• Fix invalid objects and components - BEFORE you upgrade!

  We are currently running a Tech Challange Workshop with 25 Oracle consultants and support folks from all over EMEA. We call it Tech Challange because we seperate these experts having between 5 and 20 years of Oracle experience into 5 groups - and each group has to complete their special challange such as moving a database from 10.2 to Exadata V2 or upgrading from single instance 10.2 to Real Application Clusters 11.2 with the new Grid Infrastructure. Actually we start this training with a bit presentation pieces about upgrades, Real Application Testing and Golden Gate. And one topic I always point out: Keep your database tidy before the upgrade!!! Clean up all invalid objects - especially in SYS and SYSTEM user schema BEFORE you upgrade. Use utlrp.sql to recompile invalid objects. Use Note:753041.1 to diagnose and fix invalid components. Do this always BEFORE you start the upgrade. Even if it may take some time. Otherwise your upgrade could fails or significant parts of the database packages could be invalid after the upgrade as well. I just came across this today as one group had ~240 invalid objects in the database - and due to the fact that the original system was still there could proof that the objects had been invalid before. Good job, BUT ... :-)

• What are some good, free tools to run automated security audits for PHP code?

  I've been looking for some time now and have come up short. The most promising I found was Spike PHP, which seems to no longer work. I'm looking to scan my code for potential risks of SQL Injection, XSS, etc. I've gone through most of my code manually, but with a few hundred thousand lines of code, I'm sure I missed things. If possible, are there any tools that can be downloaded and analyze code on my local machine rather than installing to the live server (this isn't a requirement if not)?

• Connecting the Dots (.NET Business Connector)

  Recently, one of my colleagues was experimenting with Reporting Server on DAX 2009, whenever he used to view a report in SQL Server Reporting Manager he was welcomed with an error: “Error during processing Ax_CompanyName report parameter. (rsReportParameterProcessingError)” The Event Log had the following entry: Dynamics Adapter LogonAs failed. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.Exceptions.FatalSessionException at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.DynamicsSession.HandleException(Stringmessage, Exception exception, HandleExceptionCallback callback) We later found out that this was due to incorrect Business Connector account, with my past experience I noticed this as a very common mistake people make during EP and Reporting Installations. Remember that the reports need to connect to the Dynamics Ax server to run the AxQueries., which needs to pass through the .NET Business Connector. To ensure everything works fine please note the following settings: 1) Your Report Server Service Account should be same as .NET Business Connector proxy account. 2) Ensure on the server which has Reporting Services installed, the client configuration utility for Business Connector points to correct proxy account. 3) And finally, the AX instance you are connecting to has Service account specified for .NET business connector. (administration –> Service accounts –> .NET Business Connector) These simple checkpoints can help in almost most of the Business Connector related  errors, which I believe is mostly due to incorrect configuration settings.   I've recently lost my job, and I'm working towards changing vocations. My degrees are in Mathematics, but I'm interested in IT, particularly working as a DBA or a programmer. I don't have IT experience, but I have the resourses to be patient with the transition, and I'm currently learning SQL and Java. Obviously, I need some job experience. My question is this: What entry-level jobs might allow me to gain useful experience towards obtaining a DBA job? It seems to me that programmers often start as testers, and system administrators could start at a help-desk position, but it is unclear how one begins to work with a company's database.

• How to structure an application that combines WCF and WPF

  I'm in the process of learning how to use WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) to allow a client/server desktop application to communicate. The application's UI will be implemented using WPF, and we will probably use SQL Server for our database. What I'm struggling with, is understanding how to structure such an application. From what I've read, there are three components of a WCF application (which in the examples I've seen have existed as separate projects): A WCF service A WCF service host A WCF service client My question then, is - should these projects solely implement the functionality of sending/receiving data from the client/server? Would it make better sense this way? Would it make sense to create a separate WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) project to implement the UI for the application? And so, when I need to send/receive data from the client/server, I could simply invoke the operations provided in the WCF projects that I have created? For anyone who has built similar applications previously, perhaps you could explain what worked best for you in terms of structuring your application? For example, if I create a user registration page. When the user clicks the 'Register' button, the client application will need to send the data to the server. In this case, could I just invoke the methods provided in the WCF projects to send the data? Also, what data structures worked best for you when sending/receiving data? My initial thought is sending/receiving XML containing the data. Is this an option that is easy to implement? I realise that answers to this question may well be a matter of opinion - unless there are specific best practices that I'm not aware of. Thank you

• Best approach for a clinic database

  As a practical assignment for the database course I'm taking I've been instructed to create a database for a local clinic, I've meet with the doctors a couple of times and discussed the information that needs to be stored in the database from personal to medical. Now I'm facing a tough decision because I've been given two choices: either to implement the database as a "local website" which only operates inside the clinic via WiFi, or to implement the front-end as a regular desktop application connecting to a shared database. Note: I've a 40 days deadline to deliver the first prototype and meet with my client. My questions are: 1- which approach should I go with given that I've more experience with desktop applications programming than web? 2- if I go with desktop front-ends what would be the best way to synchronize the database between all clients?? I've no experience and having searched for an answer a lot but came up with nothing detailed on this matter. 3- if I go with the web solution which choice would be best PHP & MySQL or ASP.NET & SQL Server or a different combination?? (given that my knowledge in both PHP & ASP.NET are nearly the same).

• New Big Data Appliance Security Features

  The Oracle Big Data Appliance (BDA) is an engineered system for big data processing.  It greatly simplifies the deployment of an optimized Hadoop Cluster – whether that cluster is used for batch or real-time processing.  The vast majority of BDA customers are integrating the appliance with their Oracle Databases and they have certain expectations – especially around security.  Oracle Database customers have benefited from a rich set of security features:  encryption, redaction, data masking, database firewall, label based access control – and much, much more.  They want similar capabilities with their Hadoop cluster.    Unfortunately, Hadoop wasn’t developed with security in mind.  By default, a Hadoop cluster is insecure – the antithesis of an Oracle Database.  Some critical security features have been implemented – but even those capabilities are arduous to setup and configure.  Oracle believes that a key element of an optimized appliance is that its data should be secure.  Therefore, by default the BDA delivers the “AAA of security”: authentication, authorization and auditing. Security Starts at Authentication A successful security strategy is predicated on strong authentication – for both users and software services.  Consider the default configuration for a newly installed Oracle Database; it’s been a long time since you had a legitimate chance at accessing the database using the credentials “system/manager” or “scott/tiger”.  The default Oracle Database policy is to lock accounts thereby restricting access; administrators must consciously grant access to users. Default Authentication in Hadoop By default, a Hadoop cluster fails the authentication test. For example, it is easy for a malicious user to masquerade as any other user on the system.  Consider the following scenario that illustrates how a user can access any data on a Hadoop cluster by masquerading as a more privileged user.  In our scenario, the Hadoop cluster contains sensitive salary information in the file /user/hrdata/salaries.txt.  When logged in as the hr user, you can see the following files.  Notice, we’re using the Hadoop command line utilities for accessing the data: $ hadoop fs -ls /user/hrdataFound 1 items-rw-r--r--   1 oracle supergroup         70 2013-10-31 10:38 /user/hrdata/salaries.txt$ hadoop fs -cat /user/hrdata/salaries.txtTom Brady,11000000Tom Hanks,5000000Bob Smith,250000Oprah,300000000 User DrEvil has access to the cluster – and can see that there is an interesting folder called “hrdata”.  $ hadoop fs -ls /user Found 1 items drwx------   - hr supergroup          0 2013-10-31 10:38 /user/hrdata However, DrEvil cannot view the contents of the folder due to lack of access privileges: $ hadoop fs -ls /user/hrdata ls: Permission denied: user=drevil, access=READ_EXECUTE, inode="/user/hrdata":oracle:supergroup:drwx------ Accessing this data will not be a problem for DrEvil. He knows that the hr user owns the data by looking at the folder’s ACLs. To overcome this challenge, he will simply masquerade as the hr user. On his local machine, he adds the hr user, assigns that user a password, and then accesses the data on the Hadoop cluster: $ sudo useradd hr $ sudo passwd $ su hr $ hadoop fs -cat /user/hrdata/salaries.txt Tom Brady,11000000 Tom Hanks,5000000 Bob Smith,250000 Oprah,300000000 Hadoop has not authenticated the user; it trusts that the identity that has been presented is indeed the hr user. Therefore, sensitive data has been easily compromised. Clearly, the default security policy is inappropriate and dangerous to many organizations storing critical data in HDFS. Big Data Appliance Provides Secure Authentication The BDA provides secure authentication to the Hadoop cluster by default – preventing the type of masquerading described above. It accomplishes this thru Kerberos integration. Figure 1: Kerberos Integration The Key Distribution Center (KDC) is a server that has two components: an authentication server and a ticket granting service. The authentication server validates the identity of the user and service. Once authenticated, a client must request a ticket from the ticket granting service – allowing it to access the BDA’s NameNode, JobTracker, etc. At installation, you simply point the BDA to an external KDC or automatically install a highly available KDC on the BDA itself. Kerberos will then provide strong authentication for not just the end user – but also for important Hadoop services running on the appliance. You can now guarantee that users are who they claim to be – and rogue services (like fake data nodes) are not added to the system. It is common for organizations to want to leverage existing LDAP servers for common user and group management. Kerberos integrates with LDAP servers – allowing the principals and encryption keys to be stored in the common repository. This simplifies the deployment and administration of the secure environment. Authorize Access to Sensitive Data Kerberos-based authentication ensures secure access to the system and the establishment of a trusted identity – a prerequisite for any authorization scheme. Once this identity is established, you need to authorize access to the data. HDFS will authorize access to files using ACLs with the authorization specification applied using classic Linux-style commands like chmod and chown (e.g. hadoop fs -chown oracle:oracle /user/hrdata changes the ownership of the /user/hrdata folder to oracle). Authorization is applied at the user or group level – utilizing group membership found in the Linux environment (i.e. /etc/group) or in the LDAP server. For SQL-based data stores – like Hive and Impala – finer grained access control is required. Access to databases, tables, columns, etc. must be controlled. And, you want to leverage roles to facilitate administration. Apache Sentry is a new project that delivers fine grained access control; both Cloudera and Oracle are the project’s founding members. Sentry satisfies the following three authorization requirements: Secure Authorization:  the ability to control access to data and/or privileges on data for authenticated users. Fine-Grained Authorization:  the ability to give users access to a subset of the data (e.g. column) in a database Role-Based Authorization:  the ability to create/apply template-based privileges based on functional roles. With Sentry, “all”, “select” or “insert” privileges are granted to an object. The descendants of that object automatically inherit that privilege. A collection of privileges across many objects may be aggregated into a role – and users/groups are then assigned that role. This leads to simplified administration of security across the system. Figure 2: Object Hierarchy – granting a privilege on the database object will be inherited by its tables and views. Sentry is currently used by both Hive and Impala – but it is a framework that other data sources can leverage when offering fine-grained authorization. For example, one can expect Sentry to deliver authorization capabilities to Cloudera Search in the near future. Audit Hadoop Cluster Activity Auditing is a critical component to a secure system and is oftentimes required for SOX, PCI and other regulations. The BDA integrates with Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall – tracking different types of activity taking place on the cluster: Figure 3: Monitored Hadoop services. At the lowest level, every operation that accesses data in HDFS is captured. The HDFS audit log identifies the user who accessed the file, the time that file was accessed, the type of access (read, write, delete, list, etc.) and whether or not that file access was successful. The other auditing features include: MapReduce:  correlate the MapReduce job that accessed the file Oozie:  describes who ran what as part of a workflow Hive:  captures changes were made to the Hive metadata The audit data is captured in the Audit Vault Server – which integrates audit activity from a variety of sources, adding databases (Oracle, DB2, SQL Server) and operating systems to activity from the BDA. Figure 4: Consolidated audit data across the enterprise.  Once the data is in the Audit Vault server, you can leverage a rich set of prebuilt and custom reports to monitor all the activity in the enterprise. In addition, alerts may be defined to trigger violations of audit policies. Conclusion Security cannot be considered an afterthought in big data deployments. Across most organizations, Hadoop is managing sensitive data that must be protected; it is not simply crunching publicly available information used for search applications. The BDA provides a strong security foundation – ensuring users are only allowed to view authorized data and that data access is audited in a consolidated framework.

Then I just download backup files and delete them. After deletion Munin's memory graph returns cache and buffers to the state that was before backup.   With almost every patch or release upgrade of the Oracle Database a new version of Oracle Application Express (APEX) will be installed. And as APEX is part of the database installation it will be upgraded as part of the component upgrades after the ORACLE SERVER component has been successfully upgraded to the new releases. But the APEX upgrade can take a bit (several minutes or even more in some cases). Therefore it is a common advice to upgrade APEX upfront before upgrading the database as this can be done online while the database is in production (unless your databases serves just as an APEX application backend - in this case upgrading APEX upfront won't save you anything).   Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?)   I've asked this question a couple of times but I don't seem to be getting any real answers. We have a SBS (Windows Server 2008 Rc) server and suddenly the screen has started freezing. Even when we go into the system via remote desktop it worked once or twice (since the problem started), but now the RDP screen freezes once it gets just past the Welcome screen. The server itself is running, SQL is working, Exchange is working, file share is fine. It's just the UI that isn't working. We've tried hard resetting and that works for a short while before the problem comes back. Where do we begin to resolve this issue? Thanks, Jacques

• Blackberry Enterprise Server - Not running?

  My BlackBerry enterprise server recently stopped forwarding messages to devices. In fact, the server claims that the last time it communicated with all the devices associated with it, was on Thursday night (4 nights ago.) The catch is this, the Exchange server is running properly (or as properly as Exchange can run :) ) The SQL server seems to be running properly. And the Blackberry Enterprise server seems to be running correctly. Other than the fact that the server has not communicated with any device since Thursday, and the fact that I am not getting messages, there appears to be nothing wrong. How do I get these message to be forwarded to devices again? I have restarted the BES services in the order suggested by the BlackBerry folks to no avail.

• Database which only holds indexes and last X records in memory?

  I'm looking for a data store that is very memory efficient while still allowing many object changes per second and disregarding ACID compliance for the last X records. I need this database for a server with not much memory and I can make a key-value store, document, or SQL database work. The idea is that indexes/keys are the only thing I need in memory and all the actual values/objects/rows can be saved on disk do to the low read rate (I just want index/key lookup to be fast). I also don't want records constantly being flushed to disk, so I would like the last X number of records to be held in memory so that 100 or so of them can all be written at once. I don't care if I lose the last 10 seconds worth of objects/values. I do care if the database as a whole is in danger of becoming corrupt. Is there a data-store like this?

  I've been looking around for tools to replace some legacy scripts for creating and maintaining accounts in a university computer lab ecosystem consisting of things like: LDAP and Kerberos for authentication User home storage and web pages Entries on an SQL database Printing quotas Mailing lists, etc. I'd also like to automate machine and VM membership for Kerberos and Puppet if possiible. I've found Capistrano, and while the basic principle of running tasks on remote hosts through SSH seems to fit, and the DSL in Ruby looks quite nice, I've found most documentation is related to application deployment, not generic tasks. I'm also not aware of any good way to parameterize tasks so I can pass on the user information for creation. Is something about Capistrano I am missing, or is it not the correct tool for this job? Are there any more userful alternatives?

  I have a small SharePoint 2010 farm (1 WFE / App Server & 1 SQL server) Our organisation is currently mirgrating to our holding company's global domain, so we now have a new local DC on site with trusts between the current domain and the new domain. I am going to need to move our SP Farm to the new domain and possibly rename servers to fit into the global naming convention (we are trying to avoid this at the moment, but might become a requirement) If there a way to script (stsadm / powershell) the user profiles and permission accross to the new domain? and on the server side, is it as simple as joining the servers to the new domain and updating all the service / farm accounts to accounts on new domain? I have googled this a bit, but everything I have found so far refers to MOSS 2007 or earlier. Any help / advise would be appreciated.

  I wanted to ask a question regarding data persistence strategies for an MMO. I have some experience in the games industry with social synchronous games. At Zynga, we stored static proto data in XML on both the client and the server and stored instance/runtime data in membase. For clarity sake, proto data for a Potion would be PotionName or MaxCharges, while runtime/instance data would be something like ChargesRemaining. So basically, if a player picks up a potion the instance is (via prediction) created from XML data on the client, the request gets sent to the server where the instance is created from XML and then added to membase. Is the same strategy that would be used for soemthing like an MMO? Would it be feasible to have static proto data in some kind of in-memory no-sql database on both client and server with instance data being stored on the server in a more enterprise level database? Or should all data (proto/instance) be stored on the server and the client gets everything from server? I know a lot of this might on certain game requirements, however, i'm basically looking for some general opinion/best practices here if there are any.

• Windows Photo Viewer needs more ram?

  Ok, so i went to open a picture with the Windows Photo Viewer (Default) application and it told me this: Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs that you aren't using or free some hard disk space (if it's almost full), and then try again. So looking at my 98% ram usage (thankyou VisualStudio x8 + SQL Server) I rebooted my computer. Now this is my load: And this is my hard-disk loadout: So now I go to load up that image again. SAME MESSAGE, what the heck? So apparantly 6gb isn't enough ram to open a 29k image that loads perfectly fine in MSPaint, Paint.NET, Photoshop It's a .png and it's not corrupt. So my question is: what gives?

• SharePoint 2010 search crawl not working

  I have the following set up: 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SQL 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SharePoint 2010. I have an issue with the search service application, the crawl appears to run for a never ending amount of time with 0 successes and 0 failures. Checking the Search Application Topology, I find that "Query Component 0" is "Not Responding". I have tried the following: I have ensured that the index directory has the right permissions applied to it and the search service account is in the right groups to consume those permissions. I have re-created the search service application. I have restarted the search service manually. I have trawled the net as much as possible to find a solution but as of yet have not come across something that has resolved this issue. Any input will be very much appreciated

  How to create a differencing disk (a chained one) from a disk that is already a differencing image? I would like to have: W2008 (base immutable) - W2008+SQL2008 (differencing, with SQL installed) --- This I can do. - W2008+SQL2008+SharePoint (chained differencing with Sharepoint installed on top of SQL2008) There's some info about it the manual: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch05.html#diffimages Differencing images can be chained. If another differencing image is created for a virtual disk that already has a differencing image, then it becomes a "grandchild" of the original parent. The first differencing image then becomes read-only as well, and write operations only go to the second-level differencing image. When reading from the virtual disk, VirtualBox needs to look into the second differencing image first, then into the first if the sector was not found, and then into the original image.* I don't get it...
