  How to use jasper reports to print something only on the first page. I am using jasper reports for printing invoices and only on the 1st page I need to print the Remit Payment To section with the address following it. Customer address is also present there. The way it is currently designed is that this goes into pageFooter section and we use printWhenExpression(PAGE_NUMBER = 1) so that this only gets printed on the 1st page of the invoice. But the downside of this approach is that the jasper engine reserves the size equivalent of the page footer on all the other pages (1..n) of the invoice. So we are able to use only about 2/3 rd of all pages. Remaining 1/3rd page which is for page footer is blank for all pages except the 1st page. This increases the number of pages. Any ideas for fixing this issue?

  I'm re-writing an MXML item renderer in pure AS. A problem I can't seem to get past is how to have each item renderer react to a change on a static property on the item renderer class. In the MXML version, I have the following binding set up on the item renderer: instanceProperty={callInstanceFunction(ItemRenderer.staticProperty)} What would be the equivalent way of setting this up in AS (using BindingUtils, I assume)? UPDATE: So I thought the following wasn't working, but it appears as if Flex is suppressing errors thrown in the instanceFunction, making it appear as if the binding itself is bad. BindingUtils.bindSetter(instanceFunction, ItemRenderer, "staticProperty"); However, when instanceFunction is called, already initialized variables on the given instance are all null, which was the cause of the errors referenced above. Any ideas why this is?

• FFmpeg on iPhone

  Hello, I have downloaded ffmpeg libraries for iPhone and compiled them. My objective is to create a movie file from a series of images using ffmpeg libraries.The amount of documentation for ffmpeg on iphone is very less. I checked an app called iFrameExtractor, which does the opposite of what i want, it extracts frames from a video. On the command line there is a command called ffmpeg -f image2 -i image%d.jpg video.mov This turns a series of images into a video. I actually checked it on my mac and it works fine. What i wanted to know was how do we get the equivalent in iPhone. Or rather which class/api or method to call. There are a couple of examples of apps doing this on iPhone. • Critiquing my first Python script

  A little bit of background: I'm building an inverted index for a search engine. I was originally using PHP, but because of the amount of times I needed to write to disk, I wanted to make a threaded indexer. There's a problem with that because PHP is not thread safe. I then tried Java, but I ended up with at least 20 try catch blocks because of the JSON data structure I was using and working with files. The code was just too big and ugly. Then I figured I should pick up some Python because it's flexible like PHP but also thread safe. Though I'm open to all criticism, what I'd like to learn is the shortcuts that the Python language/library provides that I skipped over. • REST doesn't work with Sever-Client-Client setup

  I am having a problem with my current RESTful api design. What I have is a REST api which is consumed by Django web-server, which renders the HTML templates. REST api > Django webserver > HTML The problem I am encountering is that I have to reconstruct all the URLS like mysite.com/main/cities/<id>/streets/ into equivalent rest api urls on my web-server layer: api.com/cities/<id>/streets/ Thus I have a lot of mapping back and forth, but as far as I know REST says that the client (in this case my web-server) should NOT need to know how to re-construct the urls. Can REST be used for such a setup and how? Or is it only viable for Server-Client architecture. Thanks

• Can grep be used on a Perl variable?

  Is it possible one way or another to, within a Perl script, effectively execute grep against a Perl variable? An equivalent Perl function would be equally acceptable, I just want to keep the solution as simple as possible. For example: #!/usr/bin/perl #!/bin/grep $var="foobar"; $newvar="system('grep -o "foo" $var'); sprintf $newvar; Where I expect sprintf $newvar to output foo. Would also welcome any feedback on best practice here. I am not extremely familiar with Perl.

• Generate fixed length hash in python for url parameter

  I am working in python on appengine. I am trying to create what is equivalent to the "v" value in the youtube url's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhMN0wlITLk) for retrieving specific entities. The datastore auto generates a key but it is way too long (34 digits). I have experimented with hashlib to build my own, but again I get a long string. I would like to keep it to under 11 digits (I am not dealing with a huge number of entities) and letters and numbers are acceptable. It seems like there should be a pretty standard solution. I am probably just missing it.

• Opposite of Bloom filter?

  Hi, I'm trying to optimize a piece of software which is basically running millions of tests. These tests are generated in such a way that there can be some repetitions. Of course, I don't want to spend time running tests which I already ran if I can avoid it efficiently. So, I'm thinking about using a Bloom filter to store the tests which have been already ran. However, the Bloom filter errs on the unsafe side for me. It gives false positives. That is, it may report that I've ran a test which I haven't. Although this could be acceptable in the scenario I'm working on, I was wondering if there's an equivalent to a Bloom filter, but erring on the opposite side, that is, only giving false negatives. I've skimmed through the literature without any luck.

  I am looking for the equivalent of svn cat in git. Yes, I am aware that the similar question was asked here. The answer is to use git show rev:path. However, svn cat can be used for the remote repository. That is, I can do svn cat url@rev and get the file from the specified revision of the remote repository, without getting the whole repository. My understanding is that git show only applies to the local repository. A workaround I found is to use gitweb interface to get the blob.

  In a brand new ASP.NET MVC2 project, I want the user to be redirected to http://<mysite>/home/index rather than http://<mysite>/ We do this with our other sites for tracking purposes, to avoid the scenario where hits to the same default page show up as http://<mysite>/ http://<mysite>/default.aspx How do I accomplish this so that http://<mysite>/ automatically redirects to whatever default controller/action I have set up in my routing? Please note that I am aware the two are functionally equivalent, as the default controller action will be executed either way. I'm just interested in forcing consistent URLs in the browser.

• IPv6 parsing in C

  I wanted to know how i can parse an IPv6 address in 'C' and convert it to a 128 bit value? So a hex address like 1:22:333:aaaa:b:c:d:e:f needs to be converted to its 128 bit equivalent binary. The problem is the IP address could be of the type ::2 and its variant since they are valid IPv6 address. The input is from the keyboard and hence is in ASCII format. I want to obtain records from B including C but filtering from A's Id.   The twitter API allows me to receive daily trends and weekly trends (in addition to current trends, of course) as either JSON or XML. Is there an equivalent with the whatthetrend.com API? I don't see a method/parameter at first glance but I wanted to see if anyone out there knew a way... http://api.whatthetrend.com/api There's a method to lookup trend definition by keyword so I guess I could use that based off the Twitter API but I'd rather just load all the data at once rather than have to remotely access the API every time I want to look up a definition. • How do you measure latency in low-latency environments?

  Here's the setup... Your system is receiving a stream of data that contains discrete messages (usually between 32-128 bytes per message). As part of your processing pipeline, each message passes through two physically separate applications which exchange the data using a low-latency approach (such as messaging over UDP) or RDMA and finally to a client via the same mechanism. Assuming you can inject yourself at any level, including wire protocol analysis, what tools and/or techniques would you use to measure the latency of your system. As part of this, I'm assuming that every message that is delivered to the system results in a corresponding (though not equivalent) message being pushed through the system and delivered to the client. The only tool that I've seen on the market like this is TS-Associates TipOff. I'm sure that with the right access you could probably measure the same information using a wire analysis tool (ala wireshark) and the right dissectors, but is this the right approach or are there any commodity solutions that I can use?

I am definitely in new territory here, so am sure there are more issues to arise, but right now, I am trying to get Firefox to give me the same result as IE. In IE, I can access the HTML code of the selection by using the (apparently IE-only) htmlText property of the object returned by createRange(). What I am looking for is the Firefox equivalent to that (or a function that I can use to give me the same result). Anyone know how to do this?

If I run DBCC TRACEOFF(253), query plans are cached as normal. So my question is...what else does this flag do? Does anybody know the official story?

  I recently read (and unfortunately forgot where), that the best way to write operator= is like this: foo &operator=(foo other) { swap(*this, other); return *this; } instead of this: foo &operator=(const foo &other) { foo copy(other); swap(*this, copy); return *this; } The idea is that if operator= is called with an rvalue, the first version can optimize away construction of a copy. So when called with a rvalue, the first version is faster and when called with an lvalue the two are equivalent. I'm curious as to what other people think about this? Would people avoid the first version because of lack of explicitness? Am I correct that the first version can be better and can never be worse?

• Any ideas on how to implement a 'touchMoveOver' event in Javascript?

  I'm faffing around with SVG, specifically for web content aimed at iPad users. I've created a little dial type thingy that I'm calling a "cheese board" that I'd like to use as an interface element. http://appliedworks.co.uk/files/times/SVGTests/raphael.html Clicking on a piece of cheese (to keep the analogy going) will do "something". That bit's easy. However, I'd like the user to be able to drag their finger around the 'cheese board', firing a new event (touchesMovedOver?) every time they their finger moves over a new piece of cheese. But I can't figure out how to do it since there's no 'mouseOver' equivalent for touch interfaces. If the whole thing was made of squares, I could have created some sort of 'rectContainsPoint' method to be called for every 'touchesMoved', but that approach wouldn't work here. If anyone has any idea about how something like this could be achieved, I'd love to hear it.

• How to view Mercurial changeset changes using a GUI diff tool

  We use both Examdiff and Kdiff3 to view Mercurial changes. Just add this to .hgrc: [extdiff] cmd.kdiff3 = cmd.examdiff = C:\Program Files\ExamDiff Pro\ExamDiff.exe And then you can type hg examdiff or hg diff3 to see a complete diff of all your changes. What I would like is to do the same to see a "before and after" of files for a given changeset that was checked in by someone else. I know you can type hg log to see all changesets and then hg log -vprXX to see a text diff, but that's too hard for my GUI preferring eyes. Anyone know how to the equivalent with the GUI tools?
