• PostgreSQL, Ubuntu, NetBeans IDE (Part 1)

I'm assuming it shouldn't be any different to what's described in the NetBeans Platform CRUD Tutorial.

• Laptop Backup Software (Corporate)?

  I wondered if any of you who have a fleet of laptops are using anything to back them up, and if so what? In particular I'm looking for a solution that is totally hands-off once installed i.e. the user doesn't have to do anything, press anything, remember to change something when their domain password changes etc. Right now we use Druva Insync which I have to say is pretty damned good, however our license is up for renewal in a couple of months so I want to be sure it's the best solution before renewing - the only other vaguely comparable product that I know of is from Atempo but the cost of a SQL Server license is a big problem there. • How does MySQL 5.5 and InnoDB on Linux use RAM?

  Does MySQL 5.5 InnoDB keep indexes in memory and tables on disk? Does it ever do it's own in-memory caching of part or whole tables? Or does it completely rely on the OS page cache (I'm guessing that it does since Facebook's SSD cache that was built for MySQL was done at the OS-level: https://github.com/facebook/flashcache/)? Does Linux by default use all of the available RAM for the page cache? So if RAM size exceeds table size + memory used by processes, then when MySQL server starts and reads the whole table for the first time it will be from disk, and from that point on the whole table is in RAM? So using Alchemy Database (SQL on top of Redis, everything always in RAM: http://code.google.com/p/alchemydatabase/) shouldn't be much faster than MySQL, given the same size RAM and database?

I wish I had more time to go over some more important topics in more detail. • Reporting Services 2008 & 2012 side by side

  I have installed Sql Server 2008 & 2012 side by side on the same machine, and that's includes the reporting service for each. Both are instances are named instances: MSSQLSERVER2008 and MSSQLSERVER2012. I didn't configure the 2008 one but configured 2012 first and this one is working fine. However later on when I wanted to configure the 2008 reporting service instance I was not able to do so; it simply cannot find it. Both services are displayed as running, nevertheless while being in Reporting Services Configuration Manager only the 2012 instance is displayed. I tried stopping the 2012 but still no luck, 2008 won't show up in the RS configuration manager. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Iulian

• Origin of common list-processing function names

  Some higher-order functions for operating on lists or arrays have been repeatedly adopted or reinvented. The functions map, fold[l|r], and filter are found together in several programming languages, such as Scheme, ML, and Python, that don't seem to have a common ancestor. I'm going with these three names to keep the question focused. To show that the names are not universal, here is a sampling of names for equivalent functionality in other languages. C++ has transform instead of map and remove_if instead of filter (reversing the meaning of the predicate). Lisp has mapcar instead of map, remove-if-not instead of filter, and reduce instead of fold (Some modern Lisp variants have map but this appears to be a derived form.) C# uses Select instead of map and Where instead of filter. C#'s names came from SQL via LINQ, and despite the name changes, their functionality was influenced by Haskell, which was itself influenced by ML. The names map, fold, and filter are widespread, but not universal. This suggests that they were borrowed from an influential source into other contemporary languages. Where did these function names come from?

• OS X can't resolve localhost suddenly

  Last week I fired up a website that I'm currently developing locally only to find out that it wasn't working as it was the night before, (or at all). After an inital stage of panic and 'what did I do' moments... I deduced the problem down to the fact that my OS X now wont resolve localhost properly, so connections to my SQL database were failing. I can still ping localhost in the terminal, but in order to get my websites up and running again, I had to change all the localhost entries to 127.0.0.1 This isn't a huge problem as everything is up and running again, but I would like to try to get to the bottom of it. I have a sneaking suspicion that an apple software update caused this issue, as I don't recall doing anything else that would have had any effect. Other than my hosts file (which looks normal), what else could be causing this? Running OSX 10.6.4

• Defining formula through user interface in user form

  I am a student and developing a simple assignment - windows form application in visual studio 2010. The application is suppose to construct formulas as per user requirement. The process: It has to pick data from columns of Microsoft Access database and the user should be able to pick the data by column name like we do in a drop down menu. and create reusable formulas in it ( configure it once and can change it again). followings are column titles from database that can be picked for example. e.g Col -1 : Marks in Maths Col -2 : Total Marks in Maths Col -3 : Marks in science Col -4 : Total marks in science Finally we should be able to construct any formula in the UI like (Col 1 + Col 3 ) / ( col 2 + col 4) = Formula 1 once this is formula is set saved and a name is assigned to it by user. he/she can use the formula and results shall appear in a window below. i.e He would be able to calculate his desired figures (formula) by only manipulating underlying data on the UI layer....choose the data for a period and apply the formula and get the answer Problem: It looks like I have to create an app where rules are set through UI....... this means no stored procedures are required in SQL.... please suggest the right approach.

• Database Migration Scripts: Getting from place A to place B

  We’ll be looking at a typical database ‘migration’ script which uses an unusual technique to migrate existing ‘de-normalised’ data into a more correct form. So, the book-distribution business that uses the PUBS database has gradually grown organically, and has slipped into ‘de-normalisation’ habits. What’s this? A new column with a list of tags or ‘types’ assigned to books. Because books aren’t really in just one category, someone has ‘cured’ the mismatch between the database and the business requirements. This is fine, but it is now proving difficult for their new website that allows searches by tags. Any request for history book really has to look in the entire list of associated tags rather than the ‘Type’ field that only keeps the primary tag. We have other problems. The TypleList column has duplicates in there which will be affecting the reporting, and there is the danger of mis-spellings getting there. The reporting system can’t be persuaded to do reports based on the tags and the Database developers are complaining about the unCoddly things going on in their database. We’ve even put in a check to prevent it being re-run once the new tables are created. Here is the diagram of the new tag relationship We’ve done both the DDL to create the tables and their associated components, and the DML to put the data in them. I could have also included the script to remove the de-normalised TypeList column, but I’d do a whole lot of tests first before doing that. Yes, I’ve left out the assertion tests too, which should check the edge cases and make sure the result is what you’d expect. One thing I can’t quite figure out is how to deal with an ordered list using this simple XML-based technique. We can ensure that, if we have to produce a list of tags, we can get the primary ‘type’ to be first in the list, but what if the entire order is significant? Thank goodness it isn’t in this case. If it were, we might have to revisit a string-splitter function that returns the ordinal position of each component in the sequence. You’ll see immediately that we can create a synchronisation script for deployment from a comparison tool such as SQL Compare, to change the schema (DDL). On the other hand, no tool could do the DML to stuff the data into the new table, since there is no way that any tool will be able to work out where the data should go. We used some pretty hairy code to deal with a slightly untypical problem. We would have to do this migration by hand, and it has to go into source control as a batch. If most of your database changes are to be deployed by an automated process, then there must be a way of over-riding this part of the data synchronisation process to do this part of the process taking the part of the script that fills the tables, Checking that the tables have not already been filled, and executing it as part of the transaction. Of course, you might prefer the approach I’ve taken with the script of creating the tables in the same batch as the data conversion process, and then using the presence of the tables to prevent the script from being re-run. The problem with scripting a refactoring change to a database is that it has to work both ways. If we install the new system and then have to rollback the changes, several books may have been added, or had their tags changed, in the meantime. Yes, you have to script any rollback! These have to be mercilessly tested, and put in source control just in case of the rollback of a deployment after it has been in place for any length of time. UPDATE titles SET  typelist= ThisTaglistFROM     (SELECT title_ID, title, STUFF(    (SELECT ','+tagname.tag FROM titles thisTitle      INNER JOIN TagTitle ON titles.title_ID=TagTitle.Title_ID      INNER JOIN Tagname ON Tagname.TagName_ID=TagTitle.TagName_ID    WHERE ThisTitle.title_id=titles.title_ID    ORDER BY CASE WHEN tagname.tag=titles.[type] THEN 1 ELSE 0  END DESC    FOR XML PATH(''), TYPE).value('.', 'varchar(max)')    ,1,1,'')  AS ThisTagList  FROM titles)fINNER JOIN Titles ON f.title_ID=Titles.title_ID You’ll notice that it isn’t quite a round trip because the tags are in a different order, though we’ve managed to make sure that the primary tag is the first one as originally. So, we’ve improved the database for the poor book distributors using PUBS. It is not a major deal but you’ve got to be prepared to provide a migration script that will go both forwards and backwards. Ideally, database refactoring scripts should be able to go from any version to any other. Schema synchronization scripts can do this pretty easily, but no data synchronisation scripts can deal with serious refactoring jobs without the developers being able to specify how to deal with cases like this.

• Book Review: Professional ASP.Net MVC4

  The past few weeks have been particularly busy as I continue to dedicate a bigger portion of my free time to refreshing my memory and enhancing my knowledge of best practices pertaining to technologies we plan on using for a major upcoming project. In this blog post, I will be providing a brief overview of my latest reading “Professional ASP.Net MVC4” by Jon Galloway, Phil Haack, Brad Wilson and K. Scott Allen. This book is a must read for web developers looking to enhance their MVC expertise with best practices and tips shared from recognized industry experts. This book takes the reader on a 16-chapter long journey towards being a better ASP.NET MVC developer with chapter 16 putting all information covered in practical context by dissecting the implementation of Nuget.org, a real-life open-source, ASP.NET MVC project.  All code samples referenced in this book are conveniently accessible via NuGet, a free, open-source Library package manager that installs as a Visual Studio Extension. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 thoroughly cover MVC’s various components: Controllers “C”, Views “V” and Models “M” respectively. Chapter 5 covers additional extension methods (Helpers) provided to speed and ease the use of common HTML elements such as forms, textboxes, grids, to name a few… Chapter 6 tackles built-in validation while providing examples and use cases on implementing custom validation that plugs into the MVC framework. Chapters 7 thru 13 discusses the latest on Membership, Ajax, Routing, NuGet and the ASP.Net Web API. • How do I make a Windows virtual machine replicate to another datacenter/cloud?

  We have a Windows 2008 VM running IIS and SQL Server Express (it's an all-in-one web application). We need to have another copy at our secondary datacenter site. What is the best way to do this? It doesn't have to be running all the time but it has to have almost the latest copy of the current VM. I took a look at VMWare Fault Tolerance and after the heart attack at the price I starting looking for another solution. If need be I wouldn't mind copying it over to a cloud VM provider, if I can find one that lets me copy my own VMs up and start them up without any conversion process.

• Is a "model" branch a common practice?

  I just thought it could be a good thing to have a dedicated version control branch for all database schema changes and I wanted to know if anyone else is doing the same and what have the results been. Say that you are working with: Schema model/documentation (some file where you model the database visually to generate the schema source, say MySQL Workbench, with a .mwb file, which is binary) Schema source (a .sql file) Schema-based code generation The normal way we were working was with feature branches, so we would do changes to the model files (the database specific ones), and then have to regenerate points 2 and 3, dealing with the possible conflicts (or even code rewriting). Now say that your workflow goes the same way as the previous item numbering. With a model branch you wouldn't have to reconcile the schema model with binaries in other feature branches, or have to regenerate schema source and regenerate code (which might have human code on top of it). It makes so much sense to me it feels weird not having seen this earlier as a common practice. Edit: I'm counting on branch merges to be the assertions for the model matching the code. I use a DVCS, so I don't fear long-lived branches or scary-looking merges. I'm also doing feature branching.

• Ping, firewall or DNS issue on Win Server 2008 R2

  I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome. • sp_releaseapplock timeout expired cause?

  I've been using a combination of sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock for some custom application locking purposes for years now with success and just the last few days I've started to get some timeout expired errors on a sp_releaseapplock which is a bit puzzling. When listing the current locks, there's less than a dozen of these active, and the rest of the dedicated server is way underutilized at the moment (less than 100 batches/sec with a mutli-processor, 32GB Ram, higher end machine.) Is there a specific resource to be monitored that may point me in the right direction for determing why such a lightweight operation is timing out? This is called within a stored proc with a timeout of 120 seconds which seems to be amazingly long for this operation to timeout on. SQL 2000 SP4 running on Windows 2003 Server. • How to connect MySQL database of local server in NetBeans 7.0.1 ( windows)?

  Hello All, I am using NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 on Windows 7 very first time for my php. Actually in my company there is a local server ( 192.168.1.99) where all projects resides and we access phpmyadmin of that local server, Although I have added my project folders with NetBeans (this was also very hectic) but now I am having problem to connect database of my local server as I can see 192.168.1.99/phpmyadmin through my browser. I have set below value Server Host : localhost, Server port number : 3306, Administrator username : keshav Administrator password : ****** and when i click on connect, a popup error windows appears with below text Unable to connect to the MySQL server: org.netbeans.api.db.explorer.DatabaseException: org.netbeans.api.db.explorer.DatabaseException: java.sql.SQLException: Access denied for user 'keshav'@'localhost' (using password: YES). The server may not be running or your MySQL connection properties may not be set correctly. Do you want to edit your MySQL connection properties? Please help me out. Thanks

• Taking our Friendships to the next level.

  Red Gate have been running the Friends of Red Gate program for years now, and over that time we've built some great relationships with some truly awesome members of the SQL and .NET communities. When I took over the running of the program from Annabel in 2011, I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment of our Friends. There were just so many of them, however, that it was hard to make the most of the relationships we had with people, and I wanted to fix that. I decided to survey all our Friends, to find out what they wanted to get out of, and put into, being in the Friends of Red Gate (FoRG) program. From the results of that survey, I identified 30 FoRGs that were really willing and able to go that step further to help Red Gate improve their tools, improve their relationship with the community, and improve the Friends of Red Gate program. Those 30 Friends of Red Gate have been awarded 'FoRG+' status. That means they'll: Have a closer relationship with the product teams, by getting involved in projects Have even more access to the inside track about the tools they're interested in Get the opportunity to come visit us at the Red Gate office and really influence the development of the tools. Plus more, depending on how the individual FoRG+ wants to work with us. This doesn't mean I've forgotten our other Friends; I'm working on ways to improve their experience of the Friends of Red Gate program. I'll write about them in another post.   I am on a Linux ubuntu machine with MySQL installed. My teacher gave out an assignment which mentioned "copy cars.dat to /data/tmp on the MySQL database server" without any explanations, I do not know what is the "/data/tmp on database server" means exactly? Basically after that I need to execute SQL statement like LOAD DATA INFILE '/data/tmp/cars.dat' INTO TABLE cars So, what does copy cars.dat to /data/tmp on the database server means as there is no /data/tmp directory even? Personally, I checked /etc/mysql/my.cnf file, inside which there are definitions of : ... basedir = /usr datadir = /var/lib/mysql tmpdir = /tmp ... Does it mean to copy cars.dat to the tmpdir which is just /tmp under root directory??

• Displaying a Paged Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

  This article demonstrates how to display a paged grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application and builds upon the work done in two earlier articles: Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC and Sorting a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC. Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC started with creating a new ASP.NET MVC application in Visual Studio, then added the Northwind database to the project and showed how to use Microsoft's Linq-to-SQL tool to access data from the database. The article then looked at creating a Controller and View for displaying a list of product information (the Model). Sorting a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC enhanced the application by adding a view-specific Model (ProductGridModel) that provided the View with the sorted collection of products to display along with sort-related information, such as the name of the database column the products were sorted by and whether the products were sorted in ascending or descending order. The Sorting a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC article also walked through creating a partial view to render the grid's header row so that each column header was a link that, when clicked, sorted the grid by that column. In this article we enhance the view-specific Model (ProductGridModel) to include paging-related information to include the current page being viewed, how many records to show per page, and how many total records are being paged through.   I administer a small network (10 users). I'm getting ready to deploy a internal webapp that will be hosted and accessed locally only. There are about 10 users on the network (192.168.111.0/24), a win2k3 server, apache (RHEL), and Mysql (RHEL), and various miscellaneous peripheries. I'd like to isolate the apache and sql boxes into a seperate area of the lan to keep things easier to maintain/grow. I've been reading about vlans, subnets, etc.. I'm not clear, however, which would be the best solution for our setup. Thanks for any tips and or advice.

• How to effectively design a piece of software

  Im a compsci student and ive got some experience in various languages and paradigms c/java/python/ruby/html/css/scheme/sql/asp(classic). I realise that i want to have some software in my portfolio for future job hunting even tho i still have 2 years left of my education. Ive got a pretty good idea of what i want to make, its a webapp. Most shops around here are either .net or java and since i know java best and dont have access to ms developer tools im thinking i should go with java. Even tho i feel i know the principles of OOP pretty good ive got no clue how to go from my idea to a working solution. Where can i access information about designing the underlying architechture of my solution? Also i would like to know what other technologies i should train on, my current list includes javascript(and possibly a javascript library) some sort of java web framework tips are appreciated. I would like to add support for android/iphone apps in the future and this is something i have to take into account when designing the app. I have done a course on software engineering but i found this to be more centered around project management ideas then the actual design and implementation. So i would like tips on technologies i should focus on to get the most out of my time without the massive overhead of huge config processes but at the same time keep my project viable in a business sense, so that i use technologies that are relevant for business (java developer jobs). And i would also like tips on where i can learn more about the design process around a software project, i will be working mostly alone. But i find the approach ive used up until now (start coding and figure it out as you go) wont suffice.

• WSS "Cannot connect to the configuration database"

  I have 64-bit WSS 3.0 installed on a 64-bit Windows 2003 Server. After installing WSS 3.0 I switched IIS to run in 32-bit emulation mode as we have some applications that require this. I'm getting a "Cannot connect to the configuration database" trying to get to the Central Admin page and wondered if: a. The setup I have won't work and I'm wasting my time trying to figure this out. or b. If anyone has any suggestions for resolving the database connection issue? The identity of the app pool that WSS runs under has all the required permissions in SQL so far as I can tell. Any help would be appreciated!
