  • Saving Data to Registry on Windows 7

    - by Jim Fell
    I heard that Windows 7 restricts access to its registry, so that applications cannot write directly to it. Is this so? I am developing an application in C#, and I would like to be able to save things such as port settings, last file used, etc. between sessions. Is the registry still a good option, or is there another preferred means of doing this now? Thanks.

  • Ruby - Is there a way to overwrite the __FILE__ variable?

    - by Markus Orrelly
    I'm doing some unit testing, and some of the code is checking to see if files exist based on the relative path of the currently-executing script by using the FILE variable. I'm doing something like this: if File.directory?(File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__),'..','..','directory')) blah blah blah ... else raise "Can't find directory" end I'm trying to find a way to make it fail in the unit tests without doing anything drastic. Being able to overwrite the __ FILE __ variable would be easiest, but as far as I can tell, it's impossible. Any tips?

    - by user1075106
    I'm writing an web-app that keeps track of deadlines. With this app you have to be able to update records that are being saved in an SQL DB. However I'm having some problem with my update in my aspx-file. <asp:GridView ID="gv_editMilestones" runat="server" DataSourceID="sql_ds_milestones" CellPadding="4" ForeColor="#333333" GridLines="None" Font-Size="Small" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="id" Visible="false" onrowupdated="gv_editMilestones_RowUpdated" onrowupdating="gv_editMilestones_RowUpdating" onrowediting="gv_editMilestones_RowEditing"> <RowStyle BackColor="#F7F6F3" ForeColor="#333333" /> <Columns> <asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="id" HeaderText="id" SortExpression="id" ReadOnly="True" Visible="false"/> <asp:BoundField DataField="ms_id" HeaderText="ms_id" SortExpression="ms_id" ReadOnly="True"/> <asp:BoundField DataField="ms_description" HeaderText="ms_description" SortExpression="ms_description"/> <%-- <asp:BoundField DataField="ms_resp_team" HeaderText="ms_resp_team" SortExpression="ms_resp_team"/>--%> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="ms_resp_team" SortExpression="ms_resp_team"> <ItemTemplate> <%# Eval("ms_resp_team") %> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="DDL_ms_resp_team" runat="server" DataSourceID="sql_ds_ms_resp_team" DataTextField="team_name" DataValueField="id"> <%--SelectedValue='<%# Bind("ms_resp_team") %>'--%> </asp:DropDownList> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:BoundField DataField="ms_focal_point" HeaderText="ms_focal_point" SortExpression="ms_focal_point" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="ms_exp_date" HeaderText="ms_exp_date" SortExpression="ms_exp_date" DataFormatString="{0:d}"/> <asp:BoundField DataField="ms_deal" HeaderText="ms_deal" SortExpression="ms_deal" ReadOnly="True"/> <asp:CheckBoxField DataField="ms_active" HeaderText="ms_active" SortExpression="ms_active"/> </Columns> <FooterStyle BackColor="#CCCC99" /> <PagerStyle BackColor="#F7F7DE" ForeColor="Black" HorizontalAlign="Right" /> <SelectedRowStyle BackColor="#CE5D5A" Font-Bold="True" ForeColor="White" /> <HeaderStyle BackColor="#5D7B9D" Font-Bold="True" ForeColor="White" /> <AlternatingRowStyle BackColor="White" /> <EditRowStyle BackColor="#999999" /> </asp:GridView> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="sql_ds_milestones" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:testServer %>" SelectCommand="SELECT [id] ,[ms_id] ,[ms_description] ,(SELECT [team_name] FROM [NSBP].[dbo].[tbl_teams] as teams WHERE milestones.[ms_resp_team] = teams.[id]) as 'ms_resp_team' ,[ms_focal_point] ,[ms_exp_date] ,(SELECT [deal] FROM [NSBP].[dbo].[tbl_deals] as deals WHERE milestones.[ms_deal] = deals.[id]) as 'ms_deal' ,[ms_active] FROM [NSBP].[dbo].[tbl_milestones] as milestones" UpdateCommand="UPDATE [NSBP].[dbo].[tbl_milestones] SET [ms_description] = @ms_description ,[ms_focal_point] = @ms_focal_point ,[ms_active] = @ms_active WHERE [ms_id] = @ms_id"> <UpdateParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="ms_description" Type="String" /> <%-- <asp:Parameter Name="ms_resp_team" Type="String" />--%> <asp:Parameter Name="ms_focal_point" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="ms_exp_date" Type="DateTime" /> <asp:Parameter Name="ms_active" Type="Boolean" /> <%-- <asp:Parameter Name="ms_id" Type="String" />--%> </UpdateParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource> You can see my complete GridView-structure + my datasource bound to this GridView. There is nothing written in my onrowupdating-function in my code-behind file. Thx in advance

  • asp.net C# variable as Image1.ImageUrl property

    - by ModS
    I would like to Click "buttonImage1" and have that store "photos/Image1.jpg" into a var called Photo. then have ButtonImage2.ImageUrl = (Photo). I am using an UpdatePanel to refresh the area with the images so the only problem is actually setting the variable correctly and then using it correctly. Reworded: how can I store a path to an image in a variable then set it correctly as a image's URL path? protected void Button2_Click(object sender, ImageClickEventArgs e) { Evt = ("~/events/ev2.jpg"); } protected void Image2_Click(object sender, ImageClickEventArgs e) { Image1.ImageUrl = (Evt); }

  • How do I execute a sql statement through a variable (dyname sql) that tries to do an insert into a variable table?

    - by Testifier
    If I do what I wanna do with a TEMPORARY TABLE, it works fine: DECLARE @CTRFR VARCHAR(MAX) SET @CTRFR = 'select blah blah blah' -- <-- very long select statement. this returns a 0 or some greater number. Please note! --> I NEED THIS NUMBER. IF EXISTS ( SELECT * FROM sys.objects WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo][#CTRFRResult]') AND type IN ( N'U' ) ) DROP TABLE [dbo].[#CTRFRResult] CREATE TABLE #CTRFRResult ( CTRFRResult VARCHAR(MAX) ) SET @CTRFR = 'insert into #CTRFRResult ' + @CTRFR EXEC(@CTRFR) The above works fine. The problem is that several databases are using the same TEMP table. Therefore I need to use a VARIABLE table (instead of a temporary table). What I have below is not working because it says that the table must be declared. DECLARE @CTRFRResult TABLE ( CTRFRResult VARCHAR(MAX) ) SET @CTRFR = 'insert into @CTRFRResult ' + @CTRFR -- I think the issue is here. EXEC(@CTRFR) Setting @CTRFR to 'insert into...' is not working because I'm assuming the table name is out of scope. How would I go about mimicking the temporary table code using a variable table?

  • Is my Perl script grabbing environment variabless from "someplace else"?

    - by Michael Wilson
    On a Solaris box in a "mysterious production system" I'm running a Perl script that references an environment variable. No big deal. The contents of that variable from the shell both pre- and post-execution are what I expect. However, when reported by the script, it appears as though it's running in some other sub-shell which is clobbering my vars with different values for the duration of the script. Unfortunately I really can't paste the code. I'm trying to get an atomic case, but I'm at my wit's end here.

  • Static variable for optimization

    - by keithjgrant
    I'm wondering if I can use a static variable for optimization: public function Bar() { static $i = moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall(); if ($i) { return something(); } else { return somethingElse(); } } I know that once $i is initialized, it won't be changed by by that line of code on successive calls to Bar(). I assume this means that moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall() won't be evaluated every time I call, but I'd like to know for certain. Once PHP sees a static variable that has been initialized, does it skip over that line of code? In other words, is this going to optimize my execution time if I make a lot of calls to Bar(), or am I wasting my time?

  • How do I add an object to a binary tree based on the value of a member variable?

    - by Max
    How can I get a specific value from an object? I'm trying to get a value of an instance for eg. ListOfPpl newListOfPpl = new ListOfPpl(id, name, age); Object item = newListOfPpl; How can I get a value of name from an Object item?? Even if it is easy or does not interest you can anyone help me?? Edited: I was trying to build a binary tree contains the node of ListOfPpl, and need to sort it in the lexicographic. Here's my code for insertion on the node. Any clue?? public void insert(Object item){ Node current = root; Node follow = null; if(!isEmpty()){ root = new Node(item, null, null); return; }boolean left = false, right = false; while(current != null){ follow = current; left = false; right = false; //I need to compare and sort it if(item.compareTo(current.getFighter()) < 0){ current = current.getLeft(); left = true; }else { current = current.getRight(); right = true; } }if(left) follow.setLeft(new Node(item, null, null)); else follow.setRight(new Node(item, null, null)); }

  • Homework - C# - Creating an object instance with a button click

    - by Erica
    I'm new to learning Windows Programming with C#. My current assignment is to create a very simple bank account program: The user enters the accountholder name, account number and beginning balance, then presses a "Continue" button to work with that account by making deposits and withdrawals. I wrote a separate "BankAccount" class with the required data members and methods. I've put the code for the creation of the BankAccount object in the Continue button click event BankAccount currentAccount = new BankAccount(acctName, acctNum, beginningBalance); But that seems to make it local to that method only, and currentAccount is not recognized when I'm programming the click event for the "Record Transactions" (deposits and withdrawals) button. How and where should the creation of the BankAccount object be coded in order for it to be created when the "Continue" button is clicked and also recognized in the "Record Transactions" button click event? Please let me know if any clarification is needed, or if you need to see part or all of my code.

  • How do I display a sting, based on which id is set as selected?

    - by Cam
    I'd like to display a text string (to be positioned above ul) depending on which link is set to selected by the chgClass fuction. The ids for each display via an alert right now, but I can't seem to make them appear in "english". I know I can set up an array stating "id=text string" but when I do it seems to break the code I already have... <script type="text/javascript"> var Lst; function CngClass(obj){ if (typeof(obj)=='string') obj=document.getElementById(obj); if (Lst) Lst.className=''; obj.className='selected'; Lst=obj; alert(obj.id); } </script> </head> <body onload="CngClass('POSITION_WITHOUT_NOTIFY')"> <div class="slider"> <ul class="bar"> <li class="deny"><a onclick="CngClass(this);" id="POSITION_NOT_ALLOWED" href="#">Deny</a></li> <li class="askDeny"><a onclick="CngClass(this);" id="NOTIFY_POSITION_IF_GRANTED" href="#">Ask Deny</a></li> <li class="askAllow"><a onclick="CngClass(this);" id="NOTIFY_POSITION_IF_NO_RESPONSE" href="#">Ask Allow</a></li> <li class="notify"><a onclick="CngClass(this);" id="NOTIFY_POSITION" href="#">Notfiy</a></li> <li class="allow"><a onclick="CngClass(this);" id="POSITION_WITHOUT_NOTIFY" href="#">Allow</a></li> </ul> </div> </body> </html>

  • Does the for foreach construct in java create a hard or soft copy?

    - by Doug
    Say I have the following piece of java code ArrayList<Double> myList = new Double[100]; for (Double x : myList) x = randomDouble(); Does this actually modify myList or just the dummy variable? I realize I should just try this code segment out, but I think this is the sort of thing I should be able to google or search for on this site, and several queries so far have turned up nothing useful.

  • send javaScript variable to php variable

    - by mrbunyrabit
    First i thought that i had to convert javascript to php, but then i found out that cant because of server and client side executions. So now I simply want to send ONE variable <script type="text/javascript"> function scriptvariable() { var theContents = "the variable"; } </script> to a php variable <?php $phpvariable ?> That function in the javascript executes when lets say i click on a button. Now i have Nooo idea how to get that phpvariable Equal to the javascript one so i can use that phpvariable to look up stuff in my Database. I know i can add it to my url or some thing, and just refresh the page.. But id like to do it with AJAX as further in my webpage i might have to use this Ajax method.. So is there an easy way to do this without having to dump pages of code on my page to do one simple thing?

  • Android Static Variable Scope and Lifetime

    - by Edison
    I have an application that has a Service uses a ArrayList to store in the background for a very long time, the variable is initialized when the service started. The service is in the background and there will be frequent access to the variable (that's why i don't want to use file management or settings since it will be very expensive for a file I/O for the sake of battery life). The variable will likely to be ~1MB-2MB over its life tie. Is it safe to say that it will never be nulled by GC or the system or is there any way to prevent it? Thanks.

  • How to store double using SharedPrefrences?

    - by user3924167
    I am having trouble storing a double in the phone's memory. What are my other options if this isnt possible. Basically what the code is aiming to do using sharedprefrences is take the stored value of "Alcohol" spending and then add whatever the input is in the editText to it and then store that new value for the next time. Running total of spending on alcohol **Can someone please help with this issue and be detailed where x y & z should go in the project. The user selects from a spinner, which works. public void addInput(){ double dblCostInput = Double.valueOf(inputBox.getText().toString()); String strCategories= spinnerCategories.getSelectedItem().toString(); if(strCategories.equals("Alcohol")) { alcoholSpend = alcoholSpend + dblCostInput; inputBox.setText(""); nextInput(); inputBox.setText("Your Spending on"+strCategories+" is: " +d.format(alcoholSpend)); }

    Say I have an environment variable myvar myvar=\tapple\n when the following command will print out this variable perl -e 'print "$ENV{myvar}"' I will literally have \tapple\n, however, I want those control chars to be evaluated and not escaped. How would I achieve it? In the real world $ENV residing in substitution, but I hope the answer will cover that.

  • Reason for unintuitive UnboundLocalError behaviour 2

    - by Jonathan
    Following up on Reason for unintuitive UnboundLocalError behaviour (I will assume you've read it). Consider the following Python script: def f(): # a+=1 # 1 aa=a aa+=1 # b+='b' # 2 bb=b bb+='b' c[0]+='c' # 3 c.append('c') cc=c cc.append('c') # 4 a=1 b='b' c=['c'] f() print a print b print c The result of the script is: 1 b ['cc', 'c', 'c'] The commented out lines (marked 1,2) are lines that would through an UnboundLocalError and the SO question I referenced explains why. However, the line marked 3 works! By default, lists are copied by reference in Python, therefore it's understandable that c changes when cc changes. But why should Python allow c to change in the first place, if it didn't allow changes to a and b directly from the method's scope? I don't see how the fact that by default lists are copied by reference in Python should make this design decision inconsistent. What am I missing folks?

  • Changing the value of a variable

    - by neirpycc
    I'm trying to build a simple scoring app but I'm running into a problem trying to keep it so I don't have to repeat a bunch of code to deal with each 'base' individually. The basic idea is that when I click a button the script will; 1) grab the ID of said button 2) split the ID into two parts - (a) the bases name and (b) the button type (plus/minus) 3) if it's plus - add to the bases score, if it's minus - subtract from the bases score 4) update the assigned div with the new value The part I'm stuck at is adding and subtracting. I can't seem to get this to work. Here is the code: $('.base button').click(function() { var b1Score = 0; var b2Score = 0; var b3Score = 0; var b4Score = 0; var b5Score = 0; var clickedButton = $(this).attr('id'); var buttonInfo = clickedButton.split('-'); var baseClicked = buttonInfo[0]; var baseDirection = buttonInfo[1]; var baseDiv = ('#' + baseClicked); console.log('You clicked ' + clickedButton + '.'); if (baseDirection.indexOf('plus') >= 0) { console.log('Increasing ' + baseClicked + '!'); ++; $(baseDiv).val(); } else { console.log('Decreasing ' + baseClicked + '!'); --; $(baseDiv).val(); } }); ++; and --; are placeholders for where the adding and subtracting needs to happen. I just can't figure out how to get it to add or subtract from the correct value. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Flex Application for PlayBook Text Input Variable

    - by user568128
    I know this is probably a very simple question, but can someone please walk me through how to take what a user inputs into a s:TextInput and use that as a variable in a JSON data request? Basically, I want to have a user enter a search term, like "math" and then have that placed into a variable so I can use it in a JSON request. Something like public var q:String, except that my search box (and hence user input) is on another "view" of the application. I've just started with Flex Mobile applications and I might be way out of my league. Does anyone know how to do this?

  • Long variable names

    Lets say i have a variable that contains the number of search engine names in a file, what would you name it? number_of_seach_engine_names search_engine_name_count num_search_engines engines engine_names other name? The first name describes what the variable contains precisely, but isn't it too long?, any advice for choosing variable names? especially how to shorten a name that is too long or what kind of abbreviations to use?
