  • Balancing heuristics (for timetable problem)

    - by genesiss
I'm writing a genetic algorithm for generating timetables. At the moment I'm using these two heuristics: Number of holes between lectures in one day (related) (less holes - bigger score) Each hour has some value, so for each timetable I sum values for hours when lectures are on. (lectures at more appropriate hours - bigger score) I want to balance these two heuristics, so the algorithm wouldn't favor neither one. What would be the best way to achieve this?

  • Storing a secret key on Android

    - by Casebash
My Android application uses a secret key to generate a token for authentication purposes. Is there a more secure way to store this than just putting this in the data store? I think for the iPhone, we store it in the keychain. I am aware of android.accounts.AccountManager, but this seems to give other applications potentially the ability to access the password (if the user selects the wrong option) and so seems less secure.

  • Friendfeed schemaless data in MYSQL

    - by John Stewart
I read an article around schema-less database which sounds cool. (http://bret.appspot.com/entry/how-friendfeed-uses-mysql) But what isn't clear to me is how do they run search queries on this data? Since the data is in JSON format how do we look for it?

  • Getting a borderless window to receive mouseMoved events (Cocoa OSX)

    - by Michael Minerva
I have a little popup window used for selecting images sorted by groups, and I would like to add a selection box around whatever image is being hovered over. I am trying to this by overriding the mouseMoved event for the window but it seems that a window that has a border-less style mask receives no mouseMoved events even if you have set setAcceptsMouseMoved events to YES. Is there anyway to make a borderless window receive this events?

  • cygwin: svn does not work anymore

    - by mtim
All of the sudden svn stopped working in cygwin installation on windows xp. when I execute svn binary, nothing happens, svn process does not even show up in the Task Manager. I've reinstalled svn but it did not help (the last resort would be to uninstall cygwin itself). Everything else in cygwin works fine: awk, python, sed, more, less, tail and etc. here is what is happening ... mt@s022 ~ $ which svn /usr/bin/svn mt@s022 ~ $ svn --version mt@s022 ~ $ svn status mt@s022 ~ $ svn info mt@s022 ~ $

  • Best IDE macro tools to combat the verbosity of Java syntax for someone with carpal tunnel?

    - by Carlsberg
I have a bad case of carpal tunnel so I'm looking for an editor that would make my Java programming less painful (literally!). Does anyone have any recommendations for tools that you can add to Eclipse, Netbeans or other IDEs to produce some of the repetitive code that's common in Java syntax? Overall what would be the best code editor for this purpose? (I'm coding on Ubuntu, in case it matters).

  • What would you suggest as a high school first language?

    - by ldigas
Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it. Edit: The assumption is that none of the pupils have been exposed to any programming in junior school. See also: What is the best way to teach young kids some basic programming concepts? • Jetty offline documentation

    - by Victor Sorokin
Is there any more-or-less comprehensive documentation for Jetty (e.g., similar to Tomcat or, really, in any form)? Theirs online wikis seems to be quite informative, but servers seem to be slow. Maybe, there some way to build docs from Jetty source distribution? I tried mvn site to no avail.

  • PHPMailer - what sending method is most appropriate?

    - by Stomped
Hello. I need to use PHPMailer to send emails out for the following reasons: small lists (less then 500) password resets general notifications, 100ish emails at a time And PHPMailer gives me the option to send via mail(), sendmail, or SMTP. Is there any reason to prefer one of these methods over the other? I don't know enough about email services in general to make an informed decision.

  • Add to SortedSet<T> and its complexity

    - by Andrei Taptunov
MSDN states the following SortedSet(T).Add Method : If Count is less than the capacity of the internal array, this method is an O(1) operation. Could someone please explain "how so"? I mean when adding new value we need to find a correct place to add a value (comparing it with another values) and internal implementation looks like a "Red-Black tree" with O (log N) insertion complexity.

  • image not shown in dvi after latexing

    - by Tim
Hi, I include several images of eps format in latex. After latex command, there are some of the images missing in the dvi file. Not sure if it is related to the image size, most of the images missing have size around 83kB while those shown up have a size less than 40kB. After conversion from dvi to ps, the images are all back. Just wonder what is the reason causing the images missing in dvi file? Thanks and regards!

  • May we have Ruby and Rails performance statistics? We're persuading the business to use Rails!

    - by thekingoftruth
We're convincing our Products officer that we want to use JRuby on Rails, and we're having a hard time coming up with some statistics which show that: Coding time is less using Rails vs. say Struts or Zend Framework or what have you. Ruby (and JRuby in particular) performance isn't horrible (anymore). Rails performance isn't bad either. If you can get us some good stats quickly, we might have a chance!

  • Implementing Skip List in C++

    - by trikker
[SOLVED] So I decided to try and create a sorted doubly linked skip list... I'm pretty sure I have a good grasp of how it works. When you insert x the program searches the base list for the appropriate place to put x (since it is sorted), (conceptually) flips a coin, and if the "coin" lands on a then that element is added to the list above it(or a new list is created with element in it), linked to the element below it, and the coin is flipped again, etc. If the "coin" lands on b at anytime then the insertion is over. You must also have a -infinite stored in every list as the starting point so that it isn't possible to insert a value that is less than the starting point (meaning that it could never be found.) To search for x, you start at the "top-left" (highest list lowest value) and "move right" to the next element. If the value is less than x than you continue to the next element, etc. until you have "gone too far" and the value is greater than x. In this case you go back to the last element and move down a level, continuing this chain until you either find x or x is never found. To delete x you simply search x and delete it every time it comes up in the lists. For now, I'm simply going to make a skip list that stores numbers. I don't think there is anything in the STL that can assist me, so I will need to create a class List that holds an integer value and has member functions, search, delete, and insert. The problem I'm having is dealing with links. I'm pretty sure I could create a class to handle the "horizontal" links with a pointer to the previous element and the element in front, but I'm not sure how to deal with the "vertical" links (point to corresponding element in other list?) If any of my logic is flawed please tell me, but my main questions are: How to deal with vertical links and whether my link idea is correct Now that I read my class List idea I'm thinking that a List should hold a vector of integers rather than a single integer. In fact I'm pretty positive, but would just like some validation. I'm assuming the coin flip would simply call int function where rand()%2 returns a value of 0 or 1 and if it's 0 then a the value "levels up" and if it's 0 then the insert is over. Is this incorrect? How to store a value similar to -infinite? Edit: I've started writing some code and am considering how to handle the List constructor....I'm guessing that on its construction, the "-infinite" value should be stored in the vectorname[0] element and I can just call insert on it after its creation to put the x in the appropriate place.

  • Looking for interesing formula

    - by Thinker
I'm creating a game, where players can make an alloy. To make it less predictable, and more interesting, I thought that durability and hardness of an alloy can't be calculated by simple formula, because it will be extremely easy to find extrema, where alloy have best statistics. So the questions is, is there any formula for a function, where extrema can be found only by investigating all points? Input values will be in percents: 0.0%-100.0%. I think, it should look like this: half sound wave

  • Drupal site requires a higher memory limit after migration? Why?

    - by oalo
Hello. We have a website which had a previous memory limit of 12 MB (12 MB in php.ini, and 16 MB in settings.php) and worked previously. After moving to a new server it started giving memory limit errors and displaying half-blank screen. We increaded the limit in both files (php.ini and settings.php) and now it works, but I dont understand how is it possible that now it needs a considerably larger amount of memory (it used to work with 12 MB, now it cont work with less than 20 MB).

  • Eclipse: Should I create a workspace for each project ?

    - by Zombies
I am simply wondering whether it is best to put all of my Eclipse projects into one workspace, or do a 1 workspace per 1 project. I am just a solo developer, for hobby more or less, but the apps I create do actually have production versions that are running on rather frequent cron jobs, so its almost like an amateur production environment. The only problems I have noticed so far is for exporting JARs, I have the potential to include source files from other projects which seems like it could get messy (maybe?).

  • avoiding the tedium of optional parameters

    - by Kyle
If I have a constructor with say 2 required parameters and 4 optional parameters, how can I avoid writing 16 constructors or even the 10 or so constructors I'd have to write if I used default parameters (which I don't like because it's poor self-documentation)? Are there any idioms or methods using templates I can use to make it less tedious? (And easier to maintain?)

  • Finding Last Fired time using a Cron Expression in Java

    - by a-sak
Is there a way in Java to find the "Last Fired Time" from a Cron Expression. E.g. If now = 25-Apr-2010 10pm, cron expression "0 15 10 ? * *" (quartz) should return me 25-Apr-2010 10:15am I do not care if we use standard cron expressions (like Unix and Quartz) or less popular ones if they can fetch me the correct "Last Fired Time"
