• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 2)

  Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations. • Which tool / technology: System management for databases and dependent services

  I'm looking for advice on how to enable our team to take down and re-start our company systems for maintainance purposes. The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option. We are considering developing a solution driven by PowerShell scripts but I hope for some more suggestions.

• JUnit Testing in Multithread Application

  This is a problem me and my team faces in almost all of the projects. Testing certain parts of the application with JUnit is not easy and you need to start early and to stick to it, but that's not the question I'm asking. The actual problem is that with n-Threads, locking, possible exceptions within the threads and shared objects the task of testing is not as simple as testing the class, but testing them under endless possible situations within threading. To be more precise, let me tell you about the design of one of our applications: When a user makes a request several threads are started that each analyse a part of the data to complete the analysis, these threads run a certain time depending on the size of the chunk of data (which are endless and of uncertain quality) to analyse, or they may fail if the data was insufficient/lacking quality. After each completed its analysis they call upon a handler which decides after each thread terminates if the collected analysis-data is sufficient to deliver an answer to the request. All of these analysers share certain parts of the applications (some parts because the instances are very big and only a certain number can be loaded into memory and those instances are reusable, some parts because they have a standing connection, where connecting takes time, ex.gr. sql connections) so locking is very common (done with reentrant-locks). While the applications runs very efficient and fast, it's not very easy to test it under real-world conditions. What we do right now is test each class and it's predefined conditions, but there are no automated tests for interlocking and synchronization, which in my opionion is not very good for quality insurances. Given this example how would you handle testing the threading, interlocking and synchronization?

  Quick resolution: Give full permission to AUTHENTICATED USERS in following folders. a) ORACLE_HOME b) Program Files\ORACLE   Check your PATH. You might have installed different clients in your system and your .NET application is pointing to a home with inappoperiate client. What your .NET application should load is OCI.DLL with File version more than 8.1.7. According to the MSDN document Oracle and ADO.NET:   "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle provides access to an Oracle database using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) as provided by Oracle Client software. The functionality of the data provider is designed to be similar to that of the .NET Framework data providers for SQL Server, OLE DB, and ODBC. "     The MSDN document System Requirements (Oracle) says: "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or later. MDAC 2.8 SP1 is recommended. You must also have Oracle 8i Release 3 (8.1.7) Client or later installed. "   Both the .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle and Oracle Data Provider for .NET are data providers to access Oracle database. • From TFS to Git

  I'm a .NET developer and I've used TFS (team foundation server) as my source control software many times. Good features of TFS are: Good integration with Visual Studio (so I do almost everything visually; no console commands) Easy check-out, check-in process Easy merging and conflict resolution Easy automated builds Branching Now, I want to use Git as the backbone, repository, and source control of my open source projects. My projects are in C#, JavaScript, or PHP language with MySQL, or SQL Server databases as the storage mechanism. I just used github.com's help for this purpose and I created a profile there, and downloaded a GUI for Git. Up to this part was so easy. But I'm almost stuck at going along any further. I just want to do some simple (really simple) operations, including: Creating a project on Git and mapping it to a folder on my laptop Checking out/checking in files and folders Resolving conflicts That's all I need to do now. But it seems that the GUI is not that user friendly. I expect the GUI to have a Connect To... or something like that, and then I expect a list of projects to be shown, and when I choose one, I expect to see the list of files and folders of that project, just like exploring your TFS project in Visual Studio. Then I want to be able to right click a file and select check-in... or check-out and stuff like that. Do I expect much? What should I do to easily use Git just like TFS? What am I missing here?

• Configuring vsftpd with nginx on ubuntu

  I have vsftpd installed on Ubuntu 12.04LTS along with nginx, php, and sql on an Amazon ec2 instance. The web server is good to go, but I'm having trouble connecting to the FTP server. I'm not quite sure how to set the privileges or what configuration options I might be missing. By default, the location of the web root is at /usr/share/nginx/www and it is owned by root:root. The web server runs as user www-data in the group www-data. I've opened port 21 and set the passive ports in the ec2 backend and ufw firewall. In vsftpd.conf, I have: ... anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES local_umask=0027 chroot_local_user=YES pasv_enable=YES pas_max_port=12100 pasv_min_port=12000 port_enable=YES ... Now, I'm unsure how to create the FTP user that when I login, displays my web directory with write access. I've tried it a few different ways, but I keep running into errors (either no connection, no write access, or very slow timeouts.)

• Coda-like experience for Ubuntu

  I'm a web developer who's going to transition from using Mac OS X to Ubuntu. I've been using Coda for some time, only because it makes web development easy. I know a full fledged app isn't available for Linux, but would like to know about apps that specialize in the same tasks that Coda offers. I plan on switching to Vim for code editing, I'm extremely proficient and will install the Janus plugin and be good to go for editing code. One thing that makes editing on Coda so amazing is its extremely good at SFTP, you can drag and drop files and/or folders from your local drive to the server. Also, you can edit code directly on the server. The problem here, is that using Vim I don't know of a way to edit code on a remote server, while using my own Vim settings and plugins. To solve this, I would like to know of a good SFTP client OR a good SFTP CLI. A CLI that could synchronize your files after a file has been modified would be perfect, but not necessary. Now, one of the biggest and best features of Coda is its ability to view your databases. You get to create a database, create tables, add stuff, delete stuff and view the contents of the table (all this without writing a single SQL statement). I will admit that databases are my weak point, but is a very important part of my job. If there is a tool that specializes in databases would be perfect. I wouldn't prefer to use the command line for database stuff, but if there is a CLI for databases that I'm missing could potentially be useful. So I guess I'm asking for two things. A tool that makes databases easier to visualize and a tool that assists in pushing my local code to a server.

• Where to install JDBC drivers in Hyperic Server

  I have installed Hyperic Server 4.4.0 and I want to use an SQL plugin that connects to an Oracle database. To make this work on the Agent i had to download a JDBC driver for Oracle and put it in [agent-dir]/bundles/[bundle-dir]/pdk/lib. I can now run my plugin on the agent using java -jar hq-products.jar .... Now I want to add it so that it shows up in the server hq. I put the plugin in the appropriate directory and I can add it as a platform service. However, when i try to configure the plugin I get the following error: No suitable driver found for jdbc:oracle:thin:@blah.blah:blah:blah This is the same error I got on the client before I added the Oracle JDBC driver, so I assume that's the problem here too. But where do I put the JDBC drivers on the server?

  I have configured the Windows Firewall to Block (default) incoming connection on the public profile. I have created a rule for a port (in this case, this is Sql Server) that explicitly states that only my office static IP is allowed. If I test from my office, I am able to connect to the port. I was expecting that anybody outside the office would not be able to connect, but this is not the case. I asked a friend to telnet the port to see if it would reply and it does even if he's not on my network. I am a bit confuse here. Shouldn't it block everybody but the given IP? Is my server completely unsecured?

  I'm emulating Ubuntu on my mac, and I use it as a server. I've installed lighttpd + Drupal and the following configuration section requires a domain name in order to make clean urls to work.   well, i hope this doesn't get categorized as a boating question, but it really is related to programming. I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

• Do you store mysql exports in your version control tool for reverting to in event of error?

  We run an internal web server with in-house software to run a manufacturing line. When new product features are to be added, either or both of the following occur: changes to the in-house server software may be required to support these - these are for significant changes in functionality, being code drive. changes to the MySQL database for new entries for the part numbers, these are for smaller changes, configurations, changes to already existing values and parameters -- such changes don't require code changes. Ideally we'd want our changes to be here rather than in item 1. Item 1 is version controlled in Subversion, so previous revisions can be referred to for rolling back to in the event of problems introduced in the latest revision. But what about changes to the MySQL database? We have quality processes to ensure that such changes are error-free but there is always a chance that errors can pass through, e.g. mistake in data entry or faults with the code that uses the MySQL corrupting the database etc. We have a automated backup every 6 hours but what if we want more manual defined checkpoints in between these intervals, we could use the same backup system but I wondered if folks here used other methods to store previous states of databases, e.g. exporting the database as a plain text SQL dump -- at least with this method it would be possible to see diffs e.g. in Beyond Compare for trouble shooting. Thoughts?

• In search of database delivery practitioners and enthusiasts

  We know from speaking with many of you at tradeshows and user groups that database delivery is not a factory production line. During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. As part of our new group, we’ll be running a variety of research sessions, including surveys and phone interviews, over coming months. If you have opinions to share on Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery for databases, we’d love to hear from you. Your feedback really will count as the product teams at Red Gate build plans. These improvements are geared toward helping customers more easily implement advanced configurations that require conflict detection and resolution by providing a robust framework for conflict detection for all DML statements and resolution via pre-built methods, all with less code and simpler syntax than in prior releases. Conflict Detection and Resolution in Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 is available for our supported heterogeneous platforms, which includes Oracle Database, MySQL, Sybase ASE, SQL Server, and DB2 Linux, Unix, Windows, z/OS, plus DB2 on i Series, which is newly supported in this release.   I have a job that needs to go off every minute or so, it loads a DLL i have written in C# that retrieves state for an SQL Server Mirror (Primary, Mirror and witness) for a number of databases; it allows us to poke DNS to show where the primary instances are. Please don't mention Clustering - We're not doing that. I can't be arsed to write a service, there simply isn't enough time do I Task Scheduler - every minute: Invoke a powershell script that loads the DLL does the business Task scheduler - At Startup : Invoke a similer powershell script that loads the DLL once but then loops and sleeps, refreshing the Object that the DLL exposes. Pros and cons?

• Real-time stock market application

  I'm an amateur programmer. I'd like to develop a software application (like Tradestation), to analyse real-time market data. Please teach me if the following approach is correct, ie the procedures, knowledge or software needed etc: Use a DB to read the real-time feed from data provider: what should be the right DB to use? I know it should be a time serious one. Can I use SQL, Mysql, or others? What database can receive real-time data feed? Do I need to configure the DB to do this? If the real-time data is in ASCII form, how can it be converted to those that can be read by the DB and my application? Should I have to write codes or just use some add-ins? What kind of add-in are needed? How should I code the program to retrieve the changing data from the DB so that the analysis software screen data can also change asynchronously? (like the RTD in excel) Which aspects of programming do I need to learn to develop the above? Are there web resources/ books I can refer to for more information?
