• Why Oracle Data Integrator for Big Data?

  Big Data is everywhere these days - but what exactly is it? It’s data that comes from a multitude of sources – not only structured data, but unstructured data as well.  The sheer volume of data is mindboggling – here are a few examples of big data: climate information collected from sensors, social media information, digital pictures, log files, online video files, medical records or online transaction records.  These are just a few examples of what constitutes big data.   Embedded in big data is tremendous value and being able to manipulate, load, transform and analyze big data is key to enhancing productivity and competitiveness.  The value of big data lies in its propensity for greater in-depth analysis and data segmentation -- in turn giving companies detailed information on product performance, customer preferences and inventory.  Furthermore, by being able to store and create more data in digital form, “big data can unlock significant value by making information transparent and usable at much higher frequency." (McKinsey Global Institute, May 2011) Oracle's flagship product for bulk data movement and transformation, Oracle Data Integrator, is a critical component of Oracle’s Big Data strategy. ODI provides automation, bulk loading, and validation and transformation capabilities for Big Data while minimizing the complexities of using Hadoop.  Specifically, the advantages of ODI in a Big Data scenario are due to pre-built Knowledge Modules that drive processing in Hadoop. This leverages the graphical UI to load and unload data from Hadoop, perform data validations and create mapping expressions for transformations.  The Knowledge Modules provide a key jump-start and eliminate a significant amount of Hadoop development.  Using Oracle Data Integrator together with Oracle Big Data Connectors, you can simplify the complexities of mapping, accessing, and loading big data (via NoSQL or HDFS) but also correlating your enterprise data – this correlation may require integrating across heterogeneous and standards-based environments, connecting to Oracle Exadata, or sourcing via a big data platform such as Oracle Big Data Appliance. I found TechEd to be a huge, extremely well run conference filled with great speakers and passionate attendees in a top notch venue and fascinating city. As an “IT Pro” I think it is the premiere conference for Microsoft technologies in Europe. However, IMHO and those of others I trust, I didn’t think it hit the mark for developers in 2009. There was a fairly obvious reason – the PDC was scheduled to take place only a couple of weeks later which meant the “powder was being kept dry” and (IMHO) some of the best speakers on developer technologies were elsewhere. • Microsoft Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how, today, I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and "ProjectB is an unmanaged native C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

• Rotating a view of a chunked 2d tilemap

  I'm working on a top-down (oblique) tile-based engine. I would like for the tiles to have a definable height in the world, with Characters being occluded by them, etc. This has led to a desire to be able to "rotate" the view of the world, even though I'm using all hand-drawn graphics and blitting. Therefor, I need to rotate the actual world itself, or change how the Camera traverses these arrays. How can, or should, I create individual rotations of 90 degrees, when I have multi-dimensional arrays? Is it faster to actually rotate the array, to access it differently, or to create pre-computed accessor(?) arrays, something like how my chunks work? How can I rotate an individual chunk, or set of chunks? • Oracle SOA Suite, the Most Capable Tool for Every Possible Integration Challenge

  session ID: CON8601 - when: Monday, Oct. 1, 10:45am-11:45am - where: Moscone South 102 "Oracle SOA Suite, the Most Capable Tool for Every Possible Integration Challenge" is the name of the session I will be delivering at Oracle OpenWorld this year. I'm usually going for more subdued titles but decided to remove the gloves this year, at the risk of sounding arrogant! While we have a number of worthy competitors in various areas of integration no one can really compete with the breadth and reliability of Oracle SOA Suite. This session is primarily intended for people who are not yet familiar with Oracle SOA Suite (i.e. if you are an existing customer your time might be better spent at some of the other sessions we have on the topic). I will provide an overview of Oracle SOA Suite, the customers using it and the types of challenges they are solving with it: from integrating Oracle Applications (E-Business Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft, RightNow, Taleo etc.) to third-party applications (did you know that over a third of our customers actually use us to integrate SAP?), mainframes and a variety of technologies. We will talk about some emerging trends and problems that our users are solving with the product: cloud integration, B2B consolidation and mobile-enablement. I will also briefly touch upon the exciting projects we are doing with Oracle Event Processing, in the domain of "Fast Data" and "Big Data". Last but not least, I will be joined on stage by Venktesh Maudgalya, Director at Electronic Arts. Venktesh will bring his customer perspective and explain how EA leveraged Oracle SOA Suite to implement iHub, the massive integration hub that interconnects all their applications (E-BusinessSuite, Hyperion, Demantra, Peoplesoft, Salesforce.com, Kronos, Teradata, GXS etc.) and carries 3/4 of their revenue flows. • Resolution independence - resize on the fly or ship all sizes?

  My game relies heavily on textures of various sizes with some being full-screen. The game is targeted for multiple resolutions. I found that resizing textures (downsizing) works quite well for this game’s art type (it’s not Pixel Art or anything like that). I asked my artist to ensure that all textures at the edges of the screen to be created in such a way that they can safely “overflow” off screen; this means that aspect ratio is not an issue. So with no aspect ratio issues, I figured that I would simply ask my artist to create assets in very high resolution, and then resize them down to the appropriate screen resolution. The question is, when and how do I do that? Do I pre-resize everything to common resolutions in Photoshop and package all assets in the final product (increasing the size download that the user has to deal with) and then select the appropriate asset based on the detected resolution? Or do I ship with the largest set of Textures, detect the resolution on load, set a render target and draw all downsized assets to it and use that? Or for the latter, do I use some sort of a CPU-sided algorithm to resize on game load?

Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: · "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." · "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." · "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting. • How to ignore certain coding standard errors in PHP CodeSniffer

  We have a PHP 5 web application and we're currently evaluating PHP CodeSniffer in order to decide whether forcing code standards improves code quality without causing too much of a headache. If it seems good we will add a SVN pre-commit hook to ensure all new files committed on the dev branch are free from coding standard smells. Is there a way to configure PHP codeSniffer to ignore a particular type of error? or get it to treat a certain error as a warning instead? To enforce this rule, a permission is needed that can be used declaratively on the UI to hide a menu entry and programmatically in Java to check the user permission before the action is performed. Note that multiple lines of defense are what you should implement in your application development. Don't just rely on UI protection through hidden or disabled command options. To create menu protection permission for an ADF Security enable application, you choose Application | Secure | Resource Grants from the Oracle JDeveloper menu. The opened editor shows a visual representation of the jazn-data.xml file that is used at design time to define security policies and user identities for testing. An option in the Resource Grants section is to create a new Resource Type. A list of pre-defined types exists for you to create policy definitions for. Many of these pre-defined types use the ResourcePermission class. To create a custom Resource Type, for example to protect application menu functions, you click the green plus icon next to the Resource Type select list. The Create Resource Type editor that opens allows you to add a name for the resource type, a display name that is shown when granting resource permissions and a description. The ResourcePermission class name is already set. In the menu protection sample, you add the following information: Name: MenuProtection Display Name: Menu Protection Description: Permission to grant menu item permissions OK the dialog to close the resource permission creation. To create a resource policy that can be used to check user permissions at runtime, click the green plus icon in the Resources section of the Resource Grants section. In the Create Resource dialog, provide a name for the menu option you want to protect. To protect the cancel shipment menu option, create a resource with the following settings Resource Type: Menu Protection Name: Cancel Shipment Display Name: Cancel Shipment Description: Grant allows user to cancel customer good shipment   A new resource Cancel Shipmentis added to the Resources panel. Initially the resource is not granted to any user, enterprise or application role. To grant the resource, click the green plus icon in the Granted To section, select the Add Application Role option and choose one or more application roles in the opened dialog. Finally, you click the process action to define the policy. Note that permission can have multiple actions that you can grant individually to users and roles. The cancel shipment permission for example could have another action "view" defined to determine which user should see that this option exist and which users don't. To use the cancel shipment permission, select the disabled property on a command item, like af:commandMenuItem and click the arrow icon on the right. From the context menu, choose the Expression Builder entry. Expand the ADF Bindings | securityContext node and click the userGrantedResource option. Hint: You can expand the Description panel below the EL selection panel to see an example of how the grant should look like. The EL that is created needs to be manually edited to show as #{!securityContext.userGrantedResource[               'resourceName=Cancel Shipment;resourceType=MenuProtection;action=process']} OK the dialog so the permission checking EL is added as a value to the disabled property. Running the application and expanding the Shipment menu shows the Cancel Shipments menu item disabled for all users that don't have the custom menu protection resource permission granted. Note: Following the steps listed above, you create a JAAS permission and declaratively configure it for function security in an ADF application. Do you need to understand JAAS for this? No!  This is one of the benefits that you gain from using the ADF development framework. To implement multi lines of defense for your application, the action performed when clicking the enabled "Cancel Shipments" option should also check if the authenticated user is allowed to use process it. • Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  Hello. I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone about Project A and Project B: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and ProjectB is an unmanaged Visual C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

• Leadership does not see value in standard process for machine configuration and new developer orientation

  About 3 months ago our lead web developer and designer(same person) left the company, greener pastures was the reason for leaving. Good for them I say. My problem is that his department was completely undocumented. Things have been tough since the lead left, there is a lot of knowledge both theoretical knowledge we use to quote new projects and technical/implementation knowledge of our existing products that we have lost as a result of his departure. My normal role is as a product manager (for our products themselves) and as a business analyst for some of our project based consulting work. I've taught myself to code over the past year and in an effort to continue moving forward I've taken on the task of setting my laptop up as a development machine with hopes of implementing some of the easier feature requests and fixing some of the no brainer bugs that get submitted into our ticketing system. But, no one knows how to take a fresh Windows machine and configure it to work seamlessly with our production apps. I have requested my boss, who is still in contact with the developer who left, ask them to document and create a process to onboard a new developer, software installation, required packages, process to deploy to the productions application servers, etc. None of this exists, and I'm spinning my wheels trying to get my computer working as a functional development machine. But she does not seem to understand the need for such a process to exist. Apparently the new developer who replaced the one who left has been using a machine that was pre-configured for our environment, so even the new developer could not set up a new machine if we added another developer. My question is two part: Am I wrong in assuming a process to on-board and configure a new computer to be part of our development eco-system should exist? Am I being a whinny baby and should I figure the process out and create a document on my own?

• Suitability of ground fog using layered alpha quads?

  A layered approach would use a series of massive alpha-textured quads arranged parallel to the ground, intersecting all intervening terrain geometry, to provide the illusion of ground fog quite effectively from high up, looking down, and somewhat less effectively when inside the fog and looking toward the horizon (see image below). Alternatively, a shader-heavy approach would instead calculate density as function of view distance into the ground fog substrate, and output the fragment value based on that. Without having to performance-test each approach myself, I would like first to hear others' experiences (not speculation!) on what sort of performance impact the layered alpha texture approach is likely to have. I ask specifically due to the oft-cited impacts of overdraw (not sure how fill-rate bound your average desktop system is). A list of games using this approach, particularly older games, would be immensely useful: if this was viable on pre DX9/OpenGL2 hardware, it is likely to work fine for me. One big question is in regards to this sort of effect: (Image credit goes to Lume of lume.com) Notice how the vertical fog gradation is continuous / smooth. OTOH, using textured quad layers, I can only assume that layers would be mighty obvious when walking through them -- the more sparse they were, the more obvious this would be. This is in contrast to where fog planes are aligned to face the player every frame, where this coarseness would be much less obvious.

• How can I track a bug that caused a crash and was reported via apport / whoopsie?

  It used to be that when a program crashed, especially when a user was using a pre-release of Ubuntu, apport could be used to open a bug report. The user could then track the bug, see if it affected others, help fix it, etc. As of Precise 12.04, this behavior and workflow changed. As I discovered in Bug #993450 “Apport fails to submit bug report”, by default apport no longer opens a bug report (and it is awkward but not impossible to get it to do so). At the same time people are noticing a new "whoopsie" process, as described at What is the 'whoopsie' process and what does it do?. After some more googling, I dug this blueprint up, which describes the whole process: ErrorTracker - Ubuntu Wiki. (It didn't mention whoopsie or daisy, so I added them - please correct me if I got it wrong). Wow - this sounds like great work to streamline and improve the crash reporting process. I'm left with this question: how does a user learn what the status of the problem is? The blueprint now has this requirement The user should have some way to check back on the status of their crash report; e.g. have some report ID they can look at to see statistics and/or any associated bug #. E.g. provide a serial number at time of filing that they can load via a web page later on. which seems unimplemented. Is there anything available in the meantime? And how does a developer get into the game? Going to https://daisy.ubuntu.com just provides an "Incorrect Content-Type" error message. Finally, I suggest documenting the apport behavior changes in the Release Notes. It should be of interest to anyone who has been trying to help out Ubuntu.

• Handling SEO for Infinite pages that cause external slow API calls

  I have an 'infinite' amount of pages in my site which rely on an external API. Generating each page takes time (1 minute). Links in the site point to such pages, and when a users clicks them they are generated and he waits. Considering I cannot pre-create them all, I am trying to figure out the best SEO approach to handle these pages. Options: Create really simple pages for the web spiders and only real users will fetch the data and generate the page. A little bit 'afraid' google will see this as low quality content, which might also feel duplicated. Put them under a directory in my site (e.g. /non-generated/) and put a disallow in robots.txt. Problem here is I don't want users to have to deal with a different URL when wanting to share this page or make sense of it. Thought about maybe redirecting real users from this URL back to the regular hierarchy and that way 'fooling' google not to get to them. Again not sure he will like me for that. Letting him crawl these pages. Main problem is I can't control to rate of the API calls and also my site seems slower than it should from a spider's perspective (if he only crawled the generated pages, he'd think it's much faster). Which approach would you suggest?

  Overview The Workflow Analyzer is a standalone, easy to run tool created to read, validate and troubleshoot Workflow components configuration as well as runtime. It identifies areas where potential problems may arise and based on set of best practices suggests the Workflow System Administrator what to do when such potential problems are found. This tool represents a proactive way to verify Workflow configuration and runtime data to prevent issues ahead of time before they may become of more considerable impact on a production environment. Installation Since it is standalone there are no pre-requisites and runs on Oracle E-Business applications from 11.5.10 onwards. It is installed in the back-end server and can be run directly from SQL*Plus. The output of this tool is written in a HTML file friendly formatted containing the following on both workflow Components configuration and Workflow Runtime data: Workflow-related database initialization parameters Relevant Oracle E-Business profile option values Workflow-owned concurrent programs schedule and Workflow components status Workflow notification mailer configuration and throughput via related queues and table Workflow-relevant recommended and critical one-off patches as well as current code level Workflow database footprint by reading Workflow run-time tables to identify aged processes not being purged. It also checks for large open and closed processes or unhealthy looping conditions in a workflow process, among other checks. • Need to combine a color, mask, and sprite layer in a shader

  My task: to display a sprite using different team colors. I have a sprte graphic, part of which has to be displayed as a team color. The color isn't 'flat', i.e. it shades from brighter to darker. I can't "pre-build" the graphics because there are just too many, so I have to generate them at runtime. I've decided to use a shader, and supply it with a texture consisting of the team color, a texture consisting of a mask (black=no color, white=full color, gray=progressively dimmed color), and the sprite grapic, with the areas where the team color shows being transparent. I don't really understand how the manipulations work, so I'm just thrashing around, producing lots of different incorrect effects. So given tex1 through tex3, what calcs do I do in order to take the color (tex1), mask it (tex2), and apply the result to the unit if it's not zero? And would I be better off to make the mask just on/off (white/black) and put the color shading in the unit graphic?

• Sync Google Contacts with QuickBooks

  The RSSBus ADO.NET Providers offer an easy way to integrate with different data sources. In this article, we include a fully functional application that can be used to synchronize contacts between Google and QuickBooks. Like our QuickBooks ADO.NET Provider, the included application supports both the desktop versions of QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online Edition. Getting the Contacts Step 1: Google accounts include a number of contacts. To obtain a list of a user's Google Contacts, issue a query to the Contacts table. For example: SELECT * FROM Contacts. Step 2: QuickBooks stores contact information in multiple tables. Depending on your use case, you may want to synchronize your Google Contacts with QuickBooks Customers, Employees, Vendors, or a combination of the three. To get data from a specific table, issue a SELECT query to that table. For example: SELECT * FROM Customers Step 3: Retrieving all results from QuickBooks may take some time, depending on the size of your company file. To narrow your results, you may want to use a filter by including a WHERE clause in your query. For example: SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE (Name LIKE '%James%') AND IncludeJobs = 'FALSE' Synchronizing the Contacts Synchronizing the contacts is a simple process. Once the contacts from Google and the customers from QuickBooks are available, they can be compared and synchronized based on user preference. The sample application does this based on user input, but it is easy to create one that does the synchronization automatically. The INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements available in both data providers makes it easy to create, update, or delete contacts in either data source as needed. Note that this demo is built using BETA builds of the ADO.NET Provider for Google V2 and ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks V3, and will expire in 2013.
