• Searchengine bots and meta refresh for disabled Javascript

  Hi! I have a website that must have javascript turned on so it can work there is a < noscript tag that have a meta to redirect the user to a page that alerts him about the disabled javascript... I am wondering, is this a bad thing for search engine crawlers? Because I send an e-mail to myself when someone doesn't have js so I can analyze if its necessary to rebuild the website for these people, but its 100% js activated and the only ones that doesn't have JS are searchengines crawlers... I guess google, yahoo etc doesn't take the meta refresh seriously when inside a < noscript ? Should I do something to check if they are bots and do not redirect them with meta? Thanks, Joe

• onload Event in embedded SVG not calling function in attached script. Scope Issue?

  Hi So I've got an XHTML page with a script - not inline > <script type="text/javascript" > src="../global/js/scripts.js"></script> and an embedded (I tried embed and object, same behavior) SVG document with a onload="CheckIfLoaded(evt)" attribute. The problem is firefox doesn't call the CheckIfLoaded() function in scripts.js. Firebug gives me "CheckIfLoaded() is not defined" with no reference to any line numbers. I can't find any information regarding the scope of javascript functions with respect to embedded content. Curiously, it works fine in IE. I could of course add a reference to the script into the SVG file as well but I believe that will result in the client downloading the scripts file twice and in addition I have 1000+ svg files and I'd really rather not add one line to all of them, although I suppose I could write a batch file or whatever if I have to. • Facebook Connect cross-domain receiver URL (XXXXXXX) must have the application's Connect URL as pref

  I am trying to create a javascript widget which can be placed on any webpage and uses facebook connect to authenticate the user. What I have done is that,in any html file you put a javascript which has a document.write to show the widget. <script type="text/javascript" src="button.js"></script> On clicking the widget, the facecook login happens if the user is not already logged in to facebook (Single Sign On). There are no problems when I am putting the HTML file and the js file in the same directory as specified in the facebook connect URL. However, when I put the HTML file in some other folder and specify the absolute path to the js folder I get the warning "Facebook Connect cross-domain receiver URL (XXXXXXX) must have the application's Connect URL as prefix" The login however happens? How can this be resolved?

• applet does not load

  We have a legacy program that was ported from Java 1.3 to Java 1.5. This application involves applets which worked fine before. After porting however, the applet would not load. However there are no errors or exceptions. The app would just try to load it forever. We tried to run it with Java 1.6 and poof! No problems whatsoever. Isn't Java 6 backwards compatible?   I have JavaScript inside a .wsf file and I'm getting the error: C:\bin\LDLSInfo.wsf(53, 34) Windows Script Host: Cannot retrieve referenced URL: S:\tools\JScript\lib\StandardWSH.js At line 53, it says <script language="JScript" src="S:\tools\JScript\lib\StandardWSH.js"/> I know that LDLSInfo.wsf (the main script) and StandardWSH.js (the script to load) both work fine, because I've ran them from a different machine. It works fine on one machine and not on the other, both are Windows 7 x64 computers. So I'm thinking I'm missing some .dll's. Thanks for the help, -jb

  I'm trying to find a way to compress specific assets post-update on a Production server. So far, I can't find any way to do this that's even remotely simple. Anyone has any insights/experience in doing this? Basically, what I need to do is run a Java utility to compress CSS and JS files - the problem with JS files is that they may or might not validate (JS errors), if it doesn't validate the Java utility will throw output a message. This makes the whole idea a bit more complicated.

  Now this may seem like a silly question, but I need to know how to remove a DOM element BEFORE it is displayed to the user. In short, I am using a div that has a background image alerting the user to enable javascript before proceeding. If the user has javascript enabled I am using jQuery to remove the DOM element, in this case $(".check-js") which is the div housing the image. Using the conventional methods to unload DOM objects as follows does not work because it waits for the page load to complete, then removes the element, causing the image to flicker on and off each time the page loads: $(function(){ $(".check-js").css( {display:"none"} ) }) I simply want to remove the div if the user has js enabled, and he must never see this div.   Hi all, Yesterday I managed to solve this, then lost a day's work due to the death of a HD. Now I cannot remember what I did to fix it, but I know it can be done. Input: string date in the format 'm/d/yy', eg '12/25/10', or '4/1/10' (1st April) Output - Date object I'm working with date.js and date.format.js so have Date.fromString() and Date.format() avaiable. But trying multiple combinations is not giving me what I need. IF the date were 'mm/dd/yy' then it's simple. But I'm using jquery.datepicker.js which outputs in 'm/d/yy' and I don't want to change this much I know this conversion can be done. After a 22 hour day... I need help. Thanks. Mark...

  Is there any way to suppress the default js and css loaded by application.html.erb on a view by view basis? I'm finding it incredibly difficult to manage a global css and js includes configuration when certain views need different js libraries that for some reason seem to be conflicting with one another. For example, I might want jquery 1.3 for one view and 1.4.2 for another. I don't necessarily want to have to have an include for every view (I do want to have a global site-wide default), but I would also like to be able to override those for any view I want. Thanks!

• jQuery/Javascript framework efficiency

  My latest project is using a javascript framework (jQuery), along with some plugins (validation, jquery-ui, datepicker, facebox, ...) to help make a modern web application. I am now finding pages loading slower than I am used to. After some js profiling (thanks VS2010!), it seems a lot of the time is taken procesing inside the framework. Now I understand the more complex the ui tools, the more processing needs to be done. The project is not yet at a large stage and I think would be average functions. At this stage I can see it is not going to scale well. I noticed things like the 'each' command in jQuery takes quite a lot of processing time. Have others experienced some extra latency using JS frameworks? How do I minimise their effect on page performance? Are there best practices on implementation using JS frameworks? Thanks

• IE8 won't load JavaScript file in "Compatibility View."

  Here's my JS insert: <script type="text/javascript" src="include/profile.js"></script> In IE8 with "Compatibility View," the file never loads. The first line in the file is a simple alert() call, so that I know it loaded. Change the browser to Standards View, and it loads fine. Also, if I add: <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=100" > It forces to Standards View and it loads fine. Any idea why this would be the case? I've not been able to test against IE7, but I know the JS file also does not load in IE6. Right now the tag is in the section of the file.

• Best placement for javascript in Asp.net MVC app that heavily uses partial views

  What is the best place for javascript that is specific to a partial view? For example, if I have a partial view (loaded via ajax call) with some divs and I want to turn those divs into an accordian, would it be better put the $("#section").accordion() in script tags inside of the partial view, or in a .js file in the function that retrieves that partial view and inserts it into the DOM? Obviously, common methods I will be keeping in a .js file, however I am more talking about javascript very specific to the partial view itself. Most things I find on the net seem to say to put all javascript into a separate .js but nothing addresses the idea of partial views.

  We have a sharepoint based application that uses a custom database for storing metadata/files (which could also be on a file share) My question is how can the standard file checkin/check out option in document library be customized? The javascript file ows.js in the layouts folder contains the functions that provide checkin/check out/ open file functionality. Behind the scenes it relies on a combination of HTTP Post/GET methods + SOAP + an activeX control to achieve the desired functionality. Customizing these javascript function seems tedious/error prone. Note that we have a web service that exposes endpoints, for retrieving necessary file information/data from the backend. The difficulty is in integrating it with the sharepoint js functions, due to lack of proper documentation. (Also the js functions might change over different versions of sharepoint) Also is it possible to create files/open files etc from the cache area on the client machine from server side code?
