• How do I use CSS to add a non-rectangular border around an image?

  Hello people, I have three images, and they are not square or rectangular in shape. They are just like face of anyone. So, basically, my images are in the size 196x196 or anything like that, but complete square or rectangle with the face in the middle and transperant background in the rest of the portion. Now, I want to remove the transperant background too and just keep the faces. Don't know if this is possible and mind you, this isn't a programming question. EDIT (from comments): How do I put a border around the shape of the image, not a rectangular one around the boundary, using CSS.

• Question on dynamic URL parsing

  I see many, many sites that have URLs for individual pages such as http://www.mysite.com/articles/this-is-article-1 http://www.mysite.com/galleries/575 And they don't redirect, they don't run slowly... I know how to parse URL's, that's easy enough. But in my mind, that seems slow and cumbersome on a dynamic site. As well, if the pages are all staticly built (hende the custom URL) then that means all components of the page are static as well... (which would be bad) I'd love to hear some ideas about how this is typically accomplished.

• Recovering the deleted data from Android SD Card ?

  I am trying to make an Android application which would try to recover deleted content from the SD Card. How feasible it is ? I have following method in mind: 1) Since, the files are not actually deleted, can I access the file system to see files which has been marked to be overwritten. 2) Or will I have do header/footer file carving ? Is it possible from the application layer of android ? I am concerned about files stored on contiguous sectors and not the fragmented once. I want to do a basic file retrieval. • PHP reading 'get' veriable that may or may not have been set

  Simply put, if you try to read the value of a get variable, what happens if said variable had not be put into the URL. Example: you request the page test.php, in that file it tries to read the value of $_GET['message']. What happens in this case? dose the value just get returned as ''? Dose this mean, that if I am always expecting a value to be entered, and am not willing to accept a value of '' that I can just do something like $foo = $_GET['bar']; if($foo == ''){ // Handle my 'error' } else { // $foo should now have a value that I can work with } Please bare in mind I know that I could use isset($_GET['bar']) But I don't just want to know if it is set, I don't care if it is or not, I just care if it has a value that is more then just an empty string.

• Strategy for Offline/Online data synchronization

  My requirement is I have server J2EE web application and client J2EE web application. Sometimes client can go offline. When client comes online he should be able to synchronize changes to and fro. Also I should be able to control which rows/tables need to be synchronized based on some filters/rules. Is there any existing Java frameworks for doing it? If I need to implement on my own, what are the different strategies that you can suggest? One solution in my mind is maintaining sql logs and executing same statements at other side during synchronization. Do you see any problems with this strategy?

• With VIM, use both snipMate and pydiction together (share the <tab> key?)

  I am trying to use snipMate and pydiction in vim together - however, both use the <tab> key to perform their genius-auto-completion-snippet-rendering-goodness-that-I-so-desire. When pydiction is installed, snipMate stops working. I assume its because they can't both own the <tab> key. How can I get them to work together? I wouldn't mind mapping one of them to a different key, but I am not really sure how to do this ... (maybe pydiction to the <ctrl-n> key so it mimics vim's autocomplete?). • Is there a declarative language for data definitions?

  Reading about WPF and thinking about my application's data store at the same time led me to wonder if there are any languages or tools that allow you to define relational data in a declarative way? A shallow Google search suggests no such thing exists. Yet it seems so obviously useful. The kind of tool I have in mind would declaratively describe (at least) entities, relationships and views is a platform-agnostic way that would act as an abstraction layer between data-driven applications and their datastores. Does any such tool exist?

• Help with complex sql query

  To make story short, i'm building self-learning banner management system. Users will be able to insert these banners to their site when banners will be shown based on sales/impressions ratio. I have 4 tables Banners bannerID int bannerImage varchar.... SmartBanners smartBannerID int smartBannerArrayID int bannerID int impressionsCount int visibility tinyint (percents) SmartBannerArrays smartBannerArrayID int userID int Statistics bannerID int saleAmountPerDay decimal... Each night i need to generate new "visibility" for each SmartBanner based on whole SmartBannerArray that same user has. So i need to get sum of impressions and sales for each bannerID in SmartBannerArray. All comes to my mind is to use double cursor, one will loop thought SmartBannerArrays get needed values for sum of impressions and sales and then inner loop which will access each SmartBanner and change it's "visibility" percentage based on (sales/impressions)/(sumOfSales/sumOfImpressions)*100 Hope you get the picture... Is there any other way to design better tables or not to use double cursor to avoid server overload ?

• Generate links for routes with non-parameter url segments on ASP.NET MVC 2

  I have a route defined with several hardcoded (non-parameter) segments: routes.MapRoute(null, "suggestion/list/by/{tag}", new { controller = "Suggestion", action = "List", tag = UrlParameter.Optional }); Suppose I'm in the Index view of SuggestionController, which has a Suggestion object for Model, how can I create a link that matches that route? I'd rather use one of the provided helpers and keep the route name as null in order to avoid hard-coding to much on my views, but I can't figure out how to user these non-parameter segments in Html.ActionLink or RouteLink methods. I've even tried to render the link using plain ol' html <a href="/suggestion/list/by/<%=Model.Tag %>"><%=Model.Tag %></a> but this somehow didn't match the route either. There's probably a very simple solution and I might be over-complicating things in mi mind, but I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Proper way in MVVM to drive visual states.

  Given a content presenter that can display one of 4 different application pages, and I want to fade/otherwise animate a transition between pages based on view model state. Ideally I'd like to have these all defined within a DataTemplate, and then trigger transitions based on an enum from the view model, so that when some enum representing state changes, the transitions trigger to the appropriate page. Is there a known best practice to handle things like this? Immediately coming to mind is the possibiltiy to use Enter and Exit actions on data triggers to play storyboards, but this definately doesn't use the parts and states model, so I'd like to shy away from that. I've also tried using the DataStateSwitchBehavior from the codeplex Expression project, but found it to be incompatable with the latest builds of WPF 4.0/Blend 4 RC's SDK. Does anyone have any ideas on how to handle this elegantly? I'm using the MVVM-Light framework. Also I'd like to point out that as long as this resides on a DataTemplate in a Resource Dictionary, code-behind is not an option without refactoring.

  Hello I'm trying to make my mind on whether to store a binary representation of an entity as its Blob property, or whether I better keep the blobs in some separate 'wrapping' class. Possible impact on memory heap and/or a query execution time are my concerns in the first case, complexity votes against the other one. I know Blobs are not indexed, i.e. index size is not what I'm worrying about. Also I assume for blobs Datastore puts defaultFetchGroup to false, but does it mean that blobs don't make a difference in queries? Regards J. Záruba

I am new at both socket connections and multi-threading all at the same time. Having a hard time getting my mind wrapped around this all at once. • Is there a more efficient way to set variables on a RadioButton's CheckChanged event?

I have to set a variable based on which one was selected.. and I've produced some very ugly code doing this.. private void Foo_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { convertSource = 1; } private void Bar_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { convertSource = 2; } private void Baz_RadioButton_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { convertSource = 3; } Now, I've been thinking about it and to be honest I thought there might have been a way to do it with a switch.. I just can't conceptualize it in my mind. If anyone could show me a more efficient way of doing this, I'd really appreciate it. What would be the use of creating a generic class that can take as type argument itself or descendants of itself. Here is example : abstract class A<E extends A> { abstract void foo(E x); } the first thing that came to mind would be a list that takes a list as parameter. Using this code feels strange, how do you declare a variable of type A ? Recursive declaration !? Does this even work ? If so did any of you see that in code ? How was it used ?

• What are the ways to do synchronized streaming video and text?

  I would like to have two streams. One being traditional streaming video and another being text. I will also build an interface that allows the user to create the text portion while watching the video. The context of these videos are usually that of an individual being filmed doing a presentation and later the next day for example, a coach will make text annotations (structured data is a plus) with the result being the text stream. It seems this is possible with Silverlight (see the article in the latest MSDN). However, what other methods are there if any? If there any, please give the reasons for why you are recommending them. Thanks. Also, I would prefer something that inst a software as a service hosted solution, but, dont let that keep you from giving an answer. Also keep in mind, the user shouldn't have to do any re-encoding of the video source, the text stream should be separate with someway to synchronize a coach's comments to an arbitrary time stamp in the video.

  I have in mind an idea for a generally accessible site that needs to allow images to be uploaded. But I'm stymied on how to prevent image spam: porn, ads in image form, etc. Assumptions: I'm assuming that the spammers are clever, even human. I'm skeptical of the efficacy of image analysis software. I do not have the resources to approve all uploads manually. I am willing to spend money on the solution -- within reason. • How much more complex is it to draw simple curves, lines and circles in OpenGL ES rather than in Qua

  Is OpenGL ES really so much faster? Why? And is it really so horrible complicated to draw such simple things in OpenGL ES compared to drawing these in Quartz 2D? For example, I have a UIView subclass with -drawRect: implemented, where I draw some lines, curves and circles. Just simple paths, with some shadow. What would I do in OpenGL ES? Isn't there this nice EAGLView layer thing? One thing that comes to mind is how do touch events go into OpenGL ES? Maybe that's the complex thing about it? Are there tutorials on basic drawing operations in OpenGL ES?
