  • Block SMTP session with sender domain which doesn't itself accept SMTP connection.

    - by bignose
I'm administrating a mail service for a small business. Their mail host's internet connection is an ADSL service with a permanent IP address. Unfortunately, many misconfigured mail systems will happily deliver to this host, but, when the host attempts to send mail back (e.g. a bounce notice, or a normal response from someone), the declared sender's domain has an MX which refuses to receive connections from this host. That misconfiguration makes their system a one-way mail sender, which is a problem. How can I configure Postfix on this customer's mail host to refuse SMTP sessions that declare a sender domain which itself refuses SMTP from this host? That is, if the SMTP client declares a domain that we can't make SMTP connections back to, then there's not much point accepting the incoming connection in the first place. Note that I'm not, as some commenters have assumed, talking about checking whether the SMTP client will receive messages. The check I want is whether the declared sender's domain (regardless of who the current SMTP client is) will accept SMTP connections from here. In other words: when we get around to sending a message back, we'll need the sender's domain to accept SMTP connections; I want to do that check before accepting the incoming session. I'm imagining a late check (after the low-cost checks to winnow most of the rubbish connections) that keeps the client on the other end while it attempts an SMTP client connection back to the declared domain of the sender. If that connection is rejected, the incoming one is also rejected. I'm also open to other suggestions for how this problem might be addressed (short of not using this mail host at all, which isn't an option).

  • Issue with exim4u

    - by bretterer
I am using exim4u for a mail server on debian. Everything has been working fine until recently. I have not done anything to the server from the time it was working until now. I have a domain set up and is receiving and sending mail correctly. When i put a forwarding address in to a gmail address, I can still receive and send email from my webmail client but it never makes it to gmail. I have check logs and this is what I have found 2012-04-01 18:47:04 1SEPns-0000aN-Br DKIM: d=gmail.com s=20120113 c=relaxed/relaxed a=rsa-sha256 [verification succeeded] 2012-04-01 18:47:10 1SEPns-0000aN-Br H=mail-bk0-f43.google.com [209.85.214.43] Warning: X-Spam_score: -0.3 2012-04-01 18:47:10 1SEPns-0000aN-Br <= [email protected] H=mail-bk0-f43.google.com [209.85.214.43] P=esmtps X=TLS1.0:RSA_ARCFOUR_MD5:16 S=3424 id=CAGZkSKbYc7SJR+yXTgG8ubQvx4PNb0CwHG1DDKGeZ-qFiA$ 2012-04-01 18:47:11 1SEPns-0000aN-Br => /home/mail/mydomain.com/support/Maildir ([email protected]) <[email protected]> R=virtual_domains T=virtual_delivery 2012-04-01 18:47:12 1SEPns-0000aN-Br => [email protected] <[email protected]> R=dnslookup T=remote_smtp H=gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com [209.85.225.27] X=TLS1.0:RSA_ARCFOUR_SHA1:16 2012-04-01 18:47:12 1SEPns-0000aN-Br Completed I am not a mail server person so im not sure what everything here is saying. • Extract sender activity from postfix logs for auditing user

    - by Aseques
We have a mail user on our postfix server that was using the company mail to send compromising information to the competence. I've been asked to make a report of the actions for that user in the last time. There are tools like pflogsumm and others that can extract statistic data, but I haven't so far find anything useful to get all the info for a user because the data is in multiple lines. I'd like to get something like this: For the sent mail 11/11/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 11/11/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] For the received mail 10/10/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 10/10/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] I know I can do a script by myself, but matching the postfix ID for every mail is not something that can be made with a simple grep, and I've a lot of mail history that I have to recheck distributed among diferent files and so on. The source log is the standard postfix format, for example this one... • How to fix GMail time stamps in Outlook?

    - by SWB
One of my email accounts is hosted at an ISP with unreliable IMAP support, and I can't change it. Fortunately, I have my personal email set up on Google Apps for Domains, so I created another GMail account there and turned on GMail's features that allow me to send and receive mail through the ISP account using GMail ("Send mail as" and "Get mail from other accounts" in GMail settings on the Accounts tab). I'm now using Outlook to retreive mail from the GMail account through IMAP, which in turn is retreiving mail from the ISP account through POP3. This basically works great, except for one very significant issue: Prior to setting this up, I already had several months of mail in the ISP account that I had been accessing via IMAP. GMail grabbed all of this mail via POP3 at, let's say, noon on April 5. In GMail's web interface (and on my iPod touch, and in Mozilla Thunderbird), all is well: the messages are all shown with their original time stamps. But when Outlook downloads these messages from GMail via IMAP, the time stamps are all set to noon on April 5 (the time GMail downloaded them from the ISP via POP3). That's not good, especially since we're talking about hundreds of messages here over a time span of several months. How can I fix this and get Outlook to display the original time stamps?

  • troubleshooting postifx -> exchange connection issues

    - by Systemspoet
I have three linux-based mail routers that run postfix and relay mail to our on-premise exchange server as well as to outlook.com, splitting the mail based on ldap atttributes. What I've observed sporadically since upgrading this spring from Exchange 2007 to 2010 is that all three of the mail relays will, for about 20 minutes, fail to connect to exchange. Postfix logs it as "lost connection with exchange.contosso.edu" ; this problem almost always occurs to all three mail relays at the same time, and lasts for slightly under 20 minutes. If I can catch it while it's occuring, and I manually do "telnet exchange.contosso.edu 25" from one mail relay and force a message through (helo, mail from, rcpt to, data, etc), then it clears that relay up. The exchange "server" is actually two machines with the HT role on them, load balanced via windows NLB. I've worked pretty hard to figure out what's happening from the postfix side and I can't see any evidence of any misbehavior. My question is, how do I attack the problem from the exchange side? Is there a connection log, or a debug setting, or something I can do to log all of the inbound connections and tell me what's causing exchange to drop them?

  • Host to set up postfix to use external smtp server

    - by Leo
I have a web server and a mail server. Both have the same domain name except, one points to mywebsite.com and the other is mail.mywebsite.com. They have different IPs. I'm trying to set up postfix on my web server so it uses my mail server as the server that sends e-mails. I followed this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/postfix_relaying_through_another_mailserver I am getting this error in my logs: Oct 28 02:56:45 mywebsite postfix/smtp[1660]: warning: host mail.mywebsite.com[xxx.xxx.xx.xx]:25 greeted me with my own hostname mywebsite.com Oct 28 02:56:46 mywebsite postfix/smtp[1660]: warning: host mail.mywebsite.com[xxx.xxx.xx.xx]:25 replied to HELO/EHLO with my own hostname mywebsite.com I've searched around and I read that you can't use the same hostname when relaying to a separate smtp server. Is there a work around for this? Do I need to set up my mail server with a separate domain name? Also I have my MX records set up for both mywebsite.com and mail.mywebsite.com. I'm not that experienced with this so if I need to give more info let me know. Thanks!

  • Relay Access Denied (State 13) Postfix + Dovecot + Mysql

    - by Pierre Jeptha
So we have been scratching our heads for quite some time over this relay issue that has presented itself since we re-built our mail-server after a failed Webmin update. We are running Debian Karmic with postfix 2.6.5 and Dovecot 1.1.11, sourcing from a Mysql database and authenticating with SASL2 and PAM. Here are the symptoms of our problem: 1) When users are on our local network they can send and receive 100% perfectly fine. 2) When users are off our local network and try to send to domains not of this mail server (ie. gmail) they get the "Relay Access Denied" error. However users can send to domains of this mail server when off the local network fine. 3) We host several virtual domains on this mailserver, the primary domain being airnet.ca. The rest of our virtual domains (ex. jeptha.ca) cannot receive email from domains not hosted by this mailserver (ie. gmail and such cannot send to them). • iTunes App Store: Does a major version upgrade = longer approval queue time?

    - by erlingormar
I'm wondering if anyone has insight into this... when releasing an update of an iPhone application, should I expect the approval process to take longer if I submit something that's declared as a major version update (as compared to a minor version)? Last time around (about the time the big Facebook-update was released) our wait time for a minor version review was 21 days (16 working days).

  • What does an empty run queue entry points to?

    - by EpsilonVector
I'm trying to figure out the technicalities of scheduling in Linux. What I can't figure out is what happens with those entries in the run_queue where there are no running processes. In the run_queue we have a bitmap, a counter, and the array of lists themselves. For a list that is empty because there are no running tasks with its priority, what do the next and prev pointers point to?

  • Perl daemon script for message queue hanging for 20 seconds after each process. Why?

    - by Mike Diena
I have daemon script written in Perl that checks a database tables for rows, pulls them in one by one, sends the contents via HTTP post to another service, then logs the result and repeats (only a single child). When there are rows present, the first one is posted and logged immediately, but every subsequent one is delayed for around 20 seconds. There are no sleep()'s running, and I can't find any other obvious delays. Any ideas?

  • New Mac OS X Server setup, when i send mail to gmail it goes straight to Spam. Why is that?

    - by basilmir
New Mac OS X Server setup, when i send mail to gmail it goes straight to Spam. Why is that? My setup: DNS - done (A records PTR are ok) Mail Setup - done Webmail - done Also there seems to be a naming problem. They all come from [email protected] instead of [email protected]. I must be missing an alias somewhere. I've read an entire book on setting this up so don't throw stones :) The GUI is masking a lot of this up for me, so explanations via GUI is appreciated.

  • SSIS Send Mail task limited to 255 characters in address?

    - by CodeByMoonlight
Is this a bug, or some hidden limit I can't find any documentation about? When creating a Send Mail Task in SSIS 2008, the TO, CC and BCC fields seem to have a hidden limit of 255 characters. I'm aware this is the standard limit for individual email addresses, but all three are commonly used for multiple addresses and the comment for the To field even says "separate the recipients with semicolons". But nevertheless, it truncates the address to a maximum of 255 characters. Bug, non-obvious standard, or something I'm missing? Any way around this? We were trying to build a CC list dynamically, but this has caused a rethink.

  • Trying to access App.config file for mail settings but fails to work.

    - by mw
Hello we have a Business Logic Layer which has an Email Services Class. In this class we have a method which will create an email(This part works and compiles fine). However when we try to access the app config file in order to test the method we get an error saying - Can't retrieve the app config mail settings and says all values are null when they are not. Here is the app config section for our code: <mailSettings> <smtp deliveryMethod="Network" from="[email protected]"> <network host="localhost" port="25" defaultCredentials="true"/> </smtp> </mailSettings> Here is there code we use to connect to the app.config: private System.Net.Configuration.MailSettingsSectionGroup mailSettings; SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient(mailSettings.Smtp.Network.Host, mailSettings.Smtp.Network.Port); What are we doing wrong here?

  • What mail storage should I choose for our web application; IMAP, key-valud store, rdbms, ...

    - by tvrtko
I have to store e-mail messages for use with our application. I have "metadata" for all messages inside a relational database, but I don't feel comfortable keeping message content (gigabytes and terabytes of email data) inside a database. I'm currently using IMAP as a storage, but I have my doubts if I choose correctly. First of all there is a problem of uidvalidity and how to keep a permanent reference to message inside IMAP. Second, I'm not sure if this is the most robust solution in terms of backup/restore strategies, corruption of store, replication ... Positive side is that I can query IMAP using the headers because the data is mostly indexed. I don't know if key-value stores are a better approach (Casandra, Tokyo cabinet, redis). How they handle storing 1KB and 50MB of data. How they prevent corruption and when corruption or device failure happens how can I repair the store.

  • Send javax.mail.internet.MimeMessage to a recipient with non-ASCII name?

    - by phyzome
I am writing a piece of Java code that needs to send mail to users with non-ASCII names. I have figured out how to use UTF-8 for the body, subject line, and generic headers, but I am still stuck on the recipients. Here's what I'd like in the "To:" field: "????????????" <[email protected]>. This lives (for our purposes today) in a String called recip. msg.addRecipients(MimeMessage.RecipientType.TO, recip) gives "?????S]" <[email protected]> msg.addHeader("To", MimeUtility.encodeText(recip, "utf-8", "B")) throws AddressException: Local address contains control or whitespace in string ``=?utf-8?B?IuOCpuOCo+OCreODmuODh+OCo+OCouOBq+OCiOOBhuOBk+OBnSIgPA==?= =?utf-8?B?Zm9vQGV4YW1wbGUuY29tPg==?='' How the heck am I supposed to send this message?

  • Running the script for the 2-nd time, the messages are not retrieved from the mail server

    - by Max Li
I read the mails from my gmail account with the code following below. import poplib pop_conn = poplib.POP3_SSL('pop.gmail.com') pop_conn.user('user') # result: '+OK send PASS' pop_conn.pass_('password') # result: '+OK Welcome.' print pop_conn.list()[1] pop_conn.quit() It shows me 1 message as expected. However, if I run this script for the second time, I get 0 messages as result. On the server the message is still there and unread. How can I get all the messages also running the script for the second time? For me it behaves as an email client that doesn't download the same mail twice. Is there some flag to force the program to download everything again? I use python 2.7.x on ubuntu 12.10

  • Why isn't this message subject encoded properly? (php mail)

    - by Camran
I use this code to send an email: $headers="MIME-Version: 1.0"."\n"; $headers.="Content-type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8"."\n"; $headers.="From: $name <$email>"."\n"; mail($to, '=?UTF-8?B?'.base64_encode($subject).'?=', $text, $headers, '[email protected]'); If I use special characters Å Ä Ö from the swedish alphabet, they are not encoded properly, so they turn up like ö for ö. However, this doesn't happen if I change the $to variable to a gmail account email, then they are shown correctly. Anybody got any idea? Thanks UPDATE: When I echo $name, the name is displayed correctly, in utf8, with all special chars nicely shown.
