• Somewhat powerful server needed for computationally expensive stuff

  So here's my problem. My Dad runs a company that does some rather computationally expensive stuff. This is not supercomputer level stuff, but it does take several hours to run the average job on his Core i7 desktop. He asked me to look into a way to have his customers use the code on an hourly basis, namely via a server. Ideally he'd be able to buy a box for about $1000, and hook it right up to our home connection. Unfortunately, the data that needs to be both sent and received is on the order of several hundred megs. We live in a rural area, and the fastest connection offered is 1.5Mbit/s. Download. It's like .3Mbit/s upload. Not workable. What are the options for this kind of thing? Ideally, we'd have about 2GB of ram, 300-500GB of storage, and a nice dual core, and it has to run some flavor of Linux. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance EDIT: Also, ideally the monthly price would be < $100 per month.

• ASP.NET MVC on GoDaddy Not Working (Not Primary Domain Deployment)

  I am trying to get ASP.NET MVC working on GoDaddy and I'm not having much luck. I have read the post on SO that covers the subject, but I must have a slightly different configuration or must be missing somehting along the way because the main MVC page comes up, but all links seem to fail and no amount of tweaking the URLs seems to get it to work. A little back ground. I have a single hosting plan with many domains pointed to sub folders of the main domain. Basic ASP.NET web forms pages work just fine, but of course I wanted to try and host a sample MVC site in one of these non-primary domains. You can go to the URL here. As you can see this first page comes up, but if you click on Home or About it doesn't work. Clicking on Home creates this link "http://www.jprescottsanders.com/jps/" and clicking on about creates this link "http://www.jprescottsanders.com/jps/Home/About". As you can see JPS sneaks in there, this of course is the sub folder that i place my web app files in. I would like to know if this is a MVC related issue or a GoDaddy issue. I suspect that MVC may want to sit in the root directory of the site, and when it puts the "jps" into the URLs it breaks the routing mechanisms (but this is conjecture). I know Dan said this was possible so I'm hoping he sees this and helps me get to the bottom of this deployment strategy for MVC.

  I'm trying to write an SVN post-commit hook and, strangely, am getting hung up on what should be the easiest part.   Hi Guys, I have a Ubuntu 9.04 Linux running on Freescale's i.MX515(ARM Cortex based) board with me. There were about 250 updates pending and I did that today, well some of the updates failed because of the infamous errors: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: Couldn't rebuild package cache E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.   A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32) No drive letter show in device manager, and the dvd/cd is now not useable because it is not seen. This all happened, when i starting using a new, external usb hard drive from Buffalo. I have win 7 64bit. Everything else looks to be working fine. I even out of desperation, tried to hook up, and external dvd that had worked fine in the past. Just too slow and ate up memory, so i never used it. It tries to use the same drives, and when you click to update drivers, it says this is the best one. HELP.... even if i wanted, (WHICH I DON'T), to use the factory win 7 re-installation dvd, how,lol. No drive to install it from in this situation. I am at a lose here, and Buffalo tec was of no help at all. Just said he could not help. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Best way to attach 96 tb to workstation

  I'm running a workstation with dual xeon 5690's (12 physical/24 logical cores), 192 gb of ram (ie, maxed-out), Windows 7 64bit, 5 slots for adapter cards, and 1 tb of internal storage, with 5 more internal bays available. I have an app that creates data files totaling about 88 tbs. These are written once every 14 months, and the rest of the time the app only needs to read them; and 95% of the reads are sequential reads of huge chunks of data. I have some control over how big the individual files are, but ideally they would be between 5 and 8 tbs. The app will be reading from only one drive at a time, and the nature of the data is such that if (when) a drive dies I can restore the data to a new disk from tape. While it would be nice to be able to use the fastest drive/controllers available, at this point size matters more than speed. After doing lots of reading, I am leaning toward buying a bunch of cheap 2tb drives and putting them into a bunch of cheap enclosures. All this stuff is going into my home office, so I need to avoid the raised floor/refrigerated approach. My questions: Is the cheap drive/enclosure solution the best one for this situation? Given the nature of the app and the way the data is used, does RAID make sense? If so, which one? For huge sequential reads, would Usb 3.0 and eSata be a wash performance-wise? For each slot available on the workstation, can I hook up an enclosure that can hold multiple drives? Or is it one controller per drive? If I can have multiple drives on one controller, am I essentially splitting the bandwidth (throughput)? For example, if I have a 12 bay enclosure, is the throughput of the controller reduced by a factor of 12? Are there any Windows 7 volume/drive/capacity limits I should be aware of? Thanks

• Collecting high-volume video viewing data

  I want to add tracking to our Flash-based media player so that we can provide analytics that show what sections of videos are being watched (at the moment, we just register a view when a video starts playing) For example, if a viewer watches the first 30 seconds of a video and then clicks away to something else, we want the data to reflect that. Likewise, if someone watches the first 10 seconds, then scrubs the timeline to the last minute of the video and watches that, we want to register viewing on the parts watched and not the middle section. My first thought was to collect up the viewing data in the player and send it all to the server at the end of a viewing session. Unfortunately, Flash does not seem to have an event that you can hook into when a viewer clicks away from the page the movie is on (probably a good thing - it would be open to abuse) So, it looks like we're going to have to make regular requests to the server as the video is playing. This is obviously going to lead to a high volume of requests when there are large numbers of simultaneous viewers. The simple approach of dumping all these 'heartbeat' events from clients to a database feels like it will quickly become unmanageable so I'm wondering whether I should be taking an approach where viewing sessions are cached in memory and flushed to database when they become inactive (based on a timeout). That way, the data could be stored as time spans rather than individual heartbeats. So, to the question - what is the best way to approach dealing with this kind of high-volume viewing data? Are there any good existing architectures/patterns? Thanks, Dan.

• Multi-level shop, xml or sql. best practice?

  Hello, i have a general "best practice" question regarding building a multi-level shop, which i hope doesn't get marked down/deleted as i personally think it's quite a good "subjective" question. I am a developer in charge (in most part) of maintaining and evolving a cms system and associated front-end functionality. Over the past half year i have developed a multiple level shop system so that an infinite level of categories may exist down into a product level and all works fine. However over the last week or so i have questioned by own methods in front-end development and the best way to show the multi-level data structure. I currently use a sql server database (2000) and pull out all the shop levels and then process them into an enumerable typed list with child enumerable typed lists, so that all levels are sorted. This in my head seems quite process heavy, but we're not talking about thousands of rows, generally only 1-500 rows maybe. I have been toying with the idea recently of storing the structure in an XML document (as well as the database) and then sending last modified headers when serving/requesting the document for, which would then be processed as/when nessecary with an xsl(t) document - which would be processed server side. This is quite a handy, reusable method of storing the data but does it have more overheads in the fact im opening and closing files? And also the xml will require a bit of processing to pull out blocks of xml if for instance i wanted to show two level mid way through the tree for a side menu. I use the above method for sitemap purposes so there is currently already code i have built which does what i require, but unsure what the best process is to go about. Maybe a hybrid method which pulls out the data, sorts it and then makes an xml document/stream (XDocument/XmlDocument) for xsl processing is a good way? - This is the way i currently make the cms work for the shop. So really (and thanks for sticking with me on this), i am just wandering which methods other people use or recommend as being the best/most logical way of doing things. Thanks Dan

• Hard drive spark, can it be recovered?

  Alright, so I was going to install Source Film Maker but I didn't have any space, so I decided to connect an HDD via an USB converter(image below). I shut down the machine, turned the PSU off, and connected via a Molex connector & the USB converter. I turned back on the PSU, no sparks or anything, everything normal, but when I turned on the machine, I heard some sizzing(lol?) and sparks flying and a little flame, but the PC was running fine. I pressed the power button instead pulling out the plug (I panicked) so it continued to short circuit for about 10 seconds. There's a very little part on the HDD that become ash, it's near the Molex connector and the circuit is a little black as well. I'm afraid that I will damage the HDD more so I didn't hook up the HDD after all. Do you think it's the PSU(came default with Cooler Master Elite 430, 500W) or it's the HDD(Samsung SP1203N)? P.S: I've attached the HDD same way before(like 3 months ago), and it worked. HDD burn: USB connector: Sorry for the bad image quality, taken with my phone.

When a user taps the button (after adding the widget to their home screen), I want the phone to dial a certain telephone number. A sort of speed dial for your home screen. • 2 servers on 2 networks in same office

  Hello Gents, My office doesn't have a "server guy" in employ, so I'm stuck with having to fix server issues for now. There are 2 servers in our office, both are file/web servers only accessible via LAN. They are currently on the same network, so no issue there. Problem is, we recently got a static IP to use, but it's with a different ISP, so now we have 2 routers in our office. I would like to open one of the servers to the public as a web/FTP server. But if I hook a server up to the new router, users will no longer be able to access the files shared on that server (because they're on different networks). How can I go about making one server accessible to the public using the static IP line, but still able to share the files on it to the users connected to the other network? The server I want to make public is running Windows Server 2008, the other server Windows Server 2003. And as far as I know, IP addresses are assigned by the router. I'm just a developer, don't know much about networking. Thank you in advance.

• Can I get a domain controller not to act as DNS for the members?

  Hi, Let me try to explain my current setup. I have one linux machine acting as DHCP and DNS (dhcpd3 and bind) in my network. This works fine, all computers I hook up to the network gets an IP address and proper DNS servers set. Let's call it 10.12.0.10 However, we also have a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller in our network to which we add our Windows computers (running XP), let's call it 10.12.0.20. I noticed that when I run 'nslookup' on one of the windows machines, it says that the primary DNS is 10.12.0.20. This have not been much of a problem since: The Windows clients are stationary The Windows server in itself point out my real DHCP/DNS, since I can reach everything specified in it However, this turns out to be a problem when we use Laptops. They connect to the domain here and gets a DNS server, but when the user travels or connect the computer from home, we hit a problem. They are connected to their internet, but their DNS is 10.12.0.20 which they can't reach since they're at home and not at the office network. I solved this by removing the register key called "NameServer" with the value 10.12.0.20, but it gets set again whenever they logon to the domain the next time (when they get back to the office). Can I somehow make the computers take whatever DNS server they are handed when connecting to the internet or a home network, instead of always trying to reach the Domain Controller?

• Wireless connection drops when wired computer starts a game.

  Starting this week I have had a strange problem on my network. Some background of my setup: Internet is provided by a adsl-modem. A D-link Dir-600 router is hooked up to to adsl-modem. My computer is hooked up to the router using a cat-5 cable. My wife's computer is hooked up using a wireless usb dongle, TP-Link TL-WN821N. Both computers use windows 7 64-bit home premium. Up until this week everything was normal, we could for instance play Dungeons & Dragons Online together without any network issues. Now every time I start DDO or any other network game, for instance L4D, the whole wireless network drops. I have confirmed that it's not just her computer using an Samsung Galaxy Spica android phone. Shutting down the game on my end restores the wireless connection automagicly. My wife can start DDO without the net dropping but if I plug in a wireless network card in my computer and start up the game the connection drops. So it seems like something my computer, and my computer only, does when starting a game makes the wireless connection write a sad note and kill it self but for the life of me I can't figure out what that might be. I could hook her computer up using cat-5 but I would prefer not to do that. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be, what I can do to fix it or what I should do to get more data regarding what is happening?

  I'm having a ridiculously strange problem. When I try to run the program below, there's an error message that says: "error C2512: 'Record' : no appropriate default constructor available". And when I double-click it, it directs me to a precompiled read-only header file named "xmemory0". Do they expect me to change a read-only file?   My department has just been given the right/responsibility to manage our own VPS. The idea being that the bureaucracy will be less for the many small web projects we run. Since each project will be managed by a different team, I was planning on approaching a shared hosting model. Are there any free pieces of software that would help automate the provision of resources each time a team request a new project? Most of the projects have identical requirements - basically LAMP - so it would be these resources that I would want provisioning (and de-provisioning, if that is a word) automatically. Ideally, there would also be a way to hook it into our LDAP authentication backend too, though I could probably make this sort of modification if necessary. Since we won't be charging our "client" however, we won't need the ability to generate invoices, handle payments, etc. etc. EDIT: Sample workflow Login authenticated against LDAP Username checked against admin group (not on central LDAP) Click 'new project' and enter project name User created on VPS with project name as username Apache virtual host created and subdomain (using project name) allocated FTP & MySQL users created

• Few questions about a good projector on my PC and tv?

  I have always wanted a projector for my tv, satelite, cable, and even PC in a spare bedroom. Well it's more of a home office that I spend most my time in and the catch here is it is a small room. Room is only the standard 8foot tall. Room is about 13 feet wide on the wall where I would like to mount the project and the wall where the screen would be for it. So only about 13 feet away from projector to screen. I would like to know... 1) From experience or knowledge what would be a good projector I could hook up to my satelite box and also my PC? Cheaper is better in this case but I would still like the best image for my buck and something reliable. There is no sunlight in the room either to worry about. 2) From that distance of about 12-13 feet away, how big of a clear picture could I expect? 3) What kind of cables would I need to purchase and run through my attic to my cable/satelite receiver box as well as my PC? 4) These cables in question 3 would most likely need to be a good 15-20feet in length to reach, would I need anything special for that to work at those distances?

• Home Sharing and Remote on iTunes causing firewall nags

  It seems that enabling Home Sharing and/or hooking up my iPhone's Remote to iTunes causes Mac OS X Snow Leopard's firewall to freak out and keep nagging every time I launch iTunes to ask if I'd like it to accept incoming connections. If I turn off Home Sharing and forget all Remotes, the nag dialog no longer comes up. I could also disable the firewall, but I think that's a silly thing to do. iTunes is already in the firewall whitelist, so the only thing I know that could cause Mac OS X to nag is a bad application bundle code signature. I checked with this Terminal command: $ codesign -vvv /Applications/iTunes.app/ And sure enough, this is what it outputs: /Applications/iTunes.app/: a sealed resource is missing or invalid /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AutofillSettings.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iTunesDJSettings.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MobilePhonePrefs.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MobilePhoneSetup.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/UniversalAccess.nib/objects.xib: resource added I've tried reinstalling iTunes as suggested by this answer, but Mac OS X still nags about incoming connections and the exact same output is generated when I run the above command again. On my PC, Windows Firewall has never nagged whenever I turn on Home Sharing and hook up Remote on my iPhone. Both computers use iTunes 9.2.1. My Mac runs Mac OS X 10.6.4. Is there anything special I need to do that I might have missed? Or how do I resolve the issue? EDIT: I've updated to iTunes 10, but the nags on my Mac are still there and only go away if I turn off Home Sharing and Remote. EDIT 2: I've updated to Remote 2.0 on my iPhone, but the firewall nags are persisting. Has anyone else had this firewall issue at all?

• how to set up dual wireless routers (G and N) with single broadband connection

  A local cafe has an 802.11g wireless router attached to either an 8- or 12Mbs broadband connection. Although many customers still have -g devices, an increasing number are showing up with 802.11n devices (e.g. Mac laptops, iPads). The cafe owner is content with his router's area coverage, but he would like for his customers to be able to take advantage of the higher -n download speeds. He could simply replace the -g router with a -n router, but reportedly -n routers slow down considerably when servicing both -g and -n connections. Another option would be to buy the -n router, run an Ethernet cable between the two routers, and (of course) hook up the broadband connection to one of the two routers. Still another option would be to attach an ordinary, wired switch to the broadband connection and then attach both routers to the switch. Aside from the cost issue, what are the tradeoffs of those approaches? Which would you recommend, and why? Is there a better option than the ones I mentioned? Thank you in advance for your advice.

• What are the IR codes the new Apple Remote (alu) uses?

  I would like to clone the new Apple Remote (infrared, second generation, aluminium) just for fun with a microcontroller. Most codes of the previous model can be found in the LIRC remote control database (all except the key combinations menu + <<,play, which unpair, change ID, pair the remote. I also don't know which bit encodes the battery status. It uses a modified 32 bit NEC protocol (reverse LIRC codes bytewise). But the new Apple remote uses two additional codes for the play and the new select button. I don't have a mac, so I can't brute force test codes either ;-) So if someone possesses such a remote and the ability of recording those two new buttons and three combinations I'd really appreciate it. If you can't run LIRC (or it gets confused by the new codes) and you don't have an oscilloscope or logic analyser, maybe you could hook up a photo diode to your sound input and record the codes with Audacity? Just hit record, hit each button and combo a few times, hit stop, upload the uncompressed WAV file to a sharing site, done. That'd be great!

• Two VGA monitors on Lenovo IdeaCentre H520 Desktop

  I recently bought a Lenovo IdeaCentre H520 computer and two VGA LED monitors. This particular PC has a dedicated NVIDIA Geforce GT630 video card and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 video card. Both cards have VGA out. The Geforce card also has a HDMI out. I have installed Windows 8 and I can't seem to use both cards. I have connected both monitors, one to the VGA out of the Geforce card and one to the VGA out of the integrated card. I looked through the BIOS options for Video and I can only select the dedicated one, the integrate one or the Auto option. This kinda sucks. I was wondering what kind of options I have available. I have a VGA female to DVI A male adaptor, I was wondering if it could work if I can hook it to a DVI A female to HDMI male adaptor and plug one monitor into the VGA out of the Geforce video card and the other through both adapters to the HDMI out. Any chance this could work? I was looking online for a VGA to HDMI live cable but it's kind of expensive.

• Loading .dll/.exe from file into temporary AppDomain throws Exception

  Hi Gang, I am trying to make a Visual Studio AddIn that removes unused references from the projects in the current solution (I know this can be done, Resharper does it, but my client doesn't want to pay for 300 licences). Anyhoo, I use DTE to loop through the projects, compile their assemblies, then reflect over those assemblies to get their referenced assemblies and cross-examine the .csproj file. Problem: since the .dll/.exe I loaded up with Reflection doesn't unload until the app domian unloads, it is now locked and the projects can't be built again because VS tries to re-create the files (all standard stuff). I have tried creating temporary files, then reflecting over them...no worky, still have locked original files (I totally don’t understand that BTW). Now I am now going down the path of creating a temporary AppDomain to load the files into and then destroy. I am having problems loading the files though: The way I understand AddDomain.Load is that I should create and send a byte array of the assembly to it. I do that: FileStream fs = new FileStream(assemblyFile, FileMode.Open); byte[] assemblyFileBuffer = new byte[(int)fs.Length]; fs.Read(assemblyFileBuffer, 0, assemblyFileBuffer.Length); fs.Close(); AppDomainSetup domainSetup = new AppDomainSetup(); domainSetup.ApplicationBase = assemblyFileInfo.Directory.FullName; AppDomain tempAppDomain = AppDomain.CreateDomain("TempAppDomain", null, domainSetup); Assembly projectAssembly = tempAppDomain.Load(assemblyFileBuffer); The last line throws an exception: "Could not load file or assembly 'WindowsFormsApplication1, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. • AppDomain.Unload doesn't release the assembly I loaded up with Reflection

  Hi All, I am struggling with an issue while loading an assembly up in a temporary AppDomain to read its GetUsedReferences property. Once I do that, I call AppDomain.Unload(tempDomain) and then I try to clean up my mess by deleting the files. That fails because the file is locked. I Unloaded the temporary domain though! Any thoughts or suggestions would be greately appreciated. Here is some of my code: //I already have btyes for the .dll and the .pdb from the actual files AppDomainSetup domainSetup = new AppDomainSetup(); domainSetup.ApplicationBase = Environment.CurrentDirectory; domainSetup.ShadowCopyFiles = "true"; domainSetup.CachePath = Environment.CurrentDirectory; AppDomain tempAppDomain = AppDomain.CreateDomain("TempAppDomain", AppDomain.CurrentDomain.Evidence, domainSetup); //Load up the temp assembly and do stuff Assembly projectAssembly = tempAppDomain.Load(assemblyFileBuffer, symbolsFileBuffer); //Then I'm trying to clean up AppDomain.Unload(tempAppDomain); tempAppDomain = null; File.Delete(tempAssemblyFile); //I even try to force GC File.Delete(tempSymbolsFile); Anyway, the Deletes fail because the files are locked still. • setting the PATH for Git (not for me)

  Hi, I'm running OSX 10.6.5 with Git 1.7.1 I have git installed in a non-standard location (though that really should be the standard on a mac;-) in /Library/Frameworks/Git.framework. My own PATH is set fine, git works fine, until... I set up a pre-commit hook with a Ruby script: $ git commit -m "added some Yard documentation" .git/hooks/pre-commit: line 1: #!/usr/bin/env: No such file or directory The pre-commit.sample runs ok, so it appears that git can't find /usr/bin/env, or much else as I've tried shebanging it directly to ruby etc. Just /bin/sh is ok. So, where does Git get it's PATH? because it's not using mine or this wouldn't be happening. And more to the point, how do I get it to see /usr/bin/env ? I've tested the ruby script already, it works. Just to add: $ cat /etc/paths /usr/bin /bin /usr/sbin /sbin /usr/local/bin $ cat /etc/paths.d/git /Library/Frameworks/Git.framework/Programs The first few lines of the Ruby script (which runs via ./pre-commit or ruby pre-commit) #!/usr/bin/env ruby -wKU class String def expand_path File.expand_path self end def parent_dir File.dirname self.expand_path end end
