• Error:couldn't read file-Kernel panic

  I have just installed ubuntu 12.04.1. To be honest I had to run installation several times until it was finished fine. When I finally managed to install it properly, I power on the laptop and the grub shoed up! I selected ubuntu generic. It takes some time to load and when it does I get an error message stating that error: couldn't read file Press any key to continue If I press any button nothing happens. A friend tried to dual boot ubuntu alongside windows 7 but he didn't succeed. Ubuntu option was in grub, but when you tried to boot it rebooted from the start. So from a Live CD I erased ubuntu, started windows to check if something went wrong, and fortunately everything was OK. Windows started normally! So I tried to install ubuntu. Before installation was completed the installer crashed! I was afraid that he would lost windows, something that was true... At that point I tried to install windows but whichever distro(XP, 7{home, proffessional, ultimate},8) I tried it could never reach the end. So I tried to reinstall ubuntu but I was facing those weird messages. What can I do to move on? ______________________________________________________________________ EDIT1: I tried to check and fix(if possible) with GParted it took a lot of hours,although gparted displays only 01:14, I restarted the system and now I get not exactly the same messages. After that his cooler became to make a weird noise so I checked and it is a bit tortuous but it is working. What I beleive must be wrong is that his HDD makes a weird noise while trying to load ubuntu, which means he might need a new HDD. Could that be true?

• Invalid Argument javascript error only on certain computers

  Getting an error whenever we click a particular button/link on our site. It is generating a javascript "Invalid Argument" error. I know in the other posts it is typically because it is a syntax error in the javascript however it only just seems to have started happening and it doesn't happen on all pcs. ie. in our client's environment if I remote onto their web server and view the uat website I get the javascript error. If I remote onto their sql server and view the uat website I don't get the javascript error. If it was a syntax error then I would always get the error wouldn't I? both browsers are the same version of IE6 (yeah I know...) :) I have tried deleting temporary internet files - including viewing the files and deleting them myself - but no joy. client uses citrix.. and they're all getting the error :( Any ideas would be appreciated - Thanks! :) Update - Sorry I haven't posted specific code as there is too much to post (and I'm not sure where the error is occurring). The "button" launches a new window which in turn opens up a couple of aspx pages and calls lots of javascript. So the window opens ok, and there's a function that gets called to resize the window - but before it calls the resizing of the window/content it throws the invalid argument error. Am busy trying to get alerts to trigger to see if I can see where it's falling over but so far no luck. Again not sure why this error doesn't occur when I use a particular PC (same browser version)

  Hy, I just installed the ubuntu 11.04. After I restarted the PC I got a little notification that some drivers are missing, I click to activate the driver. So after the activation I can't use the unity. When in the preference page I click to the Ati catalyst control center I get the following error: There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig. My video card is ATI so I don't know what is the problem!?!

  Hello! I have a small public internet cafe, with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. I'm using Google Chrome 7.0.517.44 (64615), with AutoScroll - Version: 2.7.5; AdBlock is removed because of high CPU loads, and unconfortable speed of machine. "Your profile could not be opened correctly" error is displayed: This image is only an illustration. The reason is that I changed permissions of some config files, to don't remember the history, there are no setting in options, to don't use history. I've been removed write permission to: ~/.config/google-chrome$ find . -group nopasswdlogin ./Default/Archived History ./Default/History ./Default/Visited Links When I solved all of my problem, I'll remove some other write permission, this is a public place. What methods are known to HIDE this message? Thanks!

• How can I restore a corrupted Shotwell db?

  While I was importing photos from a SD card in Shotwell, my laptop has crashed (shutdown because of over-heating). Now, I can no longer launch Shotwell: $ shotwell ** ERROR:x86_64-linux-gnu/db/VersionTable.c:104:version_table_construct: assertion failed: (res == SQLITE_OK) If I move the .db file ~/.shotwell/data/photo.db elsewhere so it is no longer present (but backed-up), shotwell will launch, but will rebuild its library, which will be empty. I can re-import the folders shotwell creates, but I lose nearly all meta-data (most importantly the "folders", or events, and their main picture) Is there a way to repair/rebuild/restore photo.db? How can I see what's inside? how bad it's damaged? Or is there another way to get back my events and imports?

• Problem with installing programs

  I am unable to install programs for the Ubuntu 10.10 system. These download ok, but when attempting to install them, the following message is displayed: AN ERROR OCCURRED WHILE OPENING THE ARCHIVE END-OF-CENTRAL-DIRECTORY SIGNATURE NOT FOUND etc....... ZIPINFO: CANNOT FIND ZIPFILE DIRECTORY IN etc...... As I am new to Ubuntu and also fairly "green" as far as computer terminology is concerned, I have no idea what this means and don't have a clue on how to fix it. Can you help please?   I recently built a computer running Ubuntu 11.10. It works great, except for one thing. With some video DVDs, when I insert them into my drive, the movie player just says "An error occurred. Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed." My mac plays the DVD just fine. What is a DVD decryption library, and how can I install it? Thanks! EDIT: I need LEGAL way to do this. All I want is to be able to use this computer as a HTPC!

  I introduce a CD-RW, maybe blank (I really don't know), and after a little movement inside the reader, the CD is ejected without any message at all. I would like to know what is going on and the reason why it is ejected. How can I know that in Natty. The CD reader is working OK because I can read other CD's. It only gave me problems writing from Natty, a few days ago, but with MacOS there was no problem. I have read that i could install a file of this type by extractingits contents and following these steps. ./configure make install But, when I give ./configure checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane - configure error Am i following the steps? • Grub can't find device on boot resulting in Grub Rescue

  So I have 2 hard drives a HDD 320GB and a SSD 20GB. Before I had Windows 7 on the HDD and Ubuntu on the SSD but wanted to get rid of windows and reinstall a clean Ubuntu on the SSD then use the HDD for storage. So I deleted everything from the HDD and set up the SSD with 18GB ext4 and 2GB Swap and installed Ubuntu on the 18GB ext4. Though now when I boot up I get "Error: No such device Grub Rescue" I have a live USB and I ran the Boot Repair following these instructions - grub rescue after install of Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot) - it says successful though still have the same problem. • How do I install latest NVIDIA drivers?

  This is what I am trying to do. I downloaded the latest driver for my VGA from http://www.nvidia.com. The installation needs the X11 to be shut down, so I log out of my account, then press CTRL+ALT+F1, then log in with my username and passowrd, then run the command sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run in every possible way, I have even tried CHMODing the package with 777 permissions, but still I'm getting the sh: can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm developing a PHP login component which includes functions to manipulate the User object, such as $User->changePassword(string $old, string $new) What I need some advice with is how to return a status, as the function can either succeed (no further information needs to be given) or fail (and the calling code needs to know why, for example incorrect password, database problem etc.) I've come up with the following ideas: Unix-style: return 0 on success, another code on failure. This doesn't seem particularly common in PHP and the language's type-coercion messes with this (a function returning FALSE on success?) This seems to be the best I can think of. Throw an exception on error. PHP's exception support is limited, and this will make life harder for anybody trying to use the functions. Return an array, containing a boolean for "success" or not, and a string or an int for "failure status" if applicable. None of these seem particularly appealing, does anyone have any advice or better ideas?

Problem is that the message pump in TApplication sends it down a black hole (default handler) before i can get a chance to see it: procedure TApplication.WndProc(var Message: TMessage); ... begin Message.Result := 0; for I := 0 to FWindowHooks.Count - 1 do if TWindowHook(FWindowHooks[I]^)(Message) then Exit; CheckIniChange(Message); with Message do case Msg of WM_SETTINGCHANGE: begin Mouse.SettingChanged(wParam); Default; <----------------------*poof* down the sink hole end; ... end; ... end; The procedure CheckIniChange() doesn't throw any event i can handle, neither does Mouse.SettingChanged(). And once the code path reaches Default, it is sent down the DefWindowProc drain hole, never to be seen again (since the first thing the WndProc does is set the Message.Result to zero. i was hoping to assign a handler to a TApplicationEvents.OnMessage event: procedure TdmGlobal.ApplicationEvents1Message(var Msg: tagMSG; var Handled: Boolean); begin case Msg.message of WM_SETTINGCHANGE: begin // Code end; end; end; But the OnMessage event is only thrown for messages that come through the message pump. Since the WM_SETTINGCHANGE message is "handled", it never sees the PeekMessage TranslateMessage DispatchMessage system. How can i respond to the windows broadcast WM_SETTINGCHANGE?

• Application Errors vs User Errors in PHP

  So after much debate back and forth, I've come up with what I think may be a valid plan to handle Application/System errors vs User Errors (I.e. Validation Issues, Permission Issues etc). Application/System Errors will be handled using a custom error handler (via set_error_handler()). Depending on the severity of the error, the user may be redirected to a generic error page (I.e. Fatal Error), or the error may simply be silently logged (i.e E_WARNING). These errors are ones most likely caused by issues outside the users control (Missing file, Bad logic, etc). The second set of errors would be User Generated ones. These are the ones may not automatically trigger an error but would be considered one. In these cases i"ve decided to use the trigger_error() function and typically throw a waning or notice which would be logged silently by the error handler. After that it would be up to the developer to then redirect the user to another page or display some sort of more meaningful message to the user. This way an error of any type is always logged, but user errors still allow the developer freedom to handle it in their own ways. I.e. Redirect them back to their form with it fully repopulated and a message of what went wrong. Does anyone see anything wrong with this, or have a more intuitive way? My approach to error handling is typically everyone has their own ways but there must be a way instituted.

Then, I have form, that is "collapsed" after showing form. RichEdit Control is sattic, visible and enabled, but it is "hidden" because form window is collapsed. I can expand and collapse form, using Button1 and changing forms Constraints and Size properties. After first time I expand form, the URL inside RichEdit1 control is highlighted. BUT - After second, third, fourth, etc... time I Collapse and Expand form, the RichEdit1 Control does not highlight URL anymore. I have tried EM_SETTEXTMODE messages, also WM_UPDATEUISTATE, also basic WM_TEXT message - no luck. It sems like this merssage really works ( enables detection ) while sending keyboard strokes ( virtual keycodes ), but not when text has been modified. Also - I am thinking to rewrite code to make RichEdit Control dynamic. Would this fix the problem? Maybe solution is to override OnPaint / OnDraw method to avoid highlight ( formatting ) losing when collapsing or expanding form? Weird is that my Embarcadero Documentation says this function must work in any moment text has been modified. Why it does not work? Any help appreciated. Sure, I can study the implementation but if somebody is more experienced then me, some explanation and examples would be great. Do you have some examples for UI_INHERITANCE_UNSAFE_GETRESOURCE when this is getting a problem? In BX_UNBOXED_AND_COERCED_FOR_TERNARY_OPERATOR I don't see the problem either. If one type is "bigger" then the other, for example int and float, then the result is float. If its Integer and Float its the wrapper Float too. That's what I expect. Does the GC_UNRELATED_TYPES really help to find errors? Isn't it the job of the compiler to check, if--taking the given example--Foo can't go into a Collection<String>. Does HE_SIGNATURE_DECLARES_HASHING_OF_UNHASHABLE_CLASS mean something like bla(Foo f){hashtable.put(f);}, where ´Foo´ is not hashable? Does FingBugs "see" the subclasses too?
