  • Add game mechanics through equipment?

    In a game with different weapons and armor that actually affect more than just player stats, how would you achieve such effect? (These are just examples not concrete ideas ) For example we could have a handgun, uzi and then you have the graviton-gun. The first two would just shoot bullets, the third one does more than just shoot a simple projectile. It could allow the player to hold an enemy and drag it to use it as a meat shield. The player could also wear generic armor but at some point wears armor that can absorb projectiles. After absorbing enough projectiles you can shoot a giant blast. All these weapons/armor have different "behaviors" that either just raise stats or actually add new mechanics. In a simple case most guns would have similar properties and changing a few settings would create a new weapon (handgun shoots at an interval of x amount of seconds, lower this number and you have a machinegun). This obviously does not work if you intend to do more than just shoot projectiles. I'm pretty much stuck on writing the interface structure. While weapons and armor have different purposes they should both be able to process certain effects that change or add mechanics in the game world.

  • Command line mode only -- successful login only brings me back to login screen

    whenever I log in the screen goes black, I see a glimpse of terminal-esque text, and then it brings me back to the log in screen (Ubuntu 12.04). I can enter and log in via the command line. The guest account works find. I think this happened because I edited some Xorg related file trying to make an external monitor work with my laptop. I copy pasted from a forum post so I dont recall the file or what i put in the file. Can't find the forum post again and my bash history wasn't recorded from that session. I tried reinstalling Xorg and ubuntu-desktop, nvidia, resetting any configs I could find... I'm really at a loss of what to do.   • Inflector for .NET

    I was writing conventions for FluentNHibernate the other day and I ran into the need to pluralize a given string and immediately thought of the ruby on rails Inflector.  It turns out there is a .NET library out there also capable of doing word inflection, originally written (I believe) by Andrew Peters, though the link I had no longer works.  The entire Inflector class is only a little over 200 lines long and can be easily included into any project, and contains the Pluralize() method along with a few other helpful methods (like Singularize(), Camelize(), Capitalize(), etc). The Inflector class is available in its entirety from my github repository https://github.com/srkirkland/Inflector.  In addition to the Inflector.cs class I added tests for every single method available so you can gain an understanding of what each method does.  Also, if you are wondering about a specific test case feel free to fork my project and add your own test cases to ensure Inflector does what you expect.     Today Uncle Bob Martin, a genuine hero, showed this video In this video Bob Martin claims that our programming languages are at the right level for our problems at this time. One of the reasons I get from this video as that he Bob Martin sees us detail managers and our problems are at the detail level. This is the first time I have to disagree with Bob Martin and was wondering what the people at programmers think about this. First there is a difference between MDA and MDE MDA in itself hasn't worked and I blame way to much formalisation at a level you can't formalize these kind of problems. MDE and MDD are still trying to prove themselves and in my mind show great promise. e.g. look at MetaEdit The detail still needs to be management in my mind, but you do so in one place (framework or generators) instead of at multiple places. Right for our kind of problems ? I think depends on what problems you look at. Do the current programming languages keep up with the current demands on time to market ? Are they good at bridging the business IT communication gap ? So what do you think ?

  • StreamInsight and Reactive Framework Challenge

    In his blogpost Roman from the StreamInsight team asked if we could create a Reactive Framework version of what he had done in the post using StreamInsight.  For those who don’t know, the Reactive Framework or Rx to its friends is a library for composing asynchronous and event-based programs using observable collections in the .Net framework.  Yes, there is some overlap between StreamInsight and the Reactive Extensions but StreamInsight has more flexibility and power in its temporal algebra (Windowing, Alteration of event headers) Well here are two alternate ways of doing what Roman did.     I've installed Magento on IIS in folder: E:\mydomain\wwwroot (I already have it all running correctly). I have no deeper folder magento, I placed all files directly in the wwwroot folder, so: wwwroot\app wwwroot\downloader wwwroot\errors wwwroot\includes etc... UPDATE: since I'm on IIS my .htaccess is ignored completely and my web.config rules are used instead. To avoid this kind of problems, it is recommended to use a thread-safe and synchronized map such as java.util.Map, java.util.Hashtable or com.tangosol.util.SafeHashMap. You may also need to use the synchronizedMap(Map) method from Class java.util.Collections.

    I’ve been using the T4Toolbox to help generate my ASP.NET MVC models and scaffolding for a while now.  Another developer tried using my generator project last week and ran into troubles due to a breaking change around the RenderCore() and TransformText() methods in support for VS 2010.  If you upgraded to the latest version of T4Toolbox and receive a build error similar to the following, you are probably in the same boat: GeneratedTextTransformation.[Template].RenderCore(): no suitable method found to override We took the easy way out.  I had him uninstall the latest version of T4Toolbox and install version 9.7.25.1 which my templates were initially coded against.  For now, that worked great, but it sounds like I’ll be doing some rework of the 20+ templates in my project to support Visual Studio 2010 when we migrate later this month.

    I have an Umbraco site for personal use that I want to also use as a blog. I'm trying to put together the XSLT to grab the top three posts from the nodes in the Blog tree (node id = 1063) and display these on a tab page that is incorporated into the front page. The following image illustrates the node hierarchy: With my extremely limited appreciation of XSLT, I'm unable to grab the node ID of the "Blog" id and take the 3 pages below that to display in the "Top Posts" part of my site which is found under the "Frontpage Tabs" node. All the examples I find work with the "current page", which is typically the top-level node, "Personal Site". How should I accomplish this?

  • How do I let programmers know something useful?

    Quite often I go through pain to discover how to do something useful, in this case how to get PHP running on Google App Engine without the 'resin.jar too big' problem, but I have nowhere to let people know. In this particular case, the web answers were incomplete, outdated or plain wrong. I could create a blog, but it's overkill. I just want let programmers know a quick solution/approach. I'm not sure it's the done thing to ask a question and then answer it. In short, it'd be nice to be able to just dump a sort of combined question/answer/snippet, then let others comment as usual, shoot it down, like it, whatever. How do the rest of you approach this?   • Strategy to find bottleneck in a network

    Our enterprise is having some problem when the number of incoming request goes beyond a certain amount. To make things simpler, we have N websites that uses, amongst other, a local web service. This service is hosted by IIS, and it's a .NET 4.0 (C#) application executed in a farm. It's REST-oriented, built around OpenRasta. As already mentioned, by stress testing it with JMeter, we've found that beyond a certain amount of request the service's performance drop. Anyway, this service is, amongst other, a client itself of other 3 distinct web services and also a client for a DB server, so it's not very clear what really is the culprit of this abrupt decay. In turn, these 3 other web services are installed in our farm too, and client of other DB servers (and services, possibly, that are out of my team control). What strategy do you suggest to try to locate where the bottleneck(s) are? Do you have any high-level suggestions?
