• Apache2 alias in virtual host

  I have multiple virtual host in one server and plan to has some alias setup in one virtualhost. So I add the Alias /foo/ /path/to/foo/ in virtualhost directive,but it has no effect. request of host1/foo/ will return 404. But if I add this to /etc/apache2/mods-available/alias.conf, it works. But the problem is host2 will also share this alias. Is there a way to make the alias work only for host1? B.T.W, I use apache2ctl -l, there's no mod_alias.c listed, weird.

• Is there an IE8 setting or policy to make it work like IE7 with respect to persistent connections?

  I am working with a commercial application running on XP using IIS 5.1. Periodically the application is returning an IIS error "There are too many people accessing the Web site at this time." This is caused by Microsoft artificially limiting the number of connections (10) under IIS 5.1 under Windows XP, but in this case, there is really only one user (albeit a few tabs open at a time). Microsoft suggests you can reduce the problem by turning off HTTP Keep-Alives for that particular web site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262635 If you use IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000 Professional or IIS 5.1 on Microsoft Windows XP Professional, disable HTTP keep-alives in the properties of the Web site. When you do this, a limit of 10 concurrent connections still exists, but IIS does not maintain connections for inactive users. I may do that; however, I'm worried about performance degradation. However, I also notice that IE8 appears to handle this differently than IE7. By default, IE6 and IE7 use 2 persistent connections while IE8 uses 6. Perhaps in this case IE8 itself is generating multiple connections in an attempt to be faster, but those additional connections are overwhelming the artificially limited IIS 5.1 on XP? Assuming that is the case, is there an Internet Explorer option, registry setting, or policy I can set to force IE8 to behave like IE7 with respect to persistent connections? I would not set this for all users, but for the small number of users that used this application, it might solve their intermittent problem until the application can be rehosted on Windows Server 2008.   I am trying to run the following code snippet as part of a tool to gather and log some pertinent system diagnostics. In the second code snipped, I cannot capture stdout. I need to be able to run the batch script with Elevated permissions, so I am looking for a compromise between the functionality of the two. I cannot run the entire calling script in elevated mode due to restrictions from other pieces of functionality. I am looking for any ideas on how to add this output to my log as I am running out of options that are within the scope of basic scripts.

  I did an dist-upgrade on Debian Wheezy yesterday and got an error with syslog-nc-core. I found that i should try to reinstall it and tried but it ended with an error that apache2 isnt configured. I purged it also and when i now try to reinstall i get the error Setting up apache2 (2.4.10-1) ... • Install problems with XSendFile on Ubuntu

Then this code still just provides me with an empty file with 0 bytes: file_path = '/path/to/protected/files/some_file.zip' file_name = 'some_file.zip' response = HttpResponse('', mimetype='application/zip') response['Content-Disposition'] = 'attachment; filename=%s' % smart_str(file_name) response['X-Sendfile'] = smart_str(file_path) return response And there is not in the Apache error log that pertains to XSendFile. • How do I learn IPSec VPN implementation on FreeBSD from pfSense

  I've been trying to figure out a complete working solution for IPSec VPN implementation on FreeBSD but with no luck till now. pfSense seems did a fantastic job on supporting IPSec and even for mobile clients, so I downloaded and installed pfSense hoping to figure out how it works, or at least see some configuration examples, but I couldn't find anything interesting maybe because I'm not familiar with pfSense, so I'd like to ask for help. How pfSense implements IPSec, what tools are used? Where does pfSense store all its configuration files? And since pfSense has its own kernel mods and acts as a different OS, there's no way for us to install it on top of an existing FreeBSD box, and plus that it is such a great project combining those fantastic features, so my question can kinda be extended as: How do we learn from pfSense, and implement its features on top of a regular FreeBSD server?

  I have VPS running Debian 5.0 (I think) and I would like to get it to run PHP files. I was told it needed to be configured with Apache. I tried entering the command apt-get install apache2 php5 libapache2-mod-php5. But there was no change. • Most efficient Way to setup a game server

  I'm running a PHP based game which has over 45 Million members predicted for end of this year (2011) Currently we are on 7.5 Million, this game is being ran on facebook and I am in desperate need to help get this game server as efficient and as powerful as possible. it is a dedicated server with Processor Manufacturer Intel Model i7 920 Frequency 4x 2x 2.66 GHz NIC GigaEthernet RAM 12 GB Hard disk 4 x 1 TB specs. It has apache installed, cPanel, phpMyAdmin, several apache mods and MySQL. The game also runs 47 mysql calls per second per user. Is there any alternatives to the above which could be faster, more efficient etc? I dont mind having to recode the game to fit to it, as long as it maximises our upper limit of members on the game. Thanks Also, is there a way to tell what our maximum limit to players, database calls etc is? Thank you again, hope you guys can help :)

• Android openvpn + zeroconf browser sending mdns query packets over eth0 instead of tap0 interface on wifi

  On an android device, I am connecting to a remote network using openvpn for performing service discovery. WORKING CASE: After the device is camped on 3g/4g and after connecting to remote network by openvpn, when the zeroconf browser is launched, I can see the mdns query packets being send through the tap0 interface resulting into rendering of services on the browser.   I've installed the Shibboleth module for apache on Ubuntu 10.04 using aptitude to install libapache2-mod-shib2 as per https://groups.google.com/group/shibboleth-users/browse_thread/thread/9fca3b2af04d5ca8?pli=1 and enabled the module (I have checked in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled) I then proceeded to secure a directory on the server by placing a .htaccess file with the following directives: AuthType shibboleth ShibRequestSetting requireSession 1 Require valid-user Now - I haven't set up an SSL host yet - and I also haven't set up the IdP - but I would expect that the server would block access to this directory - but I'm getting the content without any problems. I have restarted the apache service and I have no errors in the log files.

• I cannot access Windows Update at all

  I have been unable to access the Windows update site for a couple of weeks now. I just get a message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and saying I have connection problems. Same thing is replicated with any other Microsoft site I try to access. The Automatic Updates also do not work. I can access every other wesbite I've surfed to. I've tried Googling the problem and based on what other site have suggested I have cleared my cache and temp files. I've scanning my hard drive with my antivirus in case I have a virus (nada). I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus (I run Zone Alarm). I've downloaded SpyBot and scanned my drive with that in case something was missed by Zone Alarm (again nada). Based on suggestions from the smart cookies on the Bad Science forum, I've used nslookup to check my translation isn't wonky (got all the info they said I should get). I've also tried navigating there directly using the IP address I was given (nope). I normally access the internet through a 3 mobile broadband connection, but have also tried connecting using a mate's wi-fi connection in case it was something on my mobile modem interferring. I run Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite as my anti-virus/ firewall. Any suggestions?

• What is the main reason of adsl modem/routers dying ?

  The other day my home adsl modem/router (dwg 684t in this case) died. A guy from the telecom company came, brought another so no problem in day to day operation, but he also left this one. Now, I'm interested ... it didn't fall, it wasn't electrocuted ... but it just doesn't work. What could be the problem ? Can they be fixed ? Is it worth it (in which case I would have two which is always nice) ... What are the usual problems that occur with them ? In this case, I can connect to the router, I can see its settings, I just can't connect to the internet. With the new one everything works. Weird. Edit: Additional question: Can those things be fixed ? I mean, is it worth giving it to a local tinker for him to experiment on it ? I'm not looking for a definite opinion, just your personal advice ... (although in the end I think I'm gonna archive it in the "cylinder register")

• Allowing non-admin users to unstick the print spooler

  I currently have an issue where the print que is getting stuck on a central print server (windows server 2008). Using the "Clear all documents" function does not clear it and gets stuck too. I need non-admin users to be able to clear the print cue from there work stations. I have tried using the following winforms program which I created and allows a user to stop the print spooler, delete printer files in the "C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS folder" and then start the print spooler but this functionality requires the program to be runs as an administrator, how can I allow my normal users to execute this program without giving them admin privileges? Or is there another way I can allow normal user to clear the print que on the server? • git : The remote end hung up unexpectedly - too many simultaneous users?

  I asked this first on StackOverflow and I was suggested that I should ask it here: We have a self hosted git server (Gitolite) on a VPS account (CPU:2.68GHz RAM:1824MB). This same VPS is also used to publish our underdevelopment web apps for client demos. (Very little traffic). so the main use of the server is as a Git Server Only. This git server is accessed by a team of 30-40 people for various projects. Our problem is that during the day when 6-7 people are trying to access the server (sometimes same repo) we get frequent error message: ssh: connect to host xxx.xxx.xx.xx port 22: Bad file number fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly After trying for 10-15 minutes it generally succeeds. During early mornings and late nights when there are only 1-2 people, git commands work with 100% success rate. Also I would like to note that if I access the other file hosted on the server through HTTP it works fine. I found a couple of questions on StackOverflow and on other sites regarding this. But most of the people point towards SSH key set up or conflicts between Msysgit and Cygns SSH. However I don't think this is the problem in our case as we get this behavior on Windows (using msysgit only) as well as Mac Machines. Also if it was SSH configuration issue then it shouldn't work at all. But in our case it works after 10-15 minutes. I think in our case it might be too many simultaneous connections to same server (or same repo) or something like that. Does there exists a setting or a conf file that needs to modified to solve this problem? Please help me solve this problem or point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Pritam.

The problem I am having is that the VM cannot start apache on boot. $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed.   I have a task called "Interview person A about topic X". The task's duration is set to 2 hours. The start date of the task should automatically be calculated taking dependencies and resource availabilities into account. My question boils down to: How can I force this task to start and end on the same date? Background: In my case, Microsoft Project sets the start date to a Friday at 5pm. As my working hours are set to 8am to 12am and 1pm to 6pm (Mon-Fri), Microsoft Project "splits up" the task at 6pm on Friday and plans to continue it at 8am on the following Monday. However, it does not make any sense to stop the interview on a Friday and restart it on Monday. Therefore the automatic suggestion is not helpful in this case. That's why I'm looking for a way way to force the task to start and end on the very same day. (In my example, I'd like Microsoft Project to delay the start date of the task until Monday 8am as this is the first time slot in which the task "fits in completely".) By the way: I have lots of such cases... for that reason it would be really great if there was a solution that doesn't just deal with this single special case.)

• Why does HP Update at remote system trigger RDP printing at local system?

  This is obscure. When connected with RDP to another system that has HP Update installed on it, either directly running the HP Update or having the notification pop up to ask if you want to run HP Update causes the local system to try to print something to peculiarly-chosen-local-printer. Case 1: Desktop Win 7 Ult system RDP connected to HP Laptop Win 7 Ult system. When HP Update runs on the laptop a dialog for XPS Writer Save As... appears on Desktop system. Even if you put in a name, nothing gets generated and the dialog repeats. And repeats. Until you (a) close the RDP connection and (b) clean out the queued entries. If the HP Update pops up the request to run the update and you are not at the desk when this happens, there can be dozens of queued requests for this bogus printing. NOTE: the XPS Writer is not selected as a default printer on either system. Case 2: (Different) HP Laptop Win 7 Ult system RDP connected to XP Pro "brand X" desktop system but with HP printer drivers installed. If the request to run HP Update notification pops on the XP system, dozens of attempts to print, in this case to a Versa Check Printer driver, are queued. Dismissing the HP request, closing RDP, and cleaning out the queue are required to stop this. NOTE: the Versa Check Writer is not selected as a default printer on either system. THE QUESTION: What the heck is going on here? Some kind of scripting or COM activity that is misdirected?

• Make laptop boot to external monitor

  Hi all. Heres my setup: Dell 1737 2x Dell U2311H The laptop lid is always closed and is wall mounted behind the monitors. Every time i boot the laptop, i have to open the lid a little until it goes to the win 7 logon screen. Once there, i close the lid and both monitors get detected and the laptop screen switches off. As the laptop is wall mounted how ever, its really tedious to keep opening and closing the lid. Is there any way i can make it default to the external monitors permanently? Any suggestions are welcome, even hardware mods. Im willing to rip apart the laptop to install a switch or something if needs be lol

• vps running out of memory, 200MB free

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out... • Computer won't start after installing new video card

  So, 1 year and 340 days ago I bought a desktop computer. Since then, it has served me well. But lately, I wanted an upgrade, so I bought a new video card. I documented myself about the compatibility, and it is okay. So I opened the case, cleaned up that... dust elemental living inside of it. Unscrewed the plastic thingie on the outside to unscrew the old video card. Because of the stupid arrangement of the ports, I had to unscrew the motherboard to unplug it. So I unscrewed it, removed the old card, put in the new one, moved the motherboard back, screwed it back in, screwed the video card on the holder... thingie, and screwed the plastic thingie back in. Everything went smoothly, nothing had to be forced in/out. I connected the external power supply, closed the computer case, put the tower back in it's place and all the cables back in. When I pressed the power button, the LED turned... some color I can't distinguish. It stayed that way for a second, and then it went off. I tried a bunch of things, including permuting the external power supply arrangement (1 connection, 2 connections and no connections), with no success. And here are some of the specifications: Motherboard manufacturer: Asrock Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 3.0 GHz RAM: 2 x 2GB (had only 1 initially, bought the second plate a bit later) OLD video card: AMD Radeon HD 5450 NEW video card: Gigabyte nVidia GeForce GTX 650 GPU, 1GB GDDR5 128bit PCI-E, Dual-link DVI-Dx2 / HDMI / D-Sub Power supply: 450W + all the requirements I managed to find on the internet are met (+12V 18A or something) More specific information is stored... On that computer. If required, I may open the case again and read the stickers to find more specific information. I can also provide photos if necessary. Any ideas? Suggestions? Something? :|

• Thinkpad laptop heats up more than it used to - what are my options?

  Hi, I have a 3 yr old laptop (Thinkpad T61) which runs seemingly much hotter than it used to. It's not uncomfortable to touch, but I wonder whether I should do something about it. It does get uncomfortable if I have it on my lap (which I rarely need to do). I haven't made any mods to the laptop other than a bigger HD, and I recently cleaned up the inside (superficially - I didn't remove the fan). Are fans items that should be changed regularly? Edit: I use the laptop plugged in 90%+ of the time. Thanks, JDelage PS: I know that a 3-yr old laptop is old tech, but this one works perfectly so....
