  • How do I run a stable Windows XP kvm guest on Ubuntu 10.04?

    I have three Windows XP guests running on a recently upgraded 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 system. Occasionally (on the order of once every few days), one of the guests will become non-responsive and the kvm process on the host which is running that guest will start consuming 100% CPU. It will continue to do so until it is killed. When restarted, it will be fine for a while, and then the issue repeats. And what configuration can I change in order to fix it? Or, if the problem is due to a bug in kvm, what is the process for isolating a kvm failure so that the developers have a chance of fixing it?

  • VLAN Through Switch Doesn't Work

    I have the following scenario: I have a Cisco Aironet 1040 access point. I have it configured with two SSIDs, each going to a different VLAN. So: SSID internal : VLAN 90 SSID guest : VLAN 70 On the router side, I have a Cisco RV220W (with the radios now turned off) and have setup VLANs with like VLAN IDs. VLAN 90 : 192.168.90.0/24 VLAN 70 : 192.168.70.0/24 As far as DHCP is concerned, each VLAN has a "DHCP Server" in the router's configuration: So with the access point connected directly to the router, everything works great. I connect to the internal network, and I get a 192.168.90.x address, and the guest network gets a 70.xxx address. Next I introduced a Cisco SG200-50 PoE switch between the router and the access point. The port is configured as a trunk port, so the VLAN tags should go right through the switch back to the router. However, when something is connected to the access point, nothing works. It isn't able to get an IP address, and manually assigning one doesn't seem to let any traffic route. Given that the access point works correctly when connected to the router directly, I believe the switch is misconfigured. What am I missing here? What can I use to better diagnose what the problem might be? It's small business equipment, so CLI access is not available. Below are screenshots of the switch's config.   • What switch should we use for PCoIP?

    We have a small lab space that seats 10 people and has 20 machines. Each machine is set to 1920x1200 resolution because the user apps are best used at that resolution. Currently the machines are all located close enough to montors that a DisplayPort cable will reach, but the pending lab remodel positions them around 80 feet or more away in racks. Our proposed solution is to use PCoIP. We purchased 10 PCoIP portals and 20 PCoIP host cards. We plan to set up a dedicated network to handle just the PCoIP traffic. After testing just one portal and one host card with a cheap 1G switch from a local office supply store, we were left with less than good impressions about the usefulness in our lab. The framerates were not spectacular and the mouse seemed jerky. Our concern is that we can't get away with the cheap 1G stuff from the store because adding more machines to the switch will just make the user experience worse. What switch would be recommended to best support our PCoIP situation? We will need to plug in at least 30 cables based on just those machines. Is there a particular feature to search for that makes a difference? Is there a switch that works best with PCoIP? Added Info: The reporting webapp for the host card shows maximum bandwidth usage to be 220000 kbps. The average appears to be around 180000 kbps. The reverse direction is much lower, like 15000 kbps.

    I currently have a Linksys WRT160N that has a couple wireless clients and a few wired clients. We are planning to switch from DSL to cable and unfortunately, there isn't a cable point in a location close to the wired clients (i.e. the new location of the router would be too far from the wired clients to lay Ethernet cables). Thus, I was wondering if there was a wireless switch of some sort in which it would be a standard Ethernet switch that would connect to my wireless network? (This is a home network,of course.)

Of the two wires, they are either: Color and white (reset switch, power LED, HDD LED) red and black (speaker, power switch) The manual for the motherboard has a nice diagram of where to plug them in, but has them labeled + or -. Which colors are positive, and which are negative?

  • Getting packets from one port to another on a Dell PowerConnect 2824 switch

    I have a dell PowerConnect 2824 and I have a cat 5 cable connected from port 1 to port 23. Port 1 is reserved for VLAN 1 (the only VLAN that can manage the switch) and port 18-23 belong to VLAN 112. I currently have the switch setup with ip 10.71.3.5/27 and a test machine plugged into port 22 with IP address 10.71.3.30/27. For some reason I can not ping 10.71.3.5 from my test machine (10.71.3.30). Note: When I try to ping the server plugged into port 21 (IP: 10.71.3.7/27) also VLAN 112, I get responses just fine. Note: When I plug my test machine directly into port 1, I can ping 10.71.3.5 just fine.   • dd-wrt switch for PfSense

    I currently have eth2 on my pfsense set up, and configured as 192.168.1.1, it has dhcp setup with allocation being 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.245. On my dd-wrt box, i disabled the WAN, and set it to act as a port for the switch. I disabled dhcp, dnsmasq, spi firewall, Wlan0 and set a static IP for the router being 192.168.1.10 Pfsense is plugged into lan0 and pc plugged into lan1 (wan port is empty) I have followed a few different guides, but i can't seem to get my router to act as a switch. Anyone have success using DD-WRT as a switch while using pfsense as your dhcp/dns/gateway. Any advice would help :)

    Hallo, for a rack containing a smaller nubmer of servers (5 at the moment, going to stay in this area), I look to replace the currently aging 100mbit switch with a 1gb switch. This is for the backend between the servers. I expect some ISCIS traffic there ,so a 10gbit option would be nice (preferably for two ports, as extension modules). I dont need management, this is a pure backend of an internal cluster. I do VLAN, but there is no sensible management the switch can do there. I wuold like: * 1he only, obviously * preferable limited moving parts. * Low price ;) * Enough power to run at least half the ports in full speed at the same time. Anyone any recommendations?

    there is a network including a router, two hosts and a switch which connects hosts to router. i have a virtual machine on my system. the network adapter is set to act as bridge. so the virtual machine and real OS are my 2 hosts on different LAN. they use one network card and are connected to a switch. when each of host send a packet to the other one, the switch duplicate the packet and forward it to both router and the other host. how can I solve the duplicate packet problem?     So... Hopefully; this is the right place for this question. I need more Ethernet ports on my home network. Sadly, we already have an old router connected to the main router and we still need more ports. I feel dumb for asking; but, I just would like to double check. Would the devices connected to the switch be "protected" by the Main router's firewall? ? Up to this point I have assumed that was the case; but, a co-worker is convinced that is not the case [ I believe he is thinking of a situation in which the switch (un-managed) is before an access point]. [It would go modem to main router; main router then has the switch and old router connected to it.

A number will be inputted through the keyboard and stored in a variable I called "num." I then wondered what the essential difference is between a switch statement and a series of if statements. I know it saves space and time to write, but it's not that much. So, my question is, aside from the space, does a switch statement differ from a series of if statments in any way? Is it faster, less error-prone, etc.? This question really doesn't affect my code that much. I was just wondering. Also, this question pertains to the JAVA language, not any other programming language.

  • Why don't languages use explicit fall-through on switch statements?

    I was reading Why do we have to use break in switch?, and it led me to wonder why implicit fall-through is allowed in some languages (such as PHP and JavaScript), while there is no support (AFAIK) for explicit fall-through. It's not like a new keyword would need to be created, as continue would be perfectly appropriate, and would solve any issues of ambiguity for whether the author meant for a case to fall through. The currently supported form is: switch (s) { case 1: ... break; case 2: ... //ambiguous, was break forgotten? case 3: ... break; default: ... break; } Whereas it would make sense for it to be written as: switch (s) { case 1: ... break; case 2: ... continue; //unambiguous, the author was explicit case 3: ... break; default: ... break; } For purposes of this question lets ignore the issue of whether or not fall-throughs are a good coding style. Are there any languages that exist that allow fall-through and have made it explicit? Are there any historical reasons that switch allows for implicit fall-through instead of explicit?

    We're looking at hooking up 48 small embedded systems with 10/100 Ethernet ports to an Ethernet switch and then have that switch talk to a server upstream via a faster connection. I have a couple of questions about that scenario: What kind of upstream connection is best (fiber, other?) Would it be reasonable to download 1GB/hour from each of the 48 systems concurrently?   • Using VNC as a virtual KVM switch

    I'm wanting to control my laptop from my desktop. I've been doing this with VNC (PC desktop to Macbook pro) - but I want to remove the 'viewing' aspect of it on my desktop. I.e. I don't want to have the viewing screen on the desktop.. but be able to control the mouse/keyboard via VNC. Is this possible? I'm using realVNC viewer and connecting to the default in-built VNC server on Mac OS X Lion. Cheers for any help.

  • dnsmasq(as DHCP server) isn't working in KVM+libvirt envirmont

    I'm using dnsmasq as DHCP server in VM environment. But It didn't working. I disabled basic DHCP feature in libvirt. <network> <name>default</name> <uuid>84da0678-e56d-8fc2-6f8b-e8eba784849a</uuid> <forward mode='nat'/> <bridge name='virbr0' stp='on' delay='0' /> <mac address='52:54:00:7B:64:0B'/> <ip address='192.168.122.1' netmask='255.255.255.0'> </ip> </network> As you can see, I removed this tag! <dhcp> <range start='192.168.122.2' end='192.168.122.254' /> </dhcp> And I installed dnsmasq in Host machine. During installation dnsmasq, there was an error message about 127.0.0.1.(dnsmasq: failed to create listening socket for 127.0.0.1) So I commented out listen-address option, and added dhcp-range/dhcp-option options, like this. listen-address=127.0.0.1 dhcp-range=192.168.122.100,192.168.122.200,24h dhcp-option=option:router,192.168.122.1 That's all I've done with dnsmasq. But guest VM couldn't get IP address from host which is dnsmasq server running. After that , I installed isc-dhcp-server instead of dnsmasq.... and it works! But I still want to use dnsmasq instead of isc-dhcp-server. Are there any helping hands? I disabled host machine's firewall. I've heard that libvirt basically use dnsmasq. Is this the reason why I couldn't use dnsmasq in libvirt environment?

  • Looking for a fiber optic "switch" or "router" for home use

    The gist of my question: What is a "fiber optic" switch called? I.E. a layer 2 ethernet switch that uses fiber TX and RX connections and sends layer 2 network traffic between the fiber strands that are connected. Can someone purchase a dedicated fiber switch that does not have copper ethernet ports? What is the current average price of a device like this? Not necessarily looking for product endorsements, just information Might not make sense to go this route if it is too cost prohibitive What type of fiber connector is used for terminating a fiber strand into a jack on the wall? Can fiber be "patched" using two jacks and a "patch" cable? Is signal loss a concern with the longest runs at 100-200ft, a patch cable and media converters? The full story: My parents had unterminated fiber optic cable and terminated Cat5e run throughout their home when it was built in 2004. 10 years later the Cat5e isn't providing the throughput that my father needs to accomplish multiple streams of HD and fast system backups throughout the house. He can't reach gigabit speeds across the distance of the Cat5e runs. We are both interested in terminating the fiber connections and using them as high speed "backbones" to copper switches in each room of the house. It would be easy to attain gigabit speeds (or better, eventually) using the fiber. I have searched and searched for a "fiber optic switch" or "fiber optic router" and cannot find the correct term to describe this piece of hardware. We can use fiber media converters at the end points of each connection, however it would be nice to have a "patch panel" set up in the network closet in the basement that has fiber connections on it and switches the ethernet streams between the connections/systems in the house. Each fiber media converter costs between $50-$100 a piece... After 10 or so terminated connections it might make sense to find a piece of hardware that does not require media converters. That would depend upon the cost of this hardware Somewhat unrelated, if we are able to route between these fiber strands successfully, what is the physical connector type used in a jack on the wall? Just like RJ45 has a wall outlet (depicted below): What is the fiber optic equivalent of this? In the interim could we "patch" a couple fiber strands together in the network closet? Would signal loss be of concern with a run length of 100-200 feet, a patch cable and two media converters? If that would work then it could be used until the funds are available for more.

  • IOGEAR KVM cannot reset admin account

    According to the manual you can do a cold reset by holding the reset button in for 3 seconds. This does seem to reset it but the username and password are not reset... I've tried the keyboard hotkeys - Num-Lock and minus sign (-) to get into hotkey mode and then use the "r" and "" to reset to factory defaults but that doesnt seem to do anything either. It just reverts to User1. I'm not sure what the default admin username should be but admin doesnt seem to work I need to get to the admin menu to name the ports but cannot get access. Any ideas? Using GCS1758 manual with no luck.

  • Can not boot CentOS VM using VirtIO in KVM

    I converted qcow2 image to raw and changed I/O bus to VirtIO for a VM. now I can't boot that VM. I Installed VirtIO driver with following command: mkinitrd --with virtio_pci --with virtio_blk -f /boot/initrd-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r) and these are related kernel modules: virtio_balloon 11329 0 virtio_blk 11593 3 virtio_pci 11845 0 virtio_ring 8513 1 virtio_pci virtio 9541 3 virtio_balloon,virtio_blk,virtio_pci and this is what happens during boot-up. I also changed /boot/grub/device.map from "(hd0) /dev/sda" to "(hd0) /dev/vda" but problem still exists. any ideas how to fix this ? This is my default option to boot: title CentOS (2.6.18-308.13.1.el5) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 initrd /initrd-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5.img

Normally it works well, but when I run VIM: Then it can't be recovered unless I cut the connection up: It's very hard to work with a broken terminal. Any advice? My terminal works well on my local machine and the remote machine in which the virtual machine runs.

  • Routing table with two NIC adapters in libvirt/KVM

    I created a virtual NAT network (192.168.100.0/24 network) in my libvirt and new guest with two interfaces - one in this network, one as bridged (10.34.1.0/24 network) to the local LAN. The reason for that is I need to have my own virtual network for my DHCP/TFTP/DNS testing and still want to access my guest externally from my LAN. On both networks I have working DHCP, both giving them IP addresses. When I setup NAT port forwarding (e.g. for ssh), I can connect to the eth0 (virtual network), everything is fine. But when I try to access the eth1 via bridged interface, I have no response. I guess I have problem with my routing table - outgoing packets are routed to the virtual NAT network (which has access to the machine I am connecting from - I can ping it). But I am not sure if this setup is correct. I originally bought the dlink router mainly because it is fast, much faster than any other consumer router I have tried. The only router which is capable of real 10MB/s d download speed. I need a switch which will not cause a bottle neck to the router. The switch will connect the to the server and the dlink router.
