• Can I turn off global menu only in Nautilus?

  According to post #15 of this Ubuntu Forums thread about Nautilus being slow, turning off global menu speeds Nautilus up significantly. This is certainly true for me, as running Nautilus as root makes it a few times (!) faster (with no gnome-scripts installed, cache cleared, Dropbox turned off). Now, I like the global menu--but I also want Nautilus to be fast! Is there a way to turn off the global menu only for Nautilus?

• Trying to find resources to learn how to test software [closed]

  First off, yes this is a general question, and I'd be perfectly happy to move this to another portion of SE, but I didn't see a more fitting sub. Basically, I am hoping a more experienced QA tester can come along and really fill in some basics for me. So far, websites seem to be sparse in terms of explaining languages involved, basic practices, etc. So, I'm sorry in advance if this is too general, but towards the end of this post I ask some specific questions if it's just absolutely unacceptable to speak in general terms. I just landed a position as Junior Systems and QA Engineer with a social media startup. Their QA and testing is almost nonexistent, so if I do a good job, I imagine I'll find a lot of bugs and have a secure role in the business. I'm pretty good with the systems aspect of my role, but I need to learn more about the QA and testing aspects. We run hardware that's touchscreen based - the user can use and interact with the devices. So, in terms of my QA role, in the short term, I need to build scripts to test the hardware/software as a 'user' to try to uncover bugs. First off, what language should these scripts be written in? Does anyone have some examples? What about the longer term 'automated testing'? I'm familiar with regression testing as the developer adds in new features, sure, but the 50,000 other types of testing, not so much. Most of our hardware runs dotnet/C# code, with some of the servers running Java - but I don't expect to need to run tests on the Java side at this point. I hope to meet with one developer today and try to get a good idea of the output from the hardware so that I can 'mock' this data that gets sent to servers, to try to bugtest. Eventually, we will be moving the hardware to be closer to where I live and work, so that I can test virtually and on real hardware. So a lot of the bugs we're dealing with now are like this: the Local Server, which kiosks report their data to gets updated from the kiosks, but the remote server does not. Or, vis versa when the user registers on a kiosk, the remote server updates but the local server does not. But yeah, without much more detail, I imagine a lot of this info isn't helpful. I've bought a book "How Google Tests Software", but it's really a book more about 'how their software testing is different from Microsoft'. It doesn't teach how to test so much as why their methods are better. Does anyone have a good book that I can buy? An ebook maybe? My local Barnes and Noble kinda had a terrible selection. I also figure a book from 2005 is not necessarily that good either.

• Map a Network Drive from XP to Windows 7

  We’ve received a lot of questions about mapping a drive from XP to Windows 7 to access data easily. Today we look at how to map a drive in Windows 7, and how to map to an XP drive from Windows 7. With the new Homegroup feature in Windows 7, it makes sharing data between computers a lot easier. But you might need to map a network drive so you can go directly into a folder to access its contents. Mapping a network drive may sound like “IT talk”, but the process is fairly easy. Map Network Drive in Windows 7 Note: All of the computers used in this article are part of the same workgroup on a home network. In this first example we’re mapping to another Windows 7 drive on the network. Open Computer and from the toolbar click on Map Network Drive. Alternately in Computer you can hit “Alt+T” to pull up the toolbar and click on Tools \ Map Network Drive. Now give it an available drive letter, type in the path or browse to the folder you want to map to. Check the box next to Reconnect at logon if you want it available after a reboot, and click Finish. If both machines aren’t part of the same Homegroup, you may be prompted to enter in a username and password. Make sure and check the box next to Remember my credentials if you don’t want to log in every time to access it. The drive will map and the contents of the folder will open up. When you look in Computer, you’ll see the drive under network location. This process works if you want to connect to a server drive as well. In this example we map to a Home Server drive. Map an XP Drive to Windows 7 There might be times when you need to map a drive on an XP machine on your network. There are extra steps you’ll need to take to make it work however. Here we take a look at the problem you’ll encounter when trying to map to an XP machine if things aren’t set up correctly. If you try to browse to your XP machine you’ll see a message that you don’t have permission. Or if you try to enter in the path directly, you’ll be prompted for a username and password, and the annoyance is, no matter what credentials you put in, you can’t connect. To solve the problem we need to set up the Windows 7 machine as a user on the XP machine and make them part of the Administrators group. Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Under Computer Management expand Local Users and Groups and click on the Users folder. Right-click an empty area and click New User. Add in the user credentials, uncheck User must change password at next logon, then check Password never expires then click Create. Now you see the new user you created in the list. After the user is added you might want to reboot before proceeding to the next step.   Next we need to make the user part of the Administrators group. So go back into Computer Management \ Local Users and Groups \ Groups then double click on Administrators. Click the Add button in Administrators Properties window. Enter in the new user you created and click OK. An easy way to do this is to enter the name of the user you created then click Check Names and the path will be entered in for you. Now you see the user as a member of the Administrators group. Back on the Windows 7 machine we’ll start the process of mapping a drive. Here we’re browsing to the XP Media Center Edition machine. Now we can enter in the user name and password we just created. If you only want to access specific shared folders on the XP machine you can browse to them. Or if you want to map to the entire drive, enter in the drive path where in this example it’s “\\XPMCE\C$” –Don’t forget the “$” sign after the local drive letter. Then login… Again the contents of the drive will open up for you to access. Here you can see we have two drives mapped. One to another Windows 7 machine on the network, and the other one to the XP computer.   If you ever want to disconnect a drive, just right-click on it and then Disconnect. There are several scenarios where you might want to map a drive in Windows 7 to access specific data. It takes a little bit of work but you can map to an XP drive from Windows 7 as well. This comes in handy where you have a network with different versions of Windows running on it. • When starting or log off/on, add'l panels show and some panel applets are duplicated

  After upgrading to 12.04 Gnome Classic amd64,every time I log on a new additional blank panel appears on the top and bottom panels - which I delete every time. In addition, the default panel applets are duplicated in the original panels. Also the panels in the second screen are empty (in addition to the wallpaper being hidden). Update: As suggested by fossfreedomm I created a new user and the same behavior occurred. I increased the height of the panels (2436) and the added panels did not change. If I don't remove the added panels and log off/on I get still another - they accumulate. If I switch user instead of logoff/logon, the add'l panel do not appear.

• How do I consistently activate USB speakers

  I have a pair of Ricco USB speakers. As these are external, I sought to use them with 11.10. They are recognised by 'aplay -l' and Pulseaudio- I have selected them, but, have to reset the volume, every time I log on. I can also only recieve feedback and sound from apps and programs- like Kaffeine- on this boosted volume- I cannot get System Sounds, like logon or logoff. I have tried the alsamixer install that used to work, to no effect. Is their an app that I should be trying or is this feat impossible ? I have tried to delete all the files in .pulse and rebooting or just deletion of the entire .purge directory, as Michael K suggested- neither work as the directory is automatically rewritten on reboot. Ideas?

  I want to be able to run openbox as my window manager in GNOME. If I install openbox, I get the additional choices at the GDM login window of a 'GNOME/Openbox' and an 'openbox session'. If I log in with the 'openbox session', it starts openbox successfully. However, if I log in using the 'GNOME/Openbox' session so that I can run GNOME but just replace metacity with openbox, I find that openbox does not start, and that metacity is managing my application windows. It looks something is not working in the GNOME/Openbox session in 10.04 (and possibly other versions of Ubuntu). I know that I can manually replace metacity with openbox by typing 'openbox --replace', but I want to know the correct way of starting openbox in a GNOME environment automatically at logon.

• Ubuntu 12.04, web cam light flashing

  Have been running Ubuntu on my Compaq C757 reliably since 9.10. Currently running a fresh install of 12.04 LTS. Somewhere during my regular updates, my webcam started flashing its power light. Light flashes from logon screen all throughout my session. I am not running Google Chrome but chromium and firefox. Webcam works normally whenever I run Cheese webcam booth, light comes on solid and webcam works normally. I close out of Cheese, webcam shuts off, and then the light starts blinking again. My system is dual boot, when I boot into Windows 7, webcam does not exhibit this problem. I suspect issue may be related to new laptop power management settings in kernel based on research on the web of similar problems, but I do not know how to instruct it to treat webcam differently.

  as a new linux user, used Ubuntu 12.10, I tried several tweaks with the SMB shares. I followed this tutorial to mount permanently 4 SMB shares from my local NAS. To resume, I : edit /etc/fstab added a line like : //servername/sharename /media/windowsshare cifs credentials=/home/ubuntuusername/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 created a credentials file for security reasons in my home folder (explained in the tutorial) ~/.smbcredentials It work perfectly, they are automounted on each reboot, but when I logon, I all the time get 4 file explorer open with each share. It is possible to avoid these file explorer window to be opened on every reboot ? I guess it's related to X or via a explicit deny or these graphical mount, but I don't have any clues on how to proceed Thank you for your time,

• No Launcher or bars on desktop when running from a VPS

  I'm using tightVNC on Ubuntu 12.10 and can see and change the desktop background pic. I can also press f3 to get a file viewer. But there is no topbar or left side launcher. I do not think its an nvidia problem because I'm using a VPS and I logon remotely. I've tried so many variations of /root/.vnc/xstartup such as gnome-session &, or gnome-session –-session=gnome-classic &, my head is spinning. I've seen other people have this issue and was wondering if anyone solved it.

• installation password

  I just updated to ubuntu 11.10 and am getting "Your authentication attempt was unsuccessful." I am the only user and am the Administrator, during login on my keyring i set to logon automatically, but it still askes me for my password. So i put in my old one and it works. But when i go to install apps it asks again and nothing works! Also if i go to user accounts and try to unlock or change my password it won't let me! It says under password "None" so what's going on?! I'm new to Ubuntu! Help!

Is there a way to prevent Ubuntu One from changing its startup value? I want it to stay disabled. I haven't found anything relevant in Ubuntu One's settings dialog.

• Are these hacking attempts or something less sinister?

  I just had a look through our web server error logs, and Terminal services is reporting: "Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated." Hundreds of times, every 10.5 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 minutes, once at 2pm yesterday and once again at about 1am this morning. We CURRENTLY have RDP open to the outside, as I am just completing the setup and now and then I/Others need to jump on from an outside office/location (VPN isn't an option) As these are so regular, am I right in assuming that they may be the result of some sort of dictionary attack? or could something like an internal admin's hung session cause such a mass of events? (Win Server 2008 R2)

• Chameleon effect not working after update

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 since it came out and so far didn't have any problems with it. But after I updated (via Update Manager) it yesterday, after every reboot, the launcher color defaults to a blue dash, workspace and trash icon and the rest is black. If I set the wallpaper again manually, then it changes color as its supposed to (chameleon). Any idea why this is? Its really annoying to change your wallpaper every time you logon just to get the "normal" launcher. EDIT The chameleon effect works perfectly for notifications. Only the Launcher and Dash are not changing the color. Thanks.

• How to use tscon on Windows7?

  I need to run overnight automation testing using RFT and IE on Windows7 virtual machine. I found that restarting the Windows box before the testing starts helps. I am moving the production environment from Windows XP to Windows 7. RFT used to complain when running RFT scripts that CRFCN0557E: Activation failed when running under a Terminal Services environment. This may be caused by using a minimized terminal window - try playing back without minimizing the terminal window (it does not need to be full-screen). Running tscon.exe 0 /dest:console prior starting any RFT script fix the error on Windows XP. But not on Windows7. I did some research and was trying for hours to fix that but nothing helped. There is no screen saver turned on on Windows7. I tried to run both but nothing helped. tscon.exe 0 /dest:console tscon.exe 1 /dest:console On Windows7 tscon returns {ErrorPrintf(): LoadString failed, Error 15105, (0x00003B01)} Error [15105]:The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry. Error [0]:The operation completed successfully. On Windows XP tscon returns Could not connect sessionID 0 to sessionname console, Error code 7045 Error [7045]:The requested session access is denied. I just double checked that running tscon.exe 0 /dest:console on Windows XP solves the issue. Cannot understand the output of the tscon command then. Any idea how I can run RFT scripts after I restart the Windows box automatically? Preferably without involving any other computer. I was even thinking to use the old Windows XP to make remote desktop session to make RFT happy. I hope there is other better solution to that.
