start of the string is visible and the end is hidden? my long string // this is what is visible in the input box when typing This is my // this is what is I want to be visible in the input box after you hit tab What do you call this, and how do you do it?

    Hi Folks, I have tried all the way but could not succeed to set backgroundColor of TableView. setting tableView.backgroundColor and/or cell.backgroundColor to clearColor didn't work when the parent view controller was UIViewContoller. My nib file structure is FileOwner View UITableView (Note: i set the TableView to groupedTable section) First attempt, I created the UIView in the code viewDidLoad UIView *view = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 160, 300)] autorelease; [view setBackgroundColor:UIColor blueColor]; // color it just to see if it is created at the right place [self.tableView sendSubViewToBack:view]; It works but it hides the content of cell. I am able to see the content of header but not cell content. (But when i change the co-ordinate of view(0,150,160,300) then i am able to see the cell's content but then it loose the backgroundColor of tableview. Second attempt, I created the imageView View ImageView UITableView and set the self.tableView.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; but did not work. I googled but did not the peaceful answer.

  • How do you increase Internet Explorer 7's "Select as you type" timeout for comboboxes?

    In Internet Explorer 7, you can select options from comboboxes by typing the first few letters of the value you're looking for. However, some people in our organisation are a bit slow and can't type their selection quick enough, with the result that the timeout is triggered and the "select as you type" process starts all over again. Example: If I type A-R-M-A (looking for Armadale) then wait half a second and type D, I'll get selections beginning with the letter D. What I want to do is increase this timeout to allow for slow typers. (We're in a corporate environment so rolling out these changes to all machines won't be a problem).

    Stackoverflow users: A lot of things can be represented in programs by using the basic types, or we can create a new class for it. Example: A social security number can be a number, string or its own object. (Other common examples: Phone numbers, names, zip codes, user id, order id and other id's.) My question is: When should the basic types be used, and when should we write ourselves a new class? I see that when you need to add behavior, you'll want to create a class (example, social security number parsing, validation, formatting, etc). But is this the only criteria? I have come across cases where many of these things are represented as java Integers and/or Strings. We loose the benefit of type-checking, and I have often seen bugs caused by parameters being mixed in calls to function(Intever, Integer, Integer, Integer). On the other hand, some programmers are opposed to over-designing by creating classes for "eveything". Obviously, the answer is "it depends". But, what do you think, and what do you normally do?

    Hello, I am trying to implement some functionality in a blackberry app, that I saw in other application. Basically it's a window that has a message, and a Facebook icon. When you click on the icon it launches a new window, this window asks the user for permissions(user and password), and then the message is posted in the user's wall. So my question is how can I replicate that?. I have been looking at the graph api, but I just can't figure out how to do all of this in one step.   • Need some ideas on how to acomplish this in Java (parsing strings)

    Sorry I couldn't think of a better title, but thanks for reading! My ultimate goal is to read a .java file, parse it, and pull out every identifier. Then store them all in a list. Two preconditions are there are no comments in the file, and all identifiers are composed of letters only. Right now I can read the file, parse it by spaces, and store everything in a list. If anything in the list is a java reserved word, it is removed. Also, I remove any loose symbols that are not attached to anything (brackets and arithmetic symbols). Now I am left with a bunch of weird strings, but at least they have no spaces in them. I know I am going to have to re-parse everything with a . delimiter in order to pull out identifiers like System.out.print, but what about strings like this example: Logger.getLogger(MyHash.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, After re-parsing by . I will be left with more crazy strings like: getLogger(MyHash getName()) log(Level SEVERE, How am I going to be able to pull out all the identifiers while leaving out all the trash? Just keep re-parsing by every symbol that could exist in java code? That seems rather lame and time consuming. I am not even sure if it would work completely. So, can you suggest a better way of doing this?

  • How do I create an empty file in emacs?

    How can I create an empty file from emacs, ideally from within a dired buffer? For example, I've just opened a Python module in dired mode, created a new directory, opened that in dired, and now need to add an empty __init__.py file in the directory. If I use C-x C-f __init__.py RET C-x C-s then emacs doesn't create the file because no changes have been made to it. I would have to type in the file, save it, delete my typing and then save it again for that to work. Thanks

  • Can .NET AppDomains do this?

    I've spent hours reading up about AppDomains, but I'm not sure they work quite like I'm hoping. If I have two classes, Foo in AppDomain #1, Bar in AppDomain #2: App Domain #1 is the application. App Domain #2 is something like a plugin, and can be loaded and unloaded dynamically. AppDomain #2 wants to create Foo and use it. Foo uses lots of classes in AppDomain #1 internally. I don't want AppDomain #2 using object foo with reflection, I want it to use Foo foo, with all the static typing and compiled speed that goes with it. Can this be done considering that AppDomain #1, containing Foo, is never unloaded? If so, does any remoting take place here when using Foo? When I unload AppDomain #2, the type Foo is destroyed?
