• How do you handle live video streaming in Flash AS3?

  I've been dabbling with socket servers in Java and now I'm ready to get my feet wet with an idea I had. I would like to use python for my socket server and obviously AS3 for my client. I'm able to create a full chat using my own python socket server but I'm almost clueless what to do now that I want to add in LIVE video (want to make it a live video "chat"). I've found tutorials but they are for FMS and I can not afford that, also Red5 looked nice but couldn't find a live video tutorial off hand (plus I would have to switch to Red5 from my own socket server). So if someone could even nudge me into some resources on the subject (the subject of live video without using FMS) that would be very helpful, Google is failing me right now.

• Unknown error when creating packages with pkgbuild

  I followed several tutorials-which all appeared to say the same thing-on how to create deployable flat-packages (.pkg) using the OS X system provided pkgbuild tool. The packages was always generated just fine. They did, however, not want to be installed. Running the graphical Apple Installer or the command line interface installer aborted the installation early on giving an generic “Unknown error” after prompting for higher permissions. Hours later after closer investigation I discovered that I could not install other packages either. Not even updates and new installations from the OS X App Store. Why could I not install my own nor any other packages? What was going on?

• Tab widget example not running

  I'm trying to reproduce the tabwidget example (http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-tabwidget.html). I'm not really sure what's the problem, I got no errors while compiling, but i cannot see the application on the emulators screen. It would be excellent if maybe anyone could have a look at my classes and tell me what's my mistake? • book with good examples for each implementation?

  i've read about design patterns and it seems that there are a lot of different design patterns to use. i wonder if there are some books that acts like a reference. "you want to build a framework, then consider this, this and this pattern". also giving some examples. then jumps to another implementation eg. search engine and gives some patterns and concrete examples to use. in this way you learn about the weakness and strength about each pattern and where they will fit, instead of just reading about every design pattern decoupled from each other. are there good "reference sheets" or other tutorials good for a beginner at this? thanks

  I'm interested in getting started with Flex, as I've wanted to work with flash for quite awhile but have never liked the designer-oriented way of programming. I've heard flex can be used for free, and is programmer friendly, but I'm having some issues... I can't find any good sites with flex resources. I'm used to PHP, so maybe I'm spoiled with a full manual, comments and tutorials, but I can't even find a decent tutorial site. So, what are some good flex starts to get started, and what's a good, free IDE to program with?

• Is git suitable for one developer without server

  I am a single developer without another computer to backup my projects on. I'm looking into source controls and I came across git but all the setup tutorials are targeted to an external server. I used to use SourceGear Vault, but seeing that git is getting alot of attention, I might as well familiarize myself with it. I do not always have internet access. Is Git suitable for me? Can I be pointed in the right direction to set it up? Visual Studio 2008. Windows 7.

• Concept: Mapping irregular shapes (cartoons, sprites) to triangles in OpenGL ES

  I understand how mapping a triangle texture to a triangle works, but how do you map other things? I can't see myself mapping a circle onto a triangle. If it were a quad (square), I could see it happening, but why would a graphic not get warped on a triangle? EDIT: Bonus question: What are some good OpenGL ES tutorials online? Videos and articles count. (I've seen the Stanford University stuff on iTunes U and think it's excellent, but I want more.)

• speed up the speed of a sql query to mysql?

  in my mysql database i've got the geonames database, containing all countries, states and cities. i am using this to create a cascading menu so the user could select where he is from: country - state - county - city. but the main problem is that the query will search through all the 7 millions rows in that table each time i want to get the list of children rows, and that is taking a while 10-15 seconds. i wonder how i could speed this up: caching? table views? reorganizing table structure somehow? and most important, how do i do these things? are there good tutorials you could link to me? i appreciate all help and feedback discussing smart ways of handling this issue!

• best method of turning millions of x,y,z positions of particles into visualisation

  I'm interested in different algorithms people use to visualise millions of particles in a box. I know you can use Cloud-In-Cell, adaptive mesh, Kernel smoothing, nearest grid point methods etc to reduce the load in memory but there is very little documentation on how to do these things online. i.e. I have array with: x,y,z 1,2,3 4,5,6 6,7,8 xi,yi,zi for i = 100 million for example. I don't want a package like Mayavi/Paraview to do it, I want to code this myself then load the decomposed matrix into Mayavi (rather than on-the-fly rendering) My poor 8Gb Macbook explodes if I try and use the particle positions. Any tutorials would be appreciated.

• Calculating terrain height in 3d-space

  Hi I'm diving into 3d programming a bit and am currently learning by writing a procedural terrain generator that generates terrain based on a heightmap. I would also want to implement some physics and my first attempt at terrain collision was by simply checking the current position vs the heightmap. This however wont work well against small objects as you'd have to calculate the height by taking the heightdifference of the nearest vertices of the object and doing this every colision check is pretty slow. Beleive me I tried googling for it but there's simply so much crap and millions of blogs posting ripped-of newbie tutorials everywhere with basically no real information on the subject, I can't find anything that explains it or even names any generally used techniques. I'm not asking for code or a complete solution, but if anyone knows a particular technique good for calculating a high-res heightmap out of the already generated and smoothed terrain I would be very happy as I could look into it further when I know what I'm looking for. • DNS Lookup in simple C#/asp.net ajax call is extremely slow

  I'm running this out of the VS 2008 debugger on Windows 7, running .Net 3.5. The idea was to make all ajax requests with jQuery only, rather than .net, following some tutorials online. Default.aspx - HTML page, jquery triggers method in Default.aspx.cs http://pastebin.com/pxBvKA2H Default.aspx.cs - C# Webform, just defines a GetDate fuction, which only returns a string for now (trying to eliminate any possible issues) (can only post one hyperlink...) pastebin.com/pnHn50hu The ajax query takes longer than it should. Profiling with firebug revealed that it took 1.03 ms. 1s DNS Lookup | 26ms Waiting | 1ms Receiving EDIT: It continues to take the same set of times if you continue to click and resubmit the request. Is there anything I can do to cut down on the DNS Lookup time / what did I do wrong? Thanks for any help.

• Trouble Avoiding Microsoft Outlook's Email Warning

  I have a set of records in Microsoft Access that I am trying to send in an Email. The email feature works great. Except a warning message pops up every time a message is ready to send, and the user has to click "Allow" or "Deny" for every email sent. I looked up a workaround, and have been following the tutorial for it: http://www.everythingaccess.com/tutorials.asp?ID=Outlook-Send-E-mail-Without-Security-Warning. My problem is that when I put my message in the function it always returns false, and the message fails. Any help would be appreciated. • Where can I learn about security and online privacy?

  I'd really like to start including shopping cart functionality in my projects. At first im content relying on paypal links, but I really want to be learning about specific security threats and how to combat them. Eventually I want to feel comfortable receiving and sending customer credit card details for ecommerce. Obviously this is a common thing on the net but most tutorials and resources are content to say "it's every web developers responsibility to consider security, but we're not going to cover that here/today/ever." so, my question is, where is a good place to learn? And once I've learned, how do I stay abreast of new vulnerabilities as the web evolves?

• Drawing Sprites for iOS games on iPad

  So, I'm quite new and confused on the way to tackle creating sprites/sprite sheets for iOS games. I own the full CS5 sweet and have been told that fireworks is the best way to go for creating these (although I don't have the slightest idea in how yet and would love some tutorials/books specifying sprite sheet creation). My thoughts directed me towards tablet drawing, as I am awful at drawing with a mouse and/or tablet without a screen on it (such as a basic wacom). I was thinking about getting an iPad, as this would provide me with an iPad for testing purposes and a tablet. Does anyone know if it's possible (or even a good idea) to draw out your sprites on the iPad. Is it possible to export them out into Fireworks and such?

  Hi, I have read the doc and some tutorials to get a .kml file working launching the google maps activity. When I hosted the file in a server, this works perfectly: Intent myIntent = new Intent( android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://somedomain.com/file.kml") ); Now, reading this link on how to use intents for gmaps with the developing stage of GEO uri I can't manage how to load a kml file from within the device, I have tried with "q=file:///path-to-file.kml" and with an absolute path too. Has anyone done this yet? PS: in IRC channel recommend me to use apps based on openstreetmaps, but the docs is much more poor than the gmaps doc althought they are OS.

• Google Maps API v3... non-mobile?

  I'm trying to make a Google Maps widget for my website but all of the examples are for full-screen mobile devices. The tutorials work when I copy paste them exactly as shown but they don't seem to work when I want them to only occupy a portion of the page. From what I've read, the v3 is the best API yet (for what I need) because of its speed and compatibility with mobile devices. I plan to make a widget very similar to the MarkerClusterer example from the demo gallery but I can't get it working. Is this a common issue? I know I'm being vague but I would appreciate some help. • How can I limit the number of connections to an mssql server from my tomcat deployed java applicatio

  Hi, I have an application that is deployed on tomcat on server A and sends queries to a huge variety of mssql databases on an server B. I am concerned that my application could overload this mssql database server and would like some way to preventing it making requests to connect to any database on that server if some arbitrary number of connections were already in existence and unclosed. I am looking at using connection pooling but am under the impression that this will only pool connections to a specific database on the mssql server, I want to control the total of these combined connections that will occur to many different databases (incidentally I can only find out the names of individual db's dynamically as they change day to day). Will connection pooling take care of this for me, are am I looking at this from the wrong perspective? I have no access to the configuration of the mssql server. When I try to use the rand() function with parameters, I always get the value 41. And whenever I try to use arc4random() and random() functions, I get a LNK2019 error.
