  • What technical reasons exist for not using space characters in file names?

    Somebody I know expressed irritation today regarding those of us who tend not to use spaces in our filenames, e.g. NamingThingsLikeThis.txt -- despite most modern operating systems supporting spaces in filenames. Are there technical reasons that it's still common to see file names without (appropriate) spaces? If so, what are these technical reasons that spaces in filenames are avoided or discouraged, and in what circumstances are they relevant? The most obvious reason I could think of, and why I typically avoid it, are the extra quotes required on the command line when dealing with such files. Are there any other significant technical reasons?

  • Mounting both /dev/sda and /dev/sda1 - how can this be?

    I work on an Amazon EC2 instance that somebody else set up. We have an EBS volume mounted on /dev/sda, even though the root device is already on /dev/sda1, and we're also using `/dev/sda2' user@server:~$ mount /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw) ... (snip) /dev/sda2 on /mnt type ext3 (rw) /dev/sda on /vol type xfs (rw,noatime) ... This doesn't seem to fit with what I know about the way /dev/ works. How is this possible, and more importantly: will this cause trouble in the future? I'm running ubuntu 9.04 jaunty.

    I have a apache server which uses Reverse Proxy to connect/direct to a tomcat server. Using virtualHost, RequestHeader set X-Forwarded-Proto "http" ServerName image.abc.local DocumentRoot "/var/www/html" ProxyRequests Off ProxyTimeout 600 ProxyPass /abc http://image.abc.local:9001/abc ProxyPass /xyz http://image.abc.local:9001/xyz ProxyPassReverse /abc http://image.abc.local:9001/abc ProxyPassReverse /xyz http://image.abc.local:9001/xyz what i want to achieve here is that, when there is a REQUEST_METHOD OPTIONS i want simply return HTTP status OK (200). I dont want the request to be received by the tomcat server and process it. For performance based concerns i want this request to be handled at apache level. with all the research i was still unable to get this to run; RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} OPTIONS RewriteRule .* - [R=200m] can somebody assist me with what rewrite rule should be there? or is there an alternative to RewriteEngine?   • Commercial NAS RAID1 disks moved to Software Raid system?

    I've got a couple of commercial NAS boxes and I'm wondering if they (ReadyNas duo, DLink DNS-323) or any other NAS is suitable for having their RAIDed disks moved to a software-based NAS. To be specific, I'm a big fan of the (largely) Debian-based Ubuntu. Can the aforementioned NAS drives be migrated to Ubuntu (e.g. using the mdadm Linux command)? Secondly, is there any commercial NAS that can be migrated over?     What resources (books, Web pages etc) exist out there that: explain the causes of latency in TCP/IP-over-Ethernet networks; mention tools for looking out for things that cause latency (e.g. certain entries in netstat -s); suggest ways to tweak the Linux TCP stack to reduce TCP latency (Nagle, socket buffers etc). The closest I am aware of is this document, but it's rather brief. Alternatively, you're welcome to answer the above questions directly.

    When I type a command $ grep \\h junk then shell should interpret \\h as \h as two pairs of \ become \ each, and grep in turn, should interpret \h as \h as \ becomes \, so grep should search for a pattern \h in junk, which it is doing successfully. But it's not working for \\$. Please explain why ?

    I have Asterisk/1.8.13.1 Asterisk GUI-version : SVN--r Yes, quite old one, but I can not update it since this is installed on my Synology NAS. NAS is connected to internet thru router Asus RT-N16. I should use the following data to connect to the server: Auth name – 7499952XXXX User name/User ID/Display Name – nickname Authorization user name - [email protected] Domain - sip.beeline.ru SIP proxy server - msk.sip.beeline.ru I've also found the following string: [email protected]:password:[email protected]@msk.sip.beeline.ru:5060/7499952XXXX I've tested the parameters on my PC thru X-Lite and it works well (so, assume there is no any problem with the router, no need to do anything with router's NAS settings). But since I am quite new to Asterisk, I can not understand where to input all these data. Asterisk GUI doesn't have fields for proxy: Can somebody please help me with step-by-step instruction?     We have DFS setup using the DFS Management Administrator Tool. I turned on replication in the Distributed File System Administrator Tool as well and this morning we lost tons of files from that share. Please explain to me why this was wrong and if there is anything that can be done to repair it. (No, we don't have backups. We have some shadow copies, but those were deleted as well. We have been using DFS as its own backup)

    Sorry the title couldn't be more specific. I installed Abyss Web Server. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and I have Wireless Mobile Broadband internet. I used to be able to access (and other people on other networks) my site by entering my ip address in the browser, but after I formatted, and the installed abyss web server again, this does not work anymore. There are no errors. I CAN visit my own site by entering my ip address BUT anybody else can't do the same, it just says "connecting" in the browser's statusbar and it never changes. I have consulted the docs and have found no help. Google hasn't helped with this problem either. Can somebody please help? Thank you :)

  • Why are hard drives moving to 4096 byte sectors, vs. 512 byte sectors?

    I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the long-standing standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? Why didn't it happen sooner? Are there things to look out for when buying a 4K sector hard drive? e.g. incompatibility? Anything else we should know about 4K sectors?

I have a quad CPU, 4G Ram with two web application running, the (Down/up) is 8Mb/3Mb as ISP says, speedtest.net shows only: Ping 41ms, Download 4Mb, up: 0.16Mb thanks

  • Networking conflict - What is the most common default computer name?

    I recently had to change the name of my computer to log onto a public wi-fi spot, because a computer with my name was already logged on. (I asked a guy there what to do after it said there was already a computer named "Dell(omitted)" logged on.) I've never been at a wifi spot that you had to log into before. I didn't even notice what the computer's name was before. My question is what are the most common default computer names. I'm curious. How often does this sort of problem happen? (I read via Google that Redhat linux default to "localhost" and Toshiba laptops default to "Toshiba.") Somebody probably keeps statistics. (I was referred here from serverfault.com) Thanks

  • Take all fields in a database table and put them straight into a text file

    I have an database file (mdb) file that contains a dictionary of words. A couple thousand of them. I just need the words (in the order they are already in) put into a text file. Currently they have ID's associated with them (e.g. 1, 2, 3) but I don't need it. I just need the words. What is the best way to do this? Actually, if somebody is able to find a dictionary of English words (something along the lines of a scrabble dictionary) that is free online, I'll accept that too. I just can't seem to find any good ones online.

    Hello guys, We are using IIS 6 as our webserver. And we need to deny the access for one specif file, placed in only one specific URL, to everybody OUTSIDE the local network. In other words, if somebody is trying to access that filme/page from their own computer at home, using the internet, they must not succeed. But, if the same person try to do that at the same network of the web server, its ok. I am not sure about that, but Apache uses ORDER DENY,ALLOW. You specify the URL, allow or deny to all or to a range of IP. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • A button to set all processes to on-hold for Linux?

    When Linux starts swapping you're basically doomed. Very soon the system won't react to any input any more, but happily swap on until the end of days... Can you think of a command that holds all processes whatsoever, thus (and while) allowing you to open a clean shell where you can examine the source of the problem and kill the process which ate up all the memory? (I guess this won't be easy, because as the memory is probably completely filled up you'd need to swap out some more memory to gather space for opening a shell, on the other hand all other swapping processes must be stopped.) If you tied such a command to a hot key then maybe you can use this as an emergency button saving you a lot a time. Any ideas if this is possible at all? Has somebody tried something like this before? If one could realize this it would be a cool feature :)

  • USB drive is empty in drive management

    I've got a USB drive here, that somebody asked to try and fix. When inserting it, it shows up in explorer, but when I double click it I get a message saying "Please insert a disk into drive H:". So I went to disk management, to see if it was correctly formatted. It doesn't show up in the upper pane, and in the lower pane it tells me there is no medium in H:. After this I used chkdsk: the path is invalid. Then I tried TestDisk, which is supposed to look at raw data, and this can't even find the disk. So I'm assuming the drive is dead, even though its LED is burning. But I was wondering if there might be something else I could try? This system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit by the way. (I'm translating things from a Dutch install, so some names might be wrong)

    Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

  • Secure copy in Linux

    Hi all, I wanna simpy exchange 3 directories to a collegue's home directory (I dont have write access to that one) from my home directory, probably using secure copy if possible. I am not good with Linux command line, so I am not sure how to do that and I would very much appreciate it if somebody could help me a bit out with this. I guess it should look something like that scp -r /home/user1/directoy1 /home/user2/directoy1 scp -r /home/user1/directoy2 /home/user2/directoy2 scp -r /home/user1/directoy3 /home/user2/directoy3 Do I need to specify the login name of my collegue so that the files can be copied when he enters his password?   • Plesk and Apache configuration gives me 403 on all sites

    My friends server running Plesk 9.2 with Apache. Now there were some problems the last days where he couldn't tell me what exactly has happened. The situation now is the following: He has a lot of domains in it. When somebody visit any domain it shows up a 403. I checked the logs and saw the problem [Sun Jun 24 08:24:47 2012] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.XX] script '/srv/www/htdocs/index.php' not found or unable to stat Apache should route to '/srv/www/vhosts/domain.tld/htdocs/index.php' instead of /srv/www/htdocs/index.php It's doing that on all of the domains. Can you tell me whats wrong and how to fix it?

  • How are my DNS entries safe in a shared hosting environment?

    I'm trying to understand how DNS works in a shared hosting environment. I went to my registrar and set my name servers to my host's ns1.foo.com and ns2.foo.com. I'm using a cloud hosting provider who has a web portal where I can set my DNS entries. However I am confused by the lack of security. when I entered in the entries for my domain there was never any step to prove that I actually own that domain. What is to stop somebody else on the same hosting service (a nasty neighbor) from writing over my DNS entries and pointing my traffic to their server instead?
