  • Sysadmin Dress Code

    - by andyh_ky
What kind of dress code do you have at work as a systems administrator? Business casual, casual, some days casual, some days business casual, formal? It's safe to say "it all depends on the type of day we're planning on having" - but what happens if you need to speak to some C level personnel? Do you have a spare set of clothes?

  • How to scale out image hosting/serving?

    - by Continuation
I asked this question on stackoverflow and it was suggested that I try it here: I'm building a website where users can upload photos and I'd also convert uploaded photos into thumbnails. Planning ahead, if the website gets popular, how do I scale it out so that the images (both original and thumbnails) will be stored in and served from multiple servers? Maybe a cluster? Is there any open source software that would help me in this? Thanks.

  • Send HD video over SONET

    - by Fizzy
In an effort to test our new OC 192 network, we would like to find a way to stream HD video over it for a demonstration. We are looking for a device or combination of devices that connects to HDMI on one side and has a XFP client interface on the other. I understand this is a ridiculous request and we are planning on an "interesting" solution.

  • SQL Server 2008 - Performance impact of transactional replication?

    - by cxfx
I'm planning to set up transactional replication for a 100Gb SQL Server 2008 database. I have the distributor and publisher on the same server, and am using push subscription. Should there be a performance impact on my publisher server when it creates the initial snapshot, and synchronises it with a subscriber? From what I've tried so far on a staging server, it seems to slow right down. Is there a better way to create the initial snapshot without impacting my production publisher server?

  • How to configure bugzilla to not advance to next bug when updating?

    - by WilliamKF
By default, when you apply changes to a Bugzilla entry, the web interface advances to the next bug in your list. I would like to disable this feature since it is almost never what I desire, planning to make further updates later. Further, I often update the wrong bug subsequently due to its changing the current bug without my noticing. How do I configure Bugzilla to not advance like this?

  • secure data transport between web server and database server

    - by atypicalgeek
I asked this question in stackoverflow and it was suggested to try here so here goes... I'm planning on provisioning a web server and database server in a server farm environment. They will be in the same network but not in the same domain, both windows server 2008 and the database server is sql server 2008. My question being, what is the best way to secure data in transport between the servers? I've looked into IPSEC and SSL but not sure how to go about implementing either.

  • Will Windows XP work on a Hybrid Hard Drive?

    - by Ben Torell
I'm looking into getting the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive, and I'm planning on dual booting between Windows 7 and Windows XP. I know 7 and Vista have native support for taking advantage of the SSD portion of a hybrid drive, and I assume XP does not have any such support, but will XP still work on the drive? I would think it will, but I wanted to be sure, and the Googles are coming up empty for me on this one. Thanks!

  • Is ThinkPad X61T SD card slot SDXC compatible?

    - by trismarck
I have a Thinkpad X61T 7763 tablet and I was planning to buy a 64GB card for the SD card slot. The 64GB card supports the new SDXC standard and I'm not sure if the SD card driver / hardware can handle that. So far, I've successfully used 8GB cards in the slot, but they were SDHC ones. Thinkpad manuals don't give the answer. I wonder if anyone tried this configuration already and what was the outcome.

  • Suggestions for splitting server roles amongst Hyper-V virtual servers / RAID6 or RAID10? / AppAssure

    - by Anon
We have 2 Hyper-V hosts at present running 1 virtual server that was converted from a physical box running all roles. My plan is to split the roles over various virtual machines, upgrading to the latest software versions as I go, and use the backup server as a standby in case the main server fails. AppAssure backup software has a feature called Virtual Standby, so the VHD's can be ready to be fired up on the backup server if necessary. Off-site backups will be done via external USB drive for now. I'm just seeking some input/suggestions into how I'm planning to split the roles out amongst various virtual servers. Also, I'm curious how to setup the storage on the servers. We do not have any NAS's, SAN'S or any budget for this. What would the best RAID level be to use? I'm thinking either RAID6 (which is currently used) however I'm concerned about the write speeds, or RAID10 but again I'm worried that I can only lose 1 drive (from the same mirror) as opposed to any 2 with RAID6. I realise I have a hot swap for this, but what if a further drive fails during a rebuild? Is the write penalty of RAID6 worth the extra reliability over RAID10? Or will it be too slow with all the roles I am planning, therefore RAID10 is my only real option? The reason for the needed redundancy is I am the only technician and I'm not always on-site. Options I've considered: 1) 5 drives in RAID6 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 1 drive for hot swap - this is how it is currently setup 2) 4 drives in RAID10 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 2 drives for hot swap 3) 4 drives in RAID10 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. No drives for hot swap - While this is probably the best option with the amount of drives I have, I don't like the idea of having no hot swap 4) 3 drives in RAID6 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. 1 drive for hot swap All options give us enough storage capacity for our files, etc. We don't have any budget for extra drives or extra hot swap HD chassis for the servers. We have about 70 clients and about 150 users. • Is virtualenv suitable for a production server?

    - by gnufs
I'm planning to set up a Python app (Pyblosxom) on my server and considering to run it in its own virtualenv sandbox with --no-site-packages. I'm hoping that such a setup would be easily portable and maintainable over the years. However, I've only used virtualenv for development environments that recreate a certain server setup locally, and most sources about virtualenv seem to also mention virtualenv for such a use. Is there any drawback to running a Python app from a virtualenv on a live server?

  • MS Office on Virtual Machine (Parallels): licensing

    - by keijo
I'm running Win XP on Parallels on my two home computers (iMac and macbook pro). I'm planning to buy Office 2010 Student version and install it on my virtual xp:s. How the licensing of MS Office goes on virtual machines? I'm worried about the scenario where I have to re-install virtual machines (which happens some time), and because of that I have to install Office 2010 Student version many times. I think that the licensing of MS Office Student version allows installation only for three times?

  • Should I enter my Office product key before running sysprep?

    - by stickmangumby
I'm planning on cloning a Windows XP install, and am a little confused about sysprep. I know that it blanks out the XP product key, but what about other software? If I install Office 2007 and enter a product key, then use sysprep and create an image, will I be able to enter a new product key in clones I create from the image? Or will they all have duplicate product keys?
