  • Check if a String is a double or an int?

    - by user69514
    I have a string for a Date in the form mm/dd, and I need to check if either the month or day was entered as a double public Date(String dateStr){ int slash = 0; //check slash is present try{ slash = dateStr.indexOf('/'); }catch(StringIndexOutOfBoundsException e){ error = "Invalid date format: " + dateStr; } //check if month is a number try{ month = Integer.parseInt(dateStr.substring(0, slash)); //day = Integer.parseInt(dateStr.substring(slash + 1, dateStr.length())); } catch(NumberFormatException e){ System.out.println("Invalid format for input string: " + dateStr.substring(0, slash)); } //check if day is a number try{ day = Integer.parseInt(dateStr.substring(slash + 1, dateStr.length())); } catch(NumberFormatException e){ System.out.println("Invalid format for input string: " + dateStr.substring(slash + 1, dateStr.length())); } //check if month was entered as a double }

  • SQL SERVER – SSMS: Database Consistency History Report

    - by Pinal Dave
    Doctor and Database The last place I like to visit is always a hospital. With the monsoon season starting, intermittent rains, it has become sort of a routine to get a cycle of fever every other year (seriously I hate it). So when I visit my doctor, it is always interesting in the way he quizzes me. The routine question of – “How many days have you had this?”, “Is there any pattern?”, “Did you drench in rain?”, “Do you have any other symptom?” and so on. The idea here is that the doctor wants to find any anomaly or a pattern that will guide him to a viral or bacterial type. Most of the time they get it based on experience and sometimes after a battery of tests. So if there is consistent behavior to your problem, there is always a solution out. SQL Server has its way to find if the server data / files are in consistent state using the DBCC commands. Back to SQL Server In real life, Database consistency check is one of the critical operations a DBA generally doesn’t give much priority. Many readers of my blogs have asked many times, how do we know if the database is consistent? How do I read output of DBCC CHECKDB and find if everything is right or not? My common answer to all of them is – look at the bottom of checkdb (or checktable) output and look for below line. CHECKDB found 0 allocation errors and 0 consistency errors in database ‘DatabaseName’. Above is a “good sign” because we are seeing zero allocation and zero consistency error. If you are seeing non-zero errors then there is some problem with the database. Sample output is shown as below: CHECKDB found 0 allocation errors and 2 consistency errors in database ‘DatabaseName’. repair_allow_data_loss is the minimum repair level for the errors found by DBCC CHECKDB (DatabaseName). If we see non-zero error then most of the time (not always) we get repair options depending on the level of corruption. There is risk involved with above option (repair_allow_data_loss), that is – we would lose the data. Sometimes the option would be repair_rebuild which is little safer. Though these options are available, it is important to find the root cause to the problem. In standard report, there is a report which can show the history of checkdb executed for the selected database. Since this is a database level report, we need to right click on database, click Reports, click Standard Reports and then choose “Database Consistency History” report. The information in this report is picked from default trace. If default trace is disabled or there is no checkdb run or information is not there in default trace (because it’s rolled over), we would get report like below. As we can see report says it very clearly: Currently, no execution history of CHECKDB is available or default trace is not enabled. To demonstrate, I have caused corruption in one of the database and did below steps. Run CheckDB so that errors are reported. Fix the corruption by losing the data using repair option Run CheckDB again to check if corruption is cleared. After that I have launched the report and below is what we would see. If you are lazy like me and don’t want to run the report manually for each database then below query would be handy to provide same report for all database. This query is runs behind the scenes by the report. All I have done is remove the filter for database name (at the last – highlighted). DECLARE @curr_tracefilename VARCHAR(500); DECLARE @base_tracefilename VARCHAR(500); DECLARE @indx INT; SELECT @curr_tracefilename = path FROM sys.traces WHERE is_default = 1; SET @curr_tracefilename = REVERSE(@curr_tracefilename); SELECT @indx  = PATINDEX('%\%', @curr_tracefilename) ; SET @curr_tracefilename = REVERSE(@curr_tracefilename); SET @base_tracefilename = LEFT( @curr_tracefilename,LEN(@curr_tracefilename) - @indx) + '\log.trc'; SELECT  SUBSTRING(CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),TEXTData),36, PATINDEX('%executed%',TEXTData)-36) AS command ,       LoginName ,       StartTime ,       CONVERT(INT,SUBSTRING(CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),TEXTData),PATINDEX('%found%',TEXTData) +6,PATINDEX('%errors %',TEXTData)-PATINDEX('%found%',TEXTData)-6)) AS errors ,       CONVERT(INT,SUBSTRING(CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),TEXTData),PATINDEX('%repaired%',TEXTData) +9,PATINDEX('%errors.%',TEXTData)-PATINDEX('%repaired%',TEXTData)-9)) repaired ,       SUBSTRING(CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),TEXTData),PATINDEX('%time:%',TEXTData)+6,PATINDEX('%hours%',TEXTData)-PATINDEX('%time:%',TEXTData)-6)+':'+SUBSTRING(CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),TEXTData),PATINDEX('%hours%',TEXTData) +6,PATINDEX('%minutes%',TEXTData)-PATINDEX('%hours%',TEXTData)-6)+':'+SUBSTRING(CONVERT(NVARCHAR(MAX),TEXTData),PATINDEX('%minutes%',TEXTData) +8,PATINDEX('%seconds.%',TEXTData)-PATINDEX('%minutes%',TEXTData)-8) AS time FROM::fn_trace_gettable( @base_tracefilename, DEFAULT) WHERE EventClass = 22 AND SUBSTRING(TEXTData,36,12) = 'DBCC CHECKDB' -- AND DatabaseName = @DatabaseName; Don’t get worried about the logic above. All it is doing is reading the trace files, parsing below entry and getting out information for underlined words. DBCC CHECKDB (CorruptedDatabase) executed by sa found 2 errors and repaired 0 errors. Elapsed time: 0 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds.  Internal database snapshot has split point LSN = 00000029:00000030:0001 and first LSN = 00000029:00000020:0001. Hopefully now onwards you would run checkdb and understand the importance of it. As responsible DBAs I am sure you are already doing it, let me know how often do you actually run them on you production environment? • Convert T-SQL function to PL/SQL

    - by llasarov
    can you help me convert following T-SQL funcntion into Oracle. The function converts a string like service|nvretail;language|de;yyyy|2011; to a table. The main problem I have is the usage of the temp table. I could not find any equivalent to it in Oracle. CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[TF_ConvertPara] ( @parastringNVARCHAR(max) ) RETURNS @para TABLE ( [Key] varchar(max), [Value] varchar(max) ) begin DECLARE @NextString NVARCHAR(40) DECLARE @Pos1 INT DECLARE @Pos2 INT DECLARE @NextPos INT DECLARE @Delimiter1 NCHAR=';' DECLARE @Delimiter2 NCHAR='|' if substring(@paraString, len(@paraString) - 1, 1) <> @Delimiter1 SET @paraString = @paraString + @Delimiter1 SET @Pos1 = charindex(@Delimiter1, @paraString) WHILE (@pos1 <> 0) BEGIN SET @NextString = substring(@paraString, 1, @Pos1 - 1) SET @paraString = substring(@paraString, @pos1 + 1, len(@paraString)) SET @pos1 = charindex(@Delimiter1, @paraString) SET @Pos2 = charindex(@Delimiter2, @NextString) if (@Pos2 > 0) begin insert into @para values (substring(@NextString, 1, @Pos2 - 1), substring(@NextString, @Pos2 + 1, len(@NextString))) end END return; end Thank you in advance.

  • Create a date from Credit Card expire in MMYY format

    - by Sophtware
    I need to convert a credit card expire field from MMYY to a date field I can use in a MS SQL query so I can compute when credit cards are expiring in the future. Basically, I need to go from MMYY to MM/DD/YYYY, where the day part could just be '01' (the first of the month). I'm looking for credit cards that are expiring next month from a database. The problem I'm running into is when next month is the first month of the next year. Here's the code I have for determining expired card: (CAST(SUBSTRING(CCExpire,3,2) as int) + 2000 < YEAR(GETDATE())) or ( (CAST(SUBSTRING(CCExpire,3,2) as int) + 2000 = YEAR(GETDATE())) AND (CAST(SUBSTRING(CCExpire,1,2) as int) < MONTH(GETDATE())) ) And here's the code for cards expiring this month: (CAST(SUBSTRING(CCExpire,3,2) as int) + 2000 = YEAR(GETDATE())) AND (CAST(SUBSTRING(CCExpire,1,2) as int) = MONTH(GETDATE())) Now I need code for cards expiring next month...

  • Efficient determination of which strings in an array are substrings of the others?

    - by byte
    In C#, Say you have an array of strings, which contain only characters '0' and '1': string[] input = { "0101", "101", "11", "010101011" }; And you'd like to build a function: public void IdentifySubstrings(string[] input) { ... } That will produce the following: "0101 is a substring of 010101011" "101 is a substring of 0101" "101 is a substring of 010101011" "11 is a substring of 010101011" And you are NOT able to use built-in string functionality (such as String.Substring). How would one efficiently solve this problem? Of course you could plow through it via brute force, but it just feels like there ought to be a way to accomplish it with a tree (since the only values are 0's and 1's, it feels like a binary tree ought to fit somehow). I've read a little bit about things like suffix trees, but I'm uncertain if that's the right path to be going down. Any efficient solutions you can think of?

  • String manipulation appears to be inefficient

    - by user2964780
    I think my code is too inefficient. I'm guessing it has something to do with using strings, though I'm unsure. Here is the code: genome = FASTAdata[1] genomeLength = len(genome); # Hash table holding all the k-mers we will come across kmers = dict() # We go through all the possible k-mers by index for outer in range (0, genomeLength-1): for inner in range (outer+2, outer+22): substring = genome[outer:inner] if substring in kmers: # if we already have this substring on record, increase its value (count of num of appearances) by 1 kmers[substring] += 1 else: kmers[substring] = 1 # otherwise record that it's here once This is to search through all substrings of length at most 20. Now this code seems to take pretty forever and never terminate, so something has to be wrong here. Is using [:] on strings causing the huge overhead? And if so, what can I replace it with? And for clarity the file in question is nearly 200mb, so pretty big.

  • Fast string suffix checking in C# (.NET 4.0)?

    - by ilitirit
    What is the fastest method of checking string suffixes in C#? I need to check each string in a large list (anywhere from 5000 to 100000 items) for a particular term. The term is guaranteed never to be embedded within the string. In other words, if the string contains the term, it will be at the end of the string. The string is also guaranteed to be longer than the suffix. Cultural information is not important. These are how different methods performed against 100000 strings (half of them have the suffix): 1. Substring Comparison - 13.60ms 2. String.Contains - 22.33ms 3. CompareInfo.IsSuffix - 24.60ms 4. String.EndsWith - 29.08ms 5. String.LastIndexOf - 30.68ms These are average times. [Edit] Forgot to mention that the strings also get put into separate lists, but this is not important. It does add to the running time though. On my system substring comparison (extracting the end of the string using the String.Substring method and comparing it to the suffix term) is consistently the fastest when tested against 100000 strings. The problem with using substring comparison though is that Garbage Collection can slow it down considerably (more than the other methods) because String.Substring creates new strings. The effect is not as bad in .NET 4.0 as it was in 3.5 and below, but it is still noticeable. In my tests, String.Substring performed consistently slower on sets of 12000-13000 strings. This will obviously differ between systems and implementations. [EDIT] Benchmark code: http://pastebin.com/smEtYNYN

  • improving data extraction from text file in Java

    - by owca
    I have CSV file with sample data in this form : 220 30 255 0 0 Javascript 200 20 0 255 128 Thinking in java , where the first column is height, second thickness, next three are rgb values for color and last one is title. All need to be treated as separate variables. I have already written my own solution for this, but I'm wondering if there are no better/easier/shorter ways of doing this. Extracted data will then be used to create Book object, throw every Book into array of books and print it with swing. Here's the code : private static Book[] addBook(Book b, Book[] bookTab){ Book[] tmp = bookTab; bookTab = new Book[tmp.length+1]; for(int i = 0; i < tmp.length; i++){ bookTab[i] = tmp[i]; } bookTab[tmp.length] = b; return bookTab; } public static void main(String[] args) { Book[] books = new Book[0]; try { BufferedReader file = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("K:\\books.txt")); String s; while ((s = file.readLine()) != null) { int hei, thick, R, G, B; String tit; hei = Integer.parseInt(s.substring(0, 3).replaceAll(" ", "")); thick = Integer.parseInt(s.substring(4, 6).replaceAll(" ", "")); R = Integer.parseInt(s.substring(10, 13).replaceAll(" ", "")); G = Integer.parseInt(s.substring(14, 17).replaceAll(" ", "")); B = Integer.parseInt(s.substring(18, 21).replaceAll(" ", "")); tit = s.substring(26); System.out.println(tyt+wys+grb+R+G+B); books = addBook(new Book(wys, grb, R, G, B, tyt),books); } file.close(); } catch (IOException e) { //do nothing } }

  • Constraint to array dimension in C language

When I reviewed it this morning, I find it strange that an integer array is defined as int fail[ s_len ]. Does the specification requires dimesion of arrays compile-time constant? How can this code pass the compilation? By the way, my gcc version is 4.4.1. Thanks in advance!

  • Recursion problem; completely lost

    - by timeNomad
    So I've been trying to solve this assignment whole day, just can't get it. The following function accepts 2 strings, the 2nd (not 1st) possibly containing *'s (asterisks). An * is a replacement for a string (empty, 1 char or more), it can appear appear (only in s2) once, twice, more or not at all, it cannot be adjacent to another * (ab**c), no need to check that. public static boolean samePattern(String s1, String s2) It returns true if strings are of the same pattern. It must be recursive, not use any loops, static & global variables. Can use local variables & method overloading. Can use only these methods: charAt(i), substring(i), substring(i, j), length(). Examples: 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "The*xamIs*y" --- true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "Th*mIsEasy*" --- true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "*" --- true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "TheExamIsEasy" --- true 1: TheExamIsEasy; 2: "The*IsHard" --- FALSE I tried comparing the the chars one by one using charAt until an asterisk is encountered, then check if the asterisk is an empty one by comparing is successive char (i+1) with the char of s1 at position i, if true -- continue recursion with i+1 as counter for s2 & i as counter for s1; if false -- continue recursion with i+1 as counters for both. Continue this until another asterisk is found or end of string. I dunno, my brain loses track of things, can't concentrate, any pointers / hints? Am I in the right direction? Also, it's been told that a backtracking technique is to be used to solve this. My code so far (doesn't do the job, even theoretically): public static boolean samePattern(String s1, String s2) { if (s1.equals(s2) || s2 == "*") { return true; } return samePattern(s1, s2, 1); } public static boolean samePattern(String s1, String s2, int i) { if (s1.equals(s2)) return true; if (i == s2.length() - 1) // No *'s found -- not same pattern. return false; if (s1.substring(0, i).equals(s2.substring(0, i))) samePattern(s1, s2, i+1); else if (s2.charAt(i-1) == '*') samePattern(s1.substring(0, i-1), s2.substring(0, i), 1); // new smaller strings. else samePattern(s1.substring(1), s2, i); }

  • Under *nix, how can I find a string within a file within a directory ?

    - by roberto
    Hi all. I'm using ubuntu linux, and I use bash from with a terminal emulator every day for many tasks. I would like to know how to find a string or a substring within a file that is within a particular directory. If I was knew the file which contained my target substring, I would just cat the file and pipe it through grep, thus: cat file | grep mysubstring But in this case, the pesky substring could be anywhere within a known directory. How do I hunt down my substring ?

  • Why does appending "" to a String save memory?

    - by hsmit
    I used a variable with a lot of data in it, say String data. I wanted to use a small part of this string in the following way: this.smallpart = data.substring(12,18); After some hours of debugging (with a memory visualizer) I found out that the objects field smallpart remembered all the data from data, although it only contained the substring. When I changed the code into: this.smallpart = data.substring(12,18)+""; ..the problem was solved! Now my application uses very little memory now! How is that possible? Can anyone explain this? I think this.smallpart kept referencing towards data, but why? UPDATE: How can I clear the big String then? Will data = new String(data.substring(0,100)) do the thing?

  • Write a function that returns the longest palindrome in a given string. e.g "ccddcc" in the string "

    - by Learner
    I thought of a solution but it runs in O(n^2) time Algo 1: Steps: Its a brute force method Have 2 for loops for i = 1 to i less than array.length -1 for j=i+1 to j less than array.length This way you can get substring of every possible combination from the array Have a palindrome function which checks if a string is palindrome so for every substring (i,j) call this function, if it is a palindrome store it in a string variable If you find next palindrome substring and if it is greater than the current one, replace it with current one. Finally your string variable will have the answer Issues: 1. This algo runs in O(n^2) time. Algo 2: Reverse the string and store it in diferent array Now find the largest matching substring between both the array But this too runs in O(n^2) time Can you guys think of an algo which runs in a better time. If possible O(n) time

  • xquery expression to return a link text only if it contains within it a specific string

    - by Arvind
    I want to extract some links from a XML document (links are in same format as on html pages). Now for eg a link is "http://xyz.com/start/tyu/a.html" and another is "http://ert.com/tyu/b.html" while a third link is "http://asdf.com/ghjk/c.html" From the above 3 links (which I have with me using a for clause in a FLWOR expression)...I want only the links which contain within them a string "tyu" to be selected-- I thought of using substring for this, but substring requires start and end positions to be specified- whereas in my scenario, I dont know at which position the desired string will be. How do I do substring matching in such a scenario, i.e. where exact position for occurrence of substring, is not known? I can use XQuery 1.0 for this purpose. Finally, I want to extract the link URL, as well as link text...

  • Get href tags in html data in c#

    - by Nani
    I am using web client class to HTML data from a web page. Now I want to get the complete href tags and there titles from the HTML data. Initially I used loops, Felling inefficient I switched to regExp, but dint got efficient solution. He is the initial code: for (int i = 0; i < htmldata.Length - 5; i++) { if (htmldata.Substring(i, 5) == "href=") { n1 = htmldata.Substring(i + 6, htmldata.Length - (i + 6)).IndexOf("\""); Sublink = htmldata.Substring(i + 6, n1); var absoluteUri = new Uri(baseUri, temp); n2 = htmldata.Substring(i + n1 + 1, htmldata.Length - (i + n1 + 1)).IndexOf("<"); subtitle = htmldata.Substring(i + 6 + n1 + 2, n2 - 7); } } This code is getting some of the links like this. /l.href.replace(new RegExp( /advanced_search?hl=en&q=&hl=en& and titles like this onclick=gbar.qs(this) class=gb2Photos ")+"q="+encodeURIComponent(b)})}i.qs=n;function o(a,b,d,c,f,e){var g=document.getElementById(a);if(g){var Which are absolutely invalid. Please suggest me the correct code for getting valid relative href links and titles. ThankYou.

  • What's the best way to replace the first letter of a string in Java?

    - by froadie
    I'm trying to convert the first letter of a string to lowercase. I know there's a capitalize method, but I want to accomplish the opposite. This is the code I used: value.substring(0,1).toLowerCase() + value.substring(1) Effective, but feels a bit manual. Are there any other ways to do it? Any better ways? Any Java string functions that do it for you? I was thinking of using something like a replace function, but Java's replace doesn't accept an index as a parameter. You have to pass the actual character/substring. Another way I can think of doing it is something like: value.replaceFirst(value.charAt(0), value.charAt(0).toLowerCase()) Except that replaceFirst expects 2 strings, so the value.charAt(0)s would probably need to be replaced with value.substring(0,1)s. Is this any better? Does it matter? Is there any standard way to do this?
