• Android App - XML or java

  Hello - I am currently starting to create an app for a small charity company. But Im not entirely sure how to properly learn how to code for the Android OS. I have searched online for tutorials but most stop at the same stage and only show you how to launch the "helloWorld" app. My question is this: 1) Will using solely XML be sufficient to code an app? Does it require working in partnership with java? 2) Does anyone know of any books, recommended books of course, that break everything down for you step-by-step? Cheers

  Say you have an ASP.NET MVC project and are using a service layer, such as in this contact manager tutorial on the asp.net site: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/iteration-4-make-the-application-loosely-coupled-cs If you have viewmodels for your views, is the service layer the appropriate place to provide each viewmodel? For instance, in the service layer code sample there is a method public IEnumerable<Contact> ListContacts() { return _repository.ListContacts(); } If instead you wanted a IEnumerable, should it go in the service layer, or is there somewhere else that is the "correct" place? Perhaps more appropriately, if you have a separate viewmodel for each view associated with ContactController, should ContactManagerService have a separate method to return each viewmodel?

  I am a C# developer getting started on Objective-C / Cocoa Touch programming. I think I might have gotten some terms wrong because I keep thinking about them "the C# way". Specifically, I have come around the term "protocol" in various documentation and tutorials. In Objective-C, what exactly is a protocol ? Can it be compared to a C# interface ? Is the following declaration the same as saying "The class is implementing the protocol UITextFieldDelegate" ? • Getting search results from Twitter in php

  I'm attempting to put together a little mashup with some twitter APIs. However, the whole area is new to me (I'm more of an embedded developer dabbling). And frustratingly, every tutorial I am trying in Php is either out of date, not doing what it claims to do, it or is broken. Essentially, I just want a nice bit of example code - say, an HTML file, a connection.js for the JQuery magic, and a php file - 'getsearch' which contains the relevant Curl calls to the API to just return the results for a given search term. Followed the tutorial to the letter at http://www.reynoldsftw.com/2009/02/using-jquery-php-ajax-with-the-twitter-api/ and even downloaded the guy's code and chucked it on my webserver, but it just seems to sit there. I'm relatively competent at php and html, but it's the Curl and the JQuery side of things which is new to me, and would appreciate any thoughts, links, or code suggestions. I've attempted reading the API - but even that seems sparse - and several links are broken to their own tutorials, so that's put me off a bit for now.

• Running applictions via ruby and multi-core support? (OSX)

  Hi All, I'm looking for some tutorials/resources/tips that will show me how to run applications via a ruby script. I have several small tools that we use in our day to day operations that I want to manage their tasks in one ruby script. Basically what I'm trying to do is: run app via ruby script. (wait for result) get result code (success, or error msg) if ok, start the app on its next task. Also each of the tasks are independent so I'd like to take advantage of the 8 cores on my MacPro and run 8 instances at a time. Any resources you could point me towards would be greatly appreciated!

• NHibernate 3 and MySQL setup tutorial

  Since I have given up on using the entity framework 4 as my ORM (getting it to work with MySQL and mapping table/field names like this_table/this_field to object naming like ThisTable/ThisField is POCO) I am now looking at NHibernate as it seems the the next big well know ORM for C# that probably with not die off any time soon. I am trying to lookup some tutorials and a lot of them in the configuration section have 2-2 in it and was wondering if those configuration would work with NHibernate 3? I am just curious if the 2-2 refers to the version of NHibernate or something different.

  I have a movieclip called keyCButton that I want to add a keyboardEvent ("C" Key) to. This will play an animation from frames 2-30 with a sound. I have watched a few tutorials but still haven't gotten the correct information to make it work. The following is my code. stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, cNote); function cNote(event:KeyboardEvent):void { if (event.keyCode == Keyboard.SPACE) { keyCButton.gotoAndPlay(2) } } at frame 30 the code tells it to stop and then go back to frame 1 This works for the MouseEvent.CLICK but the KeyboardEvent does nothing.

The site has a bunch of good information on it and they've got some nice tutorials and such, but being a total novice (as far as web development goes), I'm wondering whether anyone here would recommend this. As I stated in my other question, this is a new world for me and there are a lot of directions I could go. Can you compare/contrast this and other web development you've done? • Implementing a recursive menu system a'la Joomla in CodeIgniter

  Hi I have some sites powered by Joomla, but with my current assignment I wanted to try something new and created with CodeIgniter a really basic CMS (just to suit my client's needs). Everything works fine except menus - multilevel menus like in Joomla, Drupal etc. with items and subitems... My question is: do you know of any tutorials or texts abut implementing such a structure. I've tried the recursion thinggy with while getting children's IDs move downwards from the parent while searching for the currently displayed item's ID. I've tried also the Drupalish way with having a path parameter enclosing ID's all the way from top to bottom '1/23/123/3'. But all in all it was just too chaotic - code something, try it out. If you have some idea on this topic - thanks in advice.

• Which file is the COM++ object and how do I import it to .NET?

  I'm trying to write a COM++ object wrapper around a Qt widget (control) I wrote so I can use it in future .NET projects. e.g.: public __gc class comWidget; In the compile directory are the .exe, an exe.intermediate.manifest, and the comWidget.obj, and also some other crap files (.pdb, etc). So what/how do I import into .NET? I feel like I'm missing an important step for registering the object or whatever, but all these tutorials are terrible outdated and ridiculously unhelpful (for instance, I'm using the old CLR syntax because I can't find any good docs on the new stuff, thx again M$ for being lazy faggots as usual)

  I need to knowingly isolate each row of the vCard and get its value. For instance, I want to get "5555" from X-CUSTOMFIELD. So far, my thoughts are: "X-CUSTOMFIELD;\d+" I have been looking at some tutorials and I am a little confused with what function to use? What would my regex above return? Would it give me the whole line or just the numerical part (5555)? I was thinking I i get the whole row, I can use substring to get the digits? If yes, what are the benefits of using these classes rather than im just using regular class/methods/params to create my API interface. • Debugging Drupal 6

  OK, I've read and attempted all of the tutorials I can find on being able to debug a locally installed Drupal 6 instance. I'm on Windows, 32-bit. I have access to Eclipse (obviously) as well as Visual Studio 2005/2008. I've yet to be able to get any of the Eclipse options (XDebug, Zend, etc.) working to be able to step through code, inspect variables, etc. I've heard good things about VS.PHP, but haven't committed to the $100 or whatever it is. Can some of your PHP/Drupal gurus out there tell me the best, simplest, most reliable way to debug Drupal and PHP on the Windows platform?

• Vertically center CSS techniques don't work in Chrome

  I've gone through stackoverflow questions and a whole bunch of articles on vertically centering text like the following: http://blog.themeforest.net/tutorials/vertical-centering-with-css/ None of the techniques seem to work with the latest version of Chrome. Is that just the nature of Chrome? My text just always appears at the top. It seems that whenever I use 50% or 100% as values for CSS's height or top, nothing happens. I just need a single line of text vertically centered. line-height isn't helpful because I want it centered in the middle of the browser window... I don't know how tall the browser window is going to be. UPDATE: The problem is apparently Foundation 4. Once I delete the following everything works as expected: <link href="/assets/foundation_and_overrides.css?body=1" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" /> Any idea on how to make it work with Foundation 4?

• What's the best way to implement one-dimensional collision detection?

  I'm writing a piece of simulation software, and need an efficient way to test for collisions along a line. The simulation is of a train crossing several switches on a track. When a wheel comes within N inches of the switch, the switch turns on, then turns off when the wheel leaves. Since all wheels are the same size, and all switches are the same size, I can represent them as a single coordinate X along the track. Switch distances and wheel distances don't change in relation to each other, once set. This is a fairly trivial problem when done through brute force by placing the X coordinates in lists, and traversing them, but I need a way to do so efficiently, because it needs to be extremely accurate, even when the train is moving at high speeds. There's a ton of tutorials on 2D collision detection, but I'm not sure the best way to go about this unique 1D scenario.

  I am thinking of setting up a global, default Exception handler for my (Android) Mobile application(which uses Java syntax) using Thread.setDefaultUncaughtExceptionHandler(...) call. I am thinking of just displaying an Alert Dialog with appropriate message to the user. Are there any gotchas, caveats and rules that one needs to follow when setting DefaultExceptionHandlers? Any best practices like making sure that the process is killed, full stack trace is written to logs etc. ? Links to documentation, tutorials etc. that can throw some light on this are welcome.   I have the need for an ASP.NET custom server control that will check the web.config file for a connectionstring name, prompt the user to create said connectionstring if not present, and execute create table stored procedures using the connection.
