• Problem with running a program from flashdrive

  I have a USB drive with two partitions in it, one hidden and one normal. I have an application which swaps the memory and runs the flash application in hidden zone. The problem is that the application works fine on Windows 7 and when run on Win XP, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when I copy the application to desktop and run, it runs with no glitch. I was facing the same problem on Win 7 too, but it was running as required when I ran it using "Run in XP mode" and then I applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. The application is built using VC++ 2008. does anyone know the solution?

• My pendrive is not working and showing Unknown file System

  I have a pendrive when I insert it into one o my port it shows in the My Computer but when I try to explore, it shows please insert a disk into drive H. However my usb drive is well inserted. I tried to format it but it is showing There is no disk in drive H, Insert a disk then try again. Its properties is showing Unknown File System and the used space and free space part showing 0 bytes. I cann't also check for errors in the drive. Its device status:The device is working properly. I also reinstalled the driver but that did not help me. Please suggest some way to recover the issue. • Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2.0 not working, but paired Wireless Mouse 5000 on same receiver does?

  I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2.0 that was bought paired with a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000. They're both Bluetooth and use the same receiver. The keyboard no longer works. The receiver is fine, as the mouse still works. The keyboard is still detected by Windows when the receiver is plugged in. The batteries have been replaced. There are no on/off switches on the keyboard or mouse, and no re-sync button on them or the receiver. Results are the same when using the receiver in a different USB port, or on a different machine. Anything else I might try to fix this, or should I hold a funeral for the keyboard?

• Prevent Windows 7 from unpluging External HDD [migrated]

  I have installed Windows 7 as my media server. I pluged in 500GB external HDD via USB. I have changed power plan to Best Performance and changed advenced power settings to never turn off HDD etc. I even yesterday wrote powershell script (create and delete folder on this disk) and I have added it to harmonogram to run every 5 minutes starting from system boot. And nothing! Disk after some time (I realy can't say when) is turning off and Windows show "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Then only system reboot or disk reboot helps. Any ideas how to prevent Windows 7 from stopping my external HDD? Cheers!

• Is it possible to re-create the Windows 8.1 install image after the upgrade

  I have downloaded and installed the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the Windows store. The hardware was a 64-bit Toshiba P50 laptop. I need to upgrade a second P50 and wish to do so without another 3.6Gb download (I tried the instructions here but never got the chance to create the installation media, nor was I asked for a product key). I saw mention on superuser of creating USB rescue media after installation and using that to clone the upgrade onto another machine. Is this likely to be a viable option?

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   I have the Windows 8 32-bit ISO which fails to install when booted from a USB flash drive. It copies the files, the boot loader installs, but the install hangs when I boot into Windows 8 for the first time--it simply keeps on spinning forever. The Windows 8 Release Preview does not work either. I did a VHD install of Windows 8 Developer Preview and it installed fine. Looking at the partition from Windows 7, I can see that the files are present. What could be the problem?

• Use 2 wireless adapters to connect to 2 WIFI networks (local and internet) simultaneously?

  On my HP Compaq 6710b there's an internal WIFI network adapter. Attached to the same laptop there's also an external USB Alfa WIFI adapter. I live near campus and can pick it's WIFI signal. The problem is that when I am connected to the Internet Wifi using the internal adapter, and then connect to the home (non-internet) Wifi network's router, I lose the connection to the internet (it stays connected, but there's no actual connection). So how can I use the two adapters to connect to both networks successfully ? The router is Belkin N150 Enhanced Router Model F6D4230-4 V1 The external adapter is: ALFA AWUS 036NHR

• How do I listen to my microphone through my speakers in Windows 7?

  I've looked about and before you say it: I've used the "Listen to this device" feature built into Windows. The issue is that it is a USB microphone and there is a second delay before when it plays on the speakers, literally making me go quiet because my brain doesn't work too well hearing myself a second after I say something. I use Realtek Audio, so it works differently from the monopolistic Creative sound cards. There is no "What U Hear" or "Line In" levels. It's just "Speakers" and "Microphone". Is there a software I can use that will not have delay? I want to wear nice headphones and still hear myself

• Readyboost on Windows 7 x64

  I'm thinking of bying 1 or more flash drives or an SD card to use with the readyboost function on by 64bit Windows 7 machine. I have a few questions regarding it before i put my hand in my pocket and buy anything. If i go ahead I would be using the fastest available flash/SD. I have 6GB of RAM current installed so will readyboost make any difference to boot / program load times? Will 2 x 2GB flash drives be quicker than 1 x 4GB or is the limitation on the motherboard? • How can I make windows not mount a drive when it is plugged in?

  Due to my employer's IT policy, I'm not allowed to have any kind of MP3 playing software on my computer. I do however like to plug my iPod into my computer to keep the battery charged during working hours. Normally, I plug the iPod in, Windows mounts the drive, then I have to go in and eject the drive so I can run my iPod normally while still keeping it charged. Is there anyway I can keep Windows from mounting the drive (and this drive only, I still use my USB flash drive a lot) from auto-mounting? Update: Maybe this is more of an iPod issue, but specifically I would like for the iPod to not display the "Do not disconnect" message when plugged in.

  I would like to run ubuntu on my external hard drive. I have got virtual box installed in the external hard drive and made a machine named ubuntu and installed the latest ubuntu version which i got from the .iso download. Now after much juggling around i got ubuntu running on the machine which i did the whole installation. When i move it to another machine the virtual box just woudnt open.   Any one in here who has experienced this problem. The taskbar hangs whenever I: - Open a folder from a browser - Open a usb flash drive - Open a drive on my computer It really sucks, but the solution to the taskbar hangs because of opening flash drive is to remove the flash drive. Which is not safe because the file system of my flash drive is ntfs. And I can't just safely remove it because the taskbar doesnt respond when I click it. Do you know any solutions to this? Other than disabling the automatically search for printer in the folder options.

• System restore with no mouse or keyboard.

  I accidentally installed some USB drivers to my Windows 7 system, they were the wrong ones and now my keyboard and mouse won't work. A system restore would get rid of them, but obviously I can't control my computer to make that happen. Keyboard and mouse still work before windows has loaded, in the BIOS and boot system, so can I do anything from there? I've already tried booting into another OS, accessing my windows filesystem and deleting the Program Files entry, but it didnt work so they must go deeper than that. Or could i launch it from a remote machine? I've got some VNC server insalled so if i could get that running that could work.

• Logitech webcam device only recognised by one software, without drivers

  A couple weeks ago I purchased a Logitech webcam at a garage sale; It did not come with any driver DVDs or anything like that. I plugged it in, turned on my computer, and continued work as usual. I did not at the time (and still have not) gotten any drivers for the device. Recently, though, I started up an audio software named as Cubase, only to find that it was picking up audio reads off of... something. I checked my sound card, and everything else plugged into my computer, but couldn't find where in the world this audio was being picked up from. There were no microphones listed in the device managers, and no "unknown devices" or whatever. Everything seemed as it always was. Running out of ideas, i blew an air-horn directly into the general area of the webcam, located directly in front of me. Sure enough, the audio peaked, indicating that the microphone was definitely in the webcam and that Cubase was somehow picking up this audio, even without drivers. The software lists the device as a "Universal USB Microphone". Adobe Audition, Soundbooth, and other audio applications cannot find the device either. Why is it that this one software (Cubase) can use this device without a driver, while every other piece of software on the computer can't? Not even the operating system can recognize it. • Windows 7 Not Recognizing Camera Nor iPhone as Camera

  I've been struggling with this one for a few days. I've recently upgraded an older computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. Neither my digital camera (A Canon SD1200IS) nor iPhone are ever detected as cameras, nor ever show up as accessable in Explorer. With the Canon camera, no driver is required. It's supposed to work with the default Windows 7 drivers. However, in the Control Panel's Device Manager, I'm always seeing a yellow icon next to the "Canon Digital Camera" device. I've uninstalled the device and let Windows attempt to reinstall, but it can never find a driver to install. With the iPhone, it's very similar. One big difference, though, is that iTunes can see the iPhone and back it up, etc. However, again when I go to the Device Manager, there's a yellow icon next to the iPhone. I've uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled, rebooted, deleted drivers, and let Window try to reinstall the driver, but it can never find the driver. So there seems to be some correlation that my machine can't detect cameras properly, and that it might be even a lower-level type of driver I'm struggling with. I know that USB however, does work, because I have have an external drive hooked into the machine. I've gone through the web and tried two hours worth of fixes, without success. I feel like if I can get the Canon camera detected, then the iPhone will be on it's way to being fixed too. BTW, I couldn't really find anything of use in the Event viewer. Any and all suggestions welcome.

• Closing laptop lid and using external display causes mouse to move on it's own

  I plugged my ASUS Taichi Laptop into an external monitor via the VGA Adapter that it comes with. It was working fine, but then I configured a power option so I could shut the lid without it going to sleep (so I could use just the external monitor with an external keyboard/mouse). Problem is though, now, when the lid is closed and I move the mouse, the mouse is moving around on it's own, but when I open the laptop lid back up, the mouse is fine. I looked under the lid when it was closed and the display properly shuts off on the laptop. It's not the external mouse/keyboard because I completely unplugged them and it was still happening. Nobody is hacking me or anything, I totally went into airplane mode/pulled the wire. I have a touchscreen, but I put a piece of paper over it and it wasn't doing it. I was thinking it might be the trackpad being touched somehow by the screen when the lid is closed? But I went into windows 8 control panel options and I couldn't find anywhere to disable it (it sees the USB mouse I think).

  I'm trying to image a SATA laptop hard drive, using DriveImageXML, that is attached to my computer via a USB adapter. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. DriveXML is returning: Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). ERROR C:\Program Files (x86)\Runtime Software\Drivelmage XML\vss64.exe failed to start. ERROR TIMEOUT Make sure VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. Click Help for more information. VSSVC.EXE is running in Task Manager, as is VSS64.exe. Looking at the FAQ on the Runtime webpage this turned up: Please verify in Settings-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services that the following services are enabled: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Volume Shadow Copy Also make sure you are able to stop and start these services. Possible reasons for VSS failures: For VSS to work, at least one volume in your computer must be NTFS. If you use only FAT drives, VSS will not function. The required NTFS volume does not need to be identical with the volume you want to image. You should make sure that VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. If the problems persist, registering "oleaut.dll" and "oleaut32.dll" using "regsvr32" might help. Both of those services are running and can be started and stopped without issue. Using "regsvr32" to register ""oleaut32.dll" returns successful, but "oleaut.dll" returns: The module "oleaut.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Some other information that might be relevant. Browsing to the drive is successful, but accessing certain folders returns an "access" error. Windows runs a permissions adder that adds the current user profile to the NFTS permissions. Could this be the cause of the issue? DriveImage XML is running as Administrator. Thoughts?

• Dell Dimension 8400 Startup error

  Hello all, thanks first for taking the time to read this and possibly help me...... now I am pretty decent of a computer tech...but not enough. I am having an issue with my computer which is running windows xp and as I mentioned it is a dell Dimension 8400. as soon as I power the system up the fan goes into hyper drive (spins like crazy and is very loud) then the start up screen with dell comes up and the loading bar gets stuck on the process of "Bios Revision A00" and never loads beyound that. I have read alot about it and think that the main problem was that it can not locate the file (which does have an updated version) I think it is A09. I can not enter safe mode, Bios mode or anything. I do have the file on my other computer and I was wondering if there is a way that I can use a usb flash drive (as I have read on other sites) to create a bootable MS-Dos diskette but I am failing at creating as such....is this possible? or is there anything else I can do? I tried to remove the battery from the system for about 10 minutes while it was completely unplug and tried then to reboot it and go into the bios menu but the same thing keeps happening....can anyone help me :-(

• No power save on external hard drive - How to implement?

  I recently bought a new 3.5" USB external hard drive which I thought had a power save feature on it, but it turns out that it doesn't. So whether it's being used or not, it spins, which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't so loud and didn't get really really hot. After doing some research, it seems like what controls this is the enclosure of the hard drive and not the drive itself or the OS (although I suspect that's not entirely true). I attempted to use the "hdparm" utility but it couldn't identify my externals. Just to be clear, I'm defining power save as a hard drive spinning down after a certain time period of not being used (read from/written to). Also, I have other externals that do this, so it's not a problem from my computer. Here's my question: Is there a way to implement a power save-like feature on my hard drive through software, OS settings, or anything else? Here's some details: Running: Windows XP Home SP2 HD Model: Cavalry CAUM-B-OTB 2TB (although the website only lists 1TB max) Inside: Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 (HDS722020ALA330) (I would link, but new users can only post 1) Thanks in advance.
