• Is it possible to change the Raid5 chunk size of an existing device?

  I have an existing raid5 device which I created using mdadm on Linux. When I created the device I set the chunk size to 64 but I would like to test the performance of various sizes but I don't want to have to rebuild my entire system to do so. If it is not possible to do it live then is it possible to do this by booting with a rescue disk? Any advice on the steps how to do this, either live or with a rescue disk, will be greatly appreciated.

  say I have a wordpress site: https://www.foobar.com and I want to have an entry point to a rails app at a certain subdirectory within that same domain: https://www.foobar.com/rails_app I know this is possible if both the wordpress app and the rails app are hosted on the same box, but is this in anyway possible if they are hosted on different boxes? I do not want to use subdomains because I am trying to allow ajax post requests from one to the other and not having to deal with single origin policy stuff.

  In Visual Studio 2008 I know its possible to have one solution with two (or more) projects. Is it possible OR How is it possible for the projects to share common class files? For example - Project 1 has a log file handling class. Can Project 2 reference it? My hope is to increase code re-use and avoid two copies of the same thing that need to be maintained. • Woes of a Junior Developer - is it possible to not be cut out for programming?

  (Let me start off by asking - please be gentle, I know this is subjective, but it's meant to incite discussion and provide information for others. If needed it can be converted to community wiki.) I recently was hired as a junior developer at a company I really like. I started out in the field doing QA and transitioned into more and more development work, which is what I really want to end up doing. I enjoy it, but more and more I am questioning whether I am really any good at it or not. Part of this is still growing into the junior developer role, I know, but how much? What are junior developers to expect, what should they be doing and not doing? What can I do to improve and show my company I am serious about this opportunity? I hate that I am costing them time by getting up to speed. I've been told by others that companies make investments in Junior devs and don't expect them to pay off for a while, but how much of this is true? There's got to be a point when it's apparent whether the investment will pay off or not. So far I've been trying to ask as many questions I can, but I've you've been obsessing over a simple problem for some time and the others know that, there comes a time when it's pretty embarrassing to have to get help after struggling so long. I've also tried to be as open to suggestion as possible and work with others to try to refactor my code, but sometimes this can be hard clashing with various team members' personal opinions (being told by someone to write it one way, and then having someone else make you rewrite it). I often get over-stressed and judge myself too harshly, but I just don't want to have to struggle the rest of my life trying to get things work if I just don't have the talent. In your experience, is programming something that almost everyone can learn, or something that some people just don't get? Do others feel this way, or did you feel that way when starting out? It scares me that I have no other job skills should I be unsuited for having the skills necessary to code well.

  (I'm not advertising nor promoting this game, as it's just an example of my experience and I would like to have your opinion about the matter if possible) I've been started researching "things" about games and I've decided to begin to play IMVU as a friend of mine said it's cool. At first it seemed just another 3d social game, not so cool.. But I've "tried to like" and after 1 day I can say I'm addicted to it! Yes; I will explain better: About the game: You can go in chat-rooms, move to positions. Some positions are like sitting in a sofa, floor, dancing alone or with a partner, kissing and more in this way. In the free version of the game there is no nudity. You can even listen to music, view youtube... The 3d graphics are quite low end, so it's not as real as the paid PC games of today. About my experience: At first I was going with my friend in chat-rooms, they seemed very nice. There were people talking about general stuff, quite like in a real life. Well, I begin to know some girls (yes, virtual girls commanded by a real girl, I hope!). Things happened: Some girls are just crazy, not like in real life, they make out in before even talking; Other girls you can speak a little bit, then they add you to their friend-list. Sometimes they invite to their virtual places. Some girls have really IMVU boyfriends only (but not in reality) and most of them don't even make up in the game, so it's really a level of commitment involved here! But from what my friend told they last for him, at least, about 3 days... Some others have real and IMVU boyfriends that are the same. Until now I haven't find a girl with different boyfriend in the IMVU and reality. Nor multiple boyfriends. There are rooms where the same people find each selves every day and speak about general stuff, relationships and so on... They are nice with you, they "feel" you and show careness. This is what amazes me, they treat you like a real human being and as being their friend in the real world. (of course it's not always like this) There are jealous girls too and competitiveness between females lol, I know you loled! This is kind of social. So today I closed my door in my room and I've played it all day long and guess what, I didn't feel a need to stay with a real person at all. Normally, If I would stay a full day alone I would get quite crazy... • Is it possible to have a wireless in-house NAS with wireless data transfer rates of equivalent to SATA speeds?

  Basically I would like to know, if it is possible to set up an NAS in my house to be accessed wirelessly, that can reach equivalent real-life data transfer speeds to USB 3.0 or an internal SATA hard drive. I have been wanting to do this for some time ( a couple of years now). Basically, this is what I want to do: Plug in a number of hard drives in an array, somewhere in my house, to be left plugged in and never have to be monitored. Ideally several terabytes. Whenever I am home, to have my computer and laptop configured to automatically find the NAS, as easy as plugging in an external hard drive - except completely wirelessly. Data transfer needs to be as seamless and quick as having added another internal hard drive in my laptop. Moreover, data should be able to accessed without having to copy it over - I should be able to wirelessly access the NAS and browse files, and open files directly from the NAS. For example, say I wanted to open a video - I should be able to play the video that is located on the NAS, directly from the NAS, completely wirelessly. If I wanted to open a .pdf file, I should be able to open it and read it directly from the NAS, as if it were located on my physical internal hard drive. Cost is important as well. Please tell me what equipment I need for this to be possible. I know you geniuses out there who can tell me if this is possible.

  Like the title says, "In Excel, when a cell has multiple conditional formatting rules that evaluate true, is it possible to have the cell "visually cycle" through all the formats that evaluated true? If not, suggestions on what to do would be appreciated!" I'm creating an employee schedule for a business that has multiple job areas that need to have an employee assigned to cover. The schedule is currently set up with the date on the top row, employee list down the left column, and the employee's assigned "job area" cross-referencing with the date on the top row. Originally it was set up where if every required "job area" didn't have someone assigned to it, the date would (via conditional formatting) change to red. I've set it up now that if a condition isn't met, the date will change to the color of the "job area" that doesn't have an employee assigned to it. However, there are cases where multiple job areas don't have an employee assigned, but the date will only change color based on the first condition that isn't met. It'd be nice if there was some way for the date cell to cycle through the different colors that correspond to the job areas where no one is assigned. I have a hunch that's not possible though. If it is possible, I'd love to know how to do it. And if it isn't, if anyone has any suggestions on how I can modify the Excel sheet to make it easier to identify the job areas that don't have anyone assigned to them, I would appreciate it. FYI This schedule goes out months in advance.

• Is it possible to recover from the Windows 8 refresh feature?

  The intention of the Windows 8 RTM (released version) Refresh feature is to restore the system to the way it was when I first installed. It didn't though. Almost everything that came in the start-screen (not a menu any more) is gone, not just third party apps I installed, but EVERYTHING other than the icon for internet explorer, and the icon for the store, and the desktop, were wiped. Out of the box Windows 8 had a pretty large list of things installed, and it seems that the Refresh feature wipes all of them out. Is it possible to really get the system back to a fresh install state, or should I just re-install from the DVD I made? (I have access to Windows 8 RTM, legally through the MS Action Pack subscription.) I suspect that if I create a new account, I might get a new desktop with a default set of icons, but I'm hoping it might be possible to do this without using a different login. The second problem with Windows 8 refresh is it seems to trash the ACL's on my C: drive, taking all permissions away for access to the C: drive, making nothing on it visible or readable to my primary and only login account. I believe it might be possible to undo the damage done by the "refresh" with some judicious use of icacls from the command prompt.

• Is it possible to automate a driver change on Windows for a plug&play peripheral ?

  Is it possible to automate a change of driver for a same peripheral, under Windows ? Typically to switch between two ones. (I'm talking about the kind of driver which doesn't require the computer to reboot, typically). I have a peripheral for which I use the constructor's driver in some cases, but also a modified driver in other cases. Not that the changing driver is really annoying, but I would like to know if it would be possible to make it easier, like for example in a shortcut. I know the name of the driver, even which files involved. For more details, the concerned peripheral is a "Xbox360 Gamepad for Windows" (or something like this). The base driver is good for new games, but it doesn't handle correctly older ones (some issues with axes, and vibrations). The modified driver makes it behave like a classic controller, but then it doesn't work correctly on new games (typically using the new version of dxinput linked to the "Games for Windows"). However, this is not a question specific to this gamepad, I'm asking in general about automating this change of drivers. I currently use Windows XP, so my question is mostly about it, but I'm also interested in the same issue for later versions (Windows 7, most likely). I'm not really sure if this is even possible, but in case someone has an idea, I'm asking.

  We're evaluating using SharePoint 2010 as our project management tool. Specifically, the system needs to satisfy the following: Discussion groups Project management (simple issue tracking, no complex workflows or vcs integrations) News feed for the project(s) File sharing based on authorization/user-roles Custom homepage Custom forms using MS SQL Server as a backend and contents of old forms searchable from the user interface. Now, I think [1-5] is possible using SharePoint (Comments are always welcome :)). I'm not sure about [6]. Is it possible? For instance, can an admin or a user of the SharePoint portal, create a custom form (without any programming) that uses MS SQL Server as a backend and publish it to the portal so that other users can also perform data entry? If it can be done (be it with or without some programming), can users perform text search on form data using the SharePoint interface?

  Related to an another question I asked. This question seems similar but I'm wondering if there are any updates. To support a single site that has users all over the world, I will create EC2 web servers in the US, Asia and Europe regions. The web server instances in the US and Asia regions will be backed by RDS replicas. Is it possible to load balance across these three regions? So when a customer from Spain goes to example.com, she should be routed to the EC2 instances in Europe region, a customer in Miami should be sent to the instance in Eastern US region, etc. Is this possible to do this with just AWS features? Are there docs on how to set this up?

• Is it possible to fake a Windows install for grub to add to boot menu?

  When doing a fresh install of a Linux distro (Ubuntu, for instance) on a fresh hard drive, if I want to install Linux first, and Windows later, is it possible to make grub think there's a Windows install on the first partition so that it'll be added to the boot menu after the installation is complete? To illustrate, I have a new hard drive and have created two primary partitions (both still raw) and two logical (Ext4 and Swap). I want to install Ubuntu on the Ext4 partition first, and some version of Windows on the first primary partition only after that (because I currently don't have a Windows install disk, but do have one for Ubuntu). Is it possible to make Ubuntu add an entry for Windows right now and avoid having to repair grub after I've installed Windows?

• Is real-time or synchronous replication possible over WAN link?

  The company I work for is looking to implement truly real-time file replication with file locking over a WAN link that spans over 2000 miles. We currently have a 16-drive SAN setup in our east coast office. We also have an office out in Colorado that will have the same exact SAN setup. The idea is to have those two SANs contain the same exact data at all times, which will allow us to work with the same data pool, and which will also provide use with an offsite backup solution, should a failure occur on either end. We're running Server 2008. The objective is to enable users in the east coast office to work on files and have those changes be instantly updated on the Colorado SAN as well. We also need there to be file locking so that there will be no conflicts or overwritten changes if users attempt to work on the same file. Is this scenario even possible, at speeds that would make the files usable? And if so, what software would we need to pull this off? As I understand it, DFS-R does not provide file locking, so if we used that, we would need to go with a third-party product like Peerlock. But I don't even know if DFS-R is an option. Can it replicate quickly enough over a WAN link? Can any product? It seems that if we were to use synchronous replication, the programs would be unacceptably slow, as every write would have to wait for confirmation from the other end of the link. But if we used asynchronous replication, what kind of latency would we be looking at? There is a product from GlobalScape called WAFS that claims to provide "File coherence with real-time file locking, file release, and synchronization" and says that "As files are modified, changes are mirrored instantly using intelligent byte-level differencing to minimize the impact on network bandwidth". So this sounds like synchronous replication, but that doesn't even seem possible, given physical limitations such as the speed of light. If anyone has any experience with this kind of setup, or knows whether it's even possible, I'd appreciate your input and suggestions, including recommendations for software that we should check out.

  When setting up Profile Manager in Lion Server, there are a few web pages that are generated for web management of both devices and profiles. Is it possible to edit these pages in any way? I am just looking to customize the look and feel without changing the functionality. If editing is possible, where are these pages stored? I have looked through the /Library/Server/ProfileManager and /Library/Server/Web folders without any luck. This is one particular page I would like to edit. Ideally I would like to be able to edit the HTML directly. I am looking to match the page's style with a variety of other pages hosted on the server.

  Gigabit ethernet only has 1Gbps (125MBps), whereas SATA II has up to three times that rate. Is it possible to achieve the rate of three times Gigabit ethernet connection which is SATA II speeds, between home network storage and the laptops and desktops with SATA II hard drives? If so, how? Or, is the limitation of a gigabit ethernet port on the laptops the limitng factor, making 1000Gbps the fastest practical transfer speed possible? (practical, meaning that without taking apart the laptop and doing physical modifications like branching a SATA II transfer cable, etc.) -- I just realized -- wouldn't a USB 3.0 cable do the trick? Since USB 3.0 can reach up to 675MBps?

  Is it possible to run for example history -w for underlying bash shell from ruby script? Or better is it possible to run builtin command for bash shell knowing only its pid? The only way I found is to trap signal like trap "history -w" SIGUSR1 and then send signal to process, but I am not sure that it is a good practice and USR1 is not used by bash, also this way I can execute max 2 commands (USR1 and USR2). And I have to define trap before using it. I am on Mac so there is not SIGRTMIN..SIGRTMAX.

• Linksys EA3500 : use WAN port as WAN + LAN possible?

  I'm waiting for deliver of a Linksys EA3500 router. I was wondering if it was possible to get the WAN port act as normal WAN port (Internet IP) + LAN switch ? My problem is that my Internet box is in a room with NAS and PC, and the router will be in another room with TV, PS3 and PC. The Internet box have a 4 port Gigabit switch so one cable will plug from there to the router's WAN in the other room. The router will get the Internet IP from the Internet box, but will it be possible to have private network through this link too ? I could have a first network between the Internet box and the router, and another network form router and devices but that will do double NAT for nothing... Thanks for reading me and your help !

In order to reduce downtime for the client, I am wondering if it would be possible for me to turn on replication and give it time to replicate fully, then just point the customer to the new server. The issue I have is that the server I'm moving to has existing, active databases for other customers. And, the server I'm moving from has other active customers who will not be moving at this time.   Didn't think this was directly related to programming, so thought Superuser would be better than Stack Overflow.... Is it possible to add an existing Azure VM to an Azure Virtual Network if you didn't add it to the virtual network at the time of creation? I can't see an option to change which Virtual Network the VM is connected to. Do you just have to do it at the time you create the VM, and if you don't do it then you will need to re-create the VM and delete the existing one? Example of the scenario: No VM's or Virtual Networks exist I create a VM (VM1), there is no virtual network so it isn't added to one Later I create a Virtual Network in Azure (Network1) It is possible to create another VM (VM2) and connect it to the Virtual Network (Network1), but can I connect VM1 to Network1 or must I delete VM1 and re-create it to get it connected to Network1?
