  Just a few days ago I discovered Codility, and I tried their challenges. And I must say. I got my behind handed to me on a platter. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I'll lick my wounds and wait for the solution to come out and compare it with my own. In the meantime, I want to get ready for the next challenge so I'm reading their previous blog posts and seeing how to solve their previous problems. There are a lot of new things I haven't heard about like (Cartesian trees, various sort algorithms, etc.) So, how does one prepare for such challenges (especially the O(x) time and space complexity). What should I read to prepare for such a task?

• How to attend one off lectures? [closed]

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth! Now the problem I am facing is, "I don't know much about the material he is going to talk", so I am not sure if I should plan and I fear it will be like going for a "temple". :) What is your advise and general strategy that you have followed whenever you wanted to attend a talk or lecture wherein, it may have been worthwhile if it were an introductory tutorial, but instead you were sitting in an advanced 1 hour lecture by a famous scientist.

  Good Morning, I previously asked the Q. of how Event Handlers Work (which I got a great answer for). I would now like to understand the basics of how are events are associated with on-screen objects? An explanation of how Events are associated with on Screen Objects: The application registers the Event, the Event Handler and the Component with the GUI Server. When an Event is detected the GUI Server has to link an Event to a Window and then to a Component, it then consults the Event / Component Table to identify which Handler (s) to be executed. I am having problems finding resources/papers that have mention of this process - especially of a Event / Component Table - can anyone clarify?

  I'd like to be able to read through fifteen pages of assembly code and know what it does. I'd like to be able to write programs that write programs that write programs that write programs. We've made a lot of strides in taking load off our brains by with good tools (Chrome dev mode/Firebug for web stuff, REPL's for many languages, IDEs), but I'd like my brain to be able to handle a bigger load, as opposed to paring the load down with tools.

• Entity Framework and layer separation

  I'm trying to work a bit with Entity Framework and I got a question regarding the separation of layers. I usually use the UI - BLL - DAL approach and I'm wondering how to use EF here. My DAL would usually be something like GetPerson(id) { // some sql return new Person(...) } BLL: GetPerson(id) { Return personDL.GetPerson(id) } UI: Person p = personBL.GetPerson(id) My question now is: since EF creates my model and DAL, is it a good idea to wrap EF inside my own DAL or is it just a waste of time? If I don't need to wrap EF would I still place my Model.esmx inside its own class library or would it be fine to just place it inside my BLL and work some there? I can't really see the reason to wrap EF inside my own DAL but I want to know what other people are doing. So instead of having the above, I would leave out the DAL and just do: BLL: GetPerson(id) { using (TestEntities context = new TestEntities()) { var result = from p in context.Persons.Where(p => p.Id = id) select p; } } What to do?

  I am looking for an expert programmer to help solve a difficult situation. The interviews so far have been surprisingly disappointing. The best candidate so far is a very experienced programmer who has never used version control software. The problem in itself might not be too serious because it is something which can be learned in a short time. But there is a deeper aspect, which worries me: How is it possible to actively develop software for 10-15 years without ever needing version control? Is the fact itself of not looking for a solution to the problem of tracking changes a sign of a wrong attitude to programming?

  I am well versed in the basics of Java programming, although through most of my career I have been maintaining, upgrading, and debugging someone else's Java code. I am mainly familiar with basic servlet applications. I have a strong beginner knowledge of Maven and Ant. I have more web development with Ruby on Rails, but would like to bring my Java skills up to par with regard to web development. It seems the world of Java is so big, I have no idea what the next logical step is for me. Spring? JAX-RB? EJBs? What is the next logical step for someone like me and how would you recommend I approach it?

  I have written a program that can rapidly (within 5 sec on a 2GB RAM desktop, 2.33 Ghz CPU) differentiate between structured text (e.g english text) and random alphanumeric strings. It can also provide a probability score for the prediction. Are there any practical applications/uses of such a program.   Hello, This question is focused on extracting the advantages and disadvantages of using Web based Frameworks: such as Cake PHP, Zend, jQuery, ASP.NET). This question is completely language agnostic. Let me start with the notion of "Standing on the shoulders of Giants". Advantages: Empowers Developers - by taking features that would have previously have taken 100's of lines of code and compressing them into one simple function call empowers developers to integrate more complex features into their Web Sites. Allow for Quicker development of applications - this is very relevant for people that need websites created in a very small window (has anyone any examples of this?) Lower Costs - allows programmers to pass cost savings onto the customer, a whole new range of customers generated that wanted a website but previously could not afford the higher development costs. Disadvantages: Lost Understanding - by relying on the features of a framework a developer is in danger of loosing understanding on how things work (underneath the hood). The configuration cliff - once you go further than the configuration of your framework your productivity drops right off, it can be difficult to implement features outside of a frameworks configuration. Developer tramlines - you (the developer) has to do things the way that the developer want you to do things. Security issues - giving people these tools to develop professional looking websites fast is a potential risk, people can quickly create professional looking websites for fraudulent companies.
