  • Why is autologon in Windows 7 a security risk

    - by Phenom
If I set my Windows 7 account to automatically logon so I don't have to type a password, and I don't have to click my username on the logon screen, I heard it's a security risk. From Windows 7 Auto Login: Although I don’t personally recommend this, there are some people out there who don’t want to bother with using a password to protect their Windows user account. Of course, using a password in Windows isn’t required, only suggested. But even if you don’t fill one in, you still have to click your user icon to start the login process. An easier way - although again much less secure - is to enable auto-logins for your Windows PC. This is possible in Windows 7, as it was in prior versions, but it takes a little finagling to do so. (And for good reason, darn it.) What is risky about it besides people being able to logon locally? Does it make it easier for hackers to logon remoately?

  • Why is my CPU fan so loud?

    - by tiiquu
I bought an old PC to use as a second PC. Everything is fine, except for one thing. The CPU fan is terribly loud! I did a lot with PCs but I never did much with CPU fans. If I want to replace it, what do I have to look for? The fan is 8cm long on each side and 11cm diameter. It is just clipped to the cooler. The PC is a P4 3 GHz. I don't want to spend much money, as I only paid 50 euro for the whole PC. I would prefer to buy a fan for 1-3 dollar or something at eBay but I am not quite sure which one I should buy (which fits). Can you advise?

  • Why apcupsd won't see the UPS connected to the USB posrt on FreeBSD 8.0 amd64

    - by Max Kosyakov
Hello, Recently I installed an apcusbd on a FreeBSD 8.0 amd64 box via ports system. It installed perfectly but it won't run. Here what is says in the log: FATAL ERROR in generic-usb.c at line 636 Cannot find UPS device It appeared that HID driver picked the /dev/ugen4.2 which could cause the apcusb being unable to find the device. After I had discovered this, I rebuilt the kernel and removed the hid driver. Now it just shows "ugen4.2: <Tripp Lite> at usbus4" and no uhid0 device appears. Nevertheless the problem persisted. I tried to leave the DEVICE config setting blank --- won't help. Then I specified the particular device in the config, but it did not help either. Below you is the output of several commands that can provide some useful information on my case. server# /usr/local/etc/rc.d/apcupsd start Starting apcupsd. server# tail /var/log/messages | grep apcupsd Jun 17 22:30:00 server apcupsd[1520]: apcupsd FATAL ERROR in generic-usb.c at line 636 Cannot find UPS device -- For a link to detailed USB trouble shooting information, please see . • Unable to understand why Alfresco doesn't start on Tomcat

    - by Infernalsirius
Hi all, I have a problem that I've been inspecting for a while now, googling and everything but could not begin to understand. I'm really not used to java, even less tomcat. So there it is. First, the setup. Centos 5.3 on a virtualized server. Bitnami Native Alfresco stack (tomcat5.5, mysql5, java, javajdk, JDBC) Content of catalina.log. Since it's the shortest and where I found my first clue to what is going wrong: SEVERE: Error listenerStart Aug 27, 2009 5:32:58 PM org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11BaseProtocol init INFO: Initializing Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080 Aug 27, 2009 5:32:58 PM org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina load INFO: Initialization processed in 229 ms Aug 27, 2009 5:32:58 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardService start INFO: Starting service Catalina Aug 27, 2009 5:32:58 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardEngine start INFO: Starting Servlet Engine: Apache Tomcat/5.5.25 Aug 27, 2009 5:32:58 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHost start INFO: XML validation disabled Aug 27, 2009 5:34:47 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start SEVERE: Error listenerStart Aug 27, 2009 5:34:47 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start SEVERE: Context [/alfresco] startup failed due to previous errors Aug 27, 2009 5:34:48 PM org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11BaseProtocol start INFO: Starting Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080 Aug 27, 2009 5:34:48 PM org.apache.jk.common.ChannelSocket init INFO: JK: ajp13 listening on /0.0.0.0:8009 Aug 27, 2009 5:34:48 PM org.apache.jk.server.JkMain start INFO: Jk running ID=0 time=0/11 config=null Aug 27, 2009 5:34:48 PM org.apache.catalina.storeconfig.StoreLoader load INFO: Find registry server-registry.xml at classpath resource Aug 27, 2009 5:34:48 PM org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina start INFO: Server startup in 110327 ms Aug 27, 2009 5:38:27 PM org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11BaseProtocol pause INFO: Pausing Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080 Aug 27, 2009 5:38:28 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardService stop INFO: Stopping service Catalina Aug 27, 2009 5:38:29 PM org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11BaseProtocol destroy INFO: Stopping Coyote HTTP/1.1 on http-8080 There's the content of catalina.out, it seems to be a stack trace or application trace of the error, is that right? • Why did my DocumentRoot change?

    - by Josh K
My document root (suddenly and unexpectedly) changed to /htdocs from /var/www. This happened after I restarted apache2. The only thing I changed was the httpd.conf file which now reads as follows: <VirtualHost *> ServerName hostname UseCanonicalName ON </VirtualHost> I've greped through the entire /etc directory looking for DocumentRoot and they all say /var/www.

  • why sendmail resolves to ISP domain?

    - by digital illusion
I wish to setup a local mail server for debugging purposes using fedora 15 I set up sendmail, but there is a problem. When I'm not connected to the internet, the local mail server delivers correctly (to localhost). And in /var/log/mail I see that I correctly delivered a mail to [email protected]: Jun 21 18:24:56 PowersourceII sendmail[6019]: p5LGOttt006019: [email protected], size=328, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<[email protected]>, relay=adriano@localhost Jun 21 18:24:56 PowersourceII sendmail[6020]: p5LGOuSV006020: from=<[email protected]>, size=506, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<[email protected]>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=PowersourceII.localdomain [127.0.0.1] Jun 21 18:24:56 PowersourceII sendmail[6019]: p5LGOttt006019: [email protected], [email protected] (500/500), delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30328, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (p5LGOuSV006020 Message accepted for delivery) When I connect, networkmanager fills in /etc/resolv.conf with: domain fastwebnet.it search fastwebnet.it localdomain nameserver 62.101.93.101 nameserver 83.103.25.250 Now sendmail does not work any longer and tries to send messages to my ISP domain, as seen in the log: Jun 21 18:40:02 PowersourceII sendmail[6348]: p5LGe1LV006348: [email protected], [email protected] (500/500), delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:01, mailer=relay, pri=30327, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (p5LGe10n006352 Message accepted for delivery) Jun 21 18:40:02 PowersourceII sendmail[6354]: p5LGe10n006352: to=<[email protected]>, delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=120651, relay=mx3.fastwebnet.it. [85.18.95.21], dsn=5.1.1, stat=User unknown As you can see, it tries to deliver a mail to [email protected], and fails The setup is working under other ISPs. How can I avoid the fastweb ISP DNS relay? Thank you

  • Why won't vyatta allow SMTP through my firewall?

    - by Solignis
I am setting up a vyatta router on VMware ESXi, But I see to have hit a major snag, I could not get my firewall and NAT to work correctly. I am not sure what was wrong with NAT but it "seems" to be working now. But the firewall is not allowing traffic from my WAN interface (eth0) to my LAN (eth1). I can confirm its the firewall because I disabled all firewall rules and everything worked with just NAT. If put the firewalls (WAN and LAN) back in place nothing can get through to port 25. I am not really sure what the issue could be I am using pretty basic firewall rules, I wrote the rules while looking at the vyatta docs so unless there is something odd with the documentation they "should" be working. Here is my NAT rules so far; vyatta@gateway# show service nat rule 20 { description "Zimbra SNAT #1" outbound-interface eth0 outside-address { address 74.XXX.XXX.XXX } source { address 10.0.0.17 } type source } rule 21 { description "Zimbra SMTP #1" destination { address 74.XXX.XXX.XXX port 25 } inbound-interface eth0 inside-address { address 10.0.0.17 } protocol tcp type destination } rule 100 { description "Default LAN -> WAN" outbound-interface eth0 outside-address { address 74.XXX.XXX.XXX } source { address 10.0.0.0/24 } type source } Then here is my firewall rules, this is where I believe the problem is. vyatta@gateway# show firewall all-ping enable broadcast-ping disable conntrack-expect-table-size 4096 conntrack-hash-size 4096 conntrack-table-size 32768 conntrack-tcp-loose enable ipv6-receive-redirects disable ipv6-src-route disable ip-src-route disable log-martians enable name LAN_in { rule 100 { action accept description "Default LAN -> any" protocol all source { address 10.0.0.0/24 } } } name LAN_out { } name LOCAL { rule 100 { action accept state { established enable } } } name WAN_in { rule 20 { action accept description "Allow SMTP connections to MX01" destination { address 74.XXX.XXX.XXX port 25 } protocol tcp } rule 100 { action accept description "Allow established connections back through" state { established enable } } } name WAN_out { } receive-redirects disable send-redirects enable source-validation disable syn-cookies enable SIDENOTE To test for open ports I have using this website, http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, it showed port 25 as open without the firewall rules and closed with the firewall rules. UPDATE Just to see if the firewall was working properly I made a rule to block SSH from the WAN interface. When I checked for port 22 on my primary WAN address it said it was still open even though I outright blocked the port. Here is the rule I used; rule 21 { action reject destination { address 74.219.80.163 port 22 } protocol tcp } So now I am convinced either I am doing something wrong or the firewall is not working like it should.

  • Why doesn't my environment variable get set?

    - by reprogrammer
I have to set an environment variable called GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS to fix the problem with Eclipse buttons in Ubuntu. To set the environment variable, I added the following line to ~/.pam_environment. GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS DEFAULT=true Surprisingly, the environment variable doesn't get set when I echo $GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS in a terminal. However, all other environment variables that I've listed in ~/.pam_environment are set properly. Besides, when I switch to a tty, e.g. Alt+Ctrl+F1, the environment variable gets set correctly. Can anyone tell what's wrong with setting this environment variable in ~/.pam_environment?

  • why is mailgraph not updating ?

    - by jack
I just installed mailgraph on a Linux Ubuntu 10.04 box monitoring Postifix. Everything seems to be working fine, but the graphs are not always updating. When I refresh the web page or close the browser and come back later, the graph updates and moves to the left, showing new time, the the data line is not drawn. Sometimes it does not update for several hours. I had started, stopped and restarted mailgraph-init and that doesn't seem to make a difference. Any ideas?

  • BIND - why duplicate nameserver entries (@ and *)?

Any reason I should also duplicate nameserver entries (@ and *) ?

  • Why won't this script accept any arguments?

    - by Nate Wagar
I'm trying to write an SVN post-commit hook and, strangely, am getting hung up on what should be the easiest part. The Script: set REPO="$1" set REV="$2" set SVNBIN="/opt/CollabNet_Subversion/bin/" set SSHBIN="/usr/bin/ssh" set HOST="staging.domain.net" set timeout=30 set USERNAME="svn-usr" set E_NO_CONNECT=2 set E_WRONG_PASS=3 set E_UNKOWN=25 set CHANGED=`"$SVNBIN"svnlook changed --revision $REV $REPOS` echo "Here are changes: $CHANGED" >> /var/svn/repos/www/logs/testing echo "Command: $0; Repo: $REPO; Rev: $REV; Total: $#" >> /var/svn/repos/www/logs/testing set PROJECT "" Yet when I call it, it doesn't seem to be seeing the arguments I pass to it: /var/svn/repos/www/logs> sudo ../hooks/post-commit /var/svn/repos/www 33 svnlook: missing argument: --revision Type 'svnlook help' for usage. /var/svn/repos/www/logs> cat testing Here are changes: Command: ../hooks/post-commit; Repo: ; Rev: ; Total: 1 This is on a Solaris 10 SPARC box. I'm a bit of a script newbie, but shouldn't this be really easy??

  • Why is my system waiting for google-analytics?

    - by mikeroosa
When I go to certain websites that have google analytics, they never load up. One example is www.jquery.com. I tried in firefox, chrome, safari and explorer. Chrome & safari, flash the home page then it disappears and the screen goes white. Firefox never loads anything and the spinner just keeps spinning. Loads fine in explorer. Any ideas of what may be going on? If I use my laptop, on my same home internet connection, it works fine. This is not happening on all sites with analytics, just certain ones.

  • Why powershell runs executables in separate window?

    - by Artem Tikhomirov
On one of my servers (2008 R2) powershell refuses to run executables without extension, so typing cmd (or &cmd) in command prompt results in folowing error message: The term 'cmd' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet Invoking executable one of the following ways pops out separate window (which executes asynchronously in respect to parent). I've tried that in x86 version of powershell and in x64 one. I've tried -Noprofile argument. PATH seems to be OK. It includes System32 and all. The only way I've managed to execute cmd inline form powershell is opening standard cmd.exe shell, executing powershell.exe from it and executing cmd /c echo test from it. Inception, huh? What should I try next?

The simple insert took almost 3 minutes to complete. | InnoDB | | ===================================== 110201 15:58:10 INNODB MONITOR OUTPUT ===================================== Per second averages calculated from the last 34 seconds ---------- SEMAPHORES ---------- OS WAIT ARRAY INFO: reservation count 11963, signal count 11766 --Thread 1824 has waited at .\btr\btr0cur.c line 443 for 118.00 seconds the sema phore: S-lock on RW-latch at 09D6453C created in file .\buf\buf0buf.c line 550 a writer (thread id 1824) has reserved it in mode wait exclusive number of readers 1, waiters flag 1 Last time read locked in file .\buf\buf0flu.c line 599 Last time write locked in file .\btr\btr0cur.c line 443 Mutex spin waits 0, rounds 527817, OS waits 7133 RW-shared spins 2532, OS waits 1226; RW-excl spins 1652, OS waits 1118 ------------ TRANSACTIONS ------------ Trx id counter 0 95830 Purge done for trx's n:o < 0 95814 undo n:o < 0 0 History list length 11 LIST OF TRANSACTIONS FOR EACH SESSION: ---TRANSACTION 0 0, not started, OS thread id 3704 MySQL thread id 551, query id 2702112 localhost 127.0.0.1 root show innodb status ---TRANSACTION 0 95829, not started, OS thread id 3132 MySQL thread id 534, query id 2702020 localhost 127.0.0.1 root ---TRANSACTION 0 95828, not started, OS thread id 3152 MySQL thread id 527, query id 2701973 localhost 127.0.0.1 root ---TRANSACTION 0 95827, ACTIVE 118 sec, OS thread id 1824 inserting, thread decl ared inside InnoDB 500 mysql tables in use 1, locked 1 1 lock struct(s), heap size 320, 0 row lock(s) MySQL thread id 526, query id 2701972 localhost 127.0.0.1 root update INSERT INTO log_searchcriteria (userid,search_criteria,date,search_type) VALUES ( NAME_CONST('userid',NULL), NAME_CONST('search_criteria',_latin1' SELECT SQL_C ALC_FOUND_ROWS idx_search.CTCX_LATITUDE, idx_search.CTCX_LONGITUDE, idx_search.b uilding_id, idx_search.LN_LIST_NUMBER, idx_search.LP_LIST_PRICE, idx_search.HSN_ ADRESS_HOUSE_NUMBER, idx_search.STR_ADDRESS_STREET, idx_search.CP_ADDRESS_COMPAS S_POINT, idx_search.UN_UNIT, idx_search.CIT_CITY, idx_search.ZP_ZIP_CODE, idx_se arch.AR_AREA_NAME, idx_search.BR_BEDROOMS, idx_search.BTH_BATHS, idx_search.ST_S TATUS, idx_search.CTCX_STYLE_TYPE, idx_s -------- FILE I/O -------- I/O thread 0 state: wait Windows aio (insert buffer thread) I/O thread 1 state: wait Windows aio (log thread) I/O thread 2 state: wait Windows aio (read thread) I/O thread 3 state: wait Windows aio (write thread) Pending normal aio reads: 0, aio writes: 1, ibuf aio reads: 0, log i/o's: 0, sync i/o's: 0 Pending flushes (fsync) log: 0; buffer pool: 0 151006 OS file reads, 120758 OS file writes, 6844 OS fsyncs 0.00 reads/s, 0 avg bytes/read, 0.00 writes/s, 0.00 fsyncs/s ------------------------------------- INSERT BUFFER AND ADAPTIVE HASH INDEX ------------------------------------- Ibuf: size 1, free list len 5, seg size 7, 24664 inserts, 24664 merged recs, 4612 merges Hash table size 553253, node heap has 629 buffer(s) 0.00 hash searches/s, 0.00 non-hash searches/s --- LOG --- Log sequence number 5 2318193115 Log flushed up to 5 2318193115 Last checkpoint at 5 2318129891 0 pending log writes, 0 pending chkp writes 3036 log i/o's done, 0.00 log i/o's/second ---------------------- BUFFER POOL AND MEMORY ---------------------- Total memory allocated 213459462; in additional pool allocated 1720192 Dictionary memory allocated 240416 Buffer pool size 8192 Free buffers 0 Database pages 7563 Modified db pages 18 Pending reads 0 Pending writes: LRU 0, flush list 18, single page 0 Pages read 150973, created 28788, written 115137 0.00 reads/s, 0.00 creates/s, 0.00 writes/s No buffer pool page gets since the last printout -------------- ROW OPERATIONS -------------- 1 queries inside InnoDB, 0 queries in queue 1 read views open inside InnoDB Main thread id 2992, state: flushing buffer pool pages Number of rows inserted 794294, updated 89203, deleted 13698, read 1453084305 0.00 inserts/s, 0.00 updates/s, 0.00 deletes/s, 0.00 reads/s ---------------------------- END OF INNODB MONITOR OUTPUT ============================ Thanks

  • Why does my mail get marked as spam?

    - by schoen
I Have the server "afspraakmanager.be". It matches everything not to be a spam server.(it isn't by the way): it has reverse dns, spf,dkim,... . But hotmail marks it as spam. I think the problem is the SPF/DKIM records. when i sent an email to my gmail it says: "Received-SPF: neutral (google.com: 2a02:348:8e:6048::1 is neither permitted nor denied by best guess record for domain of [email protected]) client-ip=2a02:348:8e:6048::1; Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=neutral (google.com: 2a02:348:8e:6048::1 is neither permitted nor denied by best guess record for domain of [email protected]) [email protected]; dkim=neutral (bad format) [email protected]" So i guess my SPF and DKIM records aren't set up right. But I also don't have a clue what is wrong with them. this is the zone file: ; zone file for afspraakmanager.be $ORIGIN afspraakmanager.be. $TTL 3600 @ 86400 IN SOA ns1.eurodns.com. hostmaster.eurodns.com. • Why won't my service start, and why doesn't upstart output any errors?

    - by Alex Waters
I am trying to 'start gunicorn' as a service via upstart as user ale. I'm using gunicorn/flask on ubuntu 12.04 w/ init (upstart 1.5) Here is my /etc/init/gunicorn.conf setuid btw setgid flask script export HOME=/home/btw export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs . $HOME/.virtualenvs/default/bin/activate cd $HOME/flask workon default gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app end script It doesn't output anything other than gunicorn start/running, process 12992. If i then do 'status gunicorn' I get stop/waiting. any ideas on how to debug this? I tried following http://upstart.ubuntu.com/wiki/Debugging but it didn't help. If I do the following as user ale in the app's directory: 1. workon default 2. gunicorn -c gunicorn.py bw:app then Gunicorn runs fine. Here is ~/flask/gunicorn.py: bind = "0.0.0.0:8080" workers = 3 backlog = 2048 worker_class = "gevent" debug = True daemon = False pidfile ="/tmp/gunicorn.pid" log_level = "debug" accesslog = "/var/log/gunicorn/access.log" errorlog = "/var/log/gunicorn/error.log" user = "btw" group = "flask" Also, /var/log/error.log doesn't show anything new when I try to start the Gunicorn service. If I start it manually, it shows that the workers have been loaded, etc. Thanks for any help / suggestions!

  • Any way to know if two ip address points to the same machine?

    - by Vivek V K
Is there anyway to find if two different IP address in two different network actually points to the same physical device? I need it in Linux. Edit - I have the same server(a raspberry pi) connected via 2 intranets to my client. I don't know the IP address of the server as it is DHCP. The crude way to do is to reach the raspberry pi from one intranet and check with ifconfig to find the ipadress of the machine in the other Intranet. I want to know if there is any other way I can do it? I know the mac address of the machine. But I don't know how do I find the Ipadress based on the mac address.

  • Why is tortoise-git changing my file permissions?

    - by Erik Vold
I switch between using tortoise git and cmd line git on cygwin very frequently, and lately I've noticed that when I git status via cygwin and no changes are found, then I go to use tortoise git, and right click on a repo then use the "Git Commit - ..." menu item, I get a list of files that have supposedly changed, but of course when review the diff there are no changes to the file contents, it's actually the file permissions which appear to be changed, which git via cygwin does not recognize. So what is wrong with my tortoise git setup?

  • Why screen freezes in Windows 7 and Vista?

    - by Hasan Gürsoy
On Windows 7 and Vista I use auto-hide task bar and turn off graphic card after 1-2 minutes. When I want to use my desktop again screen freezes sometimes for 10 seconds. What I do does not effect anything immediately but cursor moves. For example if I click Firefox bookmark it opens when screen unfreezes. This happens at any of my computers and about a month after new installation. I don't think that problem is related with the drivers.

  • Why doesn't this Firefox bookmark keyword work?

    - by MiffTheFox
I have the keyword bookmark it's the same location as another one with a different keyword which works. I type google test and it takes me to http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=test, but I type g test and it takes me to the first result from I'm feeling luck as if there were no bookmark keyword there at all. Firefox 3.6 on Windows Vista.
