• Serial connection over a single USB cable (Windows to linux, or linux to linux)

  I'm helping out with a project for an embedded device that only has USB and no serial. This device is running Linux. These days, when we need to connect to a serial port on a device we typically use a USB to serial adapter (on something like a phone system or a load balancing device, etc). I would like to know if it is possible to have the host device behave as though it were a serial adapter, thus removing the need for one. Given the nature of USB, is this approach even necessary? To recap, I would like to be able to connect a single A-to-A USB cable from my workstation (be it windows or linux) to this device, for the purpose of administration (especially initial setup), using minicom, putty or hyperterminal. • Can a usb cable carry 12v?

  Here's what i'm wanting to do. I have a Acer Iconia A500 tablet. I want to plug it in, in the car, but it has a barrel plug and I don't want to buy an inverter. The car adapters are expensive for what they do. But since it's just a cable... wasn't sure if that really made a whole lot of difference since it's only 1.5 amps from the wall charger. Is it possible to use that usb cable through the powerbolt car charger, to charge the A500?

• Unable to boot with Windows 2008 DVD / USB Key

  Hi everyone, I am trying to install Windows 2008 server on a HP Proliant DL180 G5. There is no built-in DVD reader so I need to use my LaCie USB one. When I put the CD in and boot from the USB DVD on the server, I get the error message: Boot Failed! Please insert boot media in selected boot device. So I tried with another Windows bootable CD and still no luck. What I've done then, I copied the installation DVD on my 16go USB key. Again, impossible to boot from the USB Key. I have 2 147go SAS 15k HDD on my server. They are not showing in the Bios. I was wondering if this is a reason why nothing will boot on it. I am trying to find a way to deploy Windows 2008 server on my HP server as soon as possible. If you guys have ideas, feel free to let me know :) Best regards, David. • Recommendations for distributed processing/distributed storage systems

  At my organization we have a processing and storage system spread across two dozen linux machines that handles over a petabyte of data. The system right now is very ad-hoc; processing automation and data management is handled by a collection of large perl programs on independent machines. I am looking at distributed processing and storage systems to make it easier to maintain, evenly distribute load and data with replication, and grow in disk space and compute power. The system needs to be able to handle millions of files, varying in size between 50 megabytes to 50 gigabytes. Once created, the files will not be appended to, only replaced completely if need be. The files need to be accessible via HTTP for customer download. Right now, processing is automated by perl scripts (that I have complete control over) which call a series of other programs (that I don't have control over because they are closed source) that essentially transforms one data set into another. No data mining happening here. Here is a quick list of things I am looking for: Reliability: These data must be accessible over HTTP about 99% of the time so I need something that does data replication across the cluster. Scalability: I want to be able to add more processing power and storage easily and rebalance the data on across the cluster. Distributed processing: Easy and automatic job scheduling and load balancing that fits with processing workflow I briefly described above. Data location awareness: Not strictly required but desirable. Since data and processing will be on the same set of nodes I would like the job scheduler to schedule jobs on or close to the node that the data is actually on to cut down on network traffic. Here is what I've looked at so far: Storage Management: GlusterFS: Looks really nice and easy to use but doesn't seem to have a way to figure out what node(s) a file actually resides on to supply as a hint to the job scheduler. GPFS: Seems like the gold standard of clustered filesystems. Meets most of my requirements except, like glusterfs, data location awareness. Ceph: Seems way to immature right now. Distributed processing: Sun Grid Engine: I have a lot of experience with this and it's relatively easy to use (once it is configured properly that is). But Oracle got its icy grip around it and it no longer seems very desirable. Both: Hadoop/HDFS: At first glance it looked like hadoop was perfect for my situation. Distributed storage and job scheduling and it was the only thing I found that would give me the data location awareness that I wanted. But I don't like the namename being a single point of failure. Also, I'm not really sure if the MapReduce paradigm fits the type of processing workflow that I have. It seems like you need to write all your software specifically for MapReduce instead of just using Hadoop as a generic job scheduler. OpenStack: I've done some reading on this but I'm having trouble deciding if it fits well with my problem or not. Does anyone have opinions or recommendations for technologies that would fit my problem well? Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• USB Keyboard not working under windows 7 x64?

  I have two usb keyboards, one no-name cheapo thing and an old logitech. When i plug them in to my computer they pop up in device manager as "Unknown device" respective "USB-receiver". Both of them fail to install any drivers, neighter automatically or through windows update. Both keyboards work perfectly on another computer i have with vista 32bit. Can this be one of those cases where a device does not work in 64bit version of windows? I doubt it though since I've never had that problem before with any device and i thought that basic things like keyboards would be kind of failsafe. I don't really know how to start debugging this issue. I've tried all the obvious, rebooting, changing usb-port etc. Are there any generic x64 keyboard drivers you can use? Is there any way to find the manufacturer of the keyboard over usb? There is nothing written on it.

  I've been wondering how I can stream audio to an external Edirol USB sound card, wirelessly, on both Mac and PC. I'm not looking for high quality transmission, just to play mp3s from my Mac laptop to a USB sound card that is attached to two very nice balanced studio reference monitors. Is there any way I can firstly power the sound card box, and secondly, provide with an audio stream along it's USB input. I've looked at the Belkin USB hub, and I have a Time Capsule with the AirPort interface inside. These things seem to do vaguely what I want but when it comes to audio, the specifications are less clear. Any suggestions very welcome.

• Installing Windows 7 from USB on a Thinkpad T61

  I am trying to install Windows 7 Professional from USB 3.0 flashdrive, on a Thinkpad T61. The problem is, Thinkpads BIOS will not detect the flash drive as bootable medium, and won't allow to boot from it. What I did: Enabled USB BIOS Support in BIOS (it was on by default) In startup menu, added USB HDD to boot order (it has '-' sign in front of it) Created Windows 7 install media with UNetbootin, WinUSB (linux tool) dd and Grub4DOS. As you can tell, currently, I only have access to Linux machine to make the flashdrive. What happens: The T61 BIOS shows '-USB HDD' in boot order menu. The '-' sign suggests that the plugged flash drive is currently not bootable. The same flashdrive (with the same Windows image on it) is booting without any problems on a Dell D430 and Lenovo Y550. Also, Ubuntu 12.04 install USB created with Unetbootin shows as bootable ('+' sign in BIOS boot order menu) and boots from the F12 boot menu. Additional info thinkwiki.org says that some Thinkpad BIOSes do not use MBR on flashdrives. It suggests using Extended-IPL boot loader, but the provided links are broken and there seems to be no mirrors. Solution: http://superuser.com/a/430186/54970

• Make a file non-deletable in USB

  Somebody used my USB drive and upon returning it to me, I found a autorun.inf that is undeletable. I tried changing it's file attribute which is only H (not even set as a system file) but it keeps on saying Access Denied. The USB is set on FAT32, upon asking my friend, he told me that he uses Panda USB Vaccine http://research.pandasecurity.com/Panda-USB-and-AutoRun-Vaccine/ How do they do this? Im trying to use some Disk Sector editor but have no idea which hex file they change to make this kind of file and make it deletable again. Formatting the drive removes it, but I'm curious as to how to be able to set those kind of file attribute.

I've created a Live USB of Windows 8 using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool - Yes, I know it says Windows 7 but I've been doing research and I am hearing from everywhere that it also works for Windows 8. The ISO was loaded on just fine (AFAIK) Computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed I have Safe boot and Fast boot disabled in the BIOS Settings I have USB as my first boot option I have tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports Yet, Mint is all that will boot up. Anybody have a similar issue? If it helps, the computer is a Toshiba Satellite S855D Laptop with an AMD APU quad-core processor (3 CPU, 1 GPU)

  We are about to get our first managed switch at work (Procurve 2520G-24-PoE), and this lowly programmer gets to put on his admin hat and try to configure it. The switch has an RJ45 serial port for console access. My laptop has USB ports but no serial port. In fact, there isn't a single computer in the office with a serial port. I've seen USB-to-DB9 adapters, but I need to go from USB to RJ45 (serial). How would I go about accomplishing this? Do I need two adapters? Will USB-to-DB9 and then DB9-to-RJ45 work? • XP VM not detecting USB keyboard or mouse from Windows 7 host

  I've been using a Windows XP Pro VM (32-bit, SP3) for months on my work PC (Windows 7 64-bit) with no problems, with a PS/2 keyboard and a standard optical USB mouse. Today I copied this VM onto my home PC, which is also Windows 7 64-bit but with a G15 USB keyboard and MX518 USB mouse. For some reason the VM does not accept input from the keyboard or mouse, which makes it almost impossible to use. (Unity works but is not an option). Both my home and work PC are running VMware player 3.1.0. My keyboard and mouse show up as USB devices in the bottom-right of the VMware Player window, and if I click them I have the standard option to "Connect (Disconnect from host)". I have selected this option for the keyboard, and then the VM happily accepts keyboard input, but of course my host PC no longer does. It seems like VMware is seeing my keyboard and mouse as USB devices and not input devices. I've tried sending the keyboard input to the guest and reinstalling VMware Tools, but that achieved nothing. I'm certain it's a problem with the VM, and not the XP install, as I also can't use F12 to enter the VMware BIOS when the VM is powering up.

  I have a PCMCIA (Cardbus) 32bit USB 2.0 2-port card. If I plug my MP3 player in it works fine. I have a USB adapter for a hard disk drive. When I plug that into the PCMCIA USB slot the light on that hard disk flashed between red and green - it should stay green. "USB Mass Storage device" is added in the Device Manager, but no drive letter appears in My Computer. The installing device icon down by the clock never goes away. (Windows XP SP3.)

  For CentOS installation CDs, you can install OS, as well as booting into "rescue" mode so that you can do a chroot mount on the system partition for problem solving, even the system is installed in hardware RAID drives. How can we create a similar thing but on usb flash drive? I tried to do it with unetbootin, but when booting into the USB, eventually the CentOS setup still requires presence of CDs.   One is USB modem which is connected and working and problematic one is a plain vfat USB stick which contain data ....that is the fellow not mounting :( I have tried to see it by fdisk ....it doesn't mount autometically... Is there any UDEV rule for that?? Because I have put a udev rule to remove the usb-storage thing( I had to.. otherwise the usb modem wont get connected... it waits for storage to relase the port) Any idea and solution would be greatly appreciated PS: I am running Arch distribution.   Can I get my Nexus One/Android on my local network over USB instead of WiFi and browse to my computer's IP address, the one to which the phone would be connected to, via USB? For instance, let's say my computer has an IP address 100.1.1.1 and when I go to it from the computer I would go to my localhost and see a website I've set up locally in the computer.   I'am a bit confusing about the use of Isolated Storage on an IIS server. I understand the goal of Isolated Storage : provides a safe place to store data with no worry about how and where is this place. Since Isolated Storage has a by-user and by-assembly approach, I'am not to wild about using it on a IIS server where applications have almost their own identity. I haven't really seen the interest of impersonating a web application and almost never seen impersonated web applications myself but this is my point of view. Using Isolated Storage on a server mean : Using Isolated stores in \Documents and Settings\<user>\ Which mean \Documents and Settings\Default User\ when the application pool is owned by Local System or Network Services I guess Which also mean Write rights on this folder for Local System or Network Services Using of impersonation Regarding a web application (logic), these ideas are confusing me... Document and Settings ? Default User ? Enable impersonation just for storage ? No control about storage on server ? Uh ? And then I'am a front of a dilema : use System.IO.Packaging (with Isolated Storage inside) on web applications or find an alternative ? Am I wrong in my approach ? Did I miss something ? Any point of view is appreciated and an explanation about the Isolated Storage with IIS philosophy could be an anwser. Thanks !

  I downloaded the Ubuntu Software to create a USB to install Ubuntu. I rebooted my PC (Windows 7), in wich i did a partition (:E) just for Ubuntu. But when i start the installer, it says there's no other OS in my computer, and doesn't give me the option to install it in :E, just the option to format the WHOLE hard drive and install it there. What can i do? Also, i tried Wubi before, but it had an error with "wubildr.mbr"
