  • Declaration, allocation and assignment of an array of pointers to function pointers

    - by manneorama
    Hello Stack Overflow! This is my first post, so please be gentle. I've been playing around with C from time to time in the past. Now I've gotten to the point where I've started a real project (a 2D graphics engine using SDL, but that's irrelevant for the question), to be able to say that I have some real C experience. Yesterday, while working on the event system, I ran into a problem which I couldn't solve. There's this typedef, //the void parameter is really an SDL_Event*. //but that is irrelevant for this question. typedef void (*event_callback)(void); which specifies the signature of a function to be called on engine events. I want to be able to support multiple event_callbacks, so an array of these callbacks would be an idea, but do not want to limit the amount of callbacks, so I need some sort of dynamic allocation. This is where the problem arose. My first attempt went like this: //initial size of callback vector static const int initial_vecsize = 32; //our event callback vector static event_callback* vec = 0; //size static unsigned int vecsize = 0; void register_event_callback(event_callback func) { if (!vec) __engine_allocate_vec(vec); vec[vecsize++] = func; //error here! } static void __engine_allocate_vec(engine_callback* vec) { vec = (engine_callback*) malloc(sizeof(engine_callback*) * initial_vecsize); } First of all, I have omitted some error checking as well as the code that reallocates the callback vector when the number of callbacks exceed the vector size. However, when I run this code, the program crashes as described in the code. I'm guessing segmentation fault but I can't be sure since no output is given. I'm also guessing that the error comes from a somewhat flawed understanding on how to declare and allocate an array of pointers to function pointers. Please Stack Overflow, guide me.

  • "Thread-Safe Calls" with "Invoke" method to Winform control leads very heavy memory leak!!

    - by konnychen
    In the following link: "Make Thread-Safe Calls to Windows Forms Controls http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171728.aspx" We can see an example which provide cross tread access to a winform control. But if the thread is in a while loop, it will cause the heavy memory leak. As I use taskmanage I can see the memory is increasing. Can anyone help me to solve the problem? oThread2 = new Thread(new ThreadStart(Cyclic_Call)); oThread2.Start(); delegate void SetText_lab_Statubar(string text); private void m_SetText_lab_Statubar(string text) { if (this.lab_Statubar.InvokeRequired) { SetText_lab_Statubar d = new SetText_lab_Statubar(m_SetText_lab_Statubar); this.Invoke(d, new object[] { text }); } else { this.lab_Statubar.Text = text; } } private void Cyclic_Call() { do { this.m_SetText_lab_Statubar("This string is set from thread"); Thread.Sleep(100); } while (!b_AbortThraed); }

  • how can c# help in drawing using memory layers concept?

    - by moon
    hello all i am facing problem in drawing dynamically in a picture box. i works very good when the drawing objects are few but as the drawing objects increases the response time of my GUI is getting worse and worse, my GUI works very well up to 90 drawing objects but i have to support more than 1000 so this technique didn't work for me. know i have decided to adopt layers mechanism, i mean i will draw different layers of drawing in memory and then XOR them to load the final image to my display. the question is "i Can play directly with memory do draw layers using C# (Examples needed?)" other ideas are also appreciated, (Drawing objects means the shapes line,circles etc. that i have to draw on my GUI) thanx in advance

  • vector related memory allocation question

    - by memC
    hi all, I am encountering the following bug. I have a class Foo . Instances of this class are stored in a std::vector vec of class B. in class Foo, I am creating an instance of class A by allocating memory using new and deleting that object in ~Foo(). the code compiles, but I get a crash at the runtime. If I disable delete my_a from desstructor of class Foo. The code runs fine (but there is going to be a memory leak). Could someone please explain what is going wrong here and suggest a fix? thank you! class A{ public: A(int val); ~A(){}; int val_a; }; A::A(int val){ val_a = val; }; class Foo { public: Foo(); ~Foo(); void createA(); A* my_a; }; Foo::Foo(){ createA(); }; void Foo::createA(){ my_a = new A(20); }; Foo::~Foo(){ delete my_a; }; class B { public: vector<Foo> vec; void createFoo(); B(){}; ~B(){}; }; void B::createFoo(){ vec.push_back(Foo()); }; int main(){ B b; int i =0; for (i = 0; i < 5; i ++){ std::cout<<"\n creating Foo"; b.createFoo(); std::cout<<"\n Foo created"; } std::cout<<"\nDone with Foo creation"; std::cout << "\nPress RETURN to continue..."; std::cin.get(); return 0; }

  • Memory leak at NSObject allocation

    - by Srilakshmi Manthena
    HI, I am getting memory leak at NSObject allocation i.e., ContactDTO* contactDTO = [[ContactDTO alloc] init]; Code: +(ContactDTO*) getContactDTOForId:(NSString*) contactId { NSString* homeMail =@""; NSString* workMail=@""; NSString *lastNameString=@""; NSString *firstNameString=@""; firstNameString = [AddressBookUtil getValueForProperty:kABPersonFirstNameProperty forContact:contactId]; lastNameString = [AddressBookUtil getValueForProperty:kABPersonLastNameProperty forContact:contactId]; ABRecordID contactIntId = [contactId intValue]; ABRecordRef person = ABAddressBookGetPersonWithRecordID(addressBook, contactIntId); ABMultiValueRef emailMultiValue =(NSString *)ABRecordCopyValue(person, kABPersonEmailProperty); for(CFIndex j=0;j<ABMultiValueGetCount(emailMultiValue);j++) { NSString* curentTypeLabel =(NSString *)ABMultiValueCopyLabelAtIndex(emailMultiValue,j); if([curentTypeLabel isEqualToString:@"_$!<Home>!$_"]==YES) { NSString* currentEmail =(NSString *)ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(emailMultiValue,j); if([currentEmail isEqualToString:nil]==NO) { homeMail = [currentEmail copy]; } } if([curentTypeLabel isEqualToString:@"_$!<Work>!$_"]==YES) { NSString* currentEmail =(NSString *)ABMultiValueCopyValueAtIndex(emailMultiValue,j); if([currentEmail isEqualToString:nil]==NO) { workMail = [currentEmail copy]; } } } ContactDTO* contactDTO = [[ContactDTO alloc] init]; contactDTO.firstName = firstNameString; contactDTO.lastName = lastNameString; contactDTO.contactId = contactId; contactDTO.homeEmail = homeMail; contactDTO.workEmail = workMail; return [contactDTO autorelease]; }

  • Are memory barriers necessary for atomic reference counting shared immutable data?

    - by Dietrich Epp
    I have some immutable data structures that I would like to manage using reference counts, sharing them across threads on an SMP system. Here's what the release code looks like: void avocado_release(struct avocado *p) { if (atomic_dec(p->refcount) == 0) { free(p->pit); free(p->juicy_innards); free(p); } } Does atomic_dec need a memory barrier in it? If so, what kind of memory barrier? Additional notes: The application must run on PowerPC and x86, so any processor-specific information is welcomed. I already know about the GCC atomic builtins. As for immutability, the refcount is the only field that changes over the duration of the object.

  • Will it use more and more memory if I keep drawing on the UIView?

    - by Tattat
    This is my drawRect: CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 2.0); CGContextSetStrokeColorWithColor(context, [UIColor redColor].CGColor); CGContextMoveToPoint(context, x1, y1); CGContextAddLineToPoint(context, x2, y2); CGContextStrokePath(context); If I run this code thousand times or more. My UIView will have many lines on that. Will it use more memory than only just one line on it? Er... ...I mean, will the program remember the line I draw or after it draw the lines, it won't have any information in the memory. thz .

  • How can I avoid "Your system is running low on virtual memory" pop-up?

    - by Xavier Nodet
    Our application sometimes uses a lot of memory, and this is expected. But when we test it under high load on Windows XP, we usually get the very annoying "Your system is running low on virtual memory" popup, and this prevents our automated, unattended, tests to run through... Is it possible to prevent this popup to appear, and just have the allocation fail? The app will handle it gracefully, and tests will go on... We are using Windows XP, but if a solution only exists on later versions, I'd be happy to know anyway.

  • ASP.NET web services leak memory when (de)serializing disposable objects?

    - by Serilla
    In the following two cases, if Customer is disposable (implementing IDisposable), I believe it will not be disposed by ASP.NET, potentially being the cause of a memory leak: [WebMethod] public Customer FetchCustomer(int id) { return new Customer(id); } [WebMethod] public void SaveCustomer(Customer value) { // save it } This flaw applies to any IDisposable object. So returning a DataSet from a ASP.NET web service, for example, will also result in a memory leak - the DataSet will not be disposed. In my case, Customer opened a database connection which was cleaned up in Dispose - except Dispose was never called resulting in loads of unclosed database connections. I realise there a whole bunch of bad practices being followed here (its only an example anyway), but the point is that ASP.NET - the (de)serializer - is responsible for disposing these objects, so why doesn't it? This is an issue I was aware of for a while, but never got to the bottom of. I'm hoping somebody can confirm what I have found, and perhaps explain if there is a way of dealing with it.

  • Capacity Allocation

    - by user1708730
    I am new to VB in Excel. I have a unique requirement for capacity allocation which I want to automate using excel VB and facing hard time doing so, hope you can help. The objective is to maximize profit by allocating maximum capacity to those products which have highest profit potential first. Every Month I get demand along with backlogs of previous month. I need to allocate capacity to backlogs of previous month first and then only the remaining capacity for fresh demand. There are two primary constraints: 1.The number of working days in a month (variable) 2. Not all products can be made on every production line and out of same product may be different for each production line Also there will be losses whenever there is a change over from one SKU to another depending upon the Variant Type and size of next product. If there is variant change then 8 hours of production loss needs to be accounted and 4 hours in case of size change(8 hours in case of both). I have attached sample data(Actual data has 10 production lines and 50 products) https://rapidshare.com/files/1822719405/Sample%20Data.xlsx?bin=1 Thanks in advance for help!

  • Does remove a DOM object (in Javascript) will cause Memory leak if it has event attached?

    - by seatoskyhk
    So, if in the javascript, I create a DOM object in the HTML page, and attach event listener to the DOM object, upon I remove the the DOM from HTML page, does the event listener still exist and causing memory leak? function myTest() { var obj = document.createElement('div'); obj.addEventListener('click', function() {alert('whatever'); }); var body = document.getElementById('body'); // assume there is a <div id='body'></div> already body.appendChild(obj); } // then after some user actions. I call this: function emptyPage() { var body = document.getElementById('body'); body.innerHTML = ''; //empty it. } So, the DOM object, <div> inside body is gone. But what about the eventlistener? I'm just afraid that it will cause memory leak.

  • Resource allocation and automatic deallocation

    - by nabulke
    In my application I got many instances of class CDbaOciNotifier. They all share a pointer to only one instance of class OCIEnv. What I like to achieve is that allocation and deallocation of the resource class OCIEnv will be handled automatically inside class CDbaOciNotifier. The desired behaviour is, with the first instance of class CDbaOciNotifier the environment will be created, after that all following notifiers use that same environment. With the destruction of the last notifier, the environment will be destroyed too (call to custom deleter). What I've got so far (using a static factory method to create notifiers): #pragma once #include <string> #include <memory> #include "boost\noncopyable.hpp" class CDbaOciNotifier : private boost::noncopyable { public: virtual ~CDbaOciNotifier(void); static std::auto_ptr<CDbaOciNotifier> createNotifier(const std::string &tnsName, const std::string &user, const std::string &password); private: CDbaOciNotifier(OCIEnv* envhp); // All notifiers share one environment static OCIEnv* m_ENVHP; // Custom deleter static void freeEnvironment(OCIEnv *env); OCIEnv* m_envhp; }; CPP: #include "DbaOciNotifier.h" using namespace std; OCIEnv* CDbaOciNotifier::m_ENVHP = 0; CDbaOciNotifier::~CDbaOciNotifier(void) { } CDbaOciNotifier::CDbaOciNotifier(OCIEnv* envhp) :m_envhp(envhp) { } void CDbaOciNotifier::freeEnvironment(OCIEnv *env) { OCIHandleFree((dvoid *) env, (ub4) OCI_HTYPE_ENV); *env = null; } auto_ptr<CDbaOciNotifier> CDbaOciNotifier::createNotifier(const string &tnsName, const string &user, const string &password) { if(!m_ENVHP) { OCIEnvCreate( (OCIEnv **) &m_ENVHP, OCI_EVENTS|OCI_OBJECT, (dvoid *)0, (dvoid * (*)(dvoid *, size_t)) 0, (dvoid * (*)(dvoid *, dvoid *, size_t))0, (void (*)(dvoid *, dvoid *)) 0, (size_t) 0, (dvoid **) 0 ); } //shared_ptr<OCIEnv> spEnvhp(m_ENVHP, freeEnvironment); ...got so far... return auto_ptr<CDbaOciNotifier>(new CDbaOciNotifier(m_ENVHP)); } I'd like to avoid counting references (notifiers) myself, and use something like shared_ptr. Do you see an easy solution to my problem?

  • Are local variables in Fortran 77 static or stack dynamic?

    - by mm2887
    For my programming languages class one hw problem asks: Are local variables in FORTRAN static or stack dynamic? Are local variables that are INITIALIZED to a default value static or stack dynamic? Show me some code with an explanation to back up your answer. Hint: The easiest way to check this is to have your program test the history sensitivity of a subprogram. Look at what happens when you initialize the local variable to a value and when you don’t. You may need to call more than one subprogram to lock in your answer with confidence. I wrote a few subroutines: - create a variable - print the variable - initialize the variable to a value - print the variable again Each successive call to the subroutine prints out the same random value for the variable when it is uninitialized and then it prints out the initialized value. What is this random value when the variable is uninitialized? Does this mean Fortran uses the same memory location for each call to the subroutine or it dynamically creates space and initializes the variable randomly? My second subroutine also creates a variable, but then calls the first subroutine. The result is the same except the random number printed of the uninitialized variable is different. I am very confused. Please help! Thank you so much.

  • Can you have a Dynamic Data Field which consists of a list of fields?

    - by Telos
    This is a purely theoretical question (at least until I start trying to implement it) but here goes. I wrote a web form a long time ago which has a configurable section for getting information. Basically for some customers there are no fields, for other customers there are up to 20 fields. I got it working by dynamically creating the fields at just the right time in the page lifecycle and going through a lot of headaches. 2 years later, I need to make some pretty big updates to this web form and there are some nifty new technologies. I've worked with ASP.NET Dynamic Data just a bit and, well, I half-crazed plan just occurred to me: The Ticket object has a one-to-many relationship to ExtendedField, we'll call that relationship Fields for brevity. Using that, the idea would be to create a FieldTemplate that dynamically generated the list of fields and displayed it. The big questions here would probably be: 1) Can a single field template resolve to multiple web controls without breaking things? 2) Can dynamic data handle updating/inserting multiple rows in such a fashion? 3) There was a third question I had a few minutes ago, but coworkers interrupted me and I forgot. So now the third question is: what is the third question? So basically, does this sound like it could work or am I missing a better/more obvious solution?
