  I have the following code in a project that write's the ascii representation of packet to a unix tty: int written = 0; int start_of_data = 3; //write data to fifo while (length) { if ((written = write(fifo_fd, &packet[start_of_data], length)) == -1) { printf("Error writing to FIFO\n"); } else { length -= written; } } I just want to take the data that would have been written to the socket and put it in a variable. to debug, I have just been trying to printf the first letter/digit. I have tried numerous ways to get it to print out, but I keep getting hex forms (I think). The expected output is: 13176 and the hex value is: 31 33 31 37 36 0D 0A (if that is even hex) Obviously my C skills are not the sharpest tools in the shed. Any help would be appreciated.

  Hi there, I have a Django-project which was running fine, until I made "some changes" I don't remember exactly. Since that point, on every request, my project crashes silently: $ ./manage.py runserver -v2 Validating models... 0 errors found Django version 1.1.1, using settings 'src.settings' Development server is running at http://127.0.0.1:8000/ Quit the server with CONTROL-C. After I requested a page (admin oder frontend), it returns to the prompt. I did not find any other option to get verbose output than -v2 - is there any logfile I can use? I'm using Django 1.1.1 on a Mac OS X 10.6 with virtualenv, Python 2.6 Thanks a lot.

• iPhone GUI for real-time log message display

  My goal is to have a screen on my GUI dedicated to logging real-time messages generated by my internal components. A certain limit will be set on the log messages so that older messages are pruned. I'm thinking about implementing using a UITextView with a NSMutableString to store the output. I would have to perform manual pruning somehow on the NSMutableString object. Is a better way to implement this?

Now I tried unchecking reuse reference types and I was able to get my project to compile. but when sending a collection from the client it was never received or couldn't be deserialized on the server end. • Can my loop be optimized any more? (C++)

  Below is one of my inner loops that's run several thousand times, with input sizes of 20 - 1000 or more. Is there anything I can do to help squeeze any more performance out of this? I'm not looking to move this code to something like using tree codes (Barnes-Hut), but towards optimizing the actual calculations happening inside, since the same calculations occur in the Barnes-Hut algorithm.   I just hit something I think is inconsistent, and wanted to see if I'm doing something wrong, if I'm an idiot, or... MailMessage msg = new MailMessage(); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); msg.To.Add("[email protected]"); Really only sends this email to 1 person, the last one. To add multiples I have to do this: msg.To.Add("[email protected],[email protected],[email protected],[email protected]"); I don't get it. I thought I was adding multiple people to the "To" address collection, but what I was doing was replacing it. I think I just realized my error -- to add one item to the collection, use .To.Add(new MailAddress("[email protected]")) If you use just a string, it replaces everything it had in its list. Ugh. I'd consider this a rather large gotcha! Since I answered my own question, but I think this is of value to have in the stackoverflow archive, I'll still ask it. Maybe someone even has an idea of other traps that you can fall into.

• Rails NoMethodError in loop when method exists

  Good day all. I'm running into a bit of a problem getting a script running on my production environment, even though it works just fine on my dev box. I've verified that all the requisite gems and such are the same version. I should mention that the script is intended to be run with the script/runner command. Here is a super-condensed version of what I'm trying to do, centered around the part that's broken: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end markets = Market.find(all) markets.each do |market| deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject end Now convertToTimeZone is a method attached to the model. So, this code works just fine on my dev machine, as stated. However, attempting to run it on my production machine results in: undefined method `subject' for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError) If, however, I go into the console on the production box and do this: def currentDeal marketTime = self.convertToTimeZone(Time.new) deal = Deal.find(:first, :conditions = ["start_time ? AND market_id = ? AND published = ?", marketTime, marketTime, self.id, 1]) return deal end market = Market.find(1) deal = market.currentDeal puts deal.subject It returns the correct value, no problem. • Help! I got a runaway PHP script. My server is down.

  I got a PHP script that is looping and will continue to do so for about another hour. How do I stop it. The script explicitly overrides the time out and the memory buffer. It's on a shared hosting server with cPanel installed. The entire website is down until the script completes. I had added a usleep(100000) statement, but it doesn't appear to work.

• Fade between looped background images using jQuery

  I'm trying to get the background image of a legacy div (by which I mean it already has a background image, which I cannot control & thus have to initially over-write) to smoothly fade between new images indefinitely. EDIT: question originally said "and it's not indefinite (it only runs once through the array).", but Mario corrected my stupid naming error. EDIT2: I'm now using Reigel's answer (see below), which works perfectly, but I still can't find any way to fade between the images smoothly. All help greatfully appreciated :)

• WCF large message exception

  Hi, I have a web service which is returning data to the desktop application. The problem I am having is, when the web service returns small volume of data everything works fine but when the volume of data is large it throws the following exception: System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. Can it be because it is taking a good 4-5 seconds to fetch all the records from the database and the session times out or something? Also, when I am debugging the web service, I see that this particular method is called twice and it is also returning the correct value both times, but for some reason the desktop application seems to be throwing the aforementioned exception. I found similar posts before on stackoverflow but they did not solve my problem. Can anybody please tell me what's going on in here? Thanks!

• Custom Wordpress Post Page Breaks if More Thank 2 Posts?

  I have a very custom template, and it works great if there are 1 or 2 posts on the blog page. But as soon as a 3rd post is added, it alters the structure of the template... Literally moves a div inside of another and I can not understand why. The code for the blog template is here, and a screenshot of the structure as it should be and another showing the misplaced div when a third post is there. Does this make any sense, any ideas? • Performance of looping over an Unboxed array in Haskell

  First of all, it's great. However, I came across a situation where my benchmarks turned up weird results. I am new to Haskell, and this is first time I've gotten my hands dirty with mutable arrays and Monads. The code below is based on this example. I wrote a generic monadic for function that takes numbers and a step function rather than a range (like forM_ does). I compared using my generic for function (Loop A) against embedding an equivalent recursive function (Loop B). Having Loop A is noticeably faster than having Loop B. Weirder, having both Loop A and B together is faster than having Loop B by itself (but slightly slower than Loop A by itself). Some possible explanations I can think of for the discrepancies. Note that these are just guesses: Something I haven't learned yet about how Haskell extracts results from monadic functions. Loop B faults the array in a less cache efficient manner than Loop A. Why? I made a dumb mistake; Loop A and Loop B are actually different. Note that in all 3 cases of having either or both Loop A and Loop B, the program produces the same output. Here is the code. • Ant fails without message at javac

  I've written an Ant build.xml file which obtains a number of source files via WSDL and compiles them. These have been working on an old, now destroyed (and therefore unavailable for comparison), system but the build process isn't completing on this newer, faster system. The relevant section of the build file looks like this: <target name="compile" depends="init"> <java classname="org.apache.axis.wsdl.WSDL2Java"> <arg line="--all --server-side --skeletonDeploy --factory --wrapArrays --output src ${srcurl}" /> </java> <javac srcdir="${src}" destdir="${build}" verbose="yes" /> </target> The files are downloaded via the WSDL service successfully, however after that point Ant simply stops & returns to the commandline. Versions of the relevant apps: # java -version java version "1.6.0_14" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode) # javac -version javac 1.6.0_14 # ant -version Apache Ant version 1.6.5 compiled on January 6 2007 I'm assuming that there's a problem with javac that Ant isn't passing back. Is there any way I can get some debugging information from javac? I've tried adding a <record /> tag to the target but that doesn't give any more information than running ant -v does. Any other suggestions would be great, also!
