  • FreeBSD jail IMAP/MTA config recommendations

    I've got access to my "own" FreeBSD jail. The jail has only basic, unconfigured system, but I have full access to FreeBSD ports, and (jail)root too. Now I need to setup my jail as IMAP/MTA. The question: What packages are EASIEST for config and later administration, (the simplest possible setup, with the minimum needed configuration) when: i haven't any preferences (don't know any yet) my (one) domain is managed by ISP, so don't need DNS need only IMAP for few users (up to 20 mailboxes) need secure transport layer (IMAPS/993) password auth, no LDAP, no kerberos, nor databases, nothing like fancy things... need easy-setup easy-admin MTA, with simplest possible password SMTP auth, (again no LDAP, nor DB), secure transport layer but would be nice have virus-scan and some anti-spam protection So, what ports I should install for MTA and IMAP? MTA (Sendmail, Postfix, Exim)? antivirus (ClamAV) antispam??? IMAP(S), (Dovecot, Courier) when the main criteria are: easy setup, and easy administration. When I googled I found only complicated setups for thousands of users with LDAP, databases and so on - too big-caliber for my small (easy?) needs. Any pointer to an easy howto is very welcomed.

  • SQL SERVER – Select the Most Optimal Backup Methods for Server

    Backup and Restore are very interesting concepts and one should be very much with the concept if you are dealing with production database. One never knows when a natural disaster or user error will surface and the first thing everybody wants is to get back on point in time when things were all fine. Well, in this article I have attempted to answer a few of the common questions related to Backup methodology. How to Select a SQL Server Backup Type In order to select a proper SQL Server backup type, a SQL Server administrator needs to understand the difference between the major backup types clearly. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, let me offer it to you below. Select a Recovery Model First The very first question that you should ask yourself is: Can I afford to lose at least a little (15 min, 1 hour, 1 day) worth of data? Resist the temptation to save it all as it comes with the overhead – majority of businesses outside finances can actually afford to lose a bit of data. If your answer is YES, I can afford to lose some data – select a SIMPLE (default) recovery model in the properties of your database, otherwise you need to select a FULL recovery model. The additional advantage of the Full recovery model is that it allows you to restore the data to a specific point in time vs to only last backup time in the Simple recovery model, but it exceeds the scope of this article Backups in SIMPLE Recovery Model In SIMPLE recovery model you can select to do just Full backups or Full + Differential. Full Backup This is the simplest type of backup that contains all information needed to restore the database and should be your first choice. It is often sufficient for small databases, but note that it makes a big impact on the performance of your database Full + Differential Backup After Full, Differential backup picks up all of the changes since the last Full backup. This means if you made Full, Diff, Diff backup – the last Diff backup contains all of the changes and you don’t need the previous Differential backup. Differential backup is obviously smaller and carries less performance overhead Backups in FULL Recovery Model In FULL recovery model you can select Full + Transaction Log or Full + Differential + Transaction Log backup. You have to create Transaction Log backup, because at that time the log is being truncated. Otherwise your Transaction Log will grow uncontrollably. Full + Transaction Log Backup You would always need to perform a Full backup first. Then a series of Transaction log backup. Note that (in contrast to Differential) you need ALL transactions to log since the last Full of Diff backup to properly restore. Transaction log backups have the smallest performance overhead and can be performed often. Full + Differential + Transaction Log Backup If you want to ease the performance overhead on your server, you can replace some of the Full backup in the previous scenario with Differential. You restore scenario would start from Full, then the Last Differential, then all of the remaining transactions log backups Typical backup Scenarios You may say “Well, it is all nice – give me the examples now”. As you may already know, my favorite SQL backup software is SQLBackupAndFTP. If you go to Advanced Backup Schedule form in this program and click “Load a typical backup plan…” link, it will give you these scenarios that I think are quite common – see the image below. The Simplest Way to Schedule SQL Backups I hate to repeat myself, but backup scheduling in SQL agent leaves a lot to be desired. I do not know the simple way to schedule your SQL server backups than in SQLBackupAndFTP – see the image below. The whole backup scheduling with compression, encryption and upload to a Network Folder / HDD / NAS Drive / FTP / Dropbox / Google Drive / Amazon S3 takes just a few minutes – see my previous post for the review.   • Ops Center 12c - Update - Provisioning Solaris on x86 Using a Card-Based NIC

    Last week, I posted a blog describing how to use Ops Center to provision Solaris over the network via a NIC on a card rather than the built-in NIC.  Really, that was all about how to install Solaris on a SPARC system.  This week, we'll look at how to do the same thing for an x86-based server. Really, the overall process is exactly the same, at least for Solaris 11, with only minor updates. We will focus on Solaris 11 for this blog.  Once I verify that the same approach works for Solaris 10, I will provide another update. Booting Solaris 11 on x86 Just as before, in order to configure the server for network boot across a card-based NIC, it is necessary to declare the asset to associate the additional MACs with the server.  You likely will need to access the server console via the ILOM to figure out the MAC and to get a good idea of the network instance number.  The simplest way to find both of these is to start a network boot using the desired NIC and see where it appears in the list of network interfaces and what MAC is used when it tries to boot.  Go to the ILOM for the server.  Reset the server and start the console.  When the BIOS loads, select the boot menu, usually with Ctrl-P.  This will give you a menu of devices to boot from, including all of the NICs.  Select the NIC you want to boot from.  Its position in the list is a good indication of what network number Solaris will give the device. In this case, we want to boot from the 5th interface (GB_4, net4).  Pick it and start the boot processes.  When it starts to boot, you will see the MAC address for the interface Once you have the network instance and the MAC, go through the same process of declaring the asset as in the SPARC case.  This associates the additional network interface with the server.. Creating an OS Provisioning Plan The simplest way to do the boot via an alternate interface on an x86 system is to do a manual boot.  Update the OS provisioning profile as in the SPARC case to reflect the fact that we are booting from a different interface.  Update, in this case, the network boot device to be GB_4/net4, or the device corresponding to your network instance number.  Configure the profile to support manual network boot by checking the box for manual boot in the OS Provisioning profile. Booting the System Once you have created a profile and plan to support booting from the additional NIC, we are ready to install the server. Again, from the ILOM, reset the system and start the console.  When the BIOS loads, select boot from the Boot Menu as above.  Select the network interface from the list as before and start the boot process.  When the grub bootloader loads, the default boot image is the Solaris Text Installer.  On the grub menu, select Automated Installer and Ops Center takes over from there. Lessons The key lesson from all of this is that Ops Center is a valuable tool for provisioning servers whether they are connected via built-in network interfaces or via high-speed NICs on cards.  This is great news for modern datacenters using converged network infrastructures.  The process works for both SPARC and x86 Solaris installations.  And it's easy and repeatable.

  • Figuring out the performance limitation of an ADC on a PIC microcontroller

    I'm spec-ing the suitability of a microcontroller like PIC for an analog-to-digital application. This would be preferable to using external A/D chips. To do that, I've had to run through some computations, pulling the relevant parameters from the datasheets. I'm not sure I've got it right -- would appreciate a check! Here's the simplest example: PIC10F220 is the simplest possible PIC with an ADC. Runs at clock speed of 8MHz. Has an instruction cycle of 0.5us (4 clock steps per instruction) So: Taking Tacq = 6.06 us (acquisition time for ADC, assume chip temp. = 50*C) [datasheet p34] Taking Fosc = 8MHz (? clock speed) Taking divisor = 4 (4 clock steps per CPU instruction) This gives TAD = 0.5us (TAD = 1/(Fosc/divisor) ) Conversion time is 13*TAD [datasheet p31] This gives conversion time 6.5us ADC duration is then 12.56 us [? Tacq + 13*TAD] Assuming at least 2 instructions for load/store: This is another 1 us [0.5 us per instruction] Which would give max sampling rate of 73.7 ksps (1/13.56) Supposing 8 more instructions for real-time processing: This is another 4 us Thus, total ADC/handling time = 17.56us (12.56us + 1us + 4us) So expected upper sampling rate is 56.9 ksps. Nyquist frequency for this sampling rate is therefore 28 kHz. If this is right, it suggests the (theoretical) performance suitability of this chip's A/D is for signals that are bandlimited to 28 kHz. Is this a correct interpretation of the information given in the data sheet? Any pointers would be much appreciated! AKE

  • CharField values disappearing after save (readonly field)

    I'm implementing simple "grade book" application where the teacher would be able to update the grades w/o being allowed to change the students' names (at least not on the update grade page). To do this I'm using one of the read-only tricks, the simplest one. The problem is that after the SUBMIT the view is re-displayed with 'blank' values for the students. I'd like the students' names to re-appear. Below is the simplest example that exhibits this problem. (This is poor DB design, I know, I've extracted just the relevant parts of the code to showcase the problem.   • Mutex example / tutorial ?

    I've noticed that asking questions for the sake of creating a reference list etc. is encouraged in SO. This is one such question, so that anyone Googling for a mutex tutorial will find a good one here. I'm new to multithreading, and was trying to understand how mutexes work. Did a lot of Googling and this is the only decent tutorial I found, but it still left some doubts of how it works because I created my own program and the locking didn't work. One absolutely non-intuitive syntax of the mutex is pthread_mutex_lock( &mutex1 );, where it looks like the mutex is being locked, when what I really want to lock is some other variable. Does this syntax mean that locking a mutex locks a region of code until the mutex is unlocked? Then how do threads know that the region is locked? And isn't such a phenomenon supposed to be called critical section? In short, could you please help with the simplest possible mutex example program and the simplest possible explanation on the logic of how it works? I'm sure this will help plenty of other newbies.

  • Simple Image Capture Tool for Mac OS X that uses FireWire

    I have Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) on a G4 Powerbook and a camcorder with a firewire device. It doesn't have iMovie, which is now part of the separate iLife Suite and requires an Intel Mac. Anyway, Image Capture does not recognize the firewire video feed as an image capture device. What software would give me the simplest "capture this frame from live firewire video feed to image" functionality.

  • Simple tool to graph memory usage?

    Is there a script that will show memory usage as a graph, for example as a pie-chart, with each process being being a separate slice? I'm not looking for something like Munin to graph memory usage over time, but rather show the memory usage per-process at a single point in time. To make my request even more obscure, it is for a headless server (so no X applications). The simplest way would be to write a PNG file, or possibly an HTML file (which could use Javascript to allow the filtering of processes, changing between graph-types and so on)

  • Is it possible to print on a networked Windows Print server from an AIX server, without using remote

    I have an application on an AIX server (v5.3) that needs to print via a Windows Print Server over the LAN. The simplest way to do this is to use SMIT to setup a remote print queue - which I've done on the test environment - but the IT department have refused to set up a remote print queue on the Production server. I don't have root access to the Production server. Is there any other method for connecting the app to the print server that doesn't involve print queues on the AIX box?

  • Migrate data from one server to another using rsync

    I'm moving from one VPS to another, and I figured that the simplest way to transfer data would be rsync. However, the data is owned by a user, www-data, which doesn't have ssh privileges, and I'd like it to be owned by the same (named) user on the target machine. Obviously I need all file permissions preserved. I have SSH access via another user with sudo privileges on both machines. Is this possible to do this with rsync?

  • apache log analysis tools for multiple virtual hosts?

    I am interested in trying to get a side by side usage comparison of all the virtual hosts being served up by my apache server. In the simplest case, I want to see a list (or bar chart) with each virtual host and the number of requests/traffic on that site. I've been playing around with webalyzer and awstats but I haven't been able to compare multiple virtual hosts in the same infographic. Anyone have any suggestions on tools for doing this (or how I might use the above tools to do so)?

  • How to remove directories from source after copying them?

    I just want to move dirs. I looked successively at mv, cp and rsync, since each tool in turn didn't seem to have the option to remove directories from source after copying them. For instance, mv needs files, not dirs, when src and dst are on different devices: "inter-device move failed: src to dst; unable to remove target: Is a directory" Perhaps the simplest way to do this is by using an additional deletion cmd, although I'd prefer not to use it, since that increases risk of data loss.

    In VLC for Android, i discovered an option to preserve the pitch during faster-than-normal playback: The "requires a fast device" obviously implies that faster playback is more performant when the pitch is changed too. Why is that so? What i've tried: Before posting this question i did some shallow research through Google. According to Wikipedia, there are several methods for faster playback of audio, the "simplest" one (Resampling) changes the pitch.
