• Debian 3.1 (Sarge) init.d boot order

  I am using a TS-7800 single board computer from Technologic Systems that ships with Debian 3.1 (Sarge). I have updated it to Squeeze, but due to various driver issues I have been forced to roll back to Sarge. I am attempting to configure the various drivers and configurations needed for my application services before they start. Ideally I would call one init.d script that contains the drivers / configurations then call the other init.d scripts (one for each process). I am left scratching my head on how to guarantee the boot sequence. I know in later versions of Debian I could use the lbs-header to achieve this; but is there anything comparable to the LBS header in Sarge?

• powerpoint make computer shut down on dell optiplex 760

  hello, At my office we upgraded group of computers to windows 7 + office 2010, few of us have problem that when we work on powerpoint - once in a while the computer suddenly shut down (with out any message). Some of us - has no such problems. We checked and fount that the people who experience problems - use Dell Optiplex 760 PC, and everyone that have no problems use other models. We also found out that the processors of the 760's are not the same - some are Intel E7400 and one is Intel E8400, so I suspect that maybe the mother board is the problem Does any one no this problem? Does any one have an idea about it? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Yael

• CPU Usage at 100% with "Hardware Interrupts"

  After turning on my desktop one day, I found that my CPU usage was maxed out at 100%, with 99% of that going to hardware "Interrupts". I tried to enable/disable all my devices one by one through the device manager, and found that I could get the CPU usage used by the Interrupts down to 50% by disabling all devices labelled "USB Host Controller" (except the ones for the mouse/keyboard). I found that I also got 10-20% more from disabling "High Definition Audio Controller". Following the tutorial at: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140263-how-to-get-the-cause-of-high-cpu-usage-by-dpc-interrupt/ Led me to similar conclusions (that is, that the culprit is mostly "USB Host Controller"): I've tried updating my asus motherboard driver and my video card driver. This is on Windows 7 64 bit. I've spent hours trying to figure this out and I'm running out of ideas short of formatting (which might still not fix it!).

• Should I host my site on my own hardware for streaming media site?

  Hi, We are developing a new movie review site, more or less similar to RottenTomatoes. Now since there will be a lot of streaming of movie trailers and we are expecting medium traffic, do you think 3rd party web hosting will cost a lot? Should we rather go for our own hardware server software? We expect around 10GB of streaming to happen per month from 2 - 6 months of web site launch. Less before and more after that period. I typed: lspci and it returned: atheros communications device 1083. I have downloaded drivers. I'm trying to compile the driver.   I'm looking to retire a server which has 12GB of ECC DDR2 RAM. I'd like to upgrade my multi-purpose machine (firewall, file server, VM host for Windows Home Server, etc.) using the RAM from the server. I was just wondering: Has anyone had experience using ECC RAM in a GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (or any Gigabyte GA-G33M-XXXX motherboard for that matter)? Has anyone had experience using ECC RAM in a motherboard with a G33M chipset. I've searched everywhere and found the attitude positive of ECC memory working in a Non-ECC board, but I would like some specific positive feedback before proceeding tonight. I have to kick the entire house offline, which I don't like to do without good reason :)

• How to protect comments in Microsoft Word

  I have inserted personal comments into a Word document, which I am distributing to other authors. How do I send them the file without them being able to see my comments? I can "hide" comments by going to the Review ribbon and deselecting Comments under Show Markup, but then when I close and reopen the file, the comment reappears. The same thing happens when I choose Final instead of Final Showing Markup. Is there a way to make comments only visible to the author by whom they were written?

• Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

  I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound. • Adding Blogger template to predefined list

  I am working on updating a Blogger layout for a friend's website, and haven't had much luck in searching for this. Essentially, I want to create the template and show them before pushing it live. At present, there are lists of sample templates (Simple, Dynamic, etc), and I'd like to add mine as a clickable button for them to preview. When I attempt to import it, it is automatically published as the live template...but I don't want it to be seen before they review it. I want them to be able to switch between the current version and my version to see what is preferred. Is this even possible? It would be extraordinarily straightforward in WordPress, but I've never used blogger before...

• Can I upgrade my Soltek sl-67a-c motherboard from Pentium II to Pentium III?

  I have a Pentium III processor and I thought I would replace the Pentium II on my Soltek SL-67A-C. The motherboard has Slot 1 so the PIII fits in fine, however, when I turn on the computer the bios does not come up. I see references to a "67af3.zip" bios upgrade file out there but can't find any source to download it. • Why are they putting "processors" on hard drives?

  What does it mean when they have a processor on the hard drive, how does it work, and what benfit does it have? I don't understand - the CPU is the processor and the hard drive transfers it's contents to RAM. Do have additional processors, preprocess the data some how? Here's some examples Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB "Dual processor speed" NETGEAR ReadyNAS 312 2-Bay Diskless Network Attached Storage "Dual-core Intel 2.1GHz processor and 2GB on-board memory" and routers now have processors too, why's that nescecary? I guess it sort of makes sense - some logic needs to happen for the packets to be read in to know which ports to send them out on, but why did old routers not need them? • Windows 7 using exactly HALF the installed memory

  I've taken this directly from system information: Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB Total Physical Memory 2.00 GB Available Physical Memory 434 MB Total Virtual Memory 5.10 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.19 GB Page File Space 3.11 GB Also the BIOS reports a full 4GB available. Note the 4gb installed, yet 2gb total. I understand that on a 32 bit operating system, you'll never get the full 4gb of ram, however typically you'll get in the range of 2.5-3.2gb of ram. I have only 2gb available! My swap file goes nuts when I do anything! Note that I have dual SLI nvidia video cards, each with 512mb of on board ram, though I have the SLI feature turned off. Anybody know why Windows might claim that I have exactly 2gb of ram total? • What resolution can the eeePC 1001HA/1101HA handle with an external monitor plugged in?

  I would like to buy a new Eee PC 1001HA or 1101HA. I know the max display resolution is: 1024x600 for eeePC 1001 1366x768 for eeePC 1101 But what's the maximum resolution of the graphic board when connecting these two computers to an external LCD monitor? Let's say the external monitor supports a full HD resolution of 1920x1080. Are these eeePC graphic boards able to go up to such resolution? It's really incredible to me how such a useful piece of information is missing everywhere on every ASUS website. EeePCs are very well suited to be connected to external monitor, so I can't believe how difficult is to find out this information. I downloaded the manual, but it's not in there either. So I'm hoping somone has got one and knows the answer.

  My acer aspire laptop suddenly stopped working while it was connected to my nokia mobile modem through usb. It stopped with power swich staying on and no response to clicking off, no irregular sound, nothing but just a blank screen. I disconnected the power and battery quickly but power switch did not respond at all and even the power indicator didn't turn on again. the display was also gone after disconecting the power and removing battery. It has no response or any sign of power while both battery and power supply are working. What do you think? A completely dead mainboard?   On Windows 7 x64 Professional I am struggling to convert a basic disk to a dynamic one. Under Disk Management in the MMC the conversion is supposed to be initiated automatically, but it doesn't. My guess: because of using third-party partitioning tools there isn't enough space in front and after the partitions (system-reserved/boot + system volume) to store the required meta-data. When demoting a dynamic disk to a basic disk manually, I noticed that some space seems to be required before and after the partitions. What are the exact alignment requirements that allow the on-board tools in Windows to do the conversion?

• How do i have 4GB of video memory with a 1GB video card?

  I ran the direct X diagnostic tool to take a look at my graphics capabilities and its telling me that the approximate video memory is clocked in at 4096MB. That doesn't make any sense, how is that possible? The only things that i can think of were that DirectX was inaccurate so i looked at the graphics statistics of my computer on CPU-Z which was included with the motherboard and that's telling me i have "negative" 1988MB. Not only is that not 4096MB, but its giving me a negative number and i know for a fact that you can't have a negative amount of memory???!!! The only things i can think of that would be amplifying my video memory output is the PCIe 3.0 bus, or that the motherboard is somehow including the on board video chip set with the video card which only then is only 2GB of video memory, which still has to be being amplified by something. Any suggestions?

• Again WPA Connection problem even after changed to latest version ..please help

The WEP, WPA-PSK connections and communications between my board with linux and my desktop PC, Windows XP SP2 (with Olitec USB wireless) are fine. • Streamline Active Directory account creation via automated web site

  In my company we have high employee turnover, and hence our helpdesk receives about a dozen requests per week for new Active Directory accounts. Currently, we receive these requests simply via e-mail or voice-mail, and rarely do we have all of the information necessary to create the account. I would like to find a web application that can be used by a manager or supervisor to formalize the requests they make for AD accounts for new employees under their command. Ideally, the application would prompt for all of necessary information, and allow the helpdesk to review the requests and approve or deny each one. If approved, the application would take care of creating the account and send an e-mail to the manager. I have found several application on the Internet that handle self-service account management (i.e., password resets or update contact info), which is also nice to have, but nothing that streamlines the new account request and creation part. Can anyone make suggestions on such an application? Thanks.

• Xeon X5550 vs Six-core Opteron for database server

  I'm specing out a database server, and the price works out to be reasonably close between an Intel X5550 Quad-core and an AMD 2425HE (2.1Ghz) Six-core Opteron. I've been looking for some comparisons between the two, but the only thing useful I've found is an AnandTech Review of the 2435 which compares it to Intel Xeons, but concludes they both have their place. My load is MS SQL Server 2008, with an OLTP database that has about an equal amount of reading/writing (and it's a reasonably heavy load). So my question is, what is going to work better in this situation, assuming the drives are the same: Xeon X5550, with 16GB 1333Mhz RAM (Dell R510) or an Opteron 2425HE (2.1Ghz) or 2439SE (2.8Ghz) with 16GB of 800Mhz RAM? (Dell 2970) Note: the 2439 adds $500, but the overall pricing works out that it's not that much more than the R510. Using the 2425HE, the Dell 2970 server is slightly less than the similarly-equipped R510). If it adds a decent amount of performance, it's worthwhile to go faster. (single CPU, in both cases).

• Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

  Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well.
