• Beginner help with compiling a driver into the kernel so my ethernet works

  I have a Acer Aspire Revo nettop and it seems like it's a common error that Ubuntu doesn't have a driver for the ethernet. Someone recommend following the steps on this page. http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/jaunty/man4/nfe.4freebsd.html The only problem is that I have no clue what to do really. I'm almost like an absolute beginner with linux and was hoping to play with it by doing some apache+php+mysql stuff, however I cannot at the moment. Where is the kernel configuration file? and where is the loader.conf file?

• PHP or RoR... Which is simpler?

  I'd like a server side scripting language for the web either php or ror: to do some dirty simple data fetching and eventually handing it off to my ajax app. I usually use php for this but I keep hearing the ror buzz word. I'm wondering for those who have used both, which is ultimately simpler to get something quick and dirty running? I'm a bit turned off to RoR as it seems to have many files (it's more of a framework), whereas php can potentially just be one file and that's it. But maybe I'm wrong, can you clue me in?

• Launchpad fails to build a package for my PPA

  I'm trying to build a package on Launchpad's Debian build system for PPAs but I'm having some issues with a certain package. The package I'm trying to build (zorin-xwinwrap) contains a source C file which I'm trying to get to compile and build on Launchpad's server so that it would install and work on 32 bit (i386) and 64 bit (amd64) systems. Unfortunately I keep on getting an Error code 2 with the debian/rules file and I have no clue how to fix this issue. • How to add a daemon to a quickly project

  Currently I'm developing an application with quickly which is divided in two parts: A graphical UI where the user could configure some things, and a daemon which do the most work in the background. I started with the UI, to create some windows for settings and so on. Now I want to start coding the daemon, but I have no clue how to implement the daemon in my quickly project. Could I simply paste the files of the daemon in project folder or is there an implementation method for adding new files to a quickly project? Or do I have to create a new project and merge them together?

• Alt/Shift key not released after switching keyboard layout

  Sometimes when I switch layout using either Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift the Alt key is not recognized as being released thus if I press e.g. F a File menu opens up. Last time that happend I lost all data I filled into a text form on a webpage because I pressed the Home key while typing and Firefox suddenly went to my home page! Moreoever, it still remains unreleased after hundreds of keypresses like if I'm holding it! Same goes for the Shift key. I would rather file a bug at Launchpad if I could but I have no clue what fucking package name should I type in the ubuntu-bug command! Have anyone else had this issue? Can you suggest a solution or maybe another place to report this bug?

• Window controls missing; Cannot maximise or minimize applications

  Ubuntu 12.10 32 bits, fresh installation. How can I make Unity maximize or minimize a window? I see no button,option, anything, do I miss something big? Quick googling did not give me a piece of answer, too: On first screen, I have a terminal window. Only clue about maximizing it I found was pressing F11 which made it fullscreen, hiding left bar as well. I would prefer it to take whole free space instead of whole screen. How can I do that? On second screen, I have an opera browser which takes bigger part of the screen but I can't make it take whole screen. Restarting opera did not work. How do I minimize/maximize apps? Also, in case I would like to see the desktop, only solution I found was closing everything Help guys. I kind of like new GUI, but I can't have simplest tasks done there, I feel like I miss something big there.

  im working on a proyect with kinect sdk and xna 4.0. i need take the position of the hands and draw a sprite over it. im doing it directly and, because of that, i get a "trembling hands" effect. so, i was thinking on make the sprite move from the previous position to the new one, given in every frame by the new hand position. this way, the sprite does not jump from one position to another. this is working just fine, but im using a constant value for the velocity, and i really would like to use a variable velocity given by the difference between the prev and the new position. this is, if the hand move more quickly in the reality, the velocity will be higher. I really dont have a clue on how to make this works. can somebody point me in the right direction? thanks.

• ubuntu linux updates don't update to latest version, why?

  I'm using ubuntu and any now and then new updates are offered for installation. However I've noticed these updates don't necessarily offer the latest update for any one package, but why? For example, today, under ubuntu 11.04 I'm beeing offered to update the linux kernel from version 2.6.38.12 to 2.6.38.13, but on my secondary computer running xubuntu 11.10 the kernel version is already 3.0!? Other examples are the nautilus package which remains at version 2.32 in ubuntu 11.04 and which is already at version 3.2.1 on xubuntu 11.10, or mono JIT compiler sticking to 2.6.7 in 11.04 but already at 2.10.5 in 11.10. So, does anyone has a clue as to why these updates are updating my system to old versions?

• How to set up router with DSL?

  I have a Verizon DSL connection. I am new to being the one who has to maintain the net. We have the Verizon modem and plugged into it is a belkin router. I did not alter the configuration on either of the devices. We get a net connection, though I have issues joining any form of online game. Some refuse to connect, others are slow. I have read that perhaps I need to use the modem in "bridge mode" to the wireless router? Would that fix my issues? Or do I just have to open ports or something similar. I really have no clue what could be the problem. Could someone advice me how to get this working with Ubuntu?

• Backtrack 5 R2 Dual-Boot w/Windows 7 No Longer Loads

  A while back, I installed Backtrack 5 R2 to Dual Boot on a Windows 7 PC. It worked fine for a while, but now when I try to load it, the screen gets all messed up (tried to get a picture with my phone, but it wasn't working too well). The last line before it freezes says: fb: conflicting fb hw usage: nouveaufb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver Since it last worked, the only changes I can think of are that the computer is now connected via ethernet cable to the router, and I upgraded the graphics card (to nvidia). Because of the last line, I personally would put my money on the latter, but I still have no clue how to fix this. Can someone help me? Thanks!

• GNOME 3.8 stutters / lags

  I recently installed Fedora 19 beta and noticed unusually laggy behaviour of GNOME Shell (3.8) on the Nouveau driver on a nVidia 9200GS (also with nVidia driver) So I thought this could be related to Fedora so I installed Ubuntu 13.04 which comes with GNOME 3.6. Everything was buttery smooth as it has always been, but once I upgraded GNOME to 3.8, I experience the same laggy performance on Ubuntu as well. I'm talking about the animations, such as the window overview in activities, openSUSE live image with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 live image with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 install with 3.6 = smooth Ubuntu 13.04 install with 3.8 = laggy Fedora live image with 3.8 = laggy Fedora install with 3.8 = laggy Does anyone have a clue what could be going on?

  I attended a Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2010 HOL 1 day workshop last week and wanted to setup a VM to try the new features in my own laptop. The presenter in the workshop implicitly mentioned a tool called VirtualBox (because it's not a MS product?) but I have no clue what it is at that moment. • (Joomla 1.6) Template position descriptions don't refresh

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

• How would I know if my OS is compromised?

  I had opened a php folder from a friend's web host. I run it on mine to fix some bugs. Then I tried attaching the code to be emailed and GMAIL stated that the attachment was infected by a virus. Now I'm afraid if my Apache or OS (12.04) is infected. I checked the php files and found a base64 encoded set of code being 'eval'd at the top of each and every php file. Just reversing it (echo with htmlspecialchars) showed some clue that there were sockets in use and something to do with permissions. And also there were two websites referred having .ru extensions. Now I'm afraid if my Ubuntu system is affected or compromised. Any advice please! • hotkeys do not work sometimes in ubuntu 12.04

  I use Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity 2D and I've stumbled upon this issue: sometimes shortcut keys stop working in some windows. For instance, I have these windows opened usually: Google Chrome, Terminal, Skype, Pidgin. Sometimes everything is OK and shortcuts work no matter what window I hit them from, however, hotkeys hit from Skype (more often) or Pidgin (less often) do not work, but they still work from Terminal or Google Chrome. Moreover, not all hotkeys are affected, the problem holds only for locking the computer (Ctrl + Alt + L) and other custom shortcuts like executing some command or launching a program (I used zenity --entry with [Super | Ctrl] + [some letter: K, N, etc] for testing). Does anyone have a clue what is causing the problem and how to fix it?

  I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 several times on my macbookpro 7.1 but each times it crashed. I burned a liveCD - desktop 64bits, and launched it. • Why Firefox caching work will reset in version 3 but version 16 don't?

  I am developing a web application and have the app deployed into Tomcat server. Tested on IE and Firefox and are working fine. Meaning when I close the browser and reopen the app, the data will be reset. When deploy to Websphere, the data is reset only in IE but Firefox don't. Meaning Firefox will cache the old data. I did try to clear the cache in FF but still failed. I did a test in FF3 and FF16, FF3 will reset the value but FF16 doesn't, I am just so curious why this could happened? Now I don't know whether this is my code problem or is actually the FF caching problem. Any clue on this?

Press the button in firefox and I got connection reset thingy. I wonder why. It happens since yesterday. I have emigrated all domains that requires post requests somewhere else. • Ubuntu freezes when gdm starts

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) I was browsing in Firefox yesterday, then the PC suddenly did a reset Once it restarted, everything went normal until gdm begun showing. Then everything froze and locked when userlist showed. I can't move mouse pointer nor do anything with keyboard at this point (just after userlist shows in gdm). PS: Both, mouse and keyboard work fine, because this Ubuntu is dual-booting with a Windows XP install which loads/works fine. • How do I install PHP 5.4.8 on a Win XP workstation?

  I am trying to create a MediaWiki site on my WinXP workstation, and need to install PHP 5.4.8. I have downloaded and unpacked the binaries for PHP, but the install instructions are telling me to "Run the MSI installer and follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard." Unfortunately there is no MSI file provided in the package! Am I missing something? Besides a clue, I mean. Edited to add: I will try to make this clear. • phishing attack. Where do I start the cleanup?

I've got a domain and a site... and no clue about the web (I'm OK with files and programs... ) I got a message from google that my site is a possible phishing site, with a link the the suspect page: http://www.mydomain.com/~phishers/Paypal/us/Confirm.php needless to say, I didn't put that up. Can someone point me to a good tutorial on what to do now? I'd like to figure out what happened so I can defend against it the next time around. How do I identify what kind of attach this is? Also, what is the tilde doing in the URL path? I couldn't find any path like this on my hosting account, so I'm not entirely sure how to delete it.

• Installing 12.04 on a Dell Dimension 2200

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu from a 12.04 live CD. A few boots have gotten me (initframs) in BusyBox. During one attempt, it actually said it had loaded Ubuntu and gave me a command prompt, before quickly taking it away. After the working attempt, the HDD was removed from the BIOS menu for some reason, but was auto-detected on a boot into Windows. I haven't got a clue what I'm doing wrong. I don't get the little Ubuntu graphical splash while it boots either, but F6 (or rather spamming many keys) will display a list of the various [starting]/[stopping] it's doing.

• XBMC is slow and sluggish in Ubuntu 13.04; how can I speed it up?

  I have a Zotac ZBOX ID84 with Intel D2550 proc and Nvidia GT520M GPU, 2GB memory and 320GB hard disk. I tried XBMCbuntu first and it ran perfectly for a few months until I started to mess around with the Terminal. After a re-install I could get the HDMI sound to work again so I installed the latest version of Ubuntu (13.04) instead. That worked fine. The sound and everything worked right away, but the interface of Ubuntu is sluggish and XBMC doesn't run as good as it did in XBMCbuntu. The video playback is slow and it stutters. It speeds up and slows down with the complexity of the video. So, the PC is more than capable to run XBMC and play the videos, but something in Ubuntu (GUI?) slows it down to an unusable pace. Can anybody tell me what I can do to speed things up? Since I'm new to Ubuntu I have no clue where to start looking.
