• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

• Will Tracking Subdomains as Single Entity with Google Analytics Help SEO? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Does Google Analytics data affect SEO? We have two subdomains, one for our blog and one for our ecommerce store. The blog serves to bring traffic and the store is how we monetize the site. We have them designed to appear as one large site, but I know google sees them as two sites. Here is how the subdomains look: www.example.com (store) blog.example.com (blog) I believe I can configure analytics to use subdomain tracking as explained here: http://support.google.com/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55524 But my question is whether this will cause google to see our 2 subdomains as one larger domain for SEO purposes. In other words, is there any relationship to how you configure google analytics and how google indexes and ranks your website(s) and pages? Is there anything I need to do in anaytics or webmaster tools to make google aware that these two subdomains work together as one website? Thanks! Sam

• Keep getting messages about internal system errors

  I keep getting popups about internal system errors (see screenshot below) on irregular intervals (several times a day), that I don't know what to do about. If I continue through the dialog and try to report the error back to the Ubuntu project, I get a message stating that development on this version of Ubuntu has been completed, and that I should ask for help here if I don't know what to do about it. I don't. If I show the details of the error message, the "executable path" parameter shows /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-intel.py. Is this a bug I should report to Launchpad, or just a configuration error somewhere? If it's a bug, how do I collect the data I (and the devs) need? Update in response to comment: I am running an ASUS N53SN, sporting an Intel Core i7 2630QM CPU and an NVidia GeForce 550M GPU.

• Unable to connect to wireless network

  A real newbie here. Just downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, put on USB stick and have booted it on my other PC after modifying the boot sequence to boot from USB before hard drive where Windows XP lives. Have no problems with Windows and my wireless but not with Ubuntu. The PC is a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. According to Windows XP , the wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, my IP address is 192.168.0.193, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, assigned by DHCP, SSID is HOME , type 802.11 and default gateway is 192.168.0.1. Ok, back to booting from USB and TRY option, I am Editing Network connections, I have created/configured "Wireless connection 1" with SSID of HOME and the only other thing I have changed is on the "Editing IPV4 routes for Wireless connection 1 I have enterred 192.168.0.193 , netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 Anyways , no go. • Boot problem with Ubuntu 11.10

  So, I am an Ubuntu newbie, and I don't know a thing about it. I tried to install restricted extras (am I using it right?) through terminal, but it seems I failed :) maybe because during installation the internet connection crashed... anyway, I restarted and I got the Ubuntu intro screen at the boot, and then a black screen appeared with this information: checking battery state I restarted and it showed something else, so I rebooted for 5 times. Then a screen appeared *starting bluetooth *pulseaudio configured for per-user sessions saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned I tried this: My fresh installation doesn't load. (PulseAudio problem) but didn't know how to save so I just skipped to update-grub, anyway nothing helped. What do I do?

• 2D management game [on hold]

  Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

  How can I dual boot this with Windows 8? I've tried to burn to a CD, never have a enough memory or the program tells me that the CD isn't writable. So, I want to run from USB. But I never understood how to run the program from the USB, how to download it on to the USB and how to set up the computer to run the USB before the Hard Drive. I am a beginner trying to learn Linux, if any one could help a newbie like me, that would be much appreciated.

  i screwed up big time. i changed the permission of /etc in ubuntu 11.10 by using following command sudo chmod 665 /etc now when ever i try to use sudo it gives the following error: sudo: can't open /etc/sudoers: Permission denied sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting any help will be greatly appreciated because i am new to ubuntu....i have already tried using su but it doesnt even login as root and even i give it the right password it always say Authentication Failure......i dont want to login as root coz its risky and even a newbie in linux like me is not stupid enough to have such control...i just want to use my sudo again......i have tried to go into recovery mode as well but i cant get in to recovery mode......HELP please!!!

  I am newbie in Linux word. I want to implement a bosh server. Because it is hard on Windows platform I decided to deploy it on a Ubuntu virtual machine via vmware. I made installation without problems. I followed the processes on this page. Now I want to test my bosh server with the command sudo bosh or sudo /etc/init.d/bosh start, after typing those I get on the terminal Starting bosh server after, nothing. I looked on the bosh.err file and I see exec: 2: /usr/local/lib/bosh/run-server.js: Permission denied I don? t know why this error with sudo.   I've successfully installed Qwt in Xubuntu 12.04(qmake - make - make install). But now I need to set the Qwt path to run time linker of Xubuntu. In manual it's given like - If you have installed a shared library it's path has to be known to the run-time linker of your operating system. On Linux systems read "man ldconfig" ( or google for it ). Another option is to use the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (on some systems LIBPATH is used instead, on MacOSX it is called DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH) environment variable. But being newbie to Linux environment, I'm not able to proceed further. Please help me with this.

  Is there any way to get ubuntu to recognise an ATI 6950? I have tried installing the proprietary ATI drivers, but these do not seem to work properly. It seems to screw up the gnome desktop, and starts booting into terminal. I'm somewhat of a linux newbie, so not really sure whats going wrong. I don't want to game on ubuntu, I just want it to recognise my dual monitor setup rather than mirroring the monitors, so any driver that does this is fine by me. It seems like the open source ATI radeon drivers will not support the 6950/6970 for some time, at least until kernel 2.6.38 is released. The card is also flashed with the 6970 firmware, not sure if this is important. I am running a 64 bit version of ubuntu, I installed ubuntu server 10.10, then installed gnome-desktop.

• Ripping MP3s in Rhythmbox Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit)?

  I installed a couple of days ago Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit). I today tried ripping a CD in the MP3 format. However, whenever I try to rip, it says it is missing an extra multimedia plugin "Gstreamer extra plug-ins (i386)". I then try to install the :i386 version of the gstreamer-ugly plugins, but then I get the same problem but with the id3-demuxer (or something similar) The Terminal output I get from both problems (but replace the "MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder" with the "ID3-demuxer" name) is: james@clefairy:~$ rhythmbox (rhythmbox:24122): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed Rhythmbox-Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox|MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder|encoder-audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1, layer=(int)3 /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/constants.py:24: Warning: g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed import gobject._gobject It doesn't help that each time I have to install/remove the entire Gstreamer-ugly collection each time - I can't find that specific file. • MVC, when to separate controllers?

  I'm starting with MVC and have a newbie question. What would be the logic criteria to define what a controller should encompass? For example, say a website has a 'help' section. In there, there are several options like: 'about us', 'return instructions', 'contact us', 'employment opportunities'. Each would then be accessed like 'mysite.com/help/aboutus', 'mysite.com/help/returns', 'mysite.com/help/contactus', etc. My question is, should I have a 'help' controller that has 'about us', 'returns', 'contact us', 'employment' as actions with their respective view, or should each of those be a different controller-action-view set? What should be the line of reasoning to determine when to separate controllers?

  I want to create to deploy a heartbeat service (a python script) as a service using Upstart. My understanding is that I've to add a /etc/init/myheartbeatservice.conf with the following contents. # my heartbeat service description "Heartbeat monitor" start on startup stop on shutdown script exec /path/to/my/python/script.py end script My script starts another service process and the monitors the processes and sends heartbeat to an outside server regularly. Are startup and shutdown the correct events ? Also my script create a new thread. I'm assuming I also need to add fork daemon to my conf file? Thanks.

• More confusion over SEO Cname and 301 redirect

I have a new domain "domain#1.mobi" Its hosted with godaddy and has a cname and forwarding, pointing it to "domain#1.elsewhere.us" It has no content. The content is all hosted on "domain#1.elsewhere.us" which is what Google is now listing in its results. I want Google to ignore that and only list "domain#1.mobi" in its listings. How do I achieve this?

  Hello all. I'm a complete newbie to using online payment systems for web projects, and can't really think of where to start. Let's assume that web system in question needs to generate some income online, and the business idea/functionality is in place, while organizing cash flow is the only unsolved problem. Points of interest are how the custom developed software interfaces to payment systems, and how the resulting income is available to the owner. • Why is it taking so long to open the Ubuntu Help Center?

  When I click on the Help Center Icon in the 'System' menu, it takes more than a minute to launch the program. More than a minute, for a text only program seeming like a website! • How do I set up XDMCP access via GDM?

  I am a newbie to ubuntu linux, and want to setup xdmcp access, so i can access it from my windows box using xming. part of it is learning exercise also, since i know i could use vnc to directly connect to ubuntu. I modified the gdm's custom.conf file like this [xdmcp] Enable=true but when i launch xlaunch, i see a blank screen, further diagnosing with wireshark, i got that the udp port 177 on the linux box is unreachable so i disabled the firewall on linux box, but still same result. I checked with nmap and there is no service listening on UDP 177 port, the gdnsetup on natty is quite different from the older version, where setting up xdmcp was in UI

• Ubuntu software center crashes when i try to download anything

  I was trying to set up an old printer by installing several drivers, and I got a problem in software center. I am unable to download anything from it. It opens, but when I try to download something it drops an error message and the installation stops. I can do all the installations from command line, so it is not a major problem, but still will be nice having it again. I reinstall it several times from terminal trying all the solutions I found in the forum, but still the problem is here. Any help is appreciated.
