• Acer Aspire ASE700-UQ660A will not respond to power button

  This is something of a continuation of this question. I am now completely unable to boot this computer. The last time I used it, I used hibernation mode. When I needed to use it again, it would not respond at all to the power button, keyboard, or mouse. I tried: Holding down the power button for 15 seconds pressing the power button Unplugging the power cord for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and trying again Removing the motherboard battery for over a minute and reinstalling it Before removing the motherboard battery, none of the lights on the front of the computer lit up. After reinstalling the battery and plugging the power cord back in, the light behind the power button is constantly illuminated (without even pressing the power button), but there is still no response to the power button, no fans turned on, nothing else that would indicate that it is running. System: Acer Aspire ASE700-UQ660A (Specs should be all factory defaults except:) 4 GB RAM Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT with driver version 197.45 Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

• Computer starts, POSTs normal, no video

  So, I recently tried to start up an old computer of mine. It would not power on, so I replaced the PSU. When I powered it on, all the fans spun up and the POST beeps indicated a normal startup. The problem was there was no video output. Every couple of minutes, I hear the post code again. I think it is restarting after POST, but without video I have no idea why. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening, and how to fix it? EDIT: The video card is a PCI-e card. There is no integrated graphics on the motherboard. If I remove the video card, the POST indicates a missing card. When I put it back, it goes back to normal, so I know that it recognizes that the card exists.

• Black Screen when Computer Boots

  I'm having a serious problem with my computer; I think I've narrowed it down to the motherboard, but I'd like a second opinion before I spend the money. Before I moved into my new apartment, my desktop was working fine; now, it just won't work. It will turn on, the fans will spin up, lights come on... but nothing appears on the screen. No POST, nothing. I've tried: A different monitor (both are VGA) A different video-card (both are DVI, PCIe) Three different, known-good VGA-DVI adapters The onboard video port (VGA) Reseating the memory, and trying only one stick Different, known-good wall-outlets Unplugging the HDD and CD-drive from both the motherboard and PSU Replacing the PSU Has anyone had this happen before? Perhaps it's a known problem with this motherboard? Any advice!? Here are my specs: A13G+ V3.0 motherboard 2 2-gig 800mhz DDR2 600-watt PSU two older Geforce video cards

• Intel graphics driver installer, now the CPU fan is rarely quiet

  I have an Optimus chipset: Intel HD 4000 (i7-3635QM CPU) Geforce 640m I don't care about the NVIDIA card, so I didn't try to install any proprietary drivers for it. So: I was having a choppy+high CPU experience with gnome-shell on Ubuntu 14.04. Only happened when I tried moving a window around quickly. I used the Intel graphics installer hoping that it will fix the problem. It did fix the problem, now there is no choppyness or high CPU when I move windows around. However, there is a new problem now: The fan is rarely quiet, doing barely anything at all will cause the fan to go into loud mode quickly. That happens despite the CPU usage being at just around 4%. This wasn't the case before installing Intel drivers. It would normally only do that if, for example, I'm installing packages or doing something that puts some stress on the CPU. I set all CPU cores to "powersave" using cpufreq-set, but nothing changed. Also on Windows, the fans are really quiet when I'm in powersave mode. I believe they completely shut off for most of the time. I remember the installer giving me a report at the end as to which packages it installed. Unfortunately, I didn't save the report and I don't know where it would have saved it if it did. Any ideas or similar experiences?

• WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD - what is wrong?

  Hello I have a problem with my PC getting the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bsod. It is a few months old pc. I am not overclocking or changing anything in bios, but sometimes (this is my third time) I get this bsod out of nowhere. This last time I was just watching some stream on twitch when the pc suddenly crashed. I have everything up to date in windows update and every other driver as well. Everything in Open hardware Monitor seems ok. Right now as of 10 min after the crash, the CPU temp is at 38°C, fans are at 1400RPM I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64b. Here are my spec: Intel i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz, Kingston HyperX 8GB DDR3 1600 XMP, GeForce GTX 660 with 340.52 drivers, Corsair VS450 power supply, Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3 you can see the BSOD dump here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/88i1q2nnqnpzux1/082514-29656-01.dmp?dl=0 Can anybody tell me what is wrong?

• Motherboard on, but nothing will start

  I'll try and be as clear as possible. Recently I purchased a barebones kit for my first attempt at a full PC assembly. I've gone through and connected all the parts correctly based on numerous examples that confirm everything is connected correctly. The motherboard and the video card are receiving power based on the fact that the motherboard's power LED is on and the video card has some LEDs on. Nothing else in the computer will come on when pressing the power button on the case. No fans, no hard drive, no CPU fan. Not even for a split second. I also receive no beeping noise from the speaker connected to the motherboard. I've also tried swapping the reset and power connectors from the front of the case to no luck.

  Does Space burials sounds crazy to you? Then you may not be a big fan of science fictions or a Japanese. According to a study conducted by NASA many science fiction fans prefer their final rights to be held on space and you can read more details about the research over here on NASA website. The other people who fancy about space burials are Japanese Buddhists. For those who are not aware of Space burials, it’s a procedure in which a small sample of the cremated ashes of the deceased are launched into space using spacecraft. The spacecraft will remain in orbit around the Earth or other planets  for decades and eventually burning up in the atmosphere. Celestis, an US based company, is pioneer in memorial spaceflight business and so far they have conducted a total of 10 space burials. Few of the famous people buried in space are Gene Roddenberry(creator of Star Trek),  Gerard K. • AMD Phenom 2 is idling at 50°C, can I get it cooler?

  Is it possible to damage a CPU so that it works, but only at high temperatures? My Phenom 2 1090T is idling at 50°C and I have tried everything to get it down. I can play Deus Ex HR, Arkham City, or Dirt 3 and it hovers around 60. I have cleaned out all my fans: 2 intake (front and side), 1 exhaust (Arctic Freezer). My machine is a brand new Antec 520 high current gamer. Also: Extreme3 770 8 GB Kingston DDR3 (2x4 GB) 750 GB Seagate Barracuda ASUS Xonar DG Radeon HD 5670 New Arctic Freezer Pro Rev 2 (days old and mounted properly with Arctic Silver 5). I also dropped an Athlon 250 dual core into my rig and that ran at under 30. Is the CPU dying? I know that 50°C idle for an AMD is not normal.

• DC Comics Identifies Krypton on the Star Map

  This week Action Comics Superman #14 hits the stands and DC comics reveals the actual location of Kyrpton, delivered by none other than beloved astrophysicist Neil Tyson. Phil Plait at Bad Astronomy reports on the resolution of fans’ long standing curiosity about the location of Krypton: Well, that’s about to change. DC comics is releasing a new book this week – Action Comics Superman #14 – that finally reveals the answer to this stellar question. And they picked a special guest to reveal it: my old friend Neil Tyson. Actually, Neil did more than just appear in the comic: he was approached by DC to find a good star to fit the story. Red supergiants don’t work; they explode as supernovae when they are too young to have an advanced civilization rise on any orbiting planets. Red giants aren’t a great fit either; they can be old, but none is at the right distance to match the storyline. It would have to be a red dwarf: there are lots of them, they can be very old, and some are close enough to fit the plot. I won’t keep you in suspense: the star is LHS 2520, a red dwarf in the southern constellation of Corvus (at the center of the picture here). It’s an M3.5 dwarf, meaning it has about a quarter of the Sun’s mass, a third its diameter, roughly half the Sun’s temperature, and a luminosity of a mere 1% of our Sun’s.   With the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa almost a week underway, the soccer fans all around the World are talking about at least 2 things. When you're in a situation where you're introducing a new product, in IT terms, introducing a new application, you would like to test all possible scenarios that your end users could be using and experiencing. However, that's a very time and resource intensive process to do for every application change or update.  It's like getting ready for the big game but you have no game plan.That's why a new approach has been developed. One that's based on the 80/20 rule. Testing 80% of the application will cost about 20% of the efforts. The remaining 20% of your application will not be tested before deployment, but monitored with a real user monitoring solution immediately after deployment. • Why would only the cpu fan not spin and no video displayed?

  I just built a new computer and when I first powered it on I got a continuous beeping which according to the manual means a power failure. After moving the voltage switch to the left a little I was able to get the beeping to stop. Even after the stopping though the CPU fan doesn't spin, and there is no display on the monitor. All the other fans and lights come on in the computer though, the DVD drive is working and ejects the tray, and the hard drive sounds like it spins up. Has anyone seen this before and know what is wrong or what has failed?

• Compaq 610 fan is constantly on and noisy, base is fairly hot too

  The fans on both of my HP Compaq 610s are constantly on and the base is fairly hot and I don't know if this is standard issue. HP assures me that this is unusual and that I should return them as DOA. Because both laptops have this problem, I'm thinking that this might be a design flaw rather than a one-off problem. I've updated the BIOS and using their recommended power settings. Am I missing something? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

• Can I put a laptop Core i7 CPU in a desktop?

  One of the most important thing to me for a CPU is a good mix between speed and heat. For example five years ago I bought a Core 2 Duo 6300 (max TDP 65W): I put a big heatsink on the CPU, no fans (I do hate moving parts and noise) and it worked like a charm and very silently for five years (and it still work but five years later I wouldn't mind a faster CPU and a faster memory controller and more memory). I consider a max TDP of 130W unacceptable (like some high-end Core i7 have), for several reasons. So I was wondering: can I build a desktop and put a Core i7 CPU meant to be used in laptop in it? For example I was thinking about the Core i7 740QM (max TDP 45W [!]). Are these compatible with desktop Core i7 motherboards? (for example on NewEgg it says that the "CPU socket type" for the Core i7 740QM is PGA988, I've not too sure about what this is)

• Fix Google Reader Lag by Blocking Google Plus Button

  Chrome: Many Google Reader fans have noticed, since the upgrades last month, that the service is unbearably slow. Speed things up by blocking the Google Plus button. Ever since the upgrade from the old Google Reader interface to the new integrated-with-Google-Plus interface, many Google Reader users were reporting a painfully long lag between reading entries in Reader. Previously hitting a keyboard shortcut or arrow button to move you through the new stories was instant with no noticeable lag. After the upgrade a lag of 3-5 seconds per individual story became common (we experienced this annoying lag around the How-To Geek office immediately after the upgrade). One of the theories was that the addition of the Google Plus button to every article was causing memory issues. Geeks Are Sexy tested the theory by blocking this address: plusone.google.com/u/0/_/+1/fastbutton using AdBlock. While people were reporting great success with that move (and you may find it works great too) we didn’t have any luck. What did work for us was installing Chromeblock and, while visiting reader.google.com, clicking on the ChromeBlock toolbar button and blocking Google +1. After that the 3-5 second lag vanished and browsing articles was as snappy as it had been. Hit up the link below to grab a copy of Chromeblock. • Computer won't power on

  Was working fine for over a year, now won't boot. LEDs on the GFX card and one on the MOBO labeled PWR glow when plugged in, but nothing happens when I push power and shorting switch pins does nothing either. If I pop out the CMOS battery and put it back in then try the fans lurch but nothing happens. Shorting the 15 and 16 pins turns the PSU on, and when the 24pin connector is attached to the MOBO it will start up briefly then stop. If I plug in the CPU header it returns to what I described, no power but will lurch after replacing the CMOS battery. Should I be shopping for a new PSU or is there another problem maybe?

• Improving Chrome performance on OSX

  There are a number of sites that do not display properly on Safari and I need to switch to Chrome. Although when the content of the sites requires flash player, Chrome will consume a significant amount of CPU. Running more than 3 windows, will cause my MBP to overheat, start the fans, and reduce battery life way more than Safari. What I am looking for is suggestions on ways to improve performance of Chrome running flash. I know Safari is optimised for OSX, but any improvement is welcome. Following I have a demo to display the issue. I am running same youtube video on Safari 6 and Chrome 21,both updated,at the same time. Both browsers have been reseted and have no extensions. This is run on MBP 13" 2012 with 2.9 i7 running OSX 10.8.1. p.s If any additional details can help please let me know.

• I spoke at SQL Saturday #77 and all I got was this really awesome speaker's shirt!

  Yeah, it was 2 weeks ago, but I'm finally blogging about something! I presented Revenge: The SQL! at SQL Saturday #77 in Pensacola on June 4.  The session abstract is here, and you can download the slides from that page too.  You can see how I look in the speaker's shirt here. Overall it went pretty well.  I discovered a new bit of evil just that morning and in a carefully considered, agonizing decision-making process that was full documented, tested, and approved…nah, I just went ahead and added it at the last minute.  Which worked out even better than (not) planned, since it screwed me up a bit and made my point perfectly.  I had a few fans in the audience, and one of them recorded it for blackmail material posterity. I'd like to thank Karla Landrum (blog | twitter) and all the volunteers for putting together such a great event, and for being kind enough to let me present. • Ubuntu 9.0.4 Presario S4000NX Fan Speed

  I recently install Ubuntu 9.0.4 on a Presario S4000NX and the CPU fan speed is kept at max. With Windows XP installed the fan speed would increase/decrease as required. I've tried to install lm-sensors and run the sensors-detect. It recommended that I load the modules which I did: smsc47m192 i2c-i801 When running sensor-detect it gave me this strange message: Trying family SMSC Found SMSC LPC47M15x/192/997 Super IO Fan Sensors (but not activated) Running the sensors command gives me a list of voltages and CPU and temperature but doesn't list any fans. After doing some Internet research I then tried to load the smsc47m1 module but I get the following error: FATAL: Error inserting smsc47m1 (/lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/smsc47m1.ko): no such device The file smsc47m1.ko does exist in the listed folder. Any suggestions for getting the fan speed (and the noise) down in Ubuntu? Thanx. - Chris P.S. - I would have put better tags but Server Fault wouldn't let me.

• The lifecycle of "cool"

  I've been thinking lately about how some programming projects/products become "cool," and in particular, how that trend can later reverse. Here are two examples that might better explain my context: Textmate Whenever someone asks about text editors on OS X, the answer on the SE sites is an automatic "Textmate!" But looked at objectively: Textmate 1.0 shipped October 2004 Textmate 1.5 shipped January 2006 Textmate 2 was announced February 2006 As of September 2010, the currently shipping version is 1.5.9 In all of 2010, there have been a total of three posts on the Textmate blog At what point (if ever) do Textmate fans start thinking about switching to another text editor? When it breaks after some future Apple update? When alpha geeks they respect start recommending something else? Or? jQuery Whenever a JavaScript-related question is asked on the SE sites, the knee-jerk response is "jQuery!" I've seen it happen even when the question itself only required a single line of JavaScript. Or when the question could be better answered by using CSS. Do the answerers understand they're suggesting a blowtorch to light a candle? That they're recommending adding 70K or so of code to do something trivial? Or is it a symptom of "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail"—that is, jQuery is all they know how to do, so that's their recommendation? And do they understand that while they may know jQuery well, that doesn't necessarily mean that they know JavaScript? Is there a way to explain that learning JavaScript would make them better jQuery programmers? My bigger-picture questions: Is this niche focus primarily a trait of programmers? How do you get programmers to not immediately jump to recommending their personal favorites? What can motivate programmers to review their initial selection criteria and possibly modify their choice? Your thoughts?

• Ubuntu: Take actions when system temperature gets too high

  One of the CPU fans on my Compaq Presario laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 seems to have bit the dust. The fan is deep within the case and I intend to replace the laptop in the next 6 months so it's not worth replacing it. I have the laptop on a cooling pad and most of the time the system is fine, CPU temps around 90°-110°F. Occasionally, however, I'm seeing random lockups which I believe is due to the system overheating. How can I configure the system to: Lower the CPU speed when the temperature reaches a certain level? (I.E. 110°F) Shutdown the system when the tempature reaches a critical level? (And what would that be? 130°?)
