  • javascript toolkit for offline webapps

    hi all, we're building an survey webapp which will let the user to add new records to the survey when offline and will upload when the browser reconnects with the server. We've identified that this will need offline storage and hence google gears seems to be an obvious choice (we understand that adobe Flash has Offline Storage but not sure if that is the best way). I am aware of Dojo offline javascript toolkit which uses google gears for the underlying functionality. However, dojo offline is not part of the dojo toolkit after version 1.3. (currently dojo is 1.4.2). Google gears toolkit is currently frozen except for critical vulnerability fixes (it has not been updated almost for the last 1 yr) because they think that HTML 5 is the way to go ahead. Hence, we're looking for a higher abstraction on top of Google Gears engine TODAY, AND which will (in the future) switch the underlying engine to HTML5 if the browser supports HTML5 standards. We'd love to use Dojo but they have discontinued Dojo offline -- we'd prefer something that will be maintained for some time. Which are possible good strategies, JS toolkits/libraries to use for building this webapp ? Pls. advise.

  • Silverlight DataGrid not stretching to accommodate all items in data source?

    I'm having problems getting a Silverlight DataGrid to stretch to accommodate all the items in it's dataSource. I've got a Grid that contains two DataGrids. I've tried setting height=Auto on the Grid and the DataGrids. I've tried setting HorizontalContentAlignment="Stretch" on the Grid and the DataGrids. The object tag has height="100%" I've set the Height="*" on the RowDefinitions for the Grid Any help would be very much appreciated!   • Ann Arbor Day of .NET 2010 Recap

    Had a great time at the Ann Arbor Day of .NET on Saturday.  Lots of great speakers and topics.  And chance to meet up with friends you usually only communicate with via email/twitter. My Presentation I presented "Getting up to speed with C# 3.5 — Just in time for 4.0!".  There's still a lot of devs that are either stuck in .NET 2.0 or just now moving to .NET 3.5.  This presentation gave highlights of a lot of the key features of 3.5.  I had great questions from the audience.  Afterwards, I talked with a few people who are just now getting in to 3.5 and they told me they had a lot of "A HA!" moments when something I said finally clicked and made sense from a code sample they had seen on the web.  Thanks to all who attended! A few people have asked me for the slides and demo.  The slides were nothing more than a table of contents.  90% of the presentation was spent inside Visual Studio demo'ing new techniques.  However, I have included it in the ZIP file with the sample solution.  You can download it here. Dennis Burton on MongoDB I caught Dennis Burton's presentation on MongoDB.  I was really interested in this one as I've missed the last few times Dennis had given it to local user groups.  It was very informative and I want to spend some time learning more about MongoDB.  I'm still an old-school relational guy, but I'm willing to investigate alternatives. Brian Genisio on Prism Since I'm not a Silverlight/WPF guy (yet), I wasn't sure this would interest me.  But I talked with Brian for a couple of minutes before the presentation and he convinced me to catch it.  And I'm glad he did.  Prism looks like a very nice framework for "composable UI's" in Silverlight and WPF.  I like the whole "dependency injection" feel to it.  Nice job Brian! GiveCamp Planning I spent some time Saturday working on things for the upcoming GiveCamp (which is why I only caught a few sessions).  Ann Arbor's Day of .NET and GiveCamp have both been held at Washtenaw Community College so I took some time (along with fellow GiveCamp planners Mike Eaton and John Hopkins) to check out the new location for Ann Arbor GiveCamp this year! In the past, WCC has let us use the Business Education (BE) building for our GiveCamp's.  But this year, they're moving us over to the Morris Lawrence (ML) building.  Let me tell you – this is a step UP!  In the BE building, we were spread across two floors and spread out into classrooms.  Plus, our opening and closing ceremonies were held in the Liberal Arts (LA) building – a bit of a walk from the BE building. In the ML building, we're together for the whole weekend.  We've got a large open area (which can be sectioned off if needed) for everyone to work in:   Right next to that, we have a large area where we can set up tables and eat.  And it helps that we have a wonderful view while eating (yes, that's a lake out there with a fountain): The ML building also has showers (which we'll have access to!) and it's own auditorium for our opening and closing ceremonies.   • Not able to access Silverlight.net and ONLY Silverlight.net - All other domains work!

    Alrighty folks, I have an extremely odd problem. I am able to surf the web fine with one odd (and really annoying at the moment) exception: Microsoft's Silverlight.net. Every other site that I go to works just fine. This is quite frustrating because I'm in the middle of programming a web app in Silverlight 4.0, and whenever I do a search for any code examples, tutorials, or whatnot at least 50% of the results are hosted in the silverlight.net forums. The error message that I get is: Oops! Google Chrome could not find www.silverlight.net It doesn't work in my other browsers either (both IE and FireFox). What's odd, is that while the error message would lead me to assume it's a DNS error, I can ping the URL just fine.   • Can you use ScrollIntoView() with a PagedCollectionView in a Silverlight DataGrid?

    Is it possible to scroll to a particular row (by object identity) in a Silverlight DataGrid that has an ItemsSource which is a PagedCollectionView. I am loading a list of orders that are grouped by day/status etc. I need to be able to scroll to a particular order. var pcv = new PagedCollectionView(e.Result.Orders); gridOrders.ItemsSource = pcv; Unfortunately ScrollIntoView(order) doesn't work because of the PagedCollectionView. An article on DataGrid from MSDN shows that it is possible to scroll to a group in a PagedCollectionView, but that's not really much use. foreach (CollectionViewGroup group in pcv.Groups) { dataGrid1.ScrollIntoView(group, null); dataGrid1.CollapseRowGroup(group, true); } Is there a way to do this ?

  • How can I set the maxItemsInObjectGraph property programmatically from a Silverlight Application?

    I have a Silverlight 3.0 application that is using a WCF service to communicate with the database, and when I have large amounts of data being returned from the service methods I get Service Not Found errors. I am fairly confident that the solution to it is to simply update the maxItemsInObjectGraph property, but I am creating the service client progrogrammatically and cannot find where to set this property.   • Silverlight Project - Setting Reference to Copy Local false not working.

    Why is it that when my Silverlight project is built, the output directory contains a bunch of culture specific directories: ar\System.Windows.Controls.resources.dll bg\System.Windows.Controls.resources.dll ca\System.Windows.Controls.resources.dll etc etc etc Also the root of the build output contains: System.Xml.Linq.dll System.windows.Controls.dll I have gone through the projects in my solution and made sure that "Copy Local" is set to false for all the referances of the mentioned dll files. Those 2 files were set to true, but I did switch them to false. Despite my effort to google an answer, I remain stuck.

  • How to set a RichTextBox in Silverlight 4 to fit it's parent height and maintain it on resize?

    I am having hard times figuring this out. Here is what I need: <StackPanel x:Name="container" VerticalAlignment="Stretch"> <RichTextBox Height="???" /> </StackPanel> Basically what I know I can do is to bind RichTextBox Height to it's parent's height ( Height="{Binding ElementName=container, Path=ActualHeight}". Unfortunately this only works on load, because as it seems ActualHeight and ActualWidth don't notify for changes. So what is the best way in Silverlight 4 to tell RichTextBox or TextBlock, it doesn't matter, to fill it's parent height, and maintain scrollbar if it's content height is bigger. Is the only way to bind some Resize events and maintain the height explicitly? That seems really ugly to me?

  • When to use UserControl vs. Control in Silverlight?

    I'm just getting my feet wet in Silverlight, and don't really understand the differences and pros/cons of creating a UserControl vs. creating a Control for the same task (as in when you right click on a selection in Expression Blend, for instance). It seems like selecting "Make Into Control" just creates a new template for the base type you specify, whereas creating a UserControl creates a whole new base class. Is that correct? In this particular instance, I'm creating a custom text box control that only takes numbers, and divides itself into 3 sections, storing 3 values into separate properties as pictured below. In this particular case, which would be best? Update (Additional Question): Why can't I use Template Binding with a UserControl, but I can with a Control? That's one reason I thought that making a UserControl might not be the right decision.

  • What vertex shader code should be used for a pixel shader used for simple 2D SpriteBatch drawing in XNA?

    Preface First of all, why is a vertex shader required for a SilverlightEffect (.slfx file) in Silverlight 5? I'm trying to port a simple 2D XNA game to Silverlight 5 RC, and I would like to use a basic pixel shader. This shader works great in XNA for Windows and Xbox, but I can't get it to compile with Silverlight as a SilverlightEffect. The MS blog for the Silverlight Toolkit says that "there is no difference between .slfx and .fx", but apparently this isn't quite true -- or at least SpriteBatch is working some magic for us in "regular XNA", and it isn't in "Silverlight XNA". If I try to directly copy my pixel shader file into a Silverlight project (and change it to the supported "Effect - Silverlight" importer/processor), when I try to compile I see the following error message: Invalid effect file. Unable to find vertex shader in pass "P0" Indeed, there isn't a vertex shader in my pixel shader file. I haven't needed one with my other 2D XNA apps since I'm just doing basic SpriteBatch drawing. I tried adding a vertex shader to my shader file, using Remi Gillig's comment on this Shawn Hargreaves blog post for guidance, but it doesn't quite work. The shader file successfully compiles, and I see some semblance of my game on screen, but it's tiny, twisted, repeated, and all jumbled up. So clearly something's not quite right. The Real Question So that brings me to my real question: Since a vertex shader is required, is there a basic vertex shader function that works for simple 2D SpriteBatch drawing? And if the vertex shader requires world/view/project matricies as parameters, what values am I supposed to use for a 2D game? Can any shader pros help? Thanks!

  • Do i *have* to use ObservableCollection in Silverlight WCF client?

    When accessing Silverlight in WCF you get proxies generated with ObservableCollection Thats fine when you're databinding, but a little clumsy when you're just calling a method. For instance the following service method : [OperationContract] public SearchOrdersMsgOut SearchOrders(ShippingStatusType[] shippingStatuses, string[] orderId) { } gets generated with ObservableCollection. What! They're just parameters. Why would I ever want to 'observe' them? I'm fine if I have to do this - but it seems like there should be a way to force simple array structures when I know I'm never databinding - especially on input messages. I'd much rather do this : searchCriteria.PaymentStatus = new [] { PaymentStatusType.PaymentFailed, PaymentStatusType.Unpaid }; than this : searchCriteria.PaymentStatus = new ObservableCollection<PaymentStatusType> { PaymentStatusType.PaymentFailed, PaymentStatusType.Unpaid }; Is there a way? PS. I do actually use a SearchCriteria object for my search criteria - but I simplified for this example wondering if parameters were handled differently.

" + FileHelpers.GetSpaceLeftMessage(); } But if I try to set it to an amount less than it current is, I get an error that this is not possible. 1. Is there a workaround for this, i.e. can I reduce the amount of IsolatedStorage? 2. When the user agrees to increasing IsolatedStorage, can other applications use this capacity or just the application in which he increased it?

  • How do I make a simple image-based button with visual states in Silverlight 3?

    At my previous company, we created our RIAs using Flex with graphical assets created in Flash. In Flash, you could simply lay out your graphics for different states, i.e. rollover, disabled. Now, I'm working on a Silverlight 3 project. I've been given a bunch of images that need to serve as the graphics for buttons that have a rollover, pressed, and normal state. I cannot figure out how to simply create buttons with different images for different visual states in Visual Studio 2008 or Expression Blend 3. Here's where I am currently. My button is defined like this in the XAML: <Button Style="{StaticResource MyButton}"/> The MyButton style appears as follows: <Style x:Key="MyButton" TargetType="Button"> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="Button"> <Image Source="/Assets/Graphics/mybtn_up.png" Width="54" Height="24"> <VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups> <VisualStateGroup x:Name="FocusStates"> <VisualState x:Name="Focused"/> <VisualState x:Name="Unfocused"/> </VisualStateGroup> <VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates"> <VisualState x:Name="Normal"/> <VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/> <VisualState x:Name="Pressed"/> <VisualState x:Name="Disabled"/> </VisualStateGroup> </VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups> </Image> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> I cannot figure out how to assign a different template to different states, nor how to change the image's source based on which state I'm in. How do I do this? Also, if you know of any good documentation that describes how styles work in Silverlight, that would be great.   • How to calculate the correct height for an auto-expanding textbox in Silverlight?

    In my Silverlight app I want a multi-line text box to expand every time the user hits Enter. The difficult part is how to calculate the correct height based on the number of text lines. I have tried the following but the textbox becomes too small: box.Height = box.FontSize*lineCount + box.Padding.Top + box.Padding.Bottom + box.BorderThickness.Top + box.BorderThickness.Bottom; What am I missing here? Or maybe it can be done automatically somehow? Thanks, Jacob Edit: I suspect the problem to be in the FontSize property (does it use another size unit?)

  • Silverlight Pixel Shader resource "not found"; what should the URI be?

    So I've written and compiled an HLSL pixel shader with Shazzam, placed the resulting .ps file in my project, and am trying to instantiate it. No matter what URI I put, Blend tells me that the resource can't be found whenever I try to view any xaml designer, and Visual Studio just shows me a blank page, both in design view and if I try to run the application. This is a Silverlight 4 SketchFlow project, in Blend 4 RC and Visual Studio 2010. I've tried both Resource and EmbeddedResource as the Build Action for the .ps file, neither make any difference (I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be set to Resource). I've tried the following URI formats: "ShaderFileName.ps" "/ShaderFileName.ps" "AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" "/AssemblyName;component/ShaderFileName.ps" I also tried moving the shader file from the Screens assembly to the root assembly (that's how SketchFlow projects are created) and that didn't help either. Anyone have any thoughts?

Is there any way to enable a "two-finger drag" on the Mac as you can enable mouse wheel scrolling?

  • How do I detect when a cell's value has changed in Silverlight?

    Hey folks, I'm working in Silverlight, trying to figure out how to set a grid cell font color based on the contents of the cell. I have an ObservableCollection bound to a DataGrid, and my items implement INotifyPropertyChanged so the grid updates as I change the values; it's all working perfectly, including letting me sort items and keep the sorting while I update the underlying items. I know I can use the LoadingRow event to change colors, but the only way I can get the event to fire is by changing the grids datasource, in which case my sorting goes out the window. So, what I really want is a way to either 1) loop the rows in the datagrid, find the cell I need, and change it's color or 2) implement a custom column that I can use to dynamically set the color. The problem is how to actually do either of those things :) All suggestions welcome.

  • How can I expose a service bus by a wcf service to be consumed by a silverlight client

    In a Silverlight application, instead of consuming and writing (wcf) wrappers around messages that finally get sent to the bus, I want to send use my message bus as directly as possible. My idea was to expose the service bus directly as a wcf service, or, in other terms, I want to bidirectionally pub/sub over the wire. Has this been done already? Is bi-directionality doable at all? After all, we are (are we restricted to that?) in the http domain? Lots of questions. Some head start would be greatly appreciated! I am in .NET land, with using Rhino Service Bus, but the pattern should apply to different platforms.

    Hi, I have a Silverlight 4 desktop application which I control using a touchscreen (on an HP Touchsmart). Most of the time it works fine but sometimes when clicking something everything just zooms in and every time it happens things get bigger and bigger. The only way to get the normal size again is by restarting the application. Has anybody got any idea what might be causing it ? Does not seem to happen in browser mode. Is there a way to prevent zooming? Thnx

    I'm trying to convert from a System.Drawing.Color to a Silverlight System.Windows.Media.Color. I'm actually trying to pass this color through a service. The System.Drawing.Color, passed over the wire, does not serialize the argb value independently. I can convert the argb value to a 32-bit int [DataMember] public int MyColor { get { return Color.Red.ToArgb(); } set {} } But I don't see any corresponding method in System.Windows.Media.Color to convert that back. What is the best way to do this?

  • Connecting to MSSQL Express in silverlight 4 appl, the db doesn't shows up in Management Studio Expr

    I'm using MSSQLExpress named instance in my Silverlight 4 application. The database located in the web application data folder. I attached the db via VS2010. The program works, but the db doesn't show up in Management Studio Express. If I delete the connection from within VS2010, and Try to attach to db via Management Studio Express, on writes, that the database with same the name already exists. Why the database connected via VS2010 doesn't show up in Management Studio Express? Thanks in advance Gabor

    In WPF, I get a tooltip to appear immediately like this: TextBlock tb = new TextBlock(); tb.Text = name; ToolTip tt = new ToolTip(); tt.Content = "This is some info on " + name + "."; tb.ToolTip = tt; tt.Cursor = Cursors.Help; ToolTipService.SetInitialShowDelay(tb, 0); This makes the user experience better since if the user wants to look at the tooltips of five items on the page, he doesn't have to wait that long second for each one. But since Silverlight does not have SetInitialShowDelay, what is a workaround to make the tooltip appear immediately?

    Can I pass events like key strokes to another control in Silverlight? Imagine I'm in a custom control that contains a Textbox and a Treeview. I'm listening to a Key event for the TextBox. When the user pushes the Arrow Up or Arrow Down key, I want the Treeview to behave as if it's itself who received that event, i.e. it should move the current selection up or down. The user shouldn't lose focus on the TextBox though so that they can continue typing. Is this possible? I don't want to set the selection manually on the Treeview because it has no easy MoveSelectionUp() or MoveSelectionDown() method, so I would have to duplicate that functionality which is not so trivial especially when the tree is databound and loads nodes on demand.
