• Distributed version control systems merge easiness details

  I have just read Joel's blogpost concerning distributed version control systems and can't understand the main idea. He says that SVN thinks in terms of versions while Mercurial thinks in terms of changes. And, according to Joel, it solves merging problems. I heard this idea several times and still haven't conceived it. As I know, SVN's merging mechanism is based on changes (diffs) too. So what is the difference? I have no experience with distributed version control systems but I actively use SVN branching/merging and had no serious problems with it. Of course there are merging conflicts sometimes (when one piece of code was changed in both branches). But I see no way how this problem can be solved automatically by some kind of control version system.

• What to monitor on MSSQL Server

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!) • Does all SPWeb or SPSite instances automatically disposed when console app process has ended?

  We have Best practices on using disposable object in SharePoint. But i`m thinking - can I skip these when using Console Application? That's some code I want to execute once and after that process has finished. Do or don't SPSite and SPWeb's remain opened somwhere? Why i`m asking this? I just don't want to stress when using something like var lists = from web in site.AllWebs.Cast<SPWeb>() where web is meeting workspace && list is task list select list then do some stuff on lists etc. Some serious resource leak there because webs get opened, filtered and NOT closed. So should I worry in console app?

• Cannot get mysql gem to work in Snow Leopard, unable to setup ruby on rails environment

  I am having some serious problems, however this seems to be a common thing. I have Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and here are my other version info: MySQL mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.46, for apple-darwin10.2.0 (i386) using readline 5.1 gem 1.3.6 ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-08 patchlevel 173) [universal-darwin10.0] My problem is that no matter what I do to try and install the mysql gem, i still get the error every time i do rake db:migrate uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes I have installed the mysql gem based on instructions around the web that say to use export ARCHFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" ; sudo gem install --no-rdoc --no-ri mysql -- -v 2.7 --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config This DOES work, as it gives this output: Building native extensions. This could take a while... Successfully installed mysql-2.8.1 1 gem installed Any help would be greatly appreciated

• Overriding PEAR error handler

  Hi everyone, I'm currently working on an application that requires lots of external libraries. My job right now is set a unique error handler that will manage every error. So far, I found 7 different types of PEAR errors: PEAR_ERROR_RETURN: PEAR_ERROR_EXCEPTION: PEAR_ERROR_CALLBACK: PEAR_ERROR_EXCEPTION: PEAR_ERROR_PRINT: PEAR_ERROR_TRIGGER: PEAR_ERROR_DIE: I want to handle only the serious error (like the native E*_ERROR). The only problem is I have absolutely no idea about PEAR error criticity ! Those names are more related to the way of handling them than to their seriousness... Is there a real documentation about it ? I guess a better solution would consist in using their pushErrorHandling, but I just don't understand how to use it... If someone here knows, I'd be grateful... Thanks in advance !

• What is the equivalent to IScriptControl for Web.UI.Page?

  We've been using IScriptControl to tie javascript objects to our UserControls and ServerControls, and it's worked fine. The problem is that ASP.NET seems to provide no method to tie a javascript object to a Page. Up to now, we've been putting plain functions in the global namespace, but I am developing a serious allergy to that practice. It'd be easy enough to wrap our functions into a javascript class, and to include the javascript file on the page, but how to instantiate the object, how to reference it from callback events, and how to pass data to it from the code-behind, I haven't figured out. Or rather, the methods we've been using up to now (hidden fields, emitted javascript strings, etc.), really bug me. Anyone have better ideas?

• .NET OutOfMemoryException on XMLSerializer.Serialize

  I have a web site that is throwing OutOfMemoryExceptions on whenever it gets to the following spot in my code: XmlSerializer xs = new XmlSerializer(t, xoverrides); Seeing how this only happens when it is on the web server, i don't have a ton of information on why this is happening. I know that the objects that it is serializing aren't anything too serious-- definitely less than a MB each. Have you had this before? Feel like helping me diagnose the issue?   I have learned programming on .NET. It's been 4 years since I have started (serious) programming, I gained experience in VBA, JavaScript but mainly C#. I have spent a lot of time trying to grasp the good coding practices, object orientation etc. Now finally I have a job. The job is fixing/upgrading an ERP on a daily basis. Creating reports and maybe sometimes new stuff. I have absolutely no experience in Delphi, and no motivation to learn it especially when people are moving to .NEt from Delphi not in the reverse direction sa my manager expects :) The question is that are there any tools that I write C# code and compile into this object pascal or whatever it is. • Video overlay - need advice

  Hi, I'm working on a project and I need some advice. Just some background, Im not a programmer though at times I do some fiddling and I am generally comfortable with more specific terms. Now for the actual issue, I have a folder with 10 small videos (4/7 secs max each) and I would like to display them full screen looping and overlaid. • erroneous Visual C float / double conversion?

  In Visual C++ i wrote the following sample in a C++ program: float f1 = 42.48f; double d1 = 42.48; double d2 = f1; I compiled the program with Visual Studio 2005. In the debugger i see the following values: f1 42.480000 float d1 42.479999999999997 double d2 42.479999542236328 double d1 by my knowledege is OK, but d2 is wrong. The problem occurs as well with /fp=precise as with /fp=strict as with /fp=fast. Whats the problem here? Any hint how to avoid this Problem? This leads to serious numerical problems.

• Documenting a policy based design

  I'm re-working some prototype code into a policy based design in C++, and I'm wondering what the best practice is for documenting the design. My current plan is to document: Policy hierarchy Overview of each policy Description of each type/value/function in each policy I was thinking of putting this into a doxygen module, but this looks like it will be a bit awkward since formatting will have to be done by hand without code to base the doc on (that is, documenting the policies rather than the implementation of the policies). So my questions are: Are there other aspects of the design that should be documented? Are there any tricks to doing this efficiently in doxygen? Is there a tool other than doxygen thats better suited to this? What are some examples of well documented policy based design? This is my first serious attempt at policy based design. I think I have a working grasp of the principles, but whatever naivety I expose in this question is fair game for an answer too.

The fact is that I don't know which are the best tools to produce something serious (I'm talking about web-develop through PHP): Are template engine like Smarty mandatory? Which one is "the best" (the most used, complete, documentated) At the moment I'm developing on Notepad++ (mostly because I find it useful and complete) is there a better development tool? Or is just a matter of personal taste? At the moment I'm studying JQuery and deepening my knowledge as regards CSS what other "mandatory" subjects can you suggest me? • VWD Express won't let me add one table!

  Sorry if this question is too trivial but I really haven't found any related questions and I am shaking too much to think logically. I spent like few hours waiting for SQL Server to finally install (you know, it's Microsoft) and now when I want to add new table to database it says "this feature is not supported by Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express". How could this happen? I mean, what's the point of even letting me use this if I can't even add one table to database, and I won't even know about it until I actually need to do it? Are they really serious or is it just some mistake? Is there any way to get around this problem? I need to create just one simple project with one small table in database but it won't let me, but I can't believe they could actually have nerves to make express edition without such a trivial function, so maybe I just made something wrong and there's actually some way to add this table? Sorry for being so whiny but I'm just fed up with this environment.

• Jquery CPU usage

• Best solution for language documentation.

  I'm developing a new object oriented scripting language and the project itself is quite ready for audience now, so i'm starting to think about a serious (not as "drafty" as it is right now) way of document its grammar, functions from standard library and standard library classes. I've looked a bit around and almost every language hash its own web application for the documentation, Python uses Sphinx for instance. Which is the best PHP (don't have the time/will to install mod_who_knows_what on my server) application to accomplish this? I've used mediawiki a bit but i found its tag system a little bit hard to use in this context. Thanks for your answers.

• How can a large number of developers write software without either a cumbersome process or poor qual

  I work at a company with hundreds of people writing software for essentially the same product. The quality of the software has to be high because so many people depend on it (not least the developers themselves). Because of this every major issue has resulted in a new check - either automated or manual. As a result the process of delivering software is becoming ever more burdensome. So that requires more developers which... well you can see it is a vicious circle. We now have a problem with releasing software quickly - the lead time even to change one line of code for a very serious issue is at least one day. What techniques do you use to speed up the delivery of software in a large organization, while still maintaining software quality?

  I have question to Java or C# programmers. I want to render some pages in various browsers mainly Firefox and IE and save it as a picture. I have not any serious experience in Java/.Net. • What's the best software analogy you've heard?

  Hi Quite frequently I have to explain things to Project Managers who sometimes want to know a little bit more about something, and sometimes I try and come up with some analogy that best explains it. Now, I can't really kick this off with a good analagy because mine usually suck, but I would be interested in yours, or some you've heard that have been used to simplify explanations. One analogy that does come up often is when explaining Interfaces (i.e. .Net) to which I usually explain in terms of a vehicle has a driver interface, and all vehicles must implement that interface so that anyone who can drive a vehicle will be able to utilise it. • MSSQL: Primary Key Schema Largely Guid but Sometimes Integer Types...

  OK, this may be a silly question but... I have inherited a project and am tasked with going over the primary key relationships. The project largely uses Guids. I say "largely" because there are examples where tables use integral types to reflect enumerations. For example, dbo.MessageFolder has MessageFolderId of type int to reflect public emum MessageFolderTypes { inbox = 1, sent = 2, trash = 3, etc... } This happens a lot. There are tables with primary keys of type int which is unavoidable because of their reliance on enumerations and tables with primary keys of type Guid which reflect the primary key choice on the part of the previous programmer. Should I care that the PK schema is spotty like this? It doesn't feel right but does it really matter? If this could create a problem, how do I get around it (I really can't move all PKs to type int without serious legwork and I have never heard of enumerations that have guid values)? Thanks.

Besides that they run late (which is indeed a serious problem for many kinds of resources), they are also less powerful because they can only perform a subset of the operations allowed in a destructor (e.g., a finalizer cannot reliably use other objects, whereas a destructor can), and even when writing in that subset finalizers are extremely difficult to write correctly. And collecting finalizable objects is expensive: Each finalizable object, and the potentially huge graph of objects reachable from it, is promoted to the next GC generation, which makes it more expensive to collect by some large multiple. Does this also apply to JVMs in general and to HotSpot in particular?

• Writing to the middle of the file (without overwriting data)

  In windows is it possible through an API to write to the middle of a file without overwriting any data and without having to rewrite everything after that? If it's possible then I believe it will obviously fragment the file; how many times can I do it before it becomes a serious problem? If it's not possible what approach/workaround is usually taken? Re-writing everything after the insertion point becomes prohibitive really quickly with big (ie, gigabytes) files. Note: I can't avoid having to write to the middle. Think of the application as a text editor for huge files where the user types stuff and then saves. I also can't split the files in several smaller ones.

  I have a series of queries against a very mega large database, and I have hundreds-of-thousands of ORs in WHERE clauses. What is the best and easiest way to optimize such SQL queries? I found some articles about creating temporary tables and using joins, but I am unsure. I'm new to serious SQL, and have been cutting and pasting results from one into the next. • Is EF4 "Code Only" ready for production use?

  I've been looking at the new Entity Framework 4 Code Only features, and I really like them. But I'm having a hard time finding good resource on the feature. Everything seems to be spread around blongs here and there, so this make me wonder if it's ready to be used for a serious project? What do you think? Is it ready for production use or should I use the more traditional approach (EDMX designer, POCO objects)? Also, I would like to know if there are any features that Code Only does not support yet, compared to the EDMX designer? What do you think about the Code Only feature? Is it "mature" yet? Thank you.
