• JavaScript socket vs. Flash socket?

  Steve Jobs just posted this article on why Apple rejects Flash... http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ I agree that javascript and css can be used to replicate some of Flash's animation, though Flash does all sorts of scaling and tweening that is incredibly powerful, and I'm not sure that there's anything comparable in javascript, if there is, I certainly haven't seen it. However, my question is about the socket. Flash has an incredibly powerful openSocket class that allows you to connect to a server and have the server and the client talk back and forth to one another. As far as I know there is no equivalent class in Javascript. Am I mistaken? Is there some secret mystery Ajax class that replicates the openSocket? If not, then that feature alone makes Flash an invaluable tool. I'm interested in all answers though... and yes this IS a programming question! :)

• Xcode Tips for Eclipse users?

  Hi, I've been slowly working my way through the examples in Beginning iPhone Development and there are a few things that I have not been able to figure out, but I'm sure you guys can help me with it. In Eclipse there is a Source-Generate Getters/Setters, can you do something similar to synthesize properties in Xcode I also cannot seem to find a Refactor menu I'm also struggling to find the equivalent to Source-Override/Implement Methods --Edit-- I failed to describe my problem it seems. I do know that synthesizing properties will generate getters/setters for me, but I am looking for a way to generate the @property/@synthesize code, by selecting the variables. Short list to start with, but I will probably have more as my confusion grows in might. :)

• How can I save the schema of a SQL Database to a file?

  I'm writing a software application in C#.Net that connects to a SQL Server database. My C# project is under SVN version control, but I'd like to include my database schema in the SVN repository as well. An answer to a previous question of mine suggested storing the scripts to generate the database in version control. Is there a way to automatically generate these scripts from an existing database? I'm very new to SQL Server, but I noticed in management studio that the SQL commands to create a table can be generated automatically by right clicking on the table and clicking "Script Table As". Is there an equivalent command that would work with the entire database?

• What interprocess locking calls should I monitor?

  I'm monitoring a process with strace/ltrace in the hope to find and intercept a call that checks, and potentially activates some kind of globally shared lock. While I've dealt with and read about several forms of interprocess locking on Linux before, I'm drawing a blank on what to calls to look for. Currently my only suspect is futex() which comes up very early on in the process' execution. Update0 There is some confusion about what I'm after. I'm monitoring an existing process for calls to persistent interprocess memory or equivalent. I'd like to know what system and library calls to look for. I have no intention call these myself, so naturally futex() will come up, I'm sure many libraries will implement their locking calls in terms of this, etc. Update1 I'd like a list of function names or a link to documentation, that I should monitor at the ltrace and strace levels (and specifying which). Any other good advice about how to track and locate the global lock in mind would be great.

  I use a Javascript hash object to store a set of numerical counters, set up like this [this is greatly simplified]: var myHash = { A: 0, B: 0, C: 0 }; Is there a way to make other keys, ones not explicitly in myHash, map to keys that are? For instance, I'd like [again, this is simplified]: myHash['A_prime']++; // or myHash.A_prime++; to be exactly equivalent to myHash['A']++; // or myHash.A++; e.g. incrementing the value found at the key A, not A_prime.

  I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to GIS, but I think I understand the basics - it doesn't seem to hard. But: All these acronyms and different libraries, GEOS, GDAL, PROJ, PCL, Shaply, OpenGEO, OGR, OGC, OWS and what not, each seemingly depending on any number of others, is slightly overwhelming me. Here's what I would like to do: Given a number of points and a linestring, I want to determine the location on the line closest to a certain point. Supposed that you form a low-pass spatial filter h(x,y) that averages all the eight immediate neighbors of a pixel (x,y) but excludes itself. a. Find the equivalent frequency domain filter H(u,v): My answer is to (a): 1/8*H(u-1, v-1) + 1/8*H(u-1, v) + 1/8*H(u-1, v+1) + 1/8*H(u, v-1) + 0 + 1/8*H(u, v+1) + 1/8*H(u+1, v-1) + 1/8*H(u+1, v) + 1/8*H(u-1, v-1) is this the frequency domain? b. Show that your result is again a low-pass filter. does this have to do with the coefficients being positive?

• Android: scaling a button with a background image.

  I'm probably just being daft but my Google searches are not working out well. I have a bunch of buttons i add in code that all have dynamic text. I've set a background image for each of these buttons since the default greybutton doesn't work well for my application. This works perfectly and when the text size (or content) changes, the button automatically grows to accommodate the expanded text. What doesn't work is that I'd like the button to scale proportionally - i.e. if the background image is round, i'd like it to stay round rather than oval as the button gets bigger. With an imagebutton, there is a property "Adjust view bounds" that does exactly this but I cant put text on an imagebutton. Is there something equivalent for a regular button? or am I going about this wrong? i also tried setting the width of the button in code, but I can't seem to determine the new height (button.getHeight() returns 0)

• How do I layout a form in WPF using grid or other controls for maintainability

  I have a WPF form, I want to lay out a standard form onto it. Each form element will have a label, and then a control. Pretty standard stuff. If I use a wrap panel, it can cause the label and the control to be separated, but I want them to stay together. is there some WPF equivalent of nobr? Grid works, and allows for column spanning etc, however I really really hate that you specify the column and row on each control. This makes it extremely inconvenient to reorder or insert things into the list. Is there a way to get the grid to use more HTML style column/rows where the items are a child of the row they are in, so that I can re-order easily? Is there some other control that will let me layout a form easily?

  Is there a way to query the creation date of a table in SQLite? I am new to SQL, overall. I just found this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1171019/sql-server-table-creation-date-query. I am assuming that sqlite_master is the equivalent to sys.tables in SQLite. Is that correct? But then my sqlite_master table only has the columns "type", "name", "tbl_name", "rootpage" and "sql". If this is not possible in SQLite, what would be the best way to implement this functionality by myself?

I have narrowed it all down to the fact that my signature-generation code has an error of some sort; what it is I have no idea.   In C, I have format strings, something like: char *msg = "wlll you marry me" fprintf(stderr, "%s, %s?", name, msg); Now, can I do something similar in lua with format strings? I.e. I want something functionally equivalent to: name .. ", " .. msg .. "?" but not so ugly, in lua. Okay, so I can do string.format("%s, %s?", name, msg), but can I go even a step further, something like perl style, where I can go: "%name, %msg?" Thanks!

  hello. I know I can do this y[i] += f(x[i]) using transform with two input iterators. however it seems somewhat counterintuitive and more complicated than for loop. Is there a more natural way to do so using existing algorithm in boost or Stl. I could not find clean equivalent. here is transform (y = y + a*x): using boost::lambda; transform(y.begin(), y.end(), x.begin(), y.begin(), (_1 + scale*_2); // I thought something may exist: transform2(x.begin(), x.end(), y.begin(), (_2 + scale*_1); // it does not, so no biggie. • Why shouldn't I use Flash?

  I heard many times i should avoid flash for my website. Yet no one has told me a good reason. I searched for reasons and i see many that are not true (such as text in flash are not indexable by search engines) or may not necessarily be true or significant enough (eating more bandwidth. Would a JS equivalent be bigger or smaller?). My site uses flash to playback sound (m4a). I dont have to worry about indexing, the back button not working, etc. But i have feeling there may be other reasons. What are reasons i shouldnt use flash on my website. I'll note one, the fact iphone/itouch and mobile devices does not support it. Not a big deal for most sites and is obvious. What are reason to avoid flash on my site?

  If I want to know if an object has a particular property I can code this: if (SomeObject.hasOwnProperty('xyz')) { // some code } But some styles masquerade as properties at design time such as Button.color... How can I know what style properties are valid at runtime? ie: What is the equivalent of hasOwnProperty for getStyle/setStyle? In other words how can I know if an object HAS A particular style variable... When I write: MyButton.setStyle('qsfgaeWT','-33'); It won't accomplish anything, but it also doesn't error. How can I know programmatically that 'qsfgaeWT' is NOT a valid style of 'Button'??

  I'm moving a WordPress blog from Apache to IIS. It's just for a couple weeks until I get it changed out. But all I can get to is the homepage. Everything else throws errors.   I am building a framework that will validate forms both client-side (javascript) and server-side based on a form requirements specification written in json. The purpose is to get rid of logically equivalent code on the server and client to make the code more maintainable, faster to write, and less buggy.   say i found a good open source software/library written in python. i want to wrap some of the functions or methods that i have created into easy to understand language of my own. do porter_stemm(DOC) (the DSL) would be equivalent to the function or series of methods written in python. i want to create a DSL that is easy to learn, but need this DSL translated into the original open source software software. im not sure if i am clear here but my intention is: create an easy to learn code language that users can use to solve a problem in a certain niche. this simple language needs to be translated or compiled or interpretated via some middleware into the original open source software's language (python).

• How can I add styles to dynamically added table cells?

  In my program I have a table that, when loaded, has jQuery add some styles/classes to the table cells and table headers. Everything works fine until rows are added via functionality on the rest of the page. Instead of adding the classes to the table cell during addition, is it possible to "listen" or fire some event that checks to see if child elements were added to the table. Essentially, I want something functionally equivalent to this: $("#table td").live("ready", function(){ // do something }); but the live/ready won't work on a table cell... Any ideas?
