  • Skillset improvement in coming new year

    Here is a little background information. I have been working for Java 10 years. The product I am working on went to live about 3 years ago. Now, the product is getting stable. After all the post-product drama, I gained a lot of knowledge about Oracle & SQL. People(mainly management) were desperated enough to give me deep oracle-related task over DBAs. I admit I considered becoming DBA but eventually decided to remain as a programmer. DBAs & Management are demanding all the DB & Query related task back to DBA, which makes me a bit sad. In short, I anticipate a lot of time next year. What would you do to improve your skillset?? I am thinking to upgrade my Java version(Not from experience though, we are using JDK1.5) to 1.6 getting certificate. Any good idea from fellow developers?? -----------Edit --------------------- How about data modeling for application? Do you guys think it is developer role??

I've made a case switch for venue_type def venue_type_check case self.venue_type when 1 "Pub" when 2 "Nattklubb" end end Now to my question: How can I find something in my query when venue_type is an int?

    I have resigned from Oracle and thus will soon leave the GlassFish group. I feel very proud looking back at what we've achieved as a team with GlassFish in the past few years, including those past two years at Oracle. If you know anything about the history of application servers at Sun, you'll recognize that building such a community around GlassFish and its amazing number of downloads is nothing short of a small miracle. The Java EE platform has also seen a strong resurgence, bringing it back to the forefront of effective enterprise Java development in many ways. Having been hired by Sun some 13 years ago to sell NetDynamics I certainly feel that I leave the company's application server in *much* better shape. Oracle has ambitious plans for GlassFish and has been in my opinion a good steward for this community. I see no reason for this to change and I do expect the community to keep on pushing Oracle to get even better with time. This ride has been intense and the people I've met and worked with, both inside and outside Sun/Oracle, have made the experience the best one of my career.   • How does the " is " operator work internally

    I want to compare the type of an object to a type to see if they are the same. I do not have the object, just the type of the object. I can do type1 == type2 and get general equality I can have a recursive loop where I repeat the above step for type1.BaseType until the BaseType is null. I can do type1.GetInterface( type2.FullName ) != null to check if type2 is an interface of type1 If I put it all together, I get if ( type2.IsInterface ) return type1.GetInterface( type2.FullName ) != null; while ( type1 != null ) { if ( type1 == type2 ) return true; type1 = type1.BaseType; } return false; Is that all the is keyword is. I cannot find the right keyword to plug into the Reflector search to find the function and a google search on "is" was not really helpful
