• How to debug and detect hang issue

  I am testing my application (Windows 7, WinForms, Infragistics controls, C#, .Net 3.5). I have two monitors and my application saves and restores forms' position on the first or second monitors. So I physically switched off second monitor and disabled it at Screen Resolution on the windows display settings form. I need to know it is possible for my application to restore windows positions (for those windows that were saved on the second monitor) to the first one. I switched off second monitor and press Detect to apply hardware changes. Then Windows switched OFF the first monitor for a few seconds to apply new settings. When the first monitor screen came back, my application became unresponsive. My application was launched in debug mode, so I tried to navigate via stack and threads (Visual Studio 2008), paused application, started and did not find any thing that help me to understand why my application is not responsive. Could somebody help my how to detect the source of issue.

• Recovering transaction log from corrupt SQL database

  We have a database that is backed up weekly in simple mode. Yesterday, we had a crc error corrupt the mdf file and we were unable to save it. I restored the backup from last week, but now we have a gap from the time of the backup to the time of the restore. Since I have the ldf file from that database, is there any way to "replay" that transaction log to fill in the gap? I have tried reattaching the ldf file to the recovered mdf file, but SQL will not allow me to do that. (It just creates a new ldf file with a different name when I reattach the database.) Any ideas would help. This is a lot of data to lose and although it is not critical data, I'd like to get it back (as well as learn as well as learn how to do it.)

• Where is the default language data stored in OS 10.6

  From a shell in 10.4 or 10.5, I was able to do this: /usr/bin/defaults read NSGlobalDomain AppleLanguages To get the list of the language preference for that particular machine. This was done so that I could restore it back to that list after changing it with the 'defaults write' command to something else (in order to help automate l10n testing). Now, along comes OS 10.6, and AppleLanguages is nowhere in any of our defaults domains. I know that I can alter it for each running application by altering their specific property lists...but at the cost of more complexity. Also, some of the apps I have under test here are installer packages...and It's a real pain to change stuff (like the .plist I'd have to change here) in those without being somewhat destructive; that's why I chose to do it globally in the first place. Anyways, it'd be great if I could find where they stashed it now...or if they deprecated it (like a zillion other things in OS 10.6) completely.

  Hello ,guys, My app needs to get the camera data from Iphone. In my ImagePickerController, there is overlayView drawing realtime indications. I use UIGetScreenImage() to get the screenshot, and I also dump overlayview to image, then I can restore the original Image based on these two images. if the overlayView is still, it works quite well, but if the overlayView keeps changing, UIGetScreenImage() can not keep up with it. For example,if the overlayView changes from a rectangle to a circle, then calling UIGetScreenImage() returns with a rectangle on top of it. Is there a way to get the realtime camera data? I really appreciate if someone could help.

• Problems with sp_addlinkedserver in MSSQL 2000

  Hi! I'm having a bit of a problem with moving specific data from one server running MSSQL 2000 (A) and another running MSSQL 2008 (B). I'm writing a script according to customer specifications which is to be executed on A, populating tables in B with data. However, I can't seem to get the server link to work. -- Bunch of declarations here EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = @ServerName, @srvproduct = @ServerProduct, @provider = @ProviderString, @datasrc = @RemoteHost -- Data migration stuff here EXEC sp_dropserver @ServerName Now if I run the script in its entirety I get an error saying: Msg 7202, Level 11, State 2, Line 55 Could not find server 'remoteServer' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers. However, if I higlight only the sp_addlinkedserver-part and execute that, there is no error and I can highlight the rest of the script and run it. What am I missing here? Please help! PS. If backup-restore was an option, I would have done that already.

  My team is currently using VS2005 with the following development PCs that are a few years old: XP, Pentium D 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM. My gut tells me that this is going to be poor hardware for VS2010 development. I am not running VS2010 beta but I am running Blend 3 beta and the performance is bad. Can you point me to anything that I can show my boss to convince him to buy 6 new machines for my team? Edit below after initial answer from Jon: I should have added that my boss wants to upgrade current machines with new hard-drives so I am trying to use this opportunity to take a look forward and see if a HD upgrade is really worth it. This HD upgrade would not just be simple installation of 2nd drive but would replace current drive and would involve backup/restore or reinstallation headaches. There would be the added benefit of 64bit development too, something that we have been talking about.

  I have an ASP.Net Web site using .Net Membership with a SQL Server provider, so the users and roles are stored in the SQL tables created by Aspnet_regsql.exe. Is this architecture totally self-contained and portable, or are users in it somehow bound to the specific Web site on which they create their account? Put another way, if we create a bunch of users in dev or UAT, the back up and restore this database to another server, accessed under another domain name, should it still work just fine? We're seeing some odd behavior when we move the database, like users losing group affiliation and such, and I'm curious how portable and environment-agnostic this database really is. I have a sneaking suspicion that something is bound to the machine key or the domain.

  I am Netbeans user for PHP. I have installed Netbeans IDE 6.8. Everything is working well. There is an option in SOURCE -- FORMAT. This action formats the code properly. It is quite handy. Unfortunately, this functionality is not working for me. Whenever some php code comes in between, it additionally adding some empty rows in between and making it more untidy. Can you please help to set up the same functionality. Restore the settings to default.

• CLR Function not working in restored database

  So I've restore a database with CLR assemblies in it from one physical server to another. One of the functions in the CLR assembly essentially does an uncompress of some compressed data. When I run this function against data in the restored database it returns the compressed data (rather than the uncompressed data). No error is thrown in SSMS or in the SQL server error logs. At the suggestion of others, I've checked differences in the database ownership (both owned by sa), trustworthiness (both set to not trustworthy). I also checked differences in the .NET framework installs on both machines but found only that the target machine had a 1.1 version installed that the source didn't. I don't know what else to try. • WiX, how to prevent files from uninstalling though we forgot to set Permanent="yes"

  We have a product installer created with Wix, containing a program package ("V1") and some configuration files. Now, we are going to make a major upgrade with a new product code, where the old version of the product is uninstalled and "V2" is installed. What we want is to save one of the configuration files from uninstalling, since it is needed for the V2, too. Unfortunately, we forgot to set the Permanent="yes" option when we delivered V1 (read this question for more information). Here comes the question: is there an easy way of preventing the uninstall of the file anyhow? Of course, we could add a custom action to the script to backup the file before uninstallation, and another custom action to restore it afterwards, but IMHO that seems to be overkill for this task, and might interfere with other parts of the MSI registration process.

  Whenever someone asks what to do with code that is no longer needed the answer is usually "delete it, restore it from source control if you need it back". Now how do I find that piece of source code in the repository? Let's limit scope to SVN for simplicity - I suspect that using any other source control system will not make much difference in this aspect (correct me if I'm wrong). If I delete that code and commit the changes it will no longer be in the latest revision. How do I find it without exporting each revision and searching thoroughly (which is nearly impossible)?

  Our application includes a default set of data. The default data includes coefficients and other factors that are unlikely to ever change but still need to be update-able by the user. Currently, the original default data is stored as a populated class within the application. Data updates are stored to an external XML file. This design allows us to include a "reset" feature to restore the original default data. Our rationale for not storing defaults externally [e.g. XML file] was to minimize the risk of being altered. The overall volume of data doesn't warrant a database. Is there a standard practice for storing "default" application data?

  I just went through the whole certificate/keychain/provisioning/appID/profile/DNA test process to get my app running on my iPhone. Turns out my iPhone OS was out of date (3.0.1 I think), so I updated it. Now it says The version of iPhone OS on “Stefanie's phone” does not match any of the versions of iPhone OS supported for development with this copy of Xcode. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below. If necessary, the latest version of Xcode is available here. OS Installed on Stefanie's phone 3.1.3 (7E18) Xcode Supported iPhone OS Versions 3.1.2 (7D11) 3.1.1 (7C146) 3.1.1 (7C145) 3.1 (7C144) 3.0.1 (7A400) 3.0 2.2.1 2.2 2.1.1 2.1 2.0.2 (5C1) 2.0.1 (5B108) 2.0 (5A347) But I have Xcode 3.2.1, which is supposed to support iPhone OS 3.1.3. • Restoring Sharepoint content database

  Hi, My WSS_Content database had got corrupt. And my pc was infected by virus. I had no backup of my WSS_Content database. So, I copied the corrupt database to a separete disk, formatted and reinstalled Sharepoint, with SQL Server 2005 as before (I'm using sharepoint 2007 ). I used Sytools Sharepoint Recovery tool, that i found on the net, which helped me restore my corrupt WSS_Content database. Now i want to set this content database as my "The content database" for my newly installed sharepoint.   As per the documentation link given below: When a lock wait timeout occurs, the current statement is not executed. The current transaction is not rolled back. (Until MySQL 5.0.13 InnoDB rolled back the entire transaction if a lock wait timeout happened. You can restore this behavior by starting the server with the --innodb_rollback_on_timeout option, available as of MySQL 5.0.32. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/innodb-parameters.html#sysvar_innodb_lock_wait_timeout Does it mean that when a lock wait timeout occurs, it compromises the transactional integrity? "roollback on timeout" was the default behaviour till 5.0.13 and I guess that was the correct way to handle such situations. Does anyone think that this should be the default behaviour and the user should not be asked to add a parameter for a functionality that is taken for granted?

  Hi, I am planning on starting my 1st VSTO project. What I want to be able to do is: Download and Upload versions of a MS Word document to a web service. With authentication by overriding the save button Call a web service to list a bunch of tag that can be inserted into a document. When a user double clicks a tag the selected tag is inserted into the cursor position. I am pretty sure this is all possible just want some confirmation? Also would like to know how long would it take to make something like this. I think the biggest issue will be authentication and listing exiting files to download then allowing the user to download a .doc and restore previous versions of that file via the web service.

  Hello I have a server with live databases, and I have a test-server where I sometimes restore databases from the live one, to get fresh data. But this way I have to set up all the users again, I have about 4 different users with different permissions that need set again. Is there some way to do this a better way without using detach and attach, since I cant take the databases offline on the live-server? Prefered some thing I could run that "re-fills" the tables with fresh data. No need to redo stored procedures and rights. /M

  I've been playing around with the windows clipboard. I noticed that you can only view the clipboard if you supply a format. I've seen programs that can dump the raw contents of the clipboard. Look at http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/misc/Clipboard.htm#ClipboardAll for an example of what I mean. Is there a way to do something similar, what I want to do is be able to back up the clipboard, manipulate it, then restore it when my program is done.
