• URL shortcut on the desktop doesn't show icon on Windows 7

  I added a new shortcut.url file with the following: [InternetShortcut] URL=http://test.com/ IDList= HotKey=0 IconFile=C:\Program Files\Test\logo.ico IconIndex=0 This works on XP - the shortcut displays the logo.ico. But on Windows 7, the shortcut is white, without the icon. The icon exists in the location on Windows 7. I also noticed that if I use the Windows GUI to set the icon it works. Even though I am setting it to the same icon. Is there a setting (maybe) where you have to include a path for the icon to work? How can I get it to work on Windows 7?

• How to force Windows to call the partition it installs on C:?

  I'm going to install Windows XP from a CD and want to make sure it calls the partition it lands on C:. The target partition is the first one on a SATA disk, which is not the first one in my computer. There's no IDE disk there. I don't think I can swap the disks, as I'm using a fake RAID and really don't want to get problems with it. The target partition is on a normal disk. I know it may be unimportant, but I don't want to run in any problems I can avoid. I've seen a question slightly related to it, but I'm not going to install from a USB.

  Here's my problem: I've made a shortcut on my Desktop (Windows XP (sigh)) like this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /k "mysql -u root drupal-defaultadm < ^"C:\Documents and Settings\AAA\Mes documents\Downloads\01.drupal-defaultadm.sql^" && exit" When I double click on it, the DOS prompt is opened, but I get this error: File not found. C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.24\bin> So I'm trying to do the command "by hand" and only removing the ^: C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.24\bin>mysql -u root drupal-defaultadm < "C:\Documents and Settings\AAA\Mes documents\Downloads\01.drupal-defaultadm.sql" C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.5.24\bin> And gives no error. I'm pretty sure this has to do with the whitespaces enclosed with ". How shall I do to make it work?

• Cause of lost partition replaced by 2 Raw partitions

  Hi, I had a curious problem over the weekend... My 500gb WD hard drive all of a sudden could not be discovered by xp, then when I plugged in again via USB it was being discovered as 2 separate Raw partitions that were asking to be formatted. I have never modified partitions on this drive before. I was scratching my head for about this for 20mins or so when my second 1TB external hard drive did the exact same thing(with the same sized raw partitions as the 500gb). I have since recovered the original partitions and data using Testdisk . I am more curious on the cause.... I suspect this could be a virus, however my machine hadn’t been online in a few days and AVG didn’t detect anything. Has anyone seen this before?

• Windows Desktop Randomly Switches Resolution

  Once per log in a specific account, Windows XP is switching to 800x600 and 8 (looks like) bit color. It then after a few seconds switches back to the regular settings. This, so far, has only happened, once per log in session but it is becoming very annoying for the end user. :P Any ideas? I've tried turning off hardware acceleration as well as getting rid of her picture desktop wallpaper but nothing has made a difference. Thanks for any help!

  we are planning to implement task pads in our enviroment for delegation for user administration.I have few questions regarding this. 1.) To run a taskpad (with AD users and computers) ; does the workstation contain whole set of Administrative tools oris there a way just to compy dsa.msc to all workstations and get done with? Note: All tak pads will be shared on a file share and users access them via powershell scripts. 2.) We are creating MMC's in Windows 7 and keeeping them in a share; will the work with Windows XP too or do we need to develop 2 versions of them? We are aiming to keep away software from workstations and maintain it as much as possible on centralized file shares. Please shoot me any questions or clarifications pertaining to my query.

  I start my web server as web service on Windows XP. How it was done is described here My web server is coded in ruby/sinatra and I start it in .bat file. That file is used by the service too. Manually I stop the web server by pressing CTRL+C in the dos window. How can I stop the server now as it started via service? I found out that I can stop it via taskkill /f /t /im ruby.exe Is there any way I can use the MMC stop service function to stop the web server? runweb.bat c: cd C:\web ruby C:\web\web2.rb

  My Google search for ""does installing windows format the hard disk" returns: No results found for "does installing windows format the hard disk". I was quite surprised. I'm hoping to get a quick answer here. Does an install format the hard disk, and destroy all data, including non-os/s data? -Or do you specifically have to say "format" at some point so you know you are losing everything? [I tried to go to SP3, but it doesn't work on my computer. My SP2 disk is fired. I only have a SP1 disk, with a seperate SP2 package. I can't get to Safe Mode to uninstall SP3 ("Windows XP Setup cann run under Safemode. Setup will restart now.). I don't want running the SP1 disk to destroy any non-o/s data.] Thanks.

• Printer stops printing at page 138, every time.

  I'm printing invoices from quickbooks premier 2009 and I have around 300 to print. But the job always fails at 138. It doesn't give any error messages, the print dialog box just disappears. and quickbooks acts like nothing was printed. The printer is a lexmark color laser c544n on windows xp sp3. It's pretty new. I've tried reinstalling the driver as well as change the way it spools (sending it directly to the printer). But nothing seems to work.

  If you open the Regional and Language Options (via Control Panel), and click on the Regional Options tab, then there is a drop down list of all the available locales. Where is this list populated from? (I want to compare the settings for each locale; I'm fine with how to do that, but I need a list of locale names to loop over.) EDIT: After browsing through my windows directory (should probably mention I'm using XP), the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\locale.nls looks like a plausible candidate, but it's a binary file. Is this what I should be looking at, and if so, how do I read it?

  I have a PCMCIA (Cardbus) 32bit USB 2.0 2-port card. If I plug my MP3 player in it works fine. I have a USB adapter for a hard disk drive. When I plug that into the PCMCIA USB slot the light on that hard disk flashed between red and green - it should stay green. "USB Mass Storage device" is added in the Device Manager, but no drive letter appears in My Computer. The installing device icon down by the clock never goes away. (Windows XP SP3.)

• oracle virtualbox doesn't work for host Kubuntu since Lucid Lynx 10.04

  I have a thinkpad edge 14 core i3 2.4 ghz and 4g ram; I have tried kubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 (all x64 architecture); Both oracle and ose virtualbox only works properly to install XP and windows 7 quest system on kubuntu 10.04; For every other kubuntu release since, the guest installation goes as far as formatting the virtual drive, freezes at this step, and doesn't even go as far as copying files to hard-drive to begin installation. But virtualbox has not stopped responding to commands; I can kill that one specific window with the problem installation ("machine" - "close" - "power off the machine") and start over again without having to force-kill virtualbox application. If anyone knows how I can go about addressing this problem, any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank You.

• Use only external monitor at screen's native resolution

  My laptop's screen lamp just died (I can see content on the screen if I point a light at it) and I was using it with an external monitor. I can switch from extended desktop to mirrored mode but, and here is where I need help, the resolutions don't match. The laptop's resolution is 1600x1200 and the external monitor is 1680x1050. I am ok with just using one screen ATM but I would like for it to at least use the native resolution of the external monitor. This is Windows XP and under Monitor settings I only get the resolutions for the original monitor under mirrored mode. How can I force the screen into a resolution not supported by the laptop screen but that is a native resolution for the external monitor?

  I have a PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 graphics card with 1x DVI and 2x DisplayPorts. The DVI port works fine with both my Viewsonic monitors but I cannot get either of the DPs to work using the supplied DP to DVI adapter; all I get is a "no signal" on either monitor when connected to either DP port. The NVIDIA Control Panel shows that the second monitor is not connected when in fact it is. How do I get the second monitor to work?   A client has a very important database that has not been backed up in 6 months. The PC has promptly failed. The Windows directory is corrupt, and the computer will not boot. It had a Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 database on it. I have access to the hard drive by booting in with an Ubuntu Live CD, but I am not sure if I can find the database. I am not sure what I am looking for, or where to look either. The dead machine had Windows XP on it.

• Sound leaks from speaker even when headphones are inserted

  I've a Dell Optiplex 960 (which I presume has a speaker inside the tower). This speaker is normally in use whenever I play music (lets call this "tower speaker"), and when I insert my headphones in the 3.5mm jack (of the tower), the tower speaker stops and the music is played through the headphones (an obvious thing to happen). But sometimes, the tower speaker starts playing the music even when the headphones are inserted! So, the music is played through both of them! This gets quite embarrassing. So, my question is - Is there a way to turn off this "tower speaker"? EDIT : I'm using Windows XP

• Performance Bottleneck with Photoshop CS3 on XPSP3

  I have an intel core 2 4400, with 4GB of ram running on XP 32-BIT SP3. Photoshop CS3 becomes sluggish & unresponsive even after loading up small files, and this is with only Bridge open as well, plus McAffee AV. My photos are loaded in from a USB 2 external drive, and my c: drive is used only for programs and windows itself. Even with 4GB of RAM, i am seeing the pagefile increase to 1.6GB, whilst there appears to be 1.5GB of RAM free to use. I've defragged the drive, with defraggler, and after that the only file reported to be fragmented was the pagefile itself. Anyone have any ideas what i can do to improve/solve this?

  I just bought a blue-tooth dongle about 2 days ago but for some reason I can't get it to work when my cell phone is 10 feet away . It only works when I am within 1 metre range. According to what it says in the box, the dongle is suppose to provide me with 100 metre range. I was not provided any CD/DVD driver.   I have P4 processor with nvidia card. Now if i don't connect to internet then my computer stays on for as much i can like 4-5 days. But if i plug in the ethernet wire. Do some surfing and leave computer as it is. Then computer fails. I mean The display on screen gets off Looks like something stopping the power supply to Harddisk. But motherboard stays on , FAN is still running , i can eject CD drive as well. But no display on monitor. I have to turn off and then turn on again.   I like to play some downloaded Shockwave Flash (.SWF) files without opening my internet browser. Sometime ago, I remember I could do it just double clicking on the SWF item. Then it was opening in a plain Shockwave window. Now XP won't play ball. I tried Folder Options > File types but couldn't find the associated player exe. How can I surpass this? Edit: There has to be some way to do this without a 3rd party software since I can already play SWFs on my browsers.

  The sound on my computer suddenly stopped working. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I get "No Audio Device" with everything grayed out. When I check the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" I see the following list: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port Video Codecs None of these looks like my sound card. Of course, my sound "card" is not really a sound card, it's integrated with the nVidia-nForce motherboard. I'm running Windows XP. So is one of the above my sound device, or is the OS not detecting it? If the latter, how do I get it to detect it?

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? • monitor a folder and send files via ftp to clients

  I am looking for software that will monitor a specific folder and when a file is created in it send that file off via ftp to a client associated with that folder by the software. I have tried software such as smart FTP and cute FTP and they don't seem to monitor folders very consistently. Some of the options with them were to write scripts to delete duplicated files from the transfer queue. I really don't want to have to write scripts for software I purchase. I am not opposed to needing scripting or writing it but I feel I shouldn't have to write scripting to make there software properly do some thing it says it does out of the box. I am currently trying to do this on a Windows XP box though running on a Server 2003 is an option if it would make things easier. I really just want pointed in the correct direction this is all fairly foreign to me

• Sound card problem, no audio device detected

  I bought a new sound card because my built in sound card did not function. When I open YouTube, Media Player or anything that can create a sound my computer will hang up and sometimes when I start my computer it will hang when the Windows XP sound will activate. Update: My computer has no audio. It says NO AUDIO DEVICE. I already installed Realtek AC97 and Realtek High Definition Audio Driver and I also pasted stream.dll to the Windows and system32 folders and I restarted my computer but it still says NO AUDIO DEVICE.
