• Does my approach for building a real time monitoring system make sense? [closed]

  I am developing an application that will display a dashboard that will display data from different SQL databases. This needs to happen in almost real time, our refresh time is about 5 minutes. My approach so far is: Develop a Windows service to accumulate the data from various SQL Server instances. Persist those details into a SQL DB, from which the dashboard will display them on the web page. Trigger fetching of data from the Windows service will every x minutes. The details of the SQL Server instances will be stored in the SQL DB which the Windows service will be referring. Does my approach make sense?

• Auto backup mysql database to dropbox [closed]

  Is it possible to automatically backup my database to dropbox? If so how can I do it? The key criteria I need it to do is: Be automatic. Be Mac compliant. Be weekly. Sync with dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com) automatically. Be able to backup several databases from several websites. Be free... or relatively cheap! Have a guide on how to setup the solution. UPDATE: I've managed to setup an auto weekly backup using a cronjob: mysqldump -u username -pMyPassword Mydatabase > backup-file.sql That is saving the backup to my hosting space. It's a start but isn't ideal, how can I save that backup to a folder on my computer? Automatically of course.

  I am Running the new Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2, and am looking to install Adobe Acrobat Pro from My CS4 Web Premium CD. Whenever I try and install the setup.exe I get the following error: Internal Error - invalid parameters recieved. in a Wine Program Crash box. I am running wine 1.5 and have tried 1.4 also. I have used winetricks and PlayOnLinux, and cannot get it to install with either program. Any help would be appreciated,.... Also If I cant get it installed does anyone know any programs that can link .PDF files to MySql databases in Linux ,....? I really need this to be able to host some web forms for work. • Getting data from a webpage in a stable and efficient way

  Recently I've learned that using a regex to parse the HTML of a website to get the data you need isn't the best course of action. So my question is simple: What then, is the best / most efficient and a generally stable way to get this data? I should note that: There are no API's There is no other source where I can get the data from (no databases, feeds and such) There is no access to the source files. (Data from public websites) Let's say the data is normal text, displayed in a table in a html page I'm currently using python for my project but a language independent solution/tips would be nice. As a side question: How would you go about it when the webpage is constructed by Ajax calls?

• What is the traditional way to maintain extensibility in a database-driven application like this?

  I'm working on a simple application for a game in Java that allows a user to record whether they have collected a given item and how much experience it contains. This will work for multiple item types (weapons, armor) and each will have its own tab with a list of all items that qualify under it. Making changes as new types are added is not such a big deal (if a clothing slot is added, for instance), but new items are added to the game all the time in biweekly patches, and I'm not sure what the traditional/customary way to make sure the application is user-extensible without requiring me to would be. Whether that would be adding a configuration menu that allows users to add news items (new rows to the local SQLite database) or a text file with something similar, but I'm certain there's a well-accepted way to do this that I'm not aware of. I'm new to databases and ignorant of the solution, so what's the professional/futureproof way to do this?

• Another Linq to SQL product, Enzo Multitenant Framework

  An open source library and full product have been developed for transparently splitting large tables across several databases for performance, similar to database table partitioning.  It is all handled along with the Linq to SQL framework, and looks pretty slick, I will be reviewing the product shortly.  It looks mostly transparent to the developer!  There are other capabilites worth a look.  This looks like it works for azure as well. • bug fixing appproach

  I have been working on a project comprising of databases. I recently received a bug report for the remote execution of some queries. Usually you try to find out the actual cause for the bug to occur and then fix it. But sometimes what I do when I'm fed up of doing some research (and can't find suitable information on the internet) is just change the logic, which takes me much less time compared to the other option. Is this approach of mine correct or should I try to fix the original bug involving more R&D?

Automated Database provisioning - Being able to 'one button' provision databases and database objects. This includings creating the database instance, creating database objects, network configuration and security provisioning. It is estimated that just being able to provision a new DB table in automated fashion will reduce time required to create a new DB table from 60 hours down to 8 hours. 2. Virtualization and blades - DBaaS infrastructure is all based upon VMs and blades. 3. Consolidation of database vendors - Moving from over ten database vendors down to three.

• How to organize my site's file system properly?

  Doing some reading on Stack Overflow, I've found a lot of information suggesting that proper organization of a file system is crucial to a well-written web app. One of the key pieces of evidence is high-frequency references to "separation of concerns" in questions related to keeping programs organized. Now, I've found some information on organizing file systems (Filesystem Hierarchy Standard) from 2004. It raises only two concerns: first, the standard's a bit dated, so I believe it may be possible to do better given the changes in technology over the past 8 years; second, and most important, my application is very small compared to an entire Linux distro. I think that the file system should be organized very differently because of that. Here's what I'm looking at, currently: /scripts, /databases, /www -> /dev, /production -> login, router, admin pages, /sites -> content types, static pages /modules, /includes, /css, /media -> /module-specific-media

• Advice: should I focus on PHP + MySQL, or split my time for more JS and CSS? [closed]

  I started learning web development about three months ago (in between working my regular job), and I'm finally starting to get some vague, distant notion of understanding. I find the server-side stuff the most interesting; though I've not gone anywhere near Apache quite yet, which I assume will be necessary at some point. As cool as toying around with visuals and UI is, programming and database stuff inspires me with new ideas and possibilities every minute (I've even bought, on a whim, a wonderfully dry bunch of books on database theory and relational algebra). And whatever CSS or Javascript tutorial I'm doing, it often feels like a distraction from the PHP/MySQL stuff I'd rather be playing with. For someone like me who's just starting out, which is the most advisable course of action? (in terms of being marketable as a programmer): To focus on PHP and SQL stuff exclusively, and only once I master those to diversify my skills. To first learn all three (PHP/MySQL, Javascript, CSS and design) and only once I'm fluent in all three focus on PHP and databases?

  Most of programming languages (Server-side languages for web development) needs a learning curve and requires some time to learn. However, I'm sure there is a difference between them. So, for example you can master the 'X' language in less time than the 'Y' language. I'm a beginner in web development, meaning that I just know HTML and CSS and now want to choose the right tool for building dynamic sites. What I'm looking for is a language that is easy to master in less time than other languages. So, is there a language that can suit my needs? If so, please let me know about what should I learn in it? (for example, which frameworks?, libraries?, IDEs?, databases?, etc). In the end, I don't want to regret my choice of the language and want to learn solid basics in it and in programming in general.

  I got some excel files, I need to read data from it and upload data to some database (I need to use firebird, but whatever). Over the past couple of weeks, we've noticed that the search results from Google for some of our drupal-powered sites are having their page titles hijacked somehow. An example would be: free streaming porn - [Actual page title] There are other variations of the porn prefix, that's one of the more tame ones. I looked in the databases for each of these sites and the titles haven't actually been changed or anything along those lines. When you click on the result to visit the page everything looks normal (sans porn stuff). Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction as to what the cause of this is? Searching Google for the potential problem isn't being much help, yet. Thanks in advance!

  Hi All,   Sysprep creates a snapshot of a virtual machine with BizTalk Server 2010 installed for quick deployment on other virtual machines   Prerequisites Before using Sysprep, you should have some knowledge of using virtual machines with Hyper-V. You should also have a virtual machine with a clean, typical installation of BizTalk Server and all of its prerequisites. Sysprep will run on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista with SP1. Description Sysprep creates a VHD of a BizTalk Server 2010 installation (including the operating system and all prerequisites) for quick deployment on other virtual machines. An image created using Sysprep will choose a new computer name in order to join the domain the first time it starts. To get BizTalk Server running properly, it is necessary to update various instances of the computer name that are stored in the registry and databases. • Webmatrix fails to connect PHP website to MySQL

  I downloaded the latest versions of Webmatrix and MySQL. I downloaded a PHP-MySQL Connector: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/php-mysqlnd/ In the "Databases" Workspace I pressed "New Connection" button and choose "MySQL Connection" In the Dialog box I filled-in all connection details -- It looks like the database was added. But then when I double-click on the database, I get a short error message saying it cannot connect. I tried everything, searched the web... I'm sure it's a very simple question, so please whoever can help I'll be grateful. I think best solution for me would be if someone could please just give me a link to download of: Webmatrix,MySQL,Connector; and instructions on how to install and then how to connect. This would be the safest way to help me.
