• help building a PC that can image a dozen hard drives simultaneously

  Not sure if this belongs on here or SuperUser, but here goes... I'm trying to figure out how to make a mass hard drive imaging PC out of COTS parts. A dedicated imaging device can do 10 drives at a time, but costs several thousand dollars. So far, I'm thinking to use several 3-port PCI-E Firewire cards, and use some kind of Firewire-to-IDE adapter to connect the drives themselves. The "software" would consist of scripting diskpart, or some other imaging utility. The problem is that I can't seem to find any sort of adapter. I could use standard external hard drive bays, but then I'd have a dozen power cables that I need to plug in. Ugly, messy, and inefficient. I picked Firewire over USB not only for better transfer speeds, but also because FW can deliver power over the bus (and could theoretically power a hard drive). Does anyone have any input on this?

• Saving Photoshop workspace doesn't remember docked panel state

  A friend of mine has recently setup his computer with a fresh install of Windows 7 and Photoshop CS5. He's having a strange issue with saved workspaces not remembering the state of docked panels. As an example, he's docked several panels on the right of the screen. The Layers panel is docked but is open, showing all layers in the document. If he saves this as a workspace, closes and reopens Photoshop and loads the workspace, the Layers panel is docked but is closed. It's not the only panel this is happening with. It's not a big problem but he's having to open 4 panels and drag them to the appropriate height each time he starts Photoshop. Does anyone know of a possible fix for this? Any insight would be great.

• Resizing partition in Windows 7: how long does it take?

  Okay, maybe this is me worrying about nothing, but... I have a 500 Gb. external drive where I want to create a second partition. I plug it into my Windows 7 box, use Disk Manager and pick the "Shrink Volume" option. It says that the maximum amount to shrink is around 150 Gb. I hit "OK" and it starts working... and it's been going on for about half an hour. The light of the external HD is constantly working. Disk Manager is greyed out and has the "does not respond" message on the top bar; basically, it's behaving as a non-responding application. Is this normal for a drive of this size, or did the application hang? How long would it typically take for a drive like this to resize its partition?

• Is it possible to run an Automator workflow when a USB device is connected?

  I would like to run an Automator workflow every time I connect a certain thumbdrive to my OS X Snow Leopard system. This workflow will copy certain files from my hard drive onto the thumb drive. I have the workflow part figured out, but I don't know how to trigger it. Ideally, I wouldn't need to do anything; it would run as soon as the drive is mounted. Is this possible? Am I approaching this from the wrong angle? The solution only really needs to work on Snow Leopard. Thanks!

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

• Is it safe to use consumer MLC SSDs in a server?

  We (and by we I mean Jeff) are looking into the possibility of using Consumer MLC SSD disks in our backup data center. We want to try to keep costs down and usable space up - so the Intel X25-E's are pretty much out at about 700$ each and 64GB of capacity. What we are thinking of doing is to buy some of the lower end SSD's that offer more capacity at a lower price point. My boss doesn't think spending about 5k for disks in servers running out of the backup data center is worth the investment. Just how dangerous of an approach is this and what can be done to mitigate these dangers?

• Enabling the Power State Change Beep

  I have a Thinkpad T430s. I found on other Thinkpads there's a beep when you plug or unplug the AC cord. While I hear a lot of people say it's annoying it seems like a very useful security feature. However, when I go into the Power Manager the option to beep on plugging/unplugging ("Power State Change Beep") isn't there, even though it's in the help file already. I know it would be easy to rig a software solution to this event, but it would kind of defeat the purpose if it doesn't beep when it's in sleep. Is there a way to get this beep on my laptop?

• Delete the pendrive contents and also trash in Mac OSX?

  I am using a Macbook pro. I copied some data from my pen drive to my mac and deleted the content by moving it to trash. After that when I see the info of pen drive it give more value than the original value. If I cleaned the content of the trash only I am able to see the correct value of pen drive and able to copy data. Has Mac been designed like that or is there some other way to delete other than using the "move to trash" option? Thanks.

  When looking for large new drives (= 1 TB) on newegg and the like, I note a number of reviews talking about drives being either D.O.A. or hitting the Click of Death (or even releasing the Magic Smoke) within a week or so of use. A portion of the reviews mention this phenomenon whether the drive in question is Western Digital or Hitachi or whatever. For those of you using Windows, what do you to: 1) Place a large initial stress on the drive to see if it can take it? For how long? 2) Test the drive afterwards (presumably with some sort of S.M.A.R.T. tool or others) to see if any negative changes have been noted? Note: This is one component of a larger plan for both high-availability and backups for my home data.

• Ubuntu karmic 9.10 Live image on USB - not working.

  This is my configuration 4GB pendrive, HP ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 image file for live USB install pendrivelinux (u910p) and ubetbootin (unetbootin.sourceforge.net) machine T61 Earlier I have installed ubuntu live image using above two mentioned utilities, numerous times. But, on a 2gb kingston flash-drive. Today, i am trying to install the live-image on 4gb HP flash-drive. Both the utilities install, i can see the files in the drive, even the wubi-installer is working, it say press "reboot" to boot in live-ubuntu. But, when i press "reboot" it does not reboot my win7. Now, when i reboot, select boot-usb in bios, it say "no boot record". I am making my usb bootable, using the utility, even then nothing is working out. Did this a few times. Is 4GB usb a prob, does anyone knows how to partition my usb in 2-2gb and install it on one partition, and then use the live image. Is it possible.

• Ubuntu 11.04 hangs at "checking battery state" while booting

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. I'm in the middle of work on a website and I have a deadline, so I need some help over here. Thanks. p.s. I tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager. Didn't work. And I'm not on a laptop.

• Read ahead buffering while playing video file from optical disc

  I was wondering if there is a program for Windows 7 (64-bit), that reads ahead the file to be played back (usually MKV files in my case) to the RAM, so the disc that the video file resides in, won't spin for the entire duration of the playback, but only every time the cache is almost empty (with big enough cache so it won't need the drive for long periods). A program that I've used in the past (called DVDIdle), was doing that universally for every video player I wanted, but they've stopped updating it 6 years ago and now it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 (tried using compatibility mode too). The method I am using now, is to either have the drive wearing down and buzzing all the time or manually copy the entire file to HDD, SSD or RamDisk and play it from there. The closest thing I've found, is a software that slows down the drive's spin speed, but I was looking for something more convenient, automated, without waiting for an entire file to be copied before starting playback or needing any HDD space, like I've used to in the past. • 2010 MBP HD speed sanity check?

  I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

• Install Linux with two hard drives

  I've a machine with two hard drives. The first one has 80 GB and the second has 120 GB. I'm about to format this machine and install Linux, and I want to install all the main partitions (/, /boot, /usr/, etc.) on the first hard disk drive (sda) and mount the /home and /var partition on second disk (sdb). Is this possible, and do I have to do something after the instalation? Or is the second hard disk drive automatically mounted? How can I do it? I won't do it, but is there any problem to mount /boot on the second hard disk drive? I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.

  I want to completely wipe all the data and both OSes (Ubuntu and Windows 7) from my hard drive. I tried DBAN but it gives me an error and does not run. I am looking for an alternative. After reading some articles online, I came to know that, using a Linux live CD, it can be done using either of following commands. a) sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda b) sudo shred -vfz -n 1 /dev/sda My questions are 1) Which option (a or b) is more secure (wipes everything) and faster? 2) Does either of the options damage the hard drive or anything? I want to use hard drive again i.e. installing Windows and Ubuntu again.

• Cause of lost partition replaced by 2 Raw partitions

  Hi, I had a curious problem over the weekend... My 500gb WD hard drive all of a sudden could not be discovered by xp, then when I plugged in again via USB it was being discovered as 2 separate Raw partitions that were asking to be formatted. I have never modified partitions on this drive before. I was scratching my head for about this for 20mins or so when my second 1TB external hard drive did the exact same thing(with the same sized raw partitions as the 500gb). I have since recovered the original partitions and data using Testdisk . I am more curious on the cause.... I suspect this could be a virus, however my machine hadn’t been online in a few days and AVG didn’t detect anything. Has anyone seen this before?

• Super slow time machine backup on my mac

  I just got a new 2TB drive which I'm trying to use as a time machine drive for my mac which has a 1TB drive. On my first time trying to back it up, I'm getting terrible throughput, not even 1GB per day (it's been running for 36 hours now). I erased the disk and tried to copy a large file to it and got the same slow speed. What can I do to diagnose this? Are there any tools which can inspect the disk and tell me if it's messed up? • Computer doesn't boot, continuously restarts; possible disk error

  I have shut down my computer two hours ago. When I open my computer it started restarting itself after showing the POST screen. I can open my computer with a Ubuntu Live CD or Windows installation CD. I can also open and boot my computer with my second drive, so I think something is wrong with my primary hard drive. Do you have any idea what the problem might be and how can I fix it? I am using an HP DV9087EA laptop and my primary disk is a WD500GB. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 on my drive.

  I replaced a battery in APC SmartUPS by hot-swapping. While the swap was all right and didn't disturb connected computers, the "Battery failed" LED on the front face kept glowing. I tried to use apctest from apcups package. Turned off the daemon and run self test (first changing BATTDATE in EEPROM). The test run fine but didn't clear the REPLACEBATT status or the glowing LED. How to clear the failed battery state without powering the UPS and connected equipment down?

• Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

  I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ?   I have over 100+ old hard drives, ranging from 100MB Quantums to 200GB WDs, most of them PATA, some SATA. Most still working. The squirrel mentality runs in my family - hoard everything, discard nothing. Thus, and this is a relevant question - any suggestions on how to put these drives to use (anything) instead of them just being deadweights and space takers around the office? Hopeful objectives and suggestions to keep in mind when you post an answer : Should showcase your geekiness, or plain fun, or serve a social purpose, or benefit the community. You do not need to limit your answer to only one hard drive - if your project needs all 100++, bring it on! Your answer need not be limited to one project per hard drive - if one hard drive can be used for multiple projects, bring it on! If additional accessories need be purchased, make sure they are common. Don't tell me to get a moon rock or something. The projects you suggested should serve a utility, and not just for decoration purposes.

• Laptop with Windows 7 turns on spontaneously while being in "Sleep" state

  I own a laptop(HP Pavilion DV7) with Windows 7 installed for already half a year. Usually when I finish my work I do not turn machine off - closing is enough to get is into "Sleep" state. Generally it's okay for me, but recent several days laptop was turning on in night spontaneously, while I was sleeping. I haven't installed any app with "turn-on by schedule on when_dooes_pc_wants"-like features. Checked if there are some "Wake-On-Lan"-like settings in BIOS, haven't found ones. The power-cable is always plugged-in. Does someone have any suggestions regarding that? p.s. laptop is placed right near by bed, so when it turns-on on night - it is quite annoying and a bit scary. I think it's trolling me, please help to stop it :) Thanks.

• Wyse Simple Imager. Unable to Create Product Directory

  I am trying to submit a post on www.technicalhelp.de, but I receive an error: Invalid Session. Please resubmit the form. This happens if I delete temporary internet files and log out and back in, and if I use a different browser, and if I use a proxy browser. Perhaps someone on this forum can help I am trying to push a Wyse device image to a USB thumb drive. The image is on a remote server, and the thumb drive is connected to my desktop PC. I am using Wyse Simple Imager to do this. When I select the following: Product: V90 Image Version: 5.010627.512 Image File: \servername\folder\OLD_Rapport\V90-withusb\9V90.i2d Almost instantly, without attempting any action, I receive the message: WyseImager Unable to Create Product Directory. Add Image Failed I have completely formatted the USB drive with FAT32. It is new out of the fox, and I can create folders in it. How do I fix this?

The problem is, neither my mother nor my sister know anything about using or maintaining a computer. What I want is to have a working base install of windows 7 and just discard everything installed, downloaded, ... when it reboots. That way I can set up a partition just for saving files and whatever they do the computer will always return to a working state at start up. can that be done? • Bringing my Dell XPS 13 ultrabook back to factory state

  I have a brand new Dell XPS 13 ultra book. After i picked it up at the store, i wiped the exising partitions which also contained the restore/rescue data, which you need to reinstall the factory version of Windows 8 that comes with this machine. I did this because we have a different MS partner edition of Windows which i prefer to run. After doing all this, i noticed that there was something wrong with machine. No real damage, but the specs are not completely as they should be. Turned out that a simple mistake while ordering. Now, long story short, the shop says that it has no problem with taking the product back, as long as it is in it's original state. And this is the problem i'm having, because i formatted the original partitions that contain that rescue option / windows 8 setup, i don't have a clue whether it's possible to get back to that original. Does anyone have an idea on how to get this fixed?
