• Cornerstone vs Versions for Mac OS X

  I've been using svn on the command line for 5+ years, but I'm thinking of switching to GUI. The two kings of Mac subversion apps seem to be Versions and Cornerstone. Most of the reviews/comments I've seen comparing the two are from way back in 2008, when Cornerstone was first released. It's now 2010, and both apps have undergone significant changes. I've been running trial copies of both apps for the past week, and I still can't make up my mind. Which would you recommend and why?

• CakePHP Shell issue with my directory structure

  I have structured my Cake files in the following way /cakes /2_3 /app /Console /cake.php /apps /www.website1.com /Console /HelloShell.php /Controllers /etc... /www.website2.com /Console /Controllers /etc... I am getting an error "Error: Shell class HelloShell could not be found." I have added "cakes/2_3/app/Console" to my PATH, and I am running cake from inside www.website1.com. Current Paths: -app: www.website1.com -working: apps\www.website1.com -root: apps -core: cakes\2_3\lib Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

  A Book showed an example where ( when using IIS7 ) the following module was configured such that it would be used by any web application ( even by non-asp.net apps ) running on a web site. But: A) if this module is invoked for non-asp.net application, then how or why would HttpApplication object still be created, since non-asp.net apps don’t run in the context of CLR ( and thus Asp.Net runtime also won’t run )? b) Assuming HttpApplication object is also created for non-asp.net apps, why then does the code inside Init() event handler have to check for whether HttpApplication object actually exists? Why wouldn’t it exist? Isn’t this HttpApplication object which actually instantiates Http module instance? • Java 1.4 to Java 6 migration

  Hi, I have some enterprise apps running on Java 1.4. They mostly invoke Stored Proces on DB, Parse XML files (Not too large files, at the most few megs), read/write from/to disk. We have a requirement where now we have to migrate these apps to Java 6(No code changes to be done at all). My questions: If I dont recompile my apps under Java 6 and just run them with it, will it work fine (I know they 'should'). But if somebody thinks other way round, could you kindly share your thoughts please? More important question is - Will it have any perfomance impact?. As in, App compiled on 1.4 and running on 1.6 vs App compiled and running on 1.6. Is 1.6 gonna do any bytecode optimization for the same old peace of code compared to 1.4? Many Thanks js

• When is a webapp called Beta, alpha, pre-alpha, or none

  I've come across many apps on the web that call themselves Beta. I've come across other apps that had an alpha designation. I've even come across some that called themselves pre-alpha, whatever that means (if you know please clarify). Then I've come across some really bad webapps that shouldn't have left the developer's computer and they didn't have any beta designations. I've also seen some well built apps that called themselves Beta, including Stack Exchange (the mother site of SO) which I believe is very full featured to be called a Beta. I'm a little confused. It seems people are doing it at their whims. Is there an established rule or a checklist that can help decide what stage an app is in (beta, alpha, pre-alpha, or none)? P.S. Please feel free to retag as appropriate.

  Till date I have used only VB6 Professional for developing apps. But recently I have joined a company which owns VS 6 Enterprise (or some such version) I was just exploring what is available in VS 6 Ent. and I found Visual Modeler. The tutorial provided with it is not good enough. I was wondering if there is any detailed tutorial(s) for Visual Modeler? Is Visual Modeler a cut down version of Rational Rose? I have never used such a tool for developing apps. What are the benefits of developing apps like this? The document claims that one can speed up development and modifications of VB6 & VC++ 6 applications. How true is this claim? My company also has Ration Rose 6. Which is better Rational Rose 6 or Visual Modeler that comes with VS 6 Ent.?

• In what areas might the use of F# be more appropriate than C#?

  Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#.   Hi, I have a projects with several large apps and where settings and apps files are split. directory structure goes something like that: project_name __init__.py apps __init__.py app1 app2 3rdparty __init__.py lib1 lib2 settings __init__.py installed_apps.py path.py templates.py locale.py ... urls.py every app is like that __init__.py admin __init__.py file1.py file2.py models __init__.py model1.py model2.py tests __init__.py test1.py test2.py views __init__.py view1.py view2.py urls.py how to use a sphinx to autogenerate documentation for that? I want something like that for each in settings module or INSTALLED_APPS (not starting with django.* or 3rdparty.*) give me a auto documentation output based on docstring and autogen documentation and run tests before git commit btw. I tried doing .rst files by hand with .. automodule:: module_name :members: but is sucks for such a big project, and it does not works for settings Is there an autogen method or something? I am not tied to sphinx, is there a better solution for my problem?

• Is there a best-practice approach for internationalization of an application?

  We need to have our apps be translated into other languages. This entails renaming the .text properties of our visible controls as well as other literals found within our apps to whatever language we need to translate into. Is this something that can easily be accomplished with .resx files? I was thinking of creating a master resx key/value list where the key would be the fully qualified name of the control/variable/constant etc. and then refactor our apps to look into this file to get their values based on the cultureinfo found at runtime? Is there a standard or simpler approach to this problem?

• I do not write tests. Am I stupid?

  I've done a little bit of reading on unit testing and TDD, and I've never seriously considered writing tests to such a precise extent. Granted, I am not working on any projects that are ridiculously huge. If all I build are small apps, am I stupid for not writing tests? Edit: To clarify, when I say "small apps", I mean apps that are not going to control a persons life and/or their belongings. I generally build things that are supposed to make peoples lives easier and to make them more efficient.

  I have been reading some django tutorial and it seems like all the view functions have to go in a file called "views.py" and all the models go in "models.py". I fear that I might end up with a lot of view functions in my view.py file and the same is the case with models.py. Is my understanding of django apps correct? Django apps lets us separate common functionality into different apps and keep the file size of views and models to a minimum? For example: My project can contain an app for recipes (create, update, view, and search) and a friend app, the comments app, and so on. Can I still move some of my view functions to a different file? So I only have the CRUD in one single file?

  I am newbie to Android DBUS, recently I was informed that I need to use DBUS to implement Bluetooth in Android, from DBUS documentation I see DBUS is used for communication medium between two applications. In Android apps -apps communication is through intents, if so why do we need DBUS for Bluetooth ? Is that DBUS serves as communication medium for networking (IP) between two apps since it is built over sockets? Please correct me if my understanding is wrong, any more information on DBUS along with Bluetooth implementation in Android is appreciated. Thanks.

  Let's suppose you're an IT student with a basic knowledge of C++ and C#. Let's suppose that you want to design apps that: need to deliver some performance like archivers, cryptographic algorithms, codecs make use of some system calls have a gui and you want to learn an Api that will enable you to write apps like those described earlier and: is mainstream is future proof entitles you to find a decent job is easy enough - I mean easy like VCL, not easy like winapi So, making these assumptions, what Api will you choose? MFC, WPF, other? I really like VCL and QT, but they're not mainstream and I think few employers will want you to write apps in QT or Visual C++ Builder... Thanks for answers.

Question: Let say I have class A,B,C and D now class A has some piece of code which I need to have in class B,C and D so I am extending class A in class B, class C, and class D Now how can I access the function of class A in other classes, do I need to create an object of class A and than access the function of class A or as am extending A in other classes than I can internally call the function using this parameter. If possible I would really appreciate if someone can explain this concept with code sample explaining how the logic flows.

  Hello, I have a unique issue that I need advice on. I've been writing asp.net apps with SQL Server back ends for the past 10 years. During that time, I have also written some PHP apps, but not many. I'm going to be porting some of my asp.net apps to PHP and have run into a bit of an issue. In the Asp.net world, it's generally understood that when accessing any databases, using views or stored procedures is the preferred way of doing so. I've been reading some PHP/MySQL books and I'm beginning to get the impression that utilizing stored procedures in mysql is not advisable. I hesitate in using that word, advisable, but that's just the felling I get. So, the advice I'm looking for is basically, am I right or wrong? Do PHP developers use stored procedures at all? Or, is it something that is shunned? Thanks in advance.

  I'm writing a service (say, service.com) that provides a REST API to external apps running inside of IFrames. (These apps are hosted from domains outside the service.com). I'm planning a javascript client library for the apps to make pure-javascript requests to the service.com REST API -- basically using postMessage and some ad-hoc encapsulation of my API calls to get messages back and forth across frames (from the outside-app.com IFrame -- service.com REST API, and back to the IFrame with a response). My question: is there any robust, general-purpose javascript library to accomplish the kind of cross-domain REST request proxying I need, or should I just hack it from scratch?

• Visual Studio Editor, MEF in-Depth

  I have been having difficulty simply writing a Visual Studio Editor Extension with MEF (Managed Extensiblity Framework). I thank those who answered my previous question, as they helped me know that I need to work with MEF. I've been trying to learn MEF for the Visual Studio Editor from MSDN's page, Extending the Editor, but it appears that I have a hard time understanding it. Can anyone provide strong resource or tutorials in addressing problem such as using the right ContentTypeDefintion (IGlyphFactory, TextMarkTag, etc...), and what is a ITagger. I need to understand these things, as most of the walkthrough only extending the text, such as only using the "spans" functionality, while I need to use "selection" methods and use MouseEventHandlers. Does anyone know an example similiar to my example, or references can tell me something about MEF's for VS editor in-depth?

• Using installshield to replace a same-versioned DLL in the GAC

  We recently put out an update of one of our apps with a "test" DLL from a third party. The third party does not update their assembly versions on the dll's, only the file versions, so multiple apps can reference different "versions" of it. However, the GAC still allows us to keep the newest version, because it also checks the file version which is always updated. What happened is we were not ready to release this DLL, but it got out there on some customer machines. I would like to put our current live version back out there, but it has an older file version (and the same assembly version) as the test DLL. We have multiple apps referencing this DLL, so I can't simply delete it and drop in the new one. Is there a way to replace the DLL in the GAC? I'm using installshield 2009. Perhaps some sort of custom action upon install?

  When I open the help (.chm) application, I could see table of contents. By default, the first entry in the file is selected, however I couldn't see the corresponding page data. Instead, I see "This program cannot display the web page" (the default error message that comes in IE7).The page is displayed only when I click on any of the contents on the left side. Is there a way of showing the page by default without clicking on the entry? The following code is the .hhp file. • WPF/.NET data access models - resource recommendations

  We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? General advice to minimize the time underwater

• Project design / FS layout for large django projects

  What is the best way to layout a large django project? The tutuorials provide simple instructions for setting up apps, models, and views, but there is less information about how apps and projects should be broken down, how much sharing is allowable/necessary between apps in a typical project (obviously that is largely dependent on the project) and how/where general templates should be kept. Does anyone have examples, suggestions, and explanations as to why a certain project layout is better than another? I am particularly interested in the incorporation of large numbers of unit tests (2-5x the size of the actual code base) and string externalization / templates.
