• PC hangs and reboots from time to time

  Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Could this difference maybe be a problem? Here is a list of my components. I hope that anybody find something I didn't think about yet. • Win7 Pro x64 task manager hangs when restarting explorer.exe after waking from sleep

  I have a desktop running Windows 7 x64 Pro, set for Hybrid Sleep on a wired network. Wakeup is only enabled from the keyboard (wake on mouse and Wake-On-LAN are both disabled). Sometimes when it wakes up, there is no network connectivity. The notification area icons for both network and volume don't respond to clicks. If I open the Network and Sharing Center, clicking the red X doesn't do anything. Restarting does fix the problem, but I'm looking for a solution that does not require restarting (if at all possible). Drivers are all up to date. I've tried opening Task Manager and restarting the explorer.exe process, but Task Manager freezes for a few minutes, the "New Task" dialog closes, and explorer.exe has not restarted. CPU and memory usage are both normal. One thread suggested making sure the BIOS was set for S3 sleep mode only (not S1 or S1 & S3), but I haven't checked this yet. Going back to sleep and waking back up does not help. So far only a reboot has fixed the issue. • Win7-Server2008 RDP connection hangs on "Securing Remote Connection" for 20-30 seconds

  I have a problem that googling has turned up nothing, except this question on experts exchange which I borrowed most of the text from. :) When I connect via Remote Desktop to a new Windows 2008 R2 server it takes 20-30s to get past the "Securing Remote Connection" message during the login. If the password is wrong, it does this every time you attempt a login (ie its not a one time thing). However, after a successful login attempt the following logins to the same server goes faster. Most servers runs on VMware here, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

  Can't use the su method, since I don't really want to veer from the Ubunut default too much. ssh is right out (for localhost? I ask you!). It shows a "Waiting fro prompts from remote shell". And that's it, apparently. Or is it just that incredibly slow?

I did notice the process name on the terminal's tab was "sort", so the second time I hit this I tried Control-D (End-of-File), and this did seem to unstick it. I'm wondering if there's some misformed command and sort was trying to read from stdin? Questions: 1: Has anybody else seen this? Google wasn't helpful 2: Fink outputs a LOT of warnings and errors.... is that normal? 3: wondering if anybody's got Fink to compile Octave on Mountain Lion specifically? And whether they used just "octave" or "octave-atlas". Or if you got it working with MacPorts or Homebrew? 4: later Fink failed with "Failed: phase compiling: gnuplot-minimal-4.6.1-1 failed". I haven't started googling that yet... but wondering if anybody's see that? Also tried MacPorts but got other errors with Octave. And reading online it looks like HomeBrew also has issues with Octave on Mountain Lion. 5: Generally looking for anybody who's got Octave running on Mountain Lion with any of the package managers. I've been at this for a couple days ;-)

• FTP transfer hangs for random files

  I've been stuck on this FTP issue for a while now. I have IIS 7 setup with an IIS 6 FTP server running on a Windows Server 2008 box. The problem I am running into is that I can't download certain files from the FTP server, even though I uploaded those files to the FTP server. The connection times out after 120 seconds. I have used Wireshark and checked the log files. The only message I see is the timeout message. The first thing that came to my mind was permission issues, however I have probably tried every combination of permissions that I can think of, with the end goal of getting the permissions to be the same for the files that work and the files that do not work. With the list of files I have now, I can download the zip, war, and msi files, but not the txt or sql files. It almost seems like a binary thing, but I've changed my transfer mode on the FTP client and also toggled the Active/Passive options around.

• Xubuntu login hangs after Cancel Button click

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04 (I installed using the alternative installer.) running in Virtaulbox 4.1.20 My issue is with the login screen (lightdm-gtk-greeter). It usually runs just fine, and allows users to log in and out but it will hang if the user presses the cancel button. The interface is still working (ie, shutdown menu is still available, I can switch to a different tty) but the username or password field (depending on when the button is hit) is disabled. Restarting lightdm will reset the screen, but the problem still exists. The issue is only with the cancel button. The login, session, and language buttons/menus as well as the accessibility and shutdown menu appear to work normally. I've modified some of the config files for lighdm-gtk-greeter, specifically /etc/lightdm/lighdm-gtk-greeter.conf to change the background image and /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf to disable the user list. I did not check to see if the error existed before the changes took place. The changes have been restored the default settings but the problem persists.   I have: Windows XP Pro SP3 with latest updates, drivers, .NET, etc. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2GB RAM 150GB HD ATI Radeon HD 3400 Recently (as early as a week ago) Visual C++ (both 2005 Pro and 2008 Express) started hanging up my computer. Whenever they are run, after 5-20 minutes of work the computer freezes. Everything becomes unresponsive, including the mouse cursor. No combination of keys does anything. What's strange, is that Winamp/Firefox continues to play whatever it was playing at the time (internet radio, mp3 playlist, etc). The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've run CCleaner and a full AVG antivirus scan, both of which found nothing suspicious. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

• Robocopy launches and then hangs/just sits there

  I'm setting up an archive process to store old files on an external hard drive. The computer in question is running Windows 7 Pro 32bit. We have a server folder with 150,000+ files in it, most of which are pretty small (below 200k). I'm trying to use robocopy in a batch file to do this. It was working fine the other day, now all it does upon launch is sit there. It shows me all the options and whatnot, and also lists the number of files in the directory and the directory itself, but it never gets past that line. If I switch the destination to the local C drive, it eventually starts copying files. Is there something in my batch file that needs to change? Or could there be a problem with the external Western Digital drive that I'm using? The WD drive currently is holding about 175,000 files. • Windows Server 2003 DC hangs after network drivers update

  Earlier today, we attempted to update the Broadcom BCM5716C network drivers on a Windows Server 2003. (Dell PowerEdge T310, FWIW). Since then we have not been able to boot the server in any normal mode. Safe Mode works. Safe Mode with Networking and regular bootups hang at "Applying Network Settings." I haven't tried Last Known Good Configuration nor have I tried Directory Services Restore Mode. I should also mention that the longest I've allowed "Applying Network Settings" was perhaps 30 minutes. I spoke to Dell since the server is under a basic warranty. They sent me the original Broadcom drivers. The trouble seems to be, however, that since I can only boot in Safe Mode, I can't install the application package as given. In safe mode, I receive the error: "The system administrator has set policies to prohibit this installation." I can install the drivers independently, but that doesn't allow the NICs to work. The most I've been able to get are Code 10 errors on each NIC. I plan to get back to the site tomorrow to attempt installation of a different NIC. I'm wondering what else I can try.

• Command prompt hangs/freezes/crashes sporadically

  I'm finding it very difficult to Google this, I don't seem to be able to find anyone with the same issue and I don't know enough about the Windows operating system to troubleshoot. The machine(s) we are seeing the problem on are Windows 7 (professional) both 64bit and 32bit. The problem is with the command prompt freezing up, seemingly randomly. When it does freeze nothing will bring it back to life (i.e. keypress) and it's nothing to do with Quick Insert mode either. It doesn't seem to be when I run standard commands, such as cd, dir, etc, but when I run different programs from the command line. The annoying thing is that sometimes the prompt will freeze and at other times it won't, using the same program/command in the prompt. To add to the frustration, one of my colleagues who had the same problem seems to not have experienced it for a few days now (we're pretty heavy on the command line). It's not a VPN/RDP thing as suggested in other questions and forum posts, as I've seen this both locally and remotely. I thought it was to do with the return code signifying an error or some error state in the program, i.e.: C:\Users\leonardc>mysql -u lalala ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'lalala'@'localhost' (using password: NO) but this isn't always the case either. In fact the above command hasn't crashed the shell before. Elevating the prompt to run as Administrator doesn't seem to have any bearing on the problem either. Disabling my anti-virus doesn't have an effect either. Update: I tried the same commands in PowerShell, but I still get the same problem, it will freeze at random times (more often than not, as with the command prompt, but not always). It's not the same as command prompt in the fact that one might work while the other doesn't, but then the next time I try run the same command in both it will suddenly be different again.

I tried to revert the change using both: BCDEDIT /set increaseUserva 2048 or BCDEDIT /deletevalue increaseUserva But, I get to the same problem when I run the Matlab code. When I check bcdedit/enum all, it does not contain increaseUserva, after /deletevalue command. Any idea?

  As the title states, I have a problem. This server and the installation disc are also on the other side of the world to me so... So far, I have tried to start the install with the parameters: linux text noapic noacpi no=apic no=acpi which results in the same hang. I have also disabled a PCI ethernet adapter, I am uneasy about disabling the onboard ethernet adapter I do not know if ILO uses this. Anyone have any advice? Much appreciated. • Computer hangs at boot screen with new RAID card

  I am trying to build a new server around a Biostar TH61 motherboard and an Adaptec 6405E RAID controller card. The machine booted fine from USB before the RAID card and drives were installed. After installing, on the first boot the card was detected, but then started to spit out the following message every 10 seconds: Error: Controller Kernel Stopped Running << Press any key to continue ... Following the troubleshooting guide I unplugged everything, reseated the card, and reattached all the drives. This time the machine is sitting on the boot screen without any error messages and flashing a cursor, but after 15 minutes of this, nothing seems to be happening. Given that there are no error messages I'm hesitant to reboot again. Is it normal for a RAID card to sit without a status message when it firsts boots, maybe to initialise the drives or something? The current screen output looks a bit like this: Controller #00 found at PCI Slot:01, Bus:01, Dev:00, Func:00 Controller Model: Adaptec 6405E Firmware Version: 5.2-0[18512] Memory Size: 128MB Serial number: 111111111111111 SAS WWN: 50000D1104AE9180 _ Update: So after waiting 30 minutes I've rebooted back to the Kernal Stopped Running error.   Hi all, I have virtual box installed on a windows 7 64-bit computer, with Cent OS 5.5 as guest os. I want to be able to use ftp between those. I've installed vsftpd on the guest os, and the guest os uses a nat connection with the host os for internet. So far, I am able to connect to the guest os using ftp (in filezilla), but after the list command is executed, nothing happens, until the command is timed out. This happens in both active and passive mode. I do have set a pasv_min/max_port in the vsftpd.conf file, listing is enabled, and the ports are redirected in virtualbox. Also the ftp_data_port is set to 20. I also tried setting the pasv_address, but I had to set it to 127.0.0.1, but than filezilla gives me this: Command: PASV Response: 500 OOPS: bad family Command: PORT 127,0,0,1,139,204 Response: 500 OOPS: child died Can someone help me with this?

• Windows Explorer hangs when opening a specific folder

  When I open a particular folder on my inside a folder on my desktop. This folder was copied via a DVD-ROM from a previous computer. I didn't have any problems with this folder on the other computer. There are 36,316 files and 7,558 folders in this directory and it's 3.30GB. Any ideas why this might be happening?

• recursive grep started at / hangs

  I have used following grep search pattern on multiple platforms: grep -r -I -D skip 'string_to_match' / For example on FreeBSD 8.0, FreeBSD 6.4 and Debian 6.0(squeeze). Command does a recursive search starting from root directory, assumes that binary files do not have the 'string_to_match' and skips devices, sockets and named pipes. FreeBSD 8.0 and FreeBSD 6.4 use GNU grep version 2.5.1 and Debian 6.0 uses GNU grep version 2.6.3. On FreeBSD 6.4, last information printed to stderr was "grep: /dev/cuad0: Device busy". After this grep just idles as according to "top -m io -o total" the I/O usage of grep is nonexistent. Same behavior is true under FreeBSD 8.0, but last information sent to stderr is "grep: /tmp/.wine-0: Permission denied" on my installation. In case of Debian, last output to stderr is "grep: /proc/sysrq-trigger: Input/output error". Is there a way to view which file grep is currently processing in case lsof is not present? I'm able to use lsof under Debian and looks like the problematic file name there is "0xc6b2c230 file struct, ty=0, op=0xc0d34120". I'm not sure what this is.. I'm not able to use lsof or fstat under FreeBSD. PS: I know I could use find utility, but this is not the question.
