• How to cope with "Hidden IT..." Who writes and maintains the ad-hoc software applications?

  Bigger companies usually have the problem, that it is not possible to write all programs employees want (to save time and to optimize processes) due to a lack of staff and money. Then hidden programs will be created by some people having (at least some) coding experience (or by cheap students/interns...). Under some circumstances these applications will raise in importance and spread from one user to a whole department. Then there is the critical point: Who will maintain the application, add new features, ...? And this app is critical. It IS needed. But the intern has left the company. No one knows how it works. You only have a bunch of sources and some sort of documentation. How do you cope with these applications? Can you "forbid" them? Can you control them? Do you have to write all apps (not Excel macros or some minor stuff) in the IT department?

• What steps should be taken to ensure that an open source database gets ready for production?

  I am considering using GridSQL in a production environment. However, I do have some indications that it is not ready. One is that it got excluded by the offering of EnterpriseDB a while ago, and the forums seem to report a few wrong results and relatively severe bugs. The alternatives to GridSQL, however cost around 100.000$ to buy, so I was thinking to utilize some of this money to ensure that GridSQL gets ready for production. At the same time, I could risk spending 50.000$ and months of work on the development of GridSQL, just to discover that the design was flawed and that a complete rewrite is needed. Then I would have to buy the commercial alternatives to GridSQL and the existence of my startup would be at risk. Question What steps would you take to ensure that there is as little risk as possible that the worst case scenario described above would happen? It is unrealistic that I could do much testing nor code review/coding myself (I am also not the best developer), so please describe where to find the guys that would need to do the work.

  I have a prospect with both an idea and an existing customer of theirs who want to pay for this idea to be implemented. The customer want to pay only when the implementation is complete. My prospect has separate investors that will fund the implementation. The prospect wants to know how much I will charge for the implementation so that he knows how much to ask the investors for. Before I can estimate reliably I need to work with the prospect to develop an implementation plan. This planning work will take time that I want to charge for. The prospect doesn't have enough money to pay me until the investment. I want to make sure I am paid for the planning. How can I resolve this?

• How do I duplicate a Box2d simulation, mid-simulation?

  I want to serialize the state mid-game, send it over the network to an identical computer (same CPU, same OS, same binary), load it there, and have the two games run in tandem doing the exact same simulation, without one of them drifting off and going haywire. In short: I want pop-in, pop-out networking support on my HIGHLY physics-intensive game, where sending object coordinates every few seconds is impossible, due to having thousands of objects, and many clients. I tried this with Box2D, and saving an object's location/velocity/etc wasn't enough... there's internal state that's not accessible through any public methods. My current workaround is to force EVERY client to save its entire worldstate and reload it from scratch, whenever a new player connects... but this is obviously bad practice, because it hangs the game for everyone whenever someone new connects. However, it works, with zero desynchronization. So, anyone know of any other techniques that can help me? Or should I just kiss my project goodbye?

• Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

  I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

  What are the shortest licenses with aims for programmers/code. I have found only MIT that is page-long. What are other licenses that have approximately the same length or even shorter? Edit: Ok, length is not only criteria(I haven't expected one-line licenses, I have understaminate you people). I need easy to read and short licenses. It is meant for people who want to use my code not for lawyers who want to read long licenses. I am creating small codes to use by most people probably free of charge. I don't want useless information to be required, for example: what is X(for example: what is software, source code etc.) very specific information(for example: you can use it shop, opera, school... free of charge; but instead "use it everywhere but don't take money" Depending on type of code I would like to allow/disallow commercial usage.

• Best Graphics card (Setup) for three, high-res monitors attached to desktop

  I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance! • Is there any Google Adsense revenue if a visitor rolls over (hovers) on an ad unit?

  I have noticed an increase in interactive flash animations especilly on 300px wide adsense ads. Many of them ask the visitor to rollover to either reveal what the ad is about, show a clip, etc. So I wonder: the visitor is giving attention to this ad, is viewing its message -- without clicking on it. In essence, the ad agency's objective is accomplished without a click, which would be a significant money saver if PPC is considered. This seems very ingenious on their part, and I wonder how this is handled by Google. Shouldn't there be a fee for a publisher if visitors interact with ads, regardless of clicks? CTR becomes irrelevant in this context. Are you aware of anything being discussed in this respect?

• How to implement custom texture formats in Android?

  What I know: Android can load PNG, BMP, WEBP,... via BitmapFactory. What I want to achive: Load my own 2D file format (e.g. 1-bit texture with a 1-bit alpha channel) and output a RGBA8888 texture. Question: Is there any interface to achieve this?(or any other way) The resulting image is used as a texture for a 3D model. Why would you do that? Saving phone memory and download bandwidth while expanding the texture at runtime to RAM seems reasonable for very simple textures.

• Business Analyst vs. Architect [closed]

  I'm a developer of a few years in the financial industry and will soon need to decide what career path to try and row towards. Broadly speaking I have two options: something more 'people' oriented like BAs, or keep coding and try to make more technical decisions like the Architects do where I currently work. Here are my perceptions right now: Business Analysts: get paid way more than devs once they do their job, it seems like they usually have no worries more likely to go REALLY high up in the organization (VPs, etc) Architects: things like certification matters (I see this as a con) called in when things go wrong more than anyone else (weekends & overtime) long career path to get to (dev - senior dev - team lead - architect) I would find the latter more intellectually rewarding, but when I look at it I just can't justify it in terms of lifestyle. Am I wrong / what am I missing? Can you really make a lot of money in a technical role or must you really get out of coding? Thank you for any constructive input.

• How do you balance between "do it right" and "do it ASAP" in your daily work?

  I find myself pondering this question times and times again. I want to do things the right way, to write a clean, understandable, correct code that is easy to maintain, but what I really do pretty often is writing a patch upon patch just because there is no time, clients are waiting, a bug should be fixed overnight, the company is losing money on this problem, a manager is pressing hard etc. etc. I know perfectly well that in a long shot I am wasting much more time on these patches, but as this time is spread over months of work, nobody cares. Also, as one of my managers used to say, we don't know if there will be this long shot if we will not fix it now. I am sure I am not the only one entrapped in this endless real/ideal choices. So how you, fellow programmers, are coping with this?

  I am searching for any good site that teaches C++, that can explain most to all things about it(general) and has a decent active community. About Me: I am new to programming(knows nothing of it, so please bare with me), I have only learned(to a very basic form) LUA scripting Language, so yes I am your complete newbie. • android game: how to approach mutliplayer

  I'm making a single player game that is near completion, and I am already starting to think about giving the game multiplayer. The multiplayer would basically be finding someone to play against, likely in a waiting room or just have a match-making function, and then having a pokemon style battle between the people in real time. I think it would be relatively simple as I'm just sending information about each attack(move chosen and damage) and what it did back and forth, but I'm not sure what resources to consult for this. I am very new to Android/Java development and really just learning as I go. I have heard a bit about Skiller, but I'm still unfamiliar with using other SDK's and how easy it may be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what SDK's or methods for accomplishing this. I currently have no money to spend on software development, but I'd like to get started on learning how to do this.

• Creating thumbnails with the same name as the pictures

  Please, here is my little code for creating thumbnails of pictures saved in a folder named 'pictures', and saving them in another folder named 'thumbs'. ! /bin/bash for i in *.jpg do convert -thumbnail 100 pictures/$i thumbs/$i done However, there two things the program doesn't do: 1) It does not retain the name of the pictures in the thumbnail. For instance, I would want it to generate a thumbnail with the name pic.jpg for a picture named pic.jpg 2) Also, when I run the program, i don't want it to generate the thumbnail for a picture it has already generated its thumbnail, unless that picture has been modified. • Data structure for file search

  I've asked this question before and I got a few answers/idea, but I'm not sure how to implement them. I'm building a telecom messaging solution. Currently, I'm using a database to save my transaction/messages for the network stack I've built, and as you know it's slower than using a data structure (hash, linkedlist, etc...). My problem is that the data can be really huge, and it won't fit in the memory. I was thinking of saving the records in a file and the a key and line number in a hash, then if I want to access some record then I can get the line number from the hash, and get it from the file. I don't know how efficient is this; I think the database is doing a way better job than this on my behalf. Please share whatever you have in mind.

• Is it legal to develop a game usung some version of D&D, something similar to Baldurs Gate?

  For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldurs Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D?   I have an Android app which I added adMob ads to. They only work tough when the user is online. Now the problem is, the app is specially made for offline use, so pretty much nobody will ever get to see one. The app is free to download, but I would still like to make a few cents out of it.   I couldn't quite think of a proper description, so as Wikipedia puts it so beautifully: Financial services are the economic services provided by the finance industry, which encompasses a broad range of organizations that manage money, including credit unions, banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, consumer finance companies, stock brokerages, investment funds and some government sponsored enterprises. These are quite a range of industries. I've already thought about how banks specifically have gotten involved with app markets allowing users to make transfers on the go, and this goes with cloud computing, but what else could there be apart from mobile technologies and cloud computing? Or how else could they be used? I feel like I'm thinking about this wrong.. Apart from mobile computing and cloud computing, what other examples will influence the sector either positively or negatively?
