• Would Using a PHP Framework Be Beneficial in My Context?

  I've just started work at a small start-up company who mainly uses PHP to develop their front-end apps. I had no prior PHP experience before joining, and this has led to my apps becoming large pieces of spaghetti code. I essentially started by adding code to implement an initial feature, and then continued to hack in more code to implement further features – without much thought for the overall design. The apps themselves output XML to render on small mobile devices. I recently started looking into frameworks that I could use. I reckon an advantage would be that they seem to force developers to modularise their programs using good-practice design patterns. This seems great for someone in my position. The extra functions they provide, for example: interfacing with databases in such a way as to make SQL injection impossible, would be very useful too. The downside I can see is that there will be a lot of overhead for me in terms of the time taken to learn the framework itself (while still getting to grips with PHP itself). I'm also worried that it will be overkill for the scale of the apps we develop. They tend to be programs that interface with a fairly simple back-end DB, and will generate about 5 different XML screens. Probably around 1 or 2 thousand lines of code. The time it takes just to configure the frameworks may not be worth it. The final problem I can see is that developers in the company – who have to go over my code, and who do not know the PHP framework I may use – will have a much harder time understanding it. Given those pros and cons, I'm still not sure on what the best course of action will be; so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

• MacBook Pro - 72k vs 54k rpm drives - Heat and Noise

  I am looking at a new 15" MacBook Pro for development purposes. I am planning to run a Virtual Machine for about 50% of my work (Windows 7 x64, IIS, SQL Server, and VS 2010). The upgrade from a 54000 rpm drive to a 72000 rpm is only $45. From what I understand the faster rotational speed of the 72000 rpm drive will help virtual machine performance. However, I am concerned that additional heat and fan noise might be an issue. I will be running mostly on A/C power so decreased battery life is not a major concern for me. Since I would be running with a Core i7 processor which gives off a fair amount of heat already I was wondering if it might be best to stay at 54000 rpm for the hard drive. What do you all think? Thanks!

  To continue with this question: Should be Vmware vCenter server high available? According to the response there even if vCenter is down HA will continue to work. So, if my vCenter is a VM, using the express sql edition in the same VM, and that VM is hosted in the same cluster it manages (and the cluster is setup for HA): Am I correct to assume that if the host that hosts the vCenter goes down HA will vmotion the vCenter VM to another host and it will continue to function? BTW: my environment is small, two ESXi 5.0 hosts, with about 50 VMs, using iSCSI shared storaged for everything.

• Move MySQL database while instance is online

  I have a MySQL instance containing a number of databases, one of which is an archive database (although using the INNODB rather than ARCHIVE storage engine) that is not queried or written to in normal operation. The data filesystem is filling up and I'd like to move the archive database's data directory to a different filesystem (and then symlink it back, obviously). If there are no SQL statements attempting to query or update the data during the move, can I safely do this while the MySQL instance and the other databases stay online and in use? I plan to rsync the database directory to the new filesystem, then rename the old one on the original filesystem to something different and create the new symlink. lsof reports that MySQL does have the .ibd files open, so presumably it would have to reopen them.

  I would like to know if we can setup an Active-Active IIS Cluster using Windows Cluster services that shares a common storage to store web content and WITHOUT the use of Windows NLB. I'm aware that this may not be a best practice or not a recommended setup, however, the setup is to be configured as below: Two web servers running IIS 7.5 (needs a common storage for web content) for HA and another set of two servers for sql cluster in active-passive mode for HA.   It is very important to do backup of your MySql database, you will probably realize it when it is too late. A lot of web applications use MySql for storing the content. This can be blogs, and a lot of other things. When you have all your content as html files on your web server it is very easy to keep them safe from crashes, you just have a copy of them on your own PC and then upload them again after the web server is restored after the crash. All the content in the MySql database must also be backed up. If you have spent a lot of time making the content and it is only stored in the Mysql server, you will feel very bad if it gets lost for ever. Backing it up once every month or so makes sure you never loose too much of your work in case of a server crash, and it will make you sleep better at night. It is easy and fast, so there is no reason for not doing it. Step 1: Log into phpMyAdmin on your server. Step2: You can select the database that you would like to backup from the drop-down menu called Database. Step 3: A new page will be loaded in phpMyAdmin showing the selected database. In order to proceed with the backup click on the Export tab. Step 4: The options that you should select apart from the default ones are Save as file which will save the file locally to your computer in an .sql format and Add DROP TABLE which will add the drop table functionality if the table already exists in the database backup as shown below. Step 5: Click on the Go button to start the export/backup procedure for your database. A download window will pop up prompting for the exact place where you would like to save the file on your local computer. It is possible that the download starts automatically. This depends on your browser’s settings.

  We have a SQL server that locally has about 6 physical drives mapped. However let's say G: is a mount point to the SAN, if I connect with my local machine and have a personal folder mapped locally as g:\userdata that transfers to the remote desktop session on the server overwriting the value of the 'NAME' of the share. Here is the kicker, the G: on the server still has the right information but has the wrong label coming from the share on my PC. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening? My tick box for local resources is unchecked in my Microsoft RDP client.

Einerseits ist kaum zu verhindern, dass externe oder auch interne Angreifer auf das Netzwerk zugreifen: So sieht etwa jemand, der Zugriff auf einen sogenannten Netzwerksniffer hat (zum Beispiel auf das weit verbreitete Wireshark) alle Daten, die im Netzwerk übertragen werden. Andererseits gehen alle Befehle, die an eine Oracle Datenbank geschickt werden - mit Ausnahme der Informationen zu Benutzernamen und Passwort beim LOGIN - sowie alle Daten, die aus einer Datenbank ausgegeben werden, im Klartext über das Netzwerk. Das Risiko,  über das Netzwerk Daten 'zu verlieren', ist daher nur in den Griff zu bekommen, wenn man den Datenstrom verschlüsselt. Die einfachste Lösung zur Verschlüsselung des Datenstroms bietet ASO mit der sogenannten nativen Verschlüsselung über SQL*Net. Sie ist bei Bedarf und ohne Neustart der Datenbank ganz einfach und im Extremfall mit einer einzigen Einstellung in der Konfigurationsdatei SQLNET.ORA zu implementieren, nämlich mitSQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER = REQUIREDWegen der einfachen Umsetzung wird diese Variante von der ganz überwiegenden Mehrheit der ASO Anwender bevorzugt eingesetzt.   My company is hosting a website in a server with IIS, SQL Server and a 3rd party windows service (written in C#, source code available for amendments). We bought a new identical server, composed by: 1x Quad Core, 12GB RAM, 4x160GB SATA Raid 5, Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, Public IP. We aim to put all webpages and the 3rd party windows service in an high-availability state. After some lab-testing on how to configure Failover Clustering and Hyper-V, we have deep doubts on what the "best" solution would be, by "best" meaning maintainable and able to correctly handle a physical server failure. Any suggestion on how we should configure the two servers? We don't need all the configuration's step, just an hint on the right direction to follow.

• Visual Studio 2010 on Macbook Air

  Does anyone here run Visual Studio 2010 (or VS12 RC) on a Macbook Air? I have the current model with 4GB ram, 13" screen, and 256GB SSD drive. Before I go through the effort of configuring this, I'd like to know if anyone from the community has done this and: Was the performance acceptable? If it is, I plan to get a larger cinema display monitor as a second display and do all my coding on this machine ditching my desktop. Did you use Boot camp, Parallels, or VMWare? I feel to maximize performance that boot camp would be necessary to make the most utilization of the memory, but am not sure if this completely necessary. I'd prefer to use a VM, but wasn't sure if this was practical and would value your input before buying a license. Did you also run anything else on the Windows installation, such as SQL Server express, IISExpress, etc? Did performance lag after a certain point? Note: I would have asked this in superuser.com, but felt this applied more directly to the programming community.

  I have the 1.5 version of StarterSTS sitting here for quite some time now. But I was always reluctant to release it. Some of the reasons are: too many new features for a single (small) version change. to many features that are optional, like bridged authentication and thus make the code very complex. the way I implemented Azure integration adds a dependency on the Azure SDK, even for “on-premise” installations. I don’t like that. the fact I am using some WebForms bits and some WCF bits, the URL structure got messy. WebForms also don’t help a lot in testability All of the above reasons together plus the fact that I am the only architect, developer and tester on this project made me come to the conclusion that I will cancel this release. But wait… StarterSTS 1.5 is fully functional. We use both the on-premise and Azure versions internally “in production”. Cancelling means I will release the latest source code on Codeplex – but will not mark it as a “recommended release”. I also won’t produce updated screen casts and docs. Bu the setup is very similar to earlier versions. Feel free to use and customize 1.5 and give me feedback. On the good news front, I am working on a new version – welcome thinktecture IdentityServer. This version is based on MVC3 and the routing architecture, removed a lot of the clutter, has a SQL CE4 based configuration system, is more extensible – and in overall just cleaner. I will be able to upload CTPs very soon.

• What should I learn that I missed by not going to school?

  I'm a software engineer at a local university, and I feel I'm able to competently do my job, but recently I've been interested in "filling in" the gaps in my knowledge. I suspect I would have learned some of this in school; for example, I don't have a lot of knowledge of sorting algorithms (something I feel is pretty common in college). So, what knowledge am I likely missing by not going to college that I could study on my own? Bonus points for listing resources that might put me on the right track! Some background: I've programmed in PHP, Java, and Ruby (more seriously in Java and Ruby than PHP); I have some experience with C/C++, though my workload doesn't really lend itself to those languages; I work mostly (recently) with the web, using frameworks such as CakePHP and Rails. I'm familiar with SQL (though probably not with some of the theory). Note: The university I work for has no technical classes, so taking courses on the university's dime is a great idea but not possible for me. :)

• Going from dev to sysadmin advice [on hold]

  I've seen the threads on here about transitions to/from sysadmin. My story is I am a dev (technology is irrelevant), but in learning that technology it required a lot of server infrastructure. In the last few years, I thus had to setup a lot of infrastructure (AD, DNS, SQL etc) to learn said technology. I've noticed that I've enjoyed doing sysadmin and got quite good at it, and find it even engrossing (e.g. I am amazed by how decievingly complicated AD is, under the hood). I'm now thinking of moving into IT infrastructure after about 4 years in various dev (.NET) roles. Any advice? My concern is that I don't have any experience with hardware load balancers and firewalls like F5 etc, which some jobs require. How could I compensate for that? Also, I'm rubbish with my hands, would this be a factor? (i.e. maintaining physical kit)? Thanks

I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

  Nokia’s alliance with Microsoft is likely to be good news for anyone using Microsoft technologies, and particularly for .NET developers. Before the announcement, the future wasn’t looking so bright for the ‘mobile’ version of Windows, Windows Phone. Microsoft currently has only 3.1% of the Smartphone market, even though it has been involved in it for longer than its main rivals. Windows Phone has now got the basics right, but that is hardly sufficient by itself to change its predicament significantly. With Nokia's help, it is possible. Despite the promise of multi-tasking for third party apps, integration with Microsoft platforms such as Xbox and Office, direct integration of Twitter support, and the introduction of IE 9 “later this year”, there have been frustratingly few signs of urgency on Microsoft’s part in improving the Windows Phone  product. Until this happens, there seems little prospect of reward for third-party developers brave enough to support the platform with applications. This is puzzling when one sees how well SQL Server and Microsoft’s other server technologies have thrived in recent years, under good leadership from a management that understands the technology. The same just hasn’t been true for some of the consumer products. In consequence, iPads and Android tablets have already exposed diehard Windows users, for the first time, to an alternative GUI for consumer Tablet PCs, and the comparisons aren’t always in Windows’ favour. Nokia’s problem is obvious: Android’s meteoric rise. Android now has 33% of the worldwide market for smartphones, while the market share of Nokia’s Symbian has dropped from 44% to 31%. As details of the agreement emerge, it would seem that Nokia will bring a great deal of expertise, such as imaging and Nokia Maps, to Windows Phone that should make it more competitive. It is wrong to assume that Nokia’s decline will continue: the shock of Android’s sudden rise could be enough to sting them back to their previous form, and they have Microsoft’s huge resources and marketing clout to help them. For the sake of the whole Windows stack, I really hope the alliance succeeds.
