  • How to make phone calls using a pc, modem, headphone and no actual phone instrument

    Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. I seem to be able to dial number using dialer.exe, though nothing seems to happen. From Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958143, it looks like dialer.exe alone is not enough for the call. Can somebody tell me how to make and receive phone call with whatever hardware I have, i.e. what software will I need. Thanks.

  • What could cause sudden crash of a MySQL 5.0.67 installation?

    I have an old Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit with MySQL 5.0.67. There's 5.7GB of data in it and it grows by about 100MB every day. About 3 days ago, the MySQL instance begin dying suddenly and quitely (no log entry) during the nightly mysqldump. What could be causing it? Upgrading MySQL is a long-term project for me, unless there happens to be a specific bug in 5.0.67 then I guess I'll just need to reprioritize. I'm hoping somebody might be familiar with this problem since this is a fairly popular version bundled with Ubuntu 8.10. Thanks

    i'm having a problem with mod_security. I have installed it, but i am not sure on how to make the rules for it, i want the rules to prevent all major attacks like cross site scripting, remote file inclusion etc i'm using mod security 2.6.5, apache 2.2 with php 5.3.10. i went to this site http://www.gotroot.com/mod_security+rules but i am not sure how to set up the rules or which one to use, or how i add them properly in httpd.conf, would someone please explain the process and also recommend rules for someone in my position?

  • Windows 7 unload driver/disconnect usb before restart

    In xp, my Tascam US 122 usb audio interface works fine. On my windows 7 computer the device works, however when i restart/shutdown it hangs at the "shutting down" screen forever. If the usb cable is removed prior to initiating restart/shutdown then everything goes fine, the computer restarts as normal. This is a known problem, running any other driver in compatibility mode doesnt fix the problem. Is there a method I can use to unload the device/drivers so that I dont have to reach round physically and disconnect the cable. Somebody suggested a spdt switch on the cable itself, but I am looking for a simpler method. Surely I can automate the unloading of the device through a script or such? Any ideas are greatly welcomed thanks

  • How do I use memmap to reserve memory on boot?

    Ive got a laptop with some corrupted ram addresses, so I'm trying to use memmap to reserve them before linux boots up. Ive been trying to use memmap=10M$1024M' as a kernel boot option, but linux crashes (with no errors) and restarts. If I use a different syntax for memmap likememmap=1023M@0M` it boots fine. Do I have to specify a certain size block to reserve or could my kernel version not support reserving memory with memmap? Maybe I'm better off using memmap=exactmap, and if so, could somebody point me to a good faq on how to use it?

  • How to check if a server runs in pressing mode

    Hi there, Layout: i have at customer side a server (win2003 R2 SP2 standard edition 32-bit) with a sql-server 2005 and some databases. This system starts with the /3GB-Switch. The system reports 3.25 GB RAM and taskmanager reports the process of sqlserver.exe with 2758255 K as the process with the highest consumption. The OS separates RAM for applications and for itself, normaly 50:50. But here we have the /3GB-Switch aktivated and i think the part for the applications is more than 50% of RAM. Knowledge (or better not knowledge): Somebody told me that if the OS runs out of memory within his part of RAM, the server runs into pressing mode. Questions: What is this pressing mode? Is pressing mode possible at all in this szenario? What should be done to get more performance out of this sql-server, beside optimizing the database and all this stuff.

  • How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

    We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

    So I was thinking about viruses recently, and wondering how exactly antiviruses keep up? Considering anybody who'd been coding for a few weeks could hack together something do do nasty, nasty things to somebody's PC, the quantity alone would make a simple list of hashes prohibitive, so how do antiviruses do it? Do they monitor process activity and have a 3 strikes rule for doing virus-like things? And if so, what's stopping it from triggering on perfectly harmless things (like me moving files around in \system32)? I did a bit of googling, but the regular places didn't particularly help, and I couldn't find a dupe here, so I thought it'd be good to ask :)

  • Script to restart BlackBerry services

    Can somebody give me a script advice/example of how to restart services? I have to restart 17 services, but the first 4 services have to be in the right order and after the restart command is given to one of the services, the next one should be started when the previous one is finished. I know I can restart a service by net command, and I can build a delay by for example a ping command that repeats for an x amount of times, but I never know in advance how long it is going to take for a service to restart.     All my life I used Microsoft Office on Windows for document writing and then Libre(Open)Office on Linux. This is not a bad software, but not perfect and I have some complaints. Now on my usual desktop I have Linux. I heard from people who work a lot with documents of different type and complexity (diagrams, articles, document design, presentation) that latex is a perfect thing. I have spent two days exploring Latex and my opinion as a beginner that it is out-of-date (the concepts of Latex language). The language is not intuitive and sometimes even complex. Can somebody advise another software product for document writing?

As, i am new to Amazon EC2 can somebody suggest me how to scale up my architecture according to traffic use? should i use separate micro instances for every app server(openfire,mysql,tomcat6) should i use single small or medium instance for whole server stack. Some factors in context: high reliance on MYSQL high memory usage due to file transfer web-application interacting with other Amazon service like S3,SES

  • What could be the maximum number of hosts on a 100BaseTX ethernet network ?

    Hello, I'm having two ip networks (192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x) bridged on a server, but all hosts (fixed IPs) are on the same physical 100BaseTX ethernet (with a daisy chain of 48ports switchs). Often, I loose link between the server and hosts of the second network. Usually if I reboot the host, the connection work again, and if I force connection to be active, the connection keep alive until I ping after a while without active connection. I'm wondering how many hosts can be connected on the same network without troubles, and eventually how many switches can be daisy chained ? I suppose maximum length between hosts to be 100meters to the hub or 200meters between extremity of the network.   • Java sound doesn't work under Linux

    I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a .wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions. Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms! Can somebody help me figure out what's wrong?

  • How do I share my iPhoto photos with my ubuntu partition?

    I have a MacBook Pro dual-booted with Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Karmic. I have recently imported hundreds of my photos into iPhoto - but I now want to be able to see them (and use them as desktop/screen saver images) from my Ubuntu partition (ie when the machine is running Ubuntu instead of MacOS). Is there an easy way to do this direct from the iPhoto library or do I have to shift them all out to an external file directory or something? Further edit - just to make it clear: I have already uploaded my photos directly into iPhoto - then spent many days categorising, tagging and uploading to flickr. Unless there's something I'm missing, I'm guessing it's likely too late to do the "don't copy into the iPhoto library" option. Happy to be proven wrong :) Perhaps somebody knows of a way to "export" the library without losing any of the current information - so that I can (from then on) keep the photos in an external library? I don't want to do this, though, if I lose the information that is currently there.

  • Cannot access any remote resource after connecting to Cisco VPN on Vista

    I have installed Cisco vpn client version 5.0.07.0290 on Vista Business SP2. I am able to successfully connnect to the vpn. But after connecting I am not able to access any resource in the vpn (like database, other computers in the network etc.). I have tried the following without any success : Older versions of the client Other vpn clients like Shrewsoft : same issue as the cisco vpn client Disabled Internet Connection Sharing service Installed the client in the root administrator account Run the installer as administrator Run the vpngui and ipsecdialer in XP compatibility mode and as administrator I am not sure how to troubleshoot this issue. Can somebody please help me in troubleshooting this issue? P.S : I've Zonealarm firewall, can that be an issue?

    What roles do the Xorg server and a window manager, for example, metacity, play in displaying windows? Does the window manager communicate with the OS or Xorg? Does Xorg then use OpenGl to display things? Can someone explain what exactly the Xorg server does, and what exactly the window manager does, and the differences between the two.
