• Software that will burn DVDs with a SFV or Pararchive file for each disc?

  I'd like to burn several thousand RAW files (.DNG) of around 10-30 MB each to DVD to backup my photo archive. I'm looking for software that can do this and include an SFV-type file on each disc burnt. These are my requirements: compression is optional, and probably not desirable due to the extra time involved files should be spread amongst the discs as self-contained units, i.e. I don't want to have to load files from more than one disc to be able to read the files on that disc, so that excludes WinRAR's spanning options I don't want to spend time writing ISO images first as this will be a task I'll need to repeat often as I add new images to my archive - the software should write to the DVDs for me as simply as possible I'd like the SFV/Pararchive/recovery record to be stored with the files on each disc, so it only references the files on that particular disk Thanks in advance!

I do get errors when I feed it bad XML. But i want to implement it in a more elegant way. This looks like it would break for large XML etc. Is there some way to validate without the handler so that I get the document validated in one go and then deal with errors? To me it looks Async such that the call to Validate() would pass and some non deterministic time later the handler would get called with the result/errors. Is that right? • Use Excel Table Column in ComboBox Input Range property

I have an Excel worksheet with a combo box on Sheet1 that is populated via its Input Range property from a Dynamic Named Range on Sheet2. It works fine and no VBA is required. My data on Sheet2 is actually in an Excel Table (all data is in the XLS file, no external data sources). For clarity, I wanted to use a structured table reference for the combo box's Input Range, but cannot seem to find a syntax that works, e.g. myTable[[#Data],[myColumn3]] I cannot find any indications that the combo box WILL accept structured table references, though I cannot see why it wouldn't. So, two part question: 1. Is is possible to use a table column reference in the combo box input range property (not using VBA) and 2. HOW?

• PHP Preg_replace after a specific amount of characters with a conditional

  I've been working on this for a bit, but my regex is weak. I need to check to see if a number is a whole number (single digit) and append a ".001" to it if so. The problem is, it's in the middle of a line with values separated by commas. MATERIALS,1,1,9999;1 4PL1 PB_Mel,,1,6,0.173,0.173,0.375,0,0.375,0,0,0,0,2,0,1,1 Needs to be MATERIALS,1,1,9999;1 4PL1 PB_Mel,,1.001,6,0.173,0.173,0.375,0,0.375,0,0,0,0,2,0,1,1 The line must start with "MATERIALS". There are more than one MATERIALS lines. The value will always be after 5 commas. • Applying Unity in dynamic menu

  I was going through Unity 2.0 to check if it has an effective use in our new application. My application is a Windows Forms application and uses a traditional bar menu (at the top), currently. My UIs (Windows Forms) more or less support Dependency Injection pattern since they all work with a class (Presentation Model Class) supplied to them via the constructor. The form then binds to the properties of the supplied P Model class and calls methods on the P Model class to perform its duties. Pretty simple and straightforward. How P Model reacts to the UI actions and responds to them by co-ordinating with the Domain Class (Business Logic/Model) is irrelevant here and thus not mentioned. The object creation sequence to show up one UI from menu then goes like this - Create Business Model instance Create Presentation Model instance with Business Model instance passed to P Model constructor. Create UI instance with Presentation Model instance passed to UI constructor. My present solution: To show an UI in the method above from my menu I would have to refer all assemblies (Business, PModel, UI) from my Menu class. Considering I have split the modules into a number of physical assemblies, that would be a dificult task to add references to about 60 different assemblies. Also the approach is not very scalable since I would certainly need to release more modules and with this approach I would have to change the source code every time I release a new module. So primarily to avoid the reference of so many assemblies from my Menu class (assembly) I did as below - Stored all the dependency described above in a database table (SQL Server), e.g. ModuleShortCode | BModelAssembly | BModelFullTypeName | PModelAssembly | PModelFullTypeName | UIAssembly | UIFullTypeName Now used a static class named "Launcher" with a method "Launch" as below - Launcher.Launch("Discount") Launcher.Launch("Customers") The Launcher internally uses data from the dependency table and uses Activator.CreateInstance() to create each of the objects and uses the instance as constructor parameter to the next object being created, till the UI is built. The UI is then shown as a modal dialog. The code inside Launcher is somewhat like - Form frm = ResolveForm("Discount"); frm.ShowDialog(); The ResolveForm does the trick of building the chain of objects. Can Unity help me here? Now when I did that I did not have enough information on Unity and now that I have studied Unity I think I have been doing more or less the same thing. So I tried to replace my code with Unity. However, as soon as I started I hit a block. If I try to resolve UI forms in my Menu as Form customers = myUnityContainer.Resolve(); or Form customers = myUnityContainer.Resolve(typeof(Customers)); Then either way, I need to refer to my UI assembly from my Menu assembly since the target Type "Customers" need to be known for Unity to resolve it. So I am back to same place since I would have to refer all UI assemblies from the Menu assembly. I understand that with Unity I would have to refer fewer assemblies (only UI assemblies) but those references are needed which defeats my objectives below - Create the chain of objects dynamically without any assembly reference from Menu assembly. This is to avoid Menu source code changing every time I release a new module. My Menu also is built dynamically from a table. Be able to supply new modules just by supplying the new assemblies and inserting the new Dependency row in the table by a database patch. At this stage, I have a feeling that I have to do it the way I was doing, i.e. Activator.CreateInstance() to fulfil all my objectives. I need to verify whether the community thinks the same way as me or have a better suggestion to solve the problem. The post is really long and I sincerely thank you if you come til this point. • Can I ping via an arbitrary interface of a DD-WRT system? [migrated]

  There's a Linksys WRT54GL router with DD-WRT firmware (v23SP2). What I tried, as suggested here: ping -I vlan2 <address> ping 192.168.2.1 <address> In both cases ping simply exits with no error messages. Also, ping ignores many other parameters, again, by exiting silently. I failed to find any references that DD-WRT has a limited version of ping whatsoever. I also don't think it can be a permissions issue as mentioned here since the only user with DD-WRT is root. What's wrong?

  Using visual studio, in the editor window, I am able to navigate from the usage of a member to the line and file where it is declared by pressing F12 while the cursor is over that member by or right clicking on the member and selecting "Go To Definition". I would like to find a way to navigate from an override member to the base class member that it overrides. For example, if I have the following class with one method public class SomeClass { public virtual void TheMethod() { // do something } } An I override that method somewhere else in the project or solution similar to the following public OtherClass : SomeClass { public override void TheMethod() { // do something else } } I want to navigate from the declaration of TheMethod in OtherClass to the declaration of TheMethod in SomeClass Is there a way to do this? I've found that I can find the definition of the member in the base class by pressing Shift + F12 (Find all References) and then looking through the list occurances, this works fine most of the time, since the list isn't usually that long but it would be much better to have a way to go there directly.

• Persistent Spot Instance Request with CloudFormation

  Is it possible to create "Persistent Spot Instance" with AWS CloudFormation ? I'm going through the Autoscale and EC2 CloudFormation's template references but there is no mention how to set a property so the Spot requests stay persistent. When the price bid lower than the actual spot price AWS brings the instances down. I would like the instances to be started automatically when the instance price is cheaper again. This can be set manually when creating a new spot instance request by checking the option "Persistent Request" in the "Request Instances Wizard".

• Which linux x86 hardware keystore?

  I'm terminating SSL/TLS in my DMZ and I have to assume that machine will be hacked. At which point my certificates are compromised. Previously I've used nCipher hardware keystore/accelerator to solve this issue. These cards won't reveal the private key even to root. The card performs the encryption and decryption onboard and is hardened against physical attack. The only way to get at the keys is by attaching a smart card reader to the card itself. I'm having trouble finding information about something to recreate this approach. Is this the domain of specialist switches and firewalls these days? • Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

  I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

  I'm trying to construct a regex to screen valid part and/or serial numbers in combination, with ranges. A valid part number is a two alpha, three digit pattern or /[A-z]{2}\d{3}/ i.e. aa123 or ZZ443 etc... A valid serial number is a five digit pattern, or /\d{5}/ 13245 or 31234 and so on. That part isn't the problem. I want combinations and ranges to be valid as well: 12345, ab123,ab234-ab245, 12346 - 12349 - the ultimate goal. Ranges and/or series of part and/or serial numbers in any combination. Note that spaces are optional when specifying a range or after a comma in a series. Note that a range of part numbers has the same two letter combination on both sides of the range (i.e. ab123 - ab239) I have been wrestling with this expression for two days now, and haven't come up with anything better than this: /^(?:[A-z]{2}\d{3}[, ]*)|(?:\d{5}[, ]*)|(?:([A-z]{2})\d{3} ?- ?\4\d{3}[, ]*)|(?:\d{5} ?- ?\d{5}[, ]*)$/ ... My Regex-Fu is weak.

• How to change my commandline locale after CentOS decided to change it?

  So apparently, CentOS decided I was Dutch, and thus, should not have a English locale. Apart from the fact that this greatly bothers me, I am having a pretty hard time actually changing it back. There does not seem to be a setlocale function, and system-config-language tells me I am using an English locale, even though my environment says otherwise. Any help would be appreciated. • Why can't I defragment my SQL 2008 .mdf file?

  I am defragmenting a badly (95%) fragmented drive upon which large (35 gig) SQL Server 2008 .mdf files live. After defragmenting and viewing the exception report, I see that the production .mdf file that I'm most interested in could not be defragmented. I initially figured it was because MSSQL had an exclusive lock on the file, so I detached it and tried again. No luck - this particular .mdf file could not be defragmented. What am I missing? Most online references suggest that I should be able to file defrag an .mdf A note: yes, I'm talking about file defragmentation, not index defrag, which is already being done routinely, and which I'll re-run after this. Thanks! What am I missing?

• How do you place an Excel Sheet/Workbook onto a C# .NET Winform?

  I am trying to create a stand alone application in Visual Studio 2008 C# .Net that will house Excel Workbooks (2007). I am using Office.Interop in order to create the Excel application and I open the workbooks via Workbooks.Open(...). The Interop does not provide any functionality to "move" the workbooks onto a form so I turned to P/Invoke Win32 library. I am able to move the entire excel application onto a WinForm with great success: // pseudo code to give you the idea excel = new Excel.ApplicationClass(); SetParent(excel.Hwnd, form.handle); This allows me to customize the form and control user input. All right click commands and formula editing work properly. Now, the issue I run into is when I want to open two workbooks in two separate forms. I do this by creating two excel application classes and placing each of those in their own form. When I try to reference one workbook to another workbook via =[Book2]Sheet1!A1, for example, it does not update. This is expected as each application is running under its own thread/process. Here are the alternatives I have tried. If you have any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.(OLE is not an option. VSTO must be available) Create a single application class and move the workbook window into my form. Results: The window moves into my form and displays correctly, however, no right click or left click works on the form and it never gains focus. (I have tried to manually set focus and it does not work either). My guess is, by moving the window outside of the XLDESK application (viewable in Spy++ for Excel Application), the workbook application (EXCEL7) does not receive the correct window messages to gain focus and to behave properly. This leads me to: Move the XLDESK window handle into my form. Results: This allows the workbook to be click-able again but also has an undesired result of moving all child windows into the same form. Create a main excel application that creates workbooks. Create a new excel application for each new window. Move the workbook under the new excel application XLDESK window. Results: This also has the same effect of the 1st option. Unable to click in the workbook. This must mean that the thread that created the workbook is also responsible for the events. Create a windows hook that watches the WndProc procedure. Results: No events watched. The targeted thread must export the hook proc in a DLL export call. Excel does not do this and thus you cannot inject into it's DLL (unless someone can prove me wrong). I am able to watch all threads within my own process but not from an outside process. Excel is created as a separate process. Subclass NativeWindow. Results: Same as #4. After I move the window into my form, all events are captured up until the mouse is directly over the excel sheet making the sheet seem unclickable. One idea I haven't tried yet is just to continually save the excel sheet as the user edits it. This should update all references but I would feel this would cause poor system performance. There will be numerous chart references as well and I'm not sure if this solution would cause problems further down the road. I think in the end, all the workbooks need to be created by the same Excel Application and then moved to get the desired results but I can't seem to find the correct way to move the windows without disabling the user input in the process. Any suggestions?

There's also a mention of it on winsupersite that says The cheapest, called MSDN Operating Systems, costs $699 a year ($499 renewal), and of course includes Windows 8 (Core), Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise. You get five licenses each for Windows 8 Core and Pro, and one Multiple Activation Key (MAK) for Windows 8 Enterprise. What is windows 8 core? Is it the new 'home' edition or something else? What differentiates it from the pro and enterprise editions?

  I am looking for a similar solution to MaxiVista, but for Linux (Ubuntu). I have an Ubuntu machine with just one display attached, but I also have a Windows laptop running a virtual machine with Ubuntu installed. I figured there must be a way to trick the main Ubuntu machine remotely use the virtual machine's display capabilities. After all, X11 does support forwarding and things like that. Any ideas how to do it using VNC? I saw some references to xdmx, but instructions so far are vague and do not seem to work on my machine(s).

• Control cell reference increment when dragging a forumula in Libre Office Calc (3.5)

  Using Libre Office Calc (3.5) and have a question. When copying a formula that references cells into multiple empty cells the default is to increment each cell reference by one column or row, depending on the direction that the formula is being drug. A formula '= 1 + A1' drug horizontally changes to '= 1 + B1' when pulled one cell to right and '=1 + A2' when pulled one cell down. Is there a way to control increase the increment of the referenced cell? Is is possible to have a formula '= 1 + A1' that effectively changes to '= 1 + A3' when drug down one cell, '= 1 + A5' when drug down two cells, etc? If it matters, I am trying to take a constantly updating master list of data that is organized by dates (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and create separate spread sheets for each day of the week that can be updated by only pulling down the formula into the next cell. My attempts at using the 'lookup' function, 'offset' function, and creating a sort column in Libre Office Calc are thwarted by my inability to figure out how to get around the single step increment when pulling a formula down into the next cell.   Is it possible to pass command-line arguments to a program that is invoked via a file:// url? I'm trying to include Remote Desktop links in a wiki page that lists some servers: <a href="file:///c|/windows/system32/mstsc.exe /v:serverName">serverName</a> When I omit the argument the link works fine, but when I include it the link doesn't work. I Googled around a bit and couldn't find any references to this. I suspect that the answer is that file:// urls simple don't accept arguments (I can think of all kinds of ways to abuse them if they do), but I thought I'd throw it out there in case I've simply got the syntax wrong. • Why is "chmod -R 777 /" destructive?

  This is a Canonical Question about File Permission and Why 777 is "destructive". I'm not asking how to fix this problem, as there are a ton of references of that already on Server Fault (reinstall OS). Why does it do anything destructive at all? If you've ever ran this command you pretty much immediately destroy your operating system. I'm not clear why removing restrictions has any impact on existing processes. For example, if I don't have read access to something and after a quick mistype in the terminal suddenly I now have access well... why does that cause Linux to break?

• Can GNU sed (for Windows) handle Unicode? If so, is it a code-page/locale issue, or a switch?

  I've been using GNU SED on and off for a couple of years now. It spins me out a bit sometimes, but it does a good job... for single-byte char sets! I now and then notice references to GNU SED being Unicode-aware, but the closest I've seen of this is its "binary" mode.. and binary is not Unicode. Can GSED process a Unicode text file at CodePoint resolution, including and especially \r\n (Windows)... and if it can, does it expect UTF-8, UTF-16, or what? and how does SED detect the encoding?
