  Hi, i was just asked today, but i couldn't answer precisely so that's why i'm asking here :-) There is any book about Firewall design and implementations (Unix environment and C)? For sure, i could recommend TCP/IP books, and what i did, but there is some design decisions, that are not related with TCP/IP. For sure, i said about the netfilter/iptables (RTFSC) but as well we cannot assume that the netfilter/iptables is the best approach since we don't have too many baselines (ok, we could compare it with PF, but again, read source code to understand design decisions is not always the best way). So if anybody knows a book about this theme, please shoot it!

• Arguments to convince to switch from CVS to SVN

  Hi, The UNIX department of my company currently uses CVS as source-version control system. They use it in a very strange way: different repositories for development/testing/production code (for the same project), no one tags anything, weird directory architecture, and so on. The system has been set for ages but now, I have an opportunity to organize a meeting where I have to suggest changes. I'd like to make them change from CVS to SVN (Mercurial or Git might be even better, however I can't really recommand using a system I don't know well, and switching to SVN will already be a great step forward). I don't have much experience with CVS so I can't compare them efficiently: I just know it doesn't support atomic operations and that it is deprecated. What killer arguments would you use to convince my collegues to do the switch ? Thank you very much.

• Most efficient way to remove special characters from string

  I want to remove all special characters from a string. Allowed characters are A-Z (uppercase or lowercase), numbers (0-9), underscore (_), or the dot sign (.). • Console App Mouse-Click X Y Coordinate Detection/Comparison

  I have a game that I am working on in a C# console application, purely as practice before going on to better methods. As opposed to using something such as a Windows Forms App, which has button functionality built in, I am endeavoring to grab the cursor position (which I know how to do) and compare it to a number of area's inside a console application as defined by perhaps pixel location, but I also do not know if there is some sort of built in unit of space other than pixels (this last bit is the part I am unable to figure). P.S. I know this is in general terms, with no code already provided, but I do not feel that it is needed as all I am asking for is a brief explanation of how to grab X Y coordinates inside a console application, and stick them in int variables. • Comparing two xml files

  I have two large xml files. Almost 1.4 mb each. I want to compare them and see the differing part. I am using linux. Is there any free tool which can do this for me ? Or any other technique ? I used "diff" command in linux and tried to output the result in another file. (diff file1.xml file2.xml result.xml) But the resulted file showed "Could not parse the xml". However it showed something on screen. I would like the differ part to be stored somewhere if possible. (or atleast I should be able to see it properly) Thanks Ragini

• C# string equality operator returns false, but I'm pretty sure it should be true... What?!

  I'm trying to write a unit test for a piece of code that generates a large amount of text. I've run into an issue where the "expected" and "actual" strings appear to be equal, but Assert.AreEqual throws, and both the equality operator and Equals() return false. The result of GetHashCode() is different for both values as well. However, putting both strings into text files and comparing with DiffMerge tells me they're the same. Additionally, using Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes() on both values and then using SequenceEquals to compare the resulting byte arrays returns true. The values are 34KB each, so I'll hold off putting them here for now. Any ideas? I'm completely stumped.

• Java Swing architecture for flipping through JPane based views

  Hi all, I have done a couple of simple swing based apps with static layout, but now I've run into a problem while trying to create an app containing multiple views which are changed by pressing appropriate navigational button. You could compare the idea to a website so that every view has buttons to access certain other views but this would work inside a single JFrame. I've found that maybe CardLayout (Cardlayout example) might be appropriate solution for this kind of structure, but I'm unable to figure out a way to switch the views from the buttons which are inside of the JPanes that I've implemented in their separate classes, Of course one way would be to instantiate everything in the parent class like in the small java tutorial example, but this isn't quite clean nor modular for multiple views, isn't it. How can this be implemented so that I can access the view switching method?

• How to evaluate "enterprise" platforms?

  Hi all, I'm tasked with evaluating an "enterprise" platform for the next-gen version of a product. We're currently considering two "types" of platforms - RAD (workflow engine, integrated UI, small cores of "technology plugins" to the workflows, automatic persisting of state...) like SalesForce.com / Service-Now.com and "cloud based" (EC2 / AppEngine...). While I have a few ideas on where to start, I'd like your opinions - how would you evaluate platforms for an enterprise suite of products? What factors would you consider? How would you eliminate weak options quickly enough to be able to concentrate on the few strong ones? Also interesting is how would you compare enterprise RAD (proven technology, quick to develop - but tends to look "the same as the competition") to cloud-based technology (lots of "buzz", not that many competitors - easy to justify to management, but probably lacking (?) enterprise tools and experience). As said before - I have a few ideas, but would like to see some answers before I post mine so I wouldn't drive the discussion to a specific place. RB.

• Why does the android emulator camera stop unexpectedly?

  I am using Android 2.2 (API Level 8). The camera is enabled in the manifest. When I try the camera icon provided by the emulator model, it runs for a few seconds showing a gray box moving around a black and white checkerboard, then dies with the error message: Sorry! The application Camera (process com.android.camera) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Trying again, of course, doesn't help. I am using the provided emulator camera to compare behavior with a camera application I am working on. Why does the android emulator camera stop unexpectedly?

• How to sort an NSMutableArray of objects by a member of its class, that is an int or float

  I have a class (from NSObject) that contains: NSString name int position float speed I then create an array (NSMutableArray) of objects from this class. I would like to then sort the array by the 'speed' value, which is a float. I initially has the float value as an NSNumber and the int as NSInteger, and I was successfully sorting with: [myMutableArray sortUsingFunction:compareSelector context:@selector(position)]; where myMutableArray is my array of objects. here is the function: static int compareSelector(id p1, id p2, void *context) { SEL methodSelector = (SEL)context; id value1 = [p1 performSelector:methodSelector]; id value2 = [p2 performSelector:methodSelector]; return [value1 compare:value2]; } Now that I am using int instead of NSInteger, the above code does not work. Is there a more low-level command that I should be using to execute the sort? Thank!

  Sorry for bad English :( Suppose i can preliminary organize recipes and ingredients data in any way. How can i effectively conduct search of recipes by user-provided ingredients, preferably sorted by max match - so, first going recipes that use maximum of provided ingridients and do not contain any other ingrs, after them recipes that uses less of provided set and still not any other ingrs, after them recipes with minimum additional requirements and so on? All i can think about is represent recipe ingridients like bitmasks, and compare required bitmask with all recipes, but it is obviously a bad way to go. And related things like Levenstein distance i don't see how to use here. I believe it should be quite common task...

• TFS: How do I view .cs files in the VS IDE when viewing details of a shelveset?

  For our code review process we open the details of a shelveset to see all files that have been worked on. Right clicking and choosing "Compare" works great for existing ( modified ) files. But, when a file has been added I just want to view the file. Double clicking ( or right click - view ) opens .cs ( and .sql )files in notepad. When I try to open a .PRC file ( extension for our stored procedures ) I get a prompt that allows me to choose what program to use for viewing. Does anyone know how to get this prompt to show up for .cs files ( and all other files, for that matter ) Thanks!   I can't think of any reasons why one is better than the other. Compare these two implementations: public class MyClass { public myClass(string fileName) { // some code... } } as opposed to: public class MyClass { private myClass(){} public static Create(string fileName) { // some code... } } There are some places in the .Net framework that use the static method to create instances. At first I was thinking, it registers it's instances to keep track of them, but regular constructors could do the same thing through the use of private static variables. What is the reasoning behind this style?

• what \bin to add to system Path env var from a jdk

  If you install the latest java 1.6 jdk, without installing the public jre option, you end up having two \bin dirs with java.exe: %JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin %JAVA_HOME%\bin if you compare those dirs, there are a few files that are identical (java.exe etc), and a bunch that are either in one or the other. So far I used to add %JAVA_HOME%\bin to my Path environment var, but now I am wondering, does it make a difference? Is there any side effect to choose one or the other? And would not be much cleaner if the installation had only one java.exe and \bin folder?

• BASH: Checking for environment variables

  Hi folks, I am trying to check the value of an environment variable and depending on the value do certain things and it works fine as long as the variable is set. When it isn't though I get a whole bunch of errors (as BASH is trying to compare the string I specify with an undefined variable, I guess) I tried implementing an extra check to prevent it happening but no luck.   HI All, If I have a PivotTable in Excel 2007 with a date field. I understand that I can group the date by day, month or even year using Group Field (Years & Months). • how to diff / align Python lists using arbitrary matching function?

  I'd like to align two lists in a similar way to what difflib.Differ would do except I want to be able to define a match function for comparing items, not just use string equality, and preferably a match function that can return a number between 0.0 and 1.0, not just a boolean. So, for example, say I had the two lists: L1 = [('A', 1), ('B', 3), ('C', 7)] L2 = ['A', 'b', 'C'] and I want to be able to write a match function like this: def match(item1, item2): if item1[0] == item2: return 1.0 elif item1[0].lower() == item2.lower(): return 0.5 else: return 0 and then do: d = Differ(match_func=match) d.compare(L1, L2) and have it diff using the match function. Like difflib, I'd rather the algorithm gave more intuitive Ratcliff-Obershelp type results rather than a purely minimal Levenshtein distance.

• Generate a collection of changed lines between two revisions of a file using Java

  I am writing an eclipse plugin which needs to be able to determine which lines of a file have changed compared to a different version of the same file. Is there an existing class or library which I can use for this task? The closest I have found is org.eclipse.compare.internal.merge.DocumentMerger. This can be used to find the information I need but is in an internal package so is not suitable for me to use. I could copy/paste the source of this class and adapt it to my requirements. However, I am hoping there is an existing library to handle textual comparisons.

• How to convert Beautiful Soup Unicode into a decimal value?

  I'm trying to Use python's Beautiful Soup Library to grab a bunch of divs from an html file, and from there get the string - which is a money value - that's inside the div. Then remove the dollar sign and convert it to a decimal so that I can use a greater than and less than conditional statement to compare values. I have googled the heck out of it and can't seem to come up with a way to convert this unicode string into a decimal value. I really could use some help here. How do I convert unicode into a decimal value?   We are currently implementing the commercial Infor PM (Performance Management) package as a business intelligence tool. Infor PM website It is apparently used by over 1,000 companies around the world, but I have found scant information about it on the net except for what's on their own website. It covers the whole range of data warehousing and BI functions with: an OLAP environment an ETL tool a report writer (called Application Studio) an add-on to Excel to connect to the data in the cubes through a pivot table etc Does anyone have any experience with using this package? How does it compare to the big players in BI (Cognos, Microsoft SSAS, Business Objects, etc). Any pitfalls I should know about? On the other hand, does it do anything better than its competitors?

• Experiences with OpenLaszlo?

  In a related question, I asked about Web Development. I came across something called OpenLaszlo yesterday and thought it looked interesting for doing some website development. The site has a bunch of good information on it and they've got some nice tutorials and such, but being a total novice (as far as web development goes), I'm wondering whether anyone here would recommend this. As I stated in my other question, this is a new world for me and there are a lot of directions I could go. Can you compare/contrast this and other web development you've done? • How to verify if two tables have exactly the same data?

  Basically we have one table (original table) and it is backed up into another table (backup table); thus the two tables have exactly the same schema. At the beginning both tables (original table and backup table) contains exactly the same set of data. After sometime for some reason I need to verify whether dataset in the original table has changed or not. In order to do this I have to compare the dataset in the original table against the backup table. Let's say the original table has the following schema: `create table LemmasMapping ( lemma1 int, lemma2 int, index ix_lemma1 using btree (lemma1), index ix_lemma2 using btree (lemma2) )` How could I achieve the dataset comparision? Update: the table does not have a primary key. It simply stores mappings between two ids.

• Is it good practice to initialize array in C/C++?

  I recently encountered a case where I need to compare two files (golden and expected) for verification of test results and even though the data written to both the files were same, the files does not match. On further investigation, I found that there is a structure which contains some integers and a char array of 64 bytes, and not all the bytes of char array were getting used in most of the cases and unused fields from the array contain random data and that was causing the mismatch. This brought me ask the question whether it is good practice to initialize the array in C/C++ as well, as it is done in Java?

• How can I resolve naming conflict in given precompiled libraries?

  I'm linking two different libraries that have functions with exactly same name (it's opengl32.lib and libgles_cm.lib - OpenGL ES emulation under Win32 platform), and I want to be able to specify, which version I'm calling. I'm porting a game to OpenGL ES, and what I want to achieve, is a split-screen rendering, where left side is an OpenGL version, and right side is a ES version. To produce the same result, they will recieve slightly different calls, and I'll be able to visually compare them, effectively finding visual artifacts. It worked perfectly with OpenGL/DirectX at the same window, but now the problem is that both versions imports the functions with the same name, like glDrawArrays, and only one version is imported. Unfortunately, I don't have sources of any of that libraries. Is there a way to... I dont' know, wrap one library into additional namespace before linking (with calls like ES::glDrawArrays), somehow rename some of functions or do anything else? I'm using microsoft compiler now, but if there will be solution with another one (GCC/ICC), I'll switch to it.

• MS Access vs SQL Server and others ? Is it worth taking a db server when less than 2 Gb and only 20

  After my experiment with MSAccess vs MySQL which shows MS Access hugely overperforming Mysql odbc insert by a factor 1000% before I would do the same experiment with SQL Server I searched for some other's people and found this one: http://blog.nkadesign.com/2009/access-vs-sql-server-some-stats-part-1/ which says "As a side note, in this particular test, Access offers much better raw performance than SQL Server. In more complex scenarios it’s very likely that Access’ performance would degrade more than SQL Server, but it’s nice to see that Access isn’t a sloth." So is worth bother with some db server when data is less than 2 Gb and users are about 20 (knowing that MS Access theorically supports up to 255 concurrent users though practically it's around a dozen concurrent users only). Are there any real world studies that really compare MS Access with other db in these specific use case ? Because professionaly speaking I keep hearing people systematically recommend DB server from people who have never used Access just because they think DB Server can only perform better in every case which I used to think myself I confess.
