  Today's little problem is that I am trying to load user controls from my codebehind like so: Dim myControl As UserControl = Page.LoadControl("~\Modules\Content.ascx")              Controls.Add(myControl)  On running the page myControl is no where to be seen. I wonder why that is? Well after a bit of thought the following come to mind... Am I using the correct code to insert the usercontrol? Is there an alternative available? Does the fact that the usercontrol has a page_load method make a difference? Does the fact that the usercontrol is being called from the page_init method make a difference? Do I need to register the control in my aspx page at design time? I'll be looking to answer these questions as the day goes on!

• Trying to update Asus BIOS: FreeDOS crashes

  My UX31 zenbook is experiencing some weird shutdown behavior when the battery drops below 50% and the internet seems to agree that updating the BIOS is a good step forward since there were issue with the kernel before. I downloaded both the correct BIOS file and the windows 7 utility tool and now need to boot FreeDOS to run, however, I've tried every method out there and they all fail (or so I think): Using unetbootin's FreeDOS 1.0 image I get to an error saying it couldn't run drivers then I get to a command line on disk A:. I assumed a dead end. Using unetbootin but with the FreeDOS 1.1 version image downloaded directly: get an error of "bad or missing command interpreter". I looked online and the solutions didn't work either. So, is there an alternative to FreeDOS or to installing a BIOS that I could use?

  I'm developing with LWJGL and Java on a Windows 7 laptop. I've successfully set up saving to the %appdata%\gamename\saves\ or long form c:\users\user\appdata\roaming\gamename\saves\ folder by using File dir = new File(System.getenv("APPDATA") + "\\gamename\\saves\\");. I have hobbyist level experience with Linux, and zero experience with OSX. My game will be fully cross platform. Is System.getenv("APPDATA"); cross platform? If so, where does it point to on Linux or OSX? Is there a best practices alternative that I should use?

  I'm moving from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, and so far the experience has been a really good one :) However, there is something that I've used to do with Windows 7 that I can't find how to do in Ubuntu: From my Windows music manager programs (either MediaMonkey or Windows Media Player) I could set song ratings in a way that the ratings set from either program could be also read from the other one. Additionally, song ratings were visible and updated in my iPod Touch when I synch'ed my music (either manually or using iTunes). To sum up, it seems that MediaMonkey, WMP, and the iPod device use standard mp3 metadata tag for ratings. Now, using Ubuntu 12.04, and now with an Android device: Rhythmbox can't see the song rates, despite those ratings can be seen by MediaMonkey and MS Music Player when I boot with Win7. Is this an issue I can fix with some setting? Is there any program I can use to accomplish this? What do you recommend to sync my music with Android (4.0, Galaxy s2), also keeping the song ratings information updated between Android and my PC? Thanks!!

  I am an architect in an enterprise looking to build a SaaS solution. Our products are distributed over many different deployable containers, Web Services, Web UI's, etc. I am looking for some open-source or 3rd party software solution to manage the settings of our application. These would be similar to the settings you might find in Word or Eclipse or Visual Studio. The settings would control various behaviors and features of the product. (Probably not settings like which database to connect to but more like, should I show line numbers on the page or not by default..). Ideally, we would be able to store values for different dimensions (by tenant, by user, by application environment... ) Because we have so many different deployables, I am looking for a centralized solution that can provide a web service that each of the deployables can get their individual settings from. Does anyone know of a centralized service providing this sort of features or give me some help in searching for an alternative to rolling our own?

  I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

  It seems possible (as I learned from a comment to this question made by user55822) to use Artha in order to search a term on the Internet by using "keybinding". What the aforementioned user says is that "you could search mouse selection anywhere by using an app like Artha, or by keybinding sh -c 'firefox "http://translate.google.com/#en/fr/$(xclip -o)"' (example given translate english into french)" A lot of things are obscure for me here. I could use Artha or keybinding (as alternative), or both? How to do that in each case? and "The command I gave you will open google translate in Firefox with your mouse selection (text highlighted) as a query. Use sh -c 'firefox "https://www.google.com/search?q=$(xclip -o)"' if you want regular Google over Google translate. And obviously, that would work everywhere" I do not know what to do with that formula. What should I do exactly? How to use it? In what application?

  If I wanted to fill my game screen with individually coloured pixels, how would I do this? For example, if I wanted to write a 'game of life'-type game where each pixel was a cell, how would I achieve this using XNA? I've tried just calling SetData() on a Texture2D object using a screen-sized array of Color values, but it complains with: You may not call SetData on a resource while it is actively set on the GraphicsDevice. Unset it from the device before calling SetData. How do I do as it asks? Or better still... is there an alternative, better, efficient way to fill a screen with arbitrary pixels?

• Bring the Windows 8 'Start Menu' back!

  I've been using the the Windows 8 RTM from MSDN for a week but the more of my normal software I load onto the machine the more awkward it becomes using the new 'Metro' (yes I know that name is now not used) 'Start' screen. Yes, you can oraganise your programs in groups, or you can add them to the Quick Launch bar, or you can create alphabetic folders on the desktop but sorry Microsoft, none of these are as logical as the alphabetic Start menu of previous Windows versions.Fortunately the good people at Stardock have a solution in 'Start8', which brings the Start Menu we know and love back to Windows 8. It's still in Beta and the current one runs out in October. I'm looking forward to the final release and like lots of other users, I'll be happy to pay for this.Lets hope Microsoft either reinstate the Start Menu in the first service pack or gives us a usable alternative.   Possible Duplicate: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? We're looking to develop a simple e-commerce solution to sell 5-6 products. We'd rather not have to use PayPal's buttons (buy it now!) if there's an existing alternative, but would also for budget/time constraints don't want to roll our own. Are there any small, basic ecommerce solutions available that would allow this? I did look at Foxy Cart but the monthly fee was a bit of a turn off. (I must sound extremely fussy I'm aware!) A co-worker asked me if I had any suggestions for how to find a tutor for his son. In this specific case, it was for Eclipse and Java, but it got me thinking about good general strategies one could use in situations like this.   I'm building a standard infographic where you mouse over a region and the image changes as you move. For instance, imagine a map of the world, and when you mouse over a country, that country glows and a panel shows statistics about that country. The implementation is to have a separate image for the glowing country, and a div element with the statistics, and the code shows these additional elements on a hover over the country. The question is: what should this do on a tablet, where there's no hover event? What's a good alternative navigation metaphor for this kind of situation on touch-only devices?

• Ad Service That Lets You Choose Your Ad, and Then Some [on hold]

  I'm trying to build an app for both Android and/or iOS where part of the gameplay actually involves ads as a texture. I need to be able to choose which ads I would like to use. I need to be able to be able to identify the ads (which if I can choose which ads show up in the app shouldn't be that hard). I need to be able to swap in and out new ads on what could possibly be a daily basis (and don't want to have to update the app to do it). And as if that wasn't too needy a list, I need to be able to load 50 ads from the pool of ads I deem fit, all to each and every user of the app at least every couple of days. I don't care if the ads pay, I'm not looking for clicks, but I don't want to have to make 50 fake ads every couple of days, from an "artistic" level I don't want the content to feel phony or fake, and I don't really have a way to load content to each user via some internet source (if anyone could name one that would be great). I'm not sure what kind of ad provider would like or even approve of this, in fact just what I've described might be against Google Play's or iTunes' content developer policies, but if anyone could give me any advice to steer me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  Authentication is such a general problem, which most websites have to implement. There are a few commercial solutions, but all lack sufficient functionality to customize the registration process. Therefore, I am looking for an open-source alternative. I am using PHP and with PostgreSQL as database, but as far as I understand one could utilize authentication solutions using other technologies and integrate them into our site in various ways. Therefore, I am looking for such solutions in any technology apart from those requiring Microsoft infrastructure... I would prefer Open Source solution, which have already implemented the following features: Has password recovery procedure Username is the email address of the user Has "Remember me" functionailty (meaning that the user is logged in automatically without seeing the login page) email address verification Google has gotten me nowhere on this and neither a search on this site...

• Ubuntu Desktop on PC as an IPv6 router?

  I have a DELL PC with Ubuntu 12.10 and a pandaboard running the latest linaro ubuntu 12.08. The Ethernet on the panda board is reporting 'no ipv6 router present' regardless of what router I connect (they are all probably not ipv6). I can connect via a cross-over Ethernet cable the pandaboard to the DELL PC. Can I setup the DELL PC to act as an IPv6 router. the PC has a wireless connect to our router/ADSL box. I would Really appreciate some help here so if you have an alternative please suggest it.

  I want to update my sources.list file with the fastest server from the command line in a fresh Ubuntu Server install. I know this is trivially easy with the GUI, but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it from from the command line? There are two different working answers to this question below: Use apt-get's mirror: method This method asks the Ubuntu server for a list of mirrors near you based on your IP, and selects one of them. The easiest alternative, with the minor downside that sometimes the closest mirror may not be the fastest. Command-line foo using netselect Shows you how to use the netselect tool to find the fastest recently updated servers from you -- network-wise, not geographically. Use sed to replace mirrors in sources.list. The other answers, including the accepted answer, are no longer valid (for Ubuntu 11.04 and newer) because they recommended Debian packages such as netselect-apt and apt-spy which do not work with Ubuntu.
